How to play Bo Jackson Battle Arena

Seven zones, higher Power wins, win four. Learn it in five minutes in Rookie Mode, then add Hot Dogs and Plays until you are playing the full game.

  1. Step 1

    The goal

Two players each secretly place seven Heroes face-down into seven Battle Zones. The zones are revealed one at a time, and the Hero with the higher Power wins that battle and takes a trophy. Win the most battles — four of the seven — and you win the game.

  2. Step 2

    The three card types

HEROES are the fighters. Each one shows its name top-left, its Power top-right and its weapon type bottom-right. The ten weapon types are Alt, Brawl, Cyber, Fire, Glow, Gum, Hex, Ice, Steel and Super. The same Hero can come in several variations — BoJax Ice and BoJax Fire are different cards.

HOT DOGS are the currency. Every player has exactly ten, the number you hold is always public, and you spend them to substitute Heroes and to run Plays.

PLAYS come from your Playbook. Each has a Hot Dog cost and an effect that can raise or lower Power, restrict your opponent, or change the battle. Bonus Plays sit on top of the standard 30-card Playbook.

  3. Step 3

    Building a deck

A standard deck is 60 Heroes, 10 Hot Dogs and a Playbook of exactly 30 unique Plays (plus any Bonus Plays).

No more than six Heroes may share the same Power value, you may include only one copy of each Hero variation, and a single Hero can appear at most six times across all its variations.

Learning? The Trainer format uses 30 Heroes, 10 Plays and 10 Hot Dogs.

  4. Step 4

    Setting up

Shuffle your Hero Deck and draw seven. Place them face-down, one in each Battle Zone, in any order you like — where you put your big Power is the first real decision of the game.

Randomly choose a starting player. That player decides who goes first ("honors") and whether battles resolve left-to-right or right-to-left.

  5. Step 5

    Mode 1 — Rookie Mode

Heroes only. Reveal the current zone together, compare Power, and the higher Power takes a trophy. Equal Power is a draw with no trophy. Move to the next zone until all seven are done. This is the best way to learn the flow of the game.

  6. Step 6

    Mode 2 — Substitution Mode

Adds Hot Dogs and a Bench. At setup, each player also draws four more Heroes into a hidden Bench.

Before each reveal, starting with the player who has honors, each player may pay two Hot Dogs to swap a Bench Hero face-down into the current zone. The original Hero goes to the discard pile and you draw a replacement. Once per battle.

Whoever won the last battle acts first in the next one; after a draw, the order stays the same.

  7. Step 7

    Mode 3 — Playmaker Mode

The full game. Add your 30-card Playbook: draw four Plays at the start and one more after every battle.

Each battle runs: Substitution Phase → Reveal → Play Phase → Determine the winner → Trophy → draw a Play.

In the Play Phase the player with honors may run one or more Plays by paying their Hot Dog cost, or pass; then the other player gets the same chance. Each player gets one opportunity per battle, and Plays resolve in the order they were run.

Super tie-breaker: if the Heroes are still tied after all Plays, a Hero with the Super weapon wins the battle.

  8. Step 8

    Winning — and no ties

The player who wins the majority of the seven battles wins the game.

Since the July 2026 rules update, a game can never end in a tie. If the battle count is level, go to Sudden Death: each player flips the top Hero of their deck, the higher Power wins, and you repeat on a tie. A Super weapon wins a tied Sudden Death.

  9. Step 9

    Rules worth knowing

The "if able" rule: whatever part of a Play can resolve does, and you still pay its full cost.

An ongoing effect never stacks with itself, and a card that moves between zones loses every effect on it.

Coins and dice are only used when a card tells you to.

  10. Step 10

    Beginner tips

Start in Rookie Mode and add one layer at a time.

Spread your Power values — you can only run six Heroes at any one Power.

You get ten Hot Dogs a game. Save them for the battles that decide it.

Remember the tie-breaker: a Super weapon wins a tie.

  11. Step 11

    Organized play

Sanctioned events run through Star City Games, with formats including Apex (no Power cap), SPEC (every Hero 160 Power or less), Elite Playmaker (total deck Power 8,250 or less), Brawl (Brawl-weapon Heroes only), Tecmo (Tecmo Bowl cards only) and Alpha Trilogy (cards released before November 1, 2025).

The 2026 World Championships at The National carried a $500,000-plus prize pool, and the 2027 World Championships prize pool is $1,000,000.
