THIEFS at the National & Fanatics Fest CAUGHT & ARRESTED!

Tens of thousands of dollars of sports cards were stolen from the national and from Fanatics Fest. But this just in. The criminals who stole those cards have been caught. We'll give you all the details and tell you what this means for card shows in the future. Hello, sports card investors and welcome to another episode of Cards on the Table from the Arena Club studio here inside Cards hq. Boys, we got them. We got the bad guys. We tracked them down. Well, we actually, we didn't do anything, but the police with a lot of like Internet sluice, a lot of social media people in the sports card hobby caught these guys. Yu-Gi-Oh this is a one-of-one This is a one-of-one for that. Are you pumped up? I am pumped. I love hearing when the thieves, the bad guys get caught. We're going to talk about that. We're going to talk about that. And then for those who haven't seen the video, let's actually first talk about what happened at the national because we were at the national. This took place obviously, week before last. There was a older man and a kid who went to a dealer booth at the national, lifted up the little showcase when the dealer wasn't looking and took out of the showcase a 2025 Topps Chrome Patrick Mahomes Gold Refractor Number to 50 in PSA 10. This is a big card. This card's worth tens of thousands of dollars taken right out of the showcase at the National. Thankfully, there was a security camera that happened to catch this act because the dealer, all of a sudden the card's missing. Nobody knows where it went. They were able to watch security camera footage this quickly spread around across social media and that led police to be able to track the person down. That video. Police also looked at city security cameras, flock cameras. They looked at license plate reader technology. They were actually able to find this guy and the kid and see other videos of them and trace it back to a particular car, go track the person down and. And the person was arrested and the card was returned. Now the dealer actually decided not to press criminal charges. I don't know why, but the person is not going to be charged criminally. They were arrested but they're not going to be charged criminally. But the dealer to get their card back. Yu-Gi-Oh So I don't know if there was some type of connection there or this person maybe was known by. I don't know what. I don't know why we're not charging the person. Yu-Gi-Oh But I am happy that the dealer got their card back. Yes. It was a big story this last week. But just a couple weeks prior at Fanatics Fest, a similar thing occurred at Fanatics Fest. There was a man who traveled up to New York for Fanatics Fest from Florida. He stole six high dollar trading cards at Fanatics Fest on July 19th. His name is Robert Clark. And this obviously led to a police investigation. He actually turned himself in and was arraigned on charges including grand larceny, criminal possession, and criminal possession of stolen property. So the bad news, we had major thefts again at the national and Fanatics Fest. Last year we also had a big theft at the National. The year before that, we also had a big theft at the Nationals. So we've now had three years in a row that there have been big, you know, theft incidents taking place at the National. And now you throw Fanatics Fest into the mix as well. So that's, you know, the bad news is it occurred again. The good news is we actually caught the people. This time, we got them. And so my question to you gentlemen is, what does this mean going forward? Will this actually deter people going forward? Or is this just a good lesson for dealers in how maybe they can protect themselves with video cameras and that type of thing? I don't think it'll deter anyone, really, unfortunately, because they probably aren't aware or they act on impulse or temptation, or they just think they're smarter than the guy who got caught. And it was good. They had apparently cameras set up at the National. So they were. That video was circulating like you literally could see the guy and his kid. And I was like, is this some kind of Oliver Twist, like operation going on? This is crazy. The guy pulls the card out, like kind of tests. It sees, pulls the card out and hands it to the kid, and the kid's in on it. And it made me wonder, like, how desperate do you have to be to rope a child into coordinating this with you? It's despicable. It's despicable. Yes, it does make. Because there were no charges pressed, it made me wonder, did this guy get busted and then share some kind of story of desperation with the dealer? That was like, there could be any number of stories. I have no idea. I'm not saying any of this happened, but it's like, it could be, you never know. People act on desperation. It could be like, I don't know, my wife's sick with cancer in the hospital and I'm trying to pay the bill and it was wrong and I'm really sorry and this is our only child. Or they could just be really bad. It could Just be a really bad parent or grandparent or whatever the situation was. Or I don't know. But I imagine the dealer had to have some reason. Why they didn't press charges on this person. It is really good that they got caught. There's been a lot of drama around flock cameras. And kind of what that means. And it's a little surveillance state y. But in this case, it worked out. We caught a bad guy, like you said. And in general, I think, you know, like one of some of the people were saying, like, this is why you always gotta lock your showcases. I think that's true. Like, make sure they're locked. I know when you were. We had stuff set up at our booth. Where you were doing trades and everything. We had locks on it and lock. It's a good idea. I know it's really difficult for dealers, Especially when they have a bigger shred. And they're moving all around to constantly lock and unlock. But at least putting some kind of a deterrent on there. Maybe there's an opportunity here. For some kind of little lock that has an alarm on it. That is easy to remove. But would go off if somebody else is tampering with it. I have no idea. There's always anywhere where there's issues like this. I feel like there's always an invention waiting to happen. So I start thinking about that. Secure cases by teapots might be coming. We need a part of the cards HQ locks, ladies and gentlemen. I lost the locks in high school and never came back. But Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh I don't know, but I'm glad we caught them. Unfortunately, theft happens at every show. We talk about this a million times. Be vigilant. Lock your cases. Set cameras up. There were a lot of things here that happened that were good. That led to ultimately catching these guys. The cameras are great. I'm very happy that they were able to catch this. There was that big incident that took place. At the Dallas card show A couple of years ago. If you remember. $2 million worth of. I do remember that. And at least I don't. The people never got caught. They never got prosecuted. But at least they did have it all on camera. And they were able. And even since then, the Dallas card show has put even more cameras around. And really up. Continue to upgrade their surveillance technology. So I was pleased to see this was in the plate in place at the national. Scott, what was your reaction to both of these arrests? My thing when I see situations like this is how many are we not seeing? A lot of dealers have so much Inventory that is very easy to steal those cards, especially those that aren't rare and that aren't graded like Diamond Homes was. I don't understand the thought process of stealing a card like that. Mahomes, because it's serial numbered 1, it's graded by PSA 2, and that's like where the value comes from are those two things. They'll deactivate that card. It's going to pop up and you're going to have to sell it somewhere. There's going to be a paper trail. So I don't get stealing cards like that. But when I was at the National, I was able to walk the Fleer a lot more than Teapot was because, you know, I was talking to different sponsors and such, and there were tables of just wax, like mountains of wax with one guy working. And it'd be really easy just to grab a blaster and go. And that's the stuff that I think there's probably thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars of product that people don't know was stolen at the event. And no offense to card collectors and dealers, they might be taking the best records to actually be aware of that. But I think for these venues, I think the security needs to be stepped up. In general, it's pretty like you can just walk in with your backpack and your suitcase and whatever you want to do. And that kind of worries me in general. So I think that needs to be stepped up. But I think this more so falls on the dealers, which I know sounds bad, not like victim blaming. They had cases that were covered. That's a great first step, which is awesome. But if people can make money off of you by stealing stuff, it's going to happen in any industry. And now that there's value in cards, we're going to see more theft, like wire theft, mail theft, all these things are happening. So you got to take the steps to make sure you're protected. And so I'm glad they had cameras set up because that saved them. But for future reference, these individuals, I'm sure they're going to lock their cases moved. Yu-Gi-Oh I. I agree, though the locking is not convenient right now because it's not. At least the locks that we use on our showcases, they're not Zebra easy to open. And one-of-one it would be nice. There's like a little fingerprint thing build into the showcase. Yu-Gi-Oh do a little like fingerprint at the end of the showcase and pops. Even just a button on the back you could press. Oh, Yu-Gi-Oh that's true. It doesn't even Necessarily have to be a long. It'd be easy. Just be the open button. Just needs to be on the dealer side of the showcase because that would be hard for someone to reach around. And here we go. Here's. Here's an idea though. Dealers. Who wants to build it? Who out there wants to build it? Who wants to. We'll support it. Promote it. Will you? We actually invest in mine and ties invention. You can be our first customer. But here's a recommendation to dealers. Just price your cards. You don't have to open them so often. That might. Might also help. So. Yu-Gi-Oh well, that's true. One point. Put. Put little price tags on your cards. You don't have to. Yu-Gi-Oh Either take them out of price them or flip them over to show people what the price is on the back. Makes me. But Mookie's first, like, professional cards were Prizm cards in 2013. But this little Spinners was his first minor league card. So. Really cool. You're having a hard time with that word. Louisville. We've had weeks where we've. And the audience has seen. We've had plenty of weeks where we really hit it big. That's right. This week, these slide packs were very meh. Yep. You guys probably saw it was pulled the other night by Roadie breakers in Rhode Island. This is kind of cool because this is a small breaking outfit in Rhode Island. This is not one of the big. This is not Backyard breaks or Pulsar or we the Hobby or Filth Bomb or Cards HQ or Cards HQ where we have six breaks going on. You know, it's none of the big guys Roadie Breakers. And so I think that's cool. I mean, I think that's really important, actually. It's just proof to the people that like this, this product is fairly distributed. It's randomly distributed. Topps doesn't know where it's going. Anyone literally could have pulled the card. This, this Breaker outfit in Rhode island seemed to be a good. Breaker outfit seemed to have a really good reputation. They were doing a three hobby box break. Pick your team. The Maverick spot was $515. A gentleman from South Carolina bought the Maverick spot and wouldn't you know it, out comes the cooperation. Cooper Flag, one of one NBA debut patch card. The redemption for it. Of course, it was fun to watch the video of this if people haven't seen it. I actually saw the News break probably five or 10 minutes after they did it. So I immediately went and they were still. The people were still live on the stream and they were still like talking about the card and everything. And so it was cool. Like I got kind of got in just after the moment and I got to go back and rewind and watch the whole thing. It was a lot of fun. But the question now becomes what happens? Because the Dallas Mavericks had put out a bounty on this card for I think it was like 22 years of season tickets and Cooper Flag game use stuff. It wasn't a good deal. Not a good deal. It was worse than Pirates. Ken Goldin put out a bounty, $1.5 million cash advance, guaranteed cash, plus the upside of whatever it auctions for. So you got him doing that. Then you had some card shop, some individuals, some not necessarily Zebra savory individuals of the adult Internet variety who were putting out larger and larger amounts of money. 3 million, maybe got up to 4 million, but no one's not real sure. Then this is a new one. Alt Decides they're going to auction the card. So crazy. They don't have the card. That's so crazy. The card's not been consigned to them. The consigner has not given the card to all. All just decided we're going to auction it one-of-one and give the consigner until August 20th to give us the card. And whoever wins this auction will pay. And then the consigner has till August 20 to give us the card to get the money from whoever wins the auction. Yu-Gi-Oh it's wild. I've never seen an auction ever be run before for something that somebody has no. They don't have. They have no right title, interest, consigner, no ability, but they're just auctioning it one-of-one Yu-Gi-Oh the bidding is up to $3 million as of the recording of this, plus buyer's premium. That means it's 3.6 million. That's where the bidding is right now on Alt. And they hold that cash, right? They will. Somebody wins, I think they're going to maybe make them pay and then try to get the consigner to give the car to. That's so wild. I don't know. I don't know. But t bot your reaction to this and if you held the card today with all of this going on, what would you do? I don't know. I don't know what I would do. I don't know. I'd probably just hide in a basement. This is like. It's like somebody winning a lottery and like, not wanting anybody to know about it in a way. But the alt situation is really interesting. Like, I was watching that. I'm like, is this, Is this legal? Is there anything weird here? On the one hand, I kind of. I kind of like it. I kind of. I'm like, Yu-Gi-Oh that's kind of smart. Like, there. There was all the hubbub when Fanatics got the schemes rdpa. And then Ken was going after Fanatics and saying, like, this isn't fair because they had first dibs on this card because they manufactured it and there were all these stories. Right. So this is an interesting twist. Is it going to. Is it going to stick? Will it go through? Will the person go, hey, you know what? Sorry, Ken, your 1.5 million is no good because Alt is literally ready to wire me or write me a check for however much this is going to eventually go for. So very creative strategy. Interesting to see if that will be a thing going forward. It's a beautiful card and I think, you know, we Get a lot of comments. You see all the posts around this and the comments are always like, of course it was a breaker. Of course it was a breaker. We've talked about this so many times. And there. People will say the question, they'll say the statement or the question. Why don't people ever get cards like this out of blasters or out of whatever? And the reality is they do, they do. You just don't see them on stream because it's not recorded. Because whatever. It's not like every card ever gets hit by breakers. This is the biggest card from the chase and one of the biggest cards pulled in recent memory. Maybe the biggest. And so it's not surprising to me, though, like you said, it's nice it was hit by a smaller breaker. I. I'd probably just. I don't know what I would do. I have no idea what I would do. I. I'd have so many people advising me on what to do, who are smarter than me on this situation. This reminds me of Charlie and Chocolate Factory. When he hits the Goldin ticket and everybody's trying to, like, take it from him and he's running. It's kind of what it feels like. I think this person should wait to see what happens with Alt and then if it doesn't go as high as you'd like, then give it to Goldin and get a guaranteed couple million dollars. It's a hard situation for them, but I would be in that situation. I can do that for them. If they want to give it to me, I'd be happy to. But you talked about the card being hit publicly by a breaker. But when the Paul Skeens debut patch was hit by someone in LA as a little kid, everybody thought it was fake. And so it's like, we can't have it both ways. Everybody's always a conspiracy theorist, but. Sorry, Jeff, I didn't mean to cut you off here, but overall I would absolutely see what happens with Alt. I think it's a very interesting thing. When I saw it yesterday or this morning, whenever it was posted, I was on Alt looking at a different card and I thought I was like, Yu-Gi-Oh good for them getting that card already up for auction. And then I was like, wait a minute, because this isn't for auction. Actually, I'm gonna pull that up right now and actually see what it says. But I want to auction right now. It says I'm starting at a dollar dollar dollar card. Debut card. Yes. Yes. $10. 100. Okay, 100. Going once you're done. 100. Dollars to teapot. There you go. Interested? We've auctioned the debut patch card, $100 to teapot. Please deliver the card to him. He'll give you the 100 bucks. I actually just emailed Alt to see if I can auction your green Kaboom Teapot. Yu-Gi-Oh just do it. Just get you an offer. Yu-Gi-Oh See what happens. It's a like, think about the implications of that that are really interesting with high end. Most like to put out feelers. You're not even contractually obligated to sell the card. It's basically seeing what you could get on auction for your card without having to do. And like, if the. When the auction. This could go on a very weird. This has opened up a. So this is it. Because when. Now that I'm thinking about this, when the alt thing ends. When the alt thing ends, doesn't the person just go, great, now I know what the baseline is and I'm gonna. I'm addict for Goldin And like, I'm gonna tell Ken Goldin I want a $4 million cash advance. Not a. Like, I don't know. It's. It's just weird. It's wild. I don't know. I really hope this doesn't start happening more often. My mind's racing. I really hope this doesn't start happening more often. It's very. That's gonna be. If you. Half the cards you're gonna be bidding on an auction aren't even gonna be real because we'll just be people putting their cards out but then deciding not to sell them to you once the auctions end. This is. This is. I see posts on ebay all the time for like Zebra high end, like Zebra fractures and things where people are, like, wanted. Yes. And it's. And it's a listing for $250,000 for like a card that's worth 25,000. That drives me nuts. I wish ebay would do something about that. I report them all the time and they just stay there. I don't know. But this is. What's the bid? Forgive me, I forgot the word and I shouldn't. But a reserve auction. Yu-Gi-Oh this is like a worse reserve auction. It's like a inverse reserve auction. I don't know what it is. The person who Say that five times. Yu-Gi-Oh seriously. The person who owns his card. Like you said, Ty, this is the new Fleer that's set by alt. It's not going to sell through alt, but good for alt. They're getting free publicity right now. If the bidding gets up to 5 million on all. Maybe it'll just be sold through there. I don't know. The person who's got the car, they're like, well, that's more I'm going to get. Also, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. one-of-one we got two more big stories to get to. I want to remind the audience first, we got three major jobs guys we are trying to fill at Cards hq. We have an. We have an executive vice president of merchandising, we have a vice president of buying, and we have a vice president of store operations. Three critical roles to Cards HQ expansion. As we start to go across the country and open up multiple stores, these roles are. We're literally interviewing for them right now. Once again, EVP of merchandising, VP of buying and VP of Store Operations. Okay, let's talk about Beckett, because Beckett paused their service levels coming out of the national. This has obviously made its rounds over the last week on social media. We have PSA paused with all of their value service levels. That of course, happened a few months ago. Now you got Beckett that is saying, mercy, mercy. I cannot take it anymore. Mercy. They're waving the white flag up there saying, gaaaaaa. Stop sending me cards to grade. No more cards to grade. Teapot. Too many cards. Somebody saved that sound bite. Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. Yu-Gi-Oh Beckett has. Beckett has paused all base and standard submissions as of August 5th. They're hoping to reopen those tiers come September 15th. So not a long period of time. They said that this pause allows their team to focus on existing orders, improve estimated turnaround times, and expand capacity while maintaining the standards that collectors expect from Beckett. So that is their statement. You now have to wonder, what does this mean for SGC? What does this mean for CGC? What does this mean for TAG? Are there smaller? Was that. Was that C3 grading? Some of these other. Is this their moment? Could be NBA too. Like your actual grading sticks. Are they all. I know. You know you love those NBA stickers, Teapot. Maybe we're just sticking. Everyone gets a sticker. Stickers everywhere. Your thoughts, Teepot? How are we dealing with this Beckett pause right now? You know whose fault this is? It's Pikachu's fault. It's Pokemon fault. Once again, if you look at the GEM rate numbers, it's Pokemon, which is up 27 month over month with Beckett 159 year over year. Sports are actually down 18 from the previous month. These are July versus June numbers. So even though you'd think, oh, the big glut of things is moving from PSA over to Beckett, it's the Pokemon that's moving over. Which is why I think you also look at cgc. They're up. I think CGC is the next potential victim, if you can say that, for somebody that just gets like overwhelmed with business for people to send to them. So it has changed my position when I'm like out looking at cards because obviously I buy a lot for my PC and then sometimes I do buy to grade. It's a strategy people use. I buy to grade and take that shot. I made a lot of videos on the market movers channel about grading and everything's closed down at any kind of an affordable price point right now. And it's really changed a lot of things. You know, sometimes there have been like more niche sports cards that are like 5, 10, $20 when they're raw. And if you could send them a PSA and you get a 10, they're like 100, 150, $200. And you see it. Well, now it's not even a consideration. I saw stuff like that in the National. I see it@cards HQ. And then I just keep going because it's like, I can't. I'm not going to spend $80 to try to get a hundred dollar card out of this. So, Beckett, closing their doors or pausing service right now. Not surprising. We saw a pause from tag. I actually don't know the status. I think they're still closed. I think TAG is actually still shut down for most, if not all service levels. So a lot of stuff. Is SGC going to be impacted by this? I don't ever see any Pokemon or TCG cards in SGC slabs, in spite of the fact that they are up 25% month over month. But that's only on 2000 and they're still down like 75, down 74 from last year. Scott, at what point do we start to hold Pikachu and Char Charizard responsible for what they've done to our grading companies? I was just thinking maybe we just actually separate them on service levels. Let's keep sports open. Like, let's keep it open because it is flat year over year for PSA right now as well. Like literally flat. And I know people who are Pokemon Card collectors maybe watch our show and they're probably like rolling their eyes and upset with us. But end of the day, like we need to slow that down. Not sports cards, because sports cards aren't the problem. But I do think that there are opportunities with CGC right now to give you an idea. If you wanted to do the bulk, it's 150 day turnaround time, so there's not an opportunity there. Might as well wait for someone else to open. But their standard, which is a 10 day estimated turnaround time is 55 bucks. So that's very fast. Like, yes, like if you can get a card you think is in good condition, especially even if Pokemon, you know, not to push the envelope here, but a CGC10 is still going to be worth quite a bit more than raw. And if it's more than $55 like that delta in like a nine or worst case scenario, it's worth doing. And so I think cgc, they need to do everything they can to not close and to capture market share. Because the more cards you see in someone's slab, the more you're going to respect that company and think of them as legitimate because you've held them. A lot of people I know have never held a CGC slab and they've now recently done that in the last 12 months. So CGC, stay strong, stay open. SGC, I don't think anyone's sending Pokemon cards. I think they're safe. Okay. Okay, there you go. That is the news, that is the advice. Okay, final story I want to get into today. Whatnot, they had a big national, Obviously we were part of it. You know, we're on stage and Cards HQ did a bunch of stuff with Whatnot at the national. They sponsored all of our national coverage. Immediately after the national, they got a big announcement. They announced that they have raised $545 million more dollars as part of a Series G capital raise that places they raised this money based on a company valuation of $20 billion. And just for context, the last time they raised money, which was in October of last year, they raised money on a valuation of 11.5 billion. So much like, well, I don't know, Ohtani cards and Kobe cards and Jordan cards. Apparently the value of Whatnot has doubled over the course of like the last several months as well. 20 billion and 545 million raised. Scott, when you saw those numbers, what does it say to you about the future? What, not the future of the hobby. It makes me realize there's significantly more participants in the hobby than I see I have my own little bubble here at work on social media who all collect and think similarly to me. But there are significantly more people who are entering the hobby than ever were there when I started 10 years ago, again, who are doing these things, which is good for the hobby because it's kind of one of those things where like, yes, breaking usually isn't a great way to spend your money in regards to getting money back, but then it'll lead you to collecting. So the hobby's still growing, which should make us all feel good as singles collectors. It also is funny to me because I remember when Fanatics Live came out, I thought Whatnot was in trouble. I remember that was like the big conversation. Like, oh, Fanatics. Fanatics can eat their lunch because they have all the money behind them. Whatnot has blown up and they aren't slowing down. At the national, they were like half of the Fleer Yes. Literally, like, it was crazy how much space they had. And they actually did a good job of making it a good, like, fun environment. I feel like Fanatics Fest at the national, it was less busy. They really made it a special event. So for me, I guess it just shows how many more people are in the hobby than I ever thought were. Yu-Gi-Oh So, Yu-Gi-Oh What do you think? Tipac? I heard they actually raised this money by auctioning cards they didn't own. It's the new strategy. It's the new strategy. Pump the bottom line. No. So what a lot of people don't realize is Whatnot does more than cards. Yes, we're a card. They do women's fashion, but it is the number one category. But they have other stuff, much like ebay and other platforms. Right. So please don't tell my wife, let her buy the Shaggy cards. This cards. If you let her on there, she don't tell her look for shacks and she's going to find handbags. I don't need handbags. I'm okay. An occasional shot card. We've, like, Scott said we saw Whatnot. I was joking. Like, how long is it before Whatnot just buys the national and it's the national buy Whatnot and not just like, this non profit that's set up because they were the whole entry room. We were like speculating, like, how much did this just this room cost? Big. Everything was Whatnot, Everything. So they Tribute a bag. Live sellers Tribute a bag of the national. They Tribute a bag.
