Are Some Comps Better Than Others For Tough Vintage Cards?

On our regular show and there were a few topics I wanted to. The hit list. There were a few topics I wanted to talk about that we didn't really get to. You want to talk about? Well, maybe with baseball. Oh, what a. What an amazing mat is holding up the Babe Ruth baseball that he. He purchased at a mall show, of all places. Somebody walked out. I am a mall. So I want to talk about. I want to talk about comps and, and we can. By the way, for the record, I'm coming to this. Cold. Ice cold. Yeah. I don't know what the list is, so let's talk about comps so you. And we can talk about this. We can maybe re. Rehash a little bit like a comps discussion that we had on the hit list that involved a piece that you bought. And it's, it's the difficulty of, of comping pre war things and how you get into these, you know, debates with people and how it can be kind of a pain sometimes and why it's. It was just sometimes. Do you ever wish sometimes that we bought stuff that had. That was like, you know, the modern stuff that like had like 50 sales in the last two months? Would that make things easier? No. Yes. But no. No. Why? So I don't like the, the argumentative part of it, the argument side of it, which people get attached to their cars over overvalue their card. Same thing by the guilty. You know, I mean, we're all guilty of that. That's not. Yeah. You know, but I enjoy the back and forth. I enjoy the art of. Wow. The eye pill on that one. Look at this, look at that. I enjoy that. I don't enjoy the argument. People get argumentative about it. You know, they get a little Tony. But. Yeah, no, I like, I, you know, not every card's created. Like we just, we just showed on our regular show, we just showed 49 bowman spawn low grade three times. Boy, these cards are not created equal. It's unbelievable. It's just unbelievable, you know, and so I actually do enjoy it, you know. Yeah, the haggle, like, not the haggle, but like. Yeah, the argument. I don't like the argument because I want to have a good time. We just talked about this on the show. I just want to have a good time at these shows, you know? Right. Do a good job. Good no, sorry. I do a good job of sourcing good inventory, getting good prices. That's it. Hard job's over. Now I'm just want to. I want to have a good time. I want to have a good time, you know, Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning when I'm doing the inventory stuff, not a good time. Saturday morning at the car show. I just want to have a good time. It's, you know, the rest. The hard work's been done. Yeah. No, so the reason why I bring this up is because I wanted to talk about. Because not all. Not all cards are career equal. But also not all comps are not. Not all just talked about that where. Right. You know what auction house has it, whether it's ebay or it's rea or it's heritage or gold. You know, Tony's favorite company, Golden. You know, whichever one it might be. Yeah. What time it sells on ebay matters when you post it. Like, I just, you know, you know, fingers crossed. It comes in the mail. I grabbed that M101 Mathewson. The price was wrong on that card. The price was just too low on that card. And the time of day, you know, the guy priced it low and then he was doing power offers at 3, 4 o' clock in the morning. Oof. Like if you're tough, tough. And I know the card's already shipped, so some good shape there. But yeah, the. The example I wanted to give was there was a card that actually ended in golden that I was kind of watching and interested in. And it's a card that I've wanted for a while. It's in the 1895 and 300. Hugh Duffy. Okay, great card. Tough set. Not a lot of examples of it. There was a authentic. I think it was authentic color added that went in gold, and it went for a reasonable price. Went for like $1300 with buyer's premium, which is maybe slightly more than they've been going for. But I mean, everything goes up. Everything's been going up. I thought it was whatever, you know, I. I decided not to kind of not to go for it. There's been a raw copy on ebay for about a few months. And they're asking. It's. It's a. It's a best offer they're asking. It's. It's a beater, but it's, it's all. The card's all intact. There's paper loss on the back. There's like a pinhole. It's. It would great. Authentic. Most likely. Maybe you eke out a One and they've got a ridiculous price on it. They want four grand for it for like in a best offer situation. Yeah. So it's not there to sell. Right. Well, so I messaged the guy because. Just because I'm like, you know, I got nothing to lose by doing this because I don't want to. Even though it's best offer, I still want to like have a conversation, just be like, okay, you know, I just asked him, I said, look, I'm interested in this card, but is there any way at all that you would take somewhere. Would you. Would you take 800 to a thousand dollars somewhere in that range? I probably should have said like an actual number. But like, would you. Would you at all possibly consider the card? And I used the comp. I said this card in golden in authentic. That's pretty nice. Just sold for 1300 and you have a raw copy that is whatever. So I just like, would you take like a thousand for it? And he comes back very quickly and very nicely. He says, I couldn't get that low. And he shows and he references a raw comp that sold in April that this card was way worse than his copy. Like the left hand, whole left hand corner was missing. Something took a bite out of it. Like not just like the, like the little corner, like, like rat nibble or something. Like something chopped this card and then like it's missing parts of the rest of the corners. The image of Duffy himself is, is okay, the rest of the card messed up. That sold in a Buy it now in April for 1500 bucks. Right? And he's like, yeah, I don't think I get that low because it's absolutely destroyed. Copy sold in a buy it now for 1500 bucks. So. And I said, thank, I appreciate the quick response and you know, good luck with it. So it's just this, this thing of like this. It's. You can. When there's so few sales in these, you can pick and choose which comps you want. You know, a card. It's a very. It sucks. It's a really. It's a real comp. It's a real comp. But it's annoying because we know it doesn't have the same value that, you know, an auction at Friday night at 8pm on the east coast. You know, it's just not the same. But whatever. Yeah. So that's what I wanted to ask you about is, is there. Should there be more of an awareness of a hierarchy of comps? Like, you know, should there be. Should there be an awareness yeah, yeah, that. My. That my. That my comp of a. The forget. The Forget like the condition or listen, at the end of the day, Jake, at the end of the day, if he wanted to sell the card anywhere near your price, there'd be nothing to talk about. Right. He would see your comp and go, oh, okay. And then go, okay, I'll do this so that it. At the end of the day, it doesn't. Almost doesn't matter. I know, but. But I'm just using that as an example. But what I'm. What I'm trying to say is like, okay, let's let. In this world that we. We. We operate in this. This world of mostly pre. We. We buy a lot of pre war. We. We are trafficking in cards that are. Don't get sold a lot like that don't. There's just not a lot of comps. Whatever. Sure. I think like, forget about like the card. Like which. What card it is. Whatever. I just think that a card that goes at auction, that's the best. That's the most real comp. Yeah, that's the truest. That's the. It's the best comp. It's the best. I don't know if it's the truest comp. I guess that's a word. I guess that's a great way to look at it. But it's the best comp. The best job is the Sunday night auction ends 8 o'. Clock. That's the best comp. You know that Stone Cold. That's it. I was gonna ask you. Would you separate it out by like auction house? Then like, is there a. Or like, do you think is like the bat is like the best for. It depends on the card. Because like the M101 Mathewson that I just bought, the guy would have got more money if he auctioned that off at rea. No question. Right. No doubt anybody's mind. Yeah. And you know, Tony. Tony Southern collector, pointed this out in the video that he did where he recapped the. You've never heard of anybody Tony Southern collector. Tony great guy. He. He. I wish. Or whatever. Whatever Petty called. I. I wish I could remember what. Petty's been going after me lately. Oh, boy. Let's. Let's save that. Really send the tone for Chicago. See out there. Let's see out there. There was a piece that I can't. I wish I could remember what it was, but it was like. It was like. It was a picture with a lot of the players, like portraits and faces on it. That sold in golden. And it went for a lot less than Tony expected that it was going to go for because it was an auction house. He said that they should have auctioned it through love of the game. And I agree. Right. It was not a good piece for a golden auction. So. So somebody. Somebody really lucked out. Well like for me for instance, I said. I said I was going to send all those PSA slabs I had. I got, you know, 1990 tops PSA 9s which is great for the registry guys. And then I got a bunch of low grade 53 tops and PSA holders. Low grade 55 Bowman's PSA and low grade 52 Bowman PSA. I think I got 100 and some odd cards that I gotta send. And I said I was gonna send them to God forbid Prostein. Oh and a few guys reached out to say it's not Probestein's the problem. But if. Send those tops cards to Probestein but send the vintage. Vintage cards to Greg Morris. Yeah. Yeah. So apparently just. Just because they're going to get the more. The better eyes. More better eyes. So yeah. So it matters where you send them. You know, what time you send them, what time of year you sell them. So. So yeah. So auction is maybe going to give you your. Your most sort of your best comp. And then. And then like it's like best offer kind of. Right. Yeah. And then probably. And then buy it now is. Is the. Maybe the least. The least relevant, the worst. Yeah. So if you. Do you ever try to have conversations with people and like the, the new. That nuance is like lost or does it ever really come up? Yeah. And you can even. There's some people, it's either they're just. They don't understand it or they're intentionally pretending not to understand it so they can hold up their number. Yeah. But. Yeah. What are you gonna do? Yeah. Much like it's an IPO conversation to people too. You know, the honest corners versus color versus red. You know, registration. I just think it's a lesson to folks like don't just take the VCP average or what it says in Card ladder as gospel. As good as those platforms are. No real problem now with those averages with these golden stickers. Yeah, that's a whole other question. You get a card that does 3, 4, 5x that's gonna. Maybe there's two of those that happen. You know, it's really gonna pull those numbers up. Just be careful. Really dive into those numbers. Right. And I wonder. I'm starting to wonder like are these, are these apps, are they going to have to pull out the stuff with stickers? Like is that in order to like that is tough. I mean this is, you know, that's tough to track. They should have the technology to be able to do that kind of stuff. And you know that, you know. You know, you know like Chris McGill is always trying to have the truest, you know, whatever's, you know, he's always trying to make that, that app. Chris Ho. Oh yeah, he, he's, he's always trying to, he's always trying to make card ladder better and more accurate and that kind of stuff. I give him credit for that. He does care. And so, but so the question, I don't know if he's been asked. I, I've never, I'm not aware of on any Saturday nights or anything if he's been asked about what they're doing about how to handle stuff with stick stuff with NBA stickers. But I think it as. The more that stuff is out there, the more it's going to affect the comps. You just, you gotta drill down. You can't just look at the. If, if you're really trying to, you want to pay the, the right price for a card drill down. Don't just listen. Especially if you get into the pre war stuff, I mean you have to look at it. You really gotta look at it. And it's getting harder and harder because with this market flying boy, it's tough to figure out what these cards are gonna sell for. Figure out what? It's tough. You know, you get a car doesn't sell for two or three years. That's tough. When things aren't going crazy. All of a sudden things going crazy. But good luck. Good luck. Yeah. Yeah. And we just saw in golden all of these Mantles that just sold for like record prices and it's just gonna. Yeah, you think that 52 tops is important. Who was saying that? You said that. You did say that. That's, I mean Tony was telling me was banging that drum today in this video that Mantle runs the hobby. People are shocked that he was kind of half ass surprised. But it's, it's not even, it's not even a question, buddy. It's not even a question he runs. It's unbelievable. Still unbelievable. Yeah, it really is. Okay, well that was it. I just wanted to, I wanted to. I just want to say. I don't collect mantle. I don't collect mantle. That 53, I saw that 53 Bowman color over the weekend. Oh, that Would look good on that. Look good on the bottom. Yeah. Just something about Mantle, you know, it's just. Yeah. Yeah. Tough pulls, pulls, Pulls you in. Pulls you in for sure. Oh God. Some of those cards is beautiful cards, you know. Oh yeah. And he's, you know, the big smile like he just. Yeah. The golden boy. Like I love my, my, you know, it's a card I've been thinking about moving on from too. And I'm, it's dangerous for me to say this. Come to me, come the, the, the red heart. The red heart. I love my red heart. But it's like at a certain point, is it like, is it like. Because I have, I have the 59 for my set. I have this. You know what's great about that card? Jake is on something. He's like, what you have right there is a thought. You have a thousand dollar poker chip for your poker for you, for your card game. Yeah. Anytime something comes to my, into my showcase that you like, I gotta get that quick. You go and I, but I don't have the cash. Like you're like, well this is always the worth a thousand dollars. That card will be on my person this weekend for sure. Like. Yeah. At the, at the Marlboro Show. Not good. Not necessarily gonna sell it or move it. I had it on my person the whole, the whole time at Strongsville too. What else do you bring? You ran anything else you, you want to know, don't you? Well, I mean just this conversation. Like I was just thinking because we got, we got the national coming and I was trying to figure out what's going to go into my, you know, little thing, little sash. What cards are going to be, you know, handy to pull out. Probably depends what lives to then. But you know, a Joe would a Cracker Jack. Joe Wood for one of those. Joe Wood. We'll see. Well after the trades. You know, if people have watched our, my videos and watched the hit list this week. Like I, you know, Matt and I did a big trade and I, I got an E102 Mathewson and I traded. The big piece that went to Matt was my Polar Bear Matthewson. But there was a bunch of other stuff too. So I'm like kind of, I'm pretty down on poker chips at this point. Like the stuff to like trade to move. Like I'm, I'm kind of a little bit tapped out at the moment. Like I, I like there was stuff that I, I move to you to get the Joss portrait. That was the other part of the trade. Yeah. Excuse me, was I got a Joss portrait that was like. That was the secondary stuff that I didn't really want to move. But I was just like, you know what? Like, I should. I should get this now, you know, because it's. It's stuff that either, you know, Hubble, like, I have the Diamond Stars and the. The spawn that I put in there. The just about everything, too, that you grab, nice as it may be, can easily be replaced. Exactly. That's exactly my point. Clicks away. Not the E102. Not the. And I. And I wouldn't say that the Matthewson, either. Not the Polar Bear Mathewson, but, you know. Yeah. I mean, this is. I'm showing the E102 Matthewson right now. It just doesn't. As soon as I saw this in your showcase the week before, I'm like, I gotta get that. Like, you know, that was. That was it. So. Yeah. Anyway. All right, well, that's it.
