Panini Zelda Cards: The Legend of Zelda Master Collection

The artwork spans the entire series rather than a single game. The reveal showed classic Link alongside Skyward Sword’s Zelda, Tears of the Kingdom’s Link and a moment from Ocarina of Time, which points at a set organised around forty years of the franchise rather than a tie-in to one release. A collector album is part of the line.

That album is the most informative detail in the announcement. Panini built its business on albums and packets, the format where the set is a book you fill rather than a box you rip for a hit, and it aims at a different buyer from a hobby product. It is the format that put World Cup stickers in supermarkets, and applied to a franchise with forty years of artwork it suggests a set designed to be completed rather than chased.

Licensed card sets usually fail or succeed on attention rather than on checklist design, and this one arrives inside the largest push Nintendo has put behind Zelda in years. A Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console lands on 19 October at $520, with a matching Pro Controller at $100 already open for pre-order. Ocarina of Time arrives on Switch 2 on 5 November with limited-time textured foil packaging. The Legend of Zelda film follows on 30 April 2027.

That is close to eighteen months of continuous mainstream visibility for the franchise, and a card set released into it inherits an audience that a standalone licensed product would have to buy. The film in particular reaches people who have never opened a pack of anything, which is the mechanism that turned other entertainment properties into collecting categories rather than one-off novelties.

Two things will decide what this set becomes. The first is format: an album-and-packet product and a hobby box aimed at collectors are different businesses, and the album confirmed in the announcement points firmly at the first. The second is where it is sold, because the set was shown in Nintendo’s European presentation and Panini’s European arm announced it.
