NFL Kickoff: Drake Maye Cards, Arch Manning Hype & the 1986 Fleer Jordan

The FedEx man delivering the boom boom and Chrome Holly boxes. Yu-Gi-Oh Baseball. Baseball. Good. Yes. Good clarification. Yu-Gi-Oh We were talking about that pre show like. Yu-Gi-Oh Whose executive decision was that? Yu-Gi-Oh Lots of products coming out at non stop and it's like football season kicking off today and Bowman Chrome launching. I'd be curious if that actually impacted the numbers of the product like how well they did sales wise or if it's going to impact like the hype of the product because frankly I've heard nothing of it minus what we've talked about in shop. Like I haven't seen any news. I haven't seen anything about it. Well you want but you know where you got to go to get that news. Shameless plug. Yu-Gi-Oh it's good set up there like a good co host here setting one another up. The Collector Nation app would tell you on the release calendar that's on the homepage that is coming out today. It may still leave you with mystery of why but you would know and be able to see them like two weeks apart. The football and the baseball launching. You know baseball's all about like the end of the season which you've got I guess prospects for next year. I am a big football basketball card guy and I collected baseball growing up. It's probably. But my least depth of knowledge is full transparency. I can name the offensive lineman for like more teams than I would care to admit on in college probably. But baseball harder. I don't understand the logic of the baseball timing and someone can message us and enlighten us and there's a lot more baseball collectors than anything else. So I'm in the minority year. Yu-Gi-Oh But my thing is like baseball's kind of weird where it's like the number one draft picks pretty much go into minor leagues for a Little bit until they can kind of like prove themselves. So I think it's interesting like the, the concept because I feel like there's not a huge college baseball market, whereas like football there is a huge. Because they really go to play in the. Yes and minus this year. Minus this year, which is again, this is strange all around. We're not going to have a single starting rookie quarterback that I'm aware of unless like last minute change happens here. And before. Maybe they're trying to juke everyone out. Maybe. But it's the first time we were doing the math. It's been a long time since there hadn't been a single rookie. But to your point, baseball, you have that, you know, the college. Well, very few people go straight to college to pros. So you're still kind of tracing that guy to when he actually gets called up. And there has been a lot of call ups. We've been mentioning that on the app, some of the call ups, the impact of their cards. Yu-Gi-Oh I know Rock Chalowski got called up a couple weeks ago and so there you're seeing that. But I think it is. Baseball is strange to track because you, you never know when they're going to pop, you know. And Yu-Gi-Oh like the can't miss guys are pretty accurate, man. Baseball's. There's so many guys and it's all over app and if I watch, if I could watch more games, I might know more because you're hearing, you know, maybe the local announcers or whoever mentioned guys that are coming up. But like she's, it's, it's tough and you don't immediately. Because I'm a college sports guy. Like, so you don't immediately like you say I go fall in love with, you know, Cam Camarilla Clemson, and then, well, it takes him four years to make it to the big leagues or whatever. And speaking of stuff from the app, we do have some articles that bring up some of the players. We have NFL kicking off this weekend. We mentioned none of those star rookies, but it's funny, you know, the hobby's gonna find someone to. To value, and quarterbacks are always highest valued, so Mendoza and Ty Simpson lead that. But it's been fascinating to watch them kind of also crawl back to earth with their values because the reality is, I think the people that wanted them have gotten them. So you got a supply and demand curve kind of dwindling down, but none of these guys are starting. And it's like, it's a. It's a strange rookie class to me, like after the last few seasons. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, it's. It's weird to me. Like, I get why they're not starting them necessarily. You know, they want to keep them healthy, they want to see them develop. They. You don't want to see that maturity level. But also, you just spent how many millions of dollars to get them on your team and then you're not going to utilize them? Hey, we're saving them, you know, but it's. But it's the right thing to do because I think they've. Some of these guys have been fried early. Yu-Gi-Oh Playing too early because, you know, if you got a battle line or bat, you know, which is. Which is fair. But it's like, I don't know. I. I haven't seen it in a long time where pretty much across the board that's the case. And I wonder if it was because, like one team did it. So then they're like, okay, we can all kind of do it. Yu-Gi-Oh I don't know. That's past my pay grade of figuring out, but I think they, they. There's a lot of guys that I. Not a lot, but there's a handful that kind of come to memory that just really, I think got their development rushed along too fast. And so it's a fine line. You got to one-of-one now. So I think if these guys end up proving to be. I mean, Stafford's locked in. I mean, Ty Simps is not going to beat Stafford out if Stafford's healthy. But he is 37, maybe 38. I don't, you know, he and he get injured and Ty Simpson will be in there ready or not. And same. Same thing with Mendoza, with Kirk Cousins in Oakland. I just said Oakland. It's Las Vegas. Oakland Raiders. I've been looking at old Bo Jackson cards and it. All of them say Oakland Raiders. So Freudian slip. You know what? You know, I'm an OG by calling them Oakland, but Los Angeles, Las Vegas. Yu-Gi-Oh they were Los Angeles Raiders too, at one time. Yu-Gi-Oh So you're. You're just all people. But they've been four. They've been four different. Four different cities. People in the comments are going to be like, you don't know ball. Yu-Gi-Oh I know ball. It's. That's. I know I named every city they've been in, but yes, the Las Vegas Raiders. Yep. So if you had to. Partial owner, if you had to pick a rookie this year, who are you putting your money on? Most likely I like Downs in Dallas. Caleb Downs played at Ohio State. He's a freak and really good. His cards are actually showing that a little bit. I think. Only rookie to have a price and volume increase. Yu-Gi-Oh Because I think he is the like once you get through the, the hype and the. Okay, it's a quarterback. Oh, it's a new product and it's quarterback. And you get through all that and you go, all right, who's a dog? Who's playing and who's got the biggest upside? Yep. He is on defense though, which has a limit. But he's got a lot of playmaking ability so he could be exciting. I think he's going to be good and I think love could be great in Arizona. That's not enough to. I don't, I don't know if they have the team around him that will enable that. Yu-Gi-Oh I'd agree. So he's exciting. He's fast, powerful and runs great. I mean it's like got all the tools. He's going to be a good one. But I, I think the more I think about, I think Josh Allen's going to have a breakout year for your own well being. I hope he does too. That's all I know for sure. And I think Trevor Lawrence might too, you know. So I think Jacksonville and Buffalo are set up for big season. I need, I need this my. I mean we. I don't even want to talk about it. It's not related to this show. But I went to Clemson. Do I need to say more? I'm a Clemson grad. Grow up a Clemson fan. I need Josh Allen in Buffalo to one-of-one the title. I need J. Then to play Jacksonville and it be a nail biter to the end in the SEC championship. I need my pro teams to deliver this year more than ever because it looks. Looks very dreadful. See when I saw. So I was checking the score of the games while I was out and about this weekend and I, I went to Furman So I checked the Furman game and I was like, damn, they just got their ass handed to them by Tennessee. But, you know, they got paid a lot of money. Whatever. It was going to happen, Whatever. Then I go and check the score of the Compson game, and I was like, oh, oh, it's actually the same score. I was like, now that. That I do feel that's a little bit embarrassing because they aren't getting paid to be beat. No, we're paying. We're paying a lot to get beat. We're paying our coaches a lot, our players a lot for a very suspect product. And we. Hey, I'll be patient. We'll see what happens. Now, I'm not throwing any darts. I. The headlines are writing themselves now, and I. I have two words that encapsulate everything I feel before we turn the page. Now what? That. That's really it. That's my. That's my two words for Clemson. Okay. All right. Now what? Let's see. We lose Georgia Southern this week. It could be a Wake Forest moment. Tommy Bowden. Yu-Gi-Oh we'll see. Well, and not because I want that to happen, but it. It feels almost starting to feel that way a little. In a weird way, I didn't think I would say. And it's very different because we should build statues for our current coach, but we're not living in 2018, so we'll see. I. And it's so hard because he is such a. Oh, God. Nobody wants him. Oh, God. I would. I don't. I don't. I want him to fix it. But you have to fix it. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, you know, you're getting paid a lot of money. I want you to fix it. We don't have to be. We have to one-of-one the national title, but we can't go get embarrassed. It was actually his. His. This past game was the biggest score. Yu-Gi-Oh And that's telling. So we'll see. Okay, for your sanity, we'll keep going. Go Bills. Go Jaguars. In a weird way, more excited for Bowman football. We've got Bowman baseball coming out. They've got all the prospects, some that don't have card jet, like Malachi Tony, who had a ridiculous game for Miami. I mean, there's a lot of guys that had breakouts, and literally he doesn't have a card other than a leaf card. And I love you, leaf. No offense, but that's not a mainstream card and it's not one that most collectors are even have on the radar, you know, and it will be out with Bowman, you'll have. And then. Hey, Arch Manning. Congratulations. I know he needs, he needs another. He signed with Tops. I love how like they made it a whole theatrical thing that he signed. Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh And it's kind of like. I understand. I look, I love a good marketing angle and I love Pops. I'm just saying, like Wiki really had any other choice. Yu-Gi-Oh like they've got all the license. What do you got? Yu-Gi-Oh I'm signing, cashing it all in with Panini. Yu-Gi-Oh nah, nah, nah. That's what he needed to do is what Tops needed to do. Yu-Gi-Oh it's the most no shit news of the week, but still noteworthy nonetheless. All his cards will be there. It sounds like he one-of-one even have a non licensed version moving forward. He does have non license in the past though. Because I do. We've sold some of them. We've got Panini college cards with Texas. But every pro card for the foreseeable future will be wearing Tops or Top Sub brand. Bowman. I'm, I'm curious to see what his card market is going to look like in the new Tops product because I mean he's arguably like a good player but not like out of this world crazy generational. And it's, you know, his name is carrying a lot of that and you know, all respect to him. Like he stayed with Texas, like he didn't have to do that and. But I, I'm just curious as to how the market will respond to that because it's like do they care more about the name and the family and where he came from or how he's actually playing and you know, how he might do in the NFL, which presumably. Yes, he'll be going to. Exactly. Yes, yes, yes, yes. It's, it's exactly those things. I don't. And right now it's based his values on the surname because he, his stats don't support the number. Yu-Gi-Oh But the potent, you know, you could argue that he's shown flashes and potential. But if that name, that's surname in there, it's, it's a different, it's a different number. And I think he could be that guy. But he hasn't put it on film yet. Completely. He's throwing flashes of it, but he hasn't one-of-one at that level yet. This will, this, this year will be telling with that and then ultimately, you know, well, the pros will bear it out and I think. But the name will carry it longer than it should. I mean you see it with like Shador Sanders, like Yu-Gi-Oh it is his name, he's had moments of glory and he made. Ended up being starter last year, so he had some amount of justification, but it was name based. And it's still, I still think there is a level of that. And that's reality. That's, that's cards. There's awareness and there's, you know, desired, like around, you know, the legacy that their fathers, uncles, brothers, whoever it might be that carry that same name have built, which is part of the hobby. But at a certain point, it does become what. What have you done? And arches Arch Manning's story is yet to be told on that front. Hey, and he could have an Absolute generational breakout year this year. Oh, he could. He's got, he has the talent. I mean, there's no, there's no question. But let's see it. We'll see it. Jeremiah Smith's a freak, though. Let me just tell you that right now. He's gonna be one of the best riders ever played the game. I mean, he already is. He is unbelievable at Ohio State. I think he's gonna one-of-one the Heisen. So we'll see what happens. All right, switching gears a little bit, we are going to do our third installment of iconic cards and the history behind them. Yep. And this week we are going to be talking about the 1986 Fleer 57 Michael Jordan card. I mean, as I say, those names, those words, you can probably picture the card in your head in big shining lights. You know, can't really get more iconic than that. So. So want to hear, hear your thoughts on this card. So I grew up on a street called Ivanhoe Circle. It sounds much nicer than it really was. Had everything I needed, not everything I wanted. Had a next door neighbor. His name was Oliver Bruton. Oliver, if you're out there, thumbs up, buddy. You turned me on to basketball cards, but I was already a Jordan fan and a card collector. And everybody collected baseball cards like football. Basketball cards were not, I mean, they're. If they're, I don't know, 80% as popular as. Baseball's still number one by far. It was like 20% as popular, like, compared to baseball in 19, in the mid-80s. And I would. But I was a huge Jordan fan. You know, played basketball is good. And like, so he, you know, he was the greatest player at the time. You know, had his rookie season. I was like 8, 7 then. Coming up, Oliver Bruton moves next door, has the whole entire set of 86 Fleer basketball. No one had basketball cards. Like, again, you don't know how rare. Like if you mid-80s, they. I know they printed more than you realize, but they didn't print compared to baseball. Nowhere near. Yu-Gi-Oh So the fact that the next door neighbor had that set. I would literally go over there and just stare at them even then. And it didn't have the. Near the value they do now. I mean, they were worth. They're worth a lot. But not. But not nothing. I mean, you're talking about like Jordan Rick. Couple hundred bucks maybe. I don't know. Maybe. And. But I'd go over there and just look at them. I'd flip through, had the full. Every card. It was like the. And how rare that was. Like there was no one. I didn't know anyone else even collected or had basketball. He had those. I'd go there, stare at them and say one day I'm gonna have that. And I had posters all over my room and. But it. I remember that story mainly because he had Jordan. Yu-Gi-Oh I don't know if I would remember his name. I love you, Oliver. But you know. You know, we. We. But we had different friends. We weren't hanging out as much. But you had those cards. And I really like to look at them. And I think I'd made I don't know how many attempts to buy them. He never sell them. Damn it. He. I get. I. I wonder if he still. He's probably sold them by now and wishes he hadn't because now. Or they were thrown away. Yu-Gi-Oh Cause they were perfect. I mean, I don't know if that Jordan's a 10, but they were mint condition, so. Grew up always idolizing those cards. I could have bought it once I got back in the hobby. I mean, like, you know, a few years ago with boys and everything. Could have bought that. I buy that card. I mean, like. But I still. We've had a couple walk in the store, some crazy stories and different things, but still waiting on my version of that card. Yu-Gi-Oh But it is, you know, the iconic shot. The. It's almost created a lore amongst. It's. Sometimes you look at something like that is cool. But it's like, you know, the. The artwork on the flir on the quad. It's nothing. Nothing that crazy. Is it classic? Sure. But let's not overstate it. That gold, the flir yellow. Yu-Gi-Oh It's okay. But it's more of what it means and what it signifies. And it tells a whole story of his career. Like, he's in the air and he's going over everyone and he's about to dunk it. And it's like that's what he ended up doing to the entire industry. Yu-Gi-Oh And is still doing. And now his cards are just that much more valuable. But it was a chase then and a chase now. I mean, at the highest level. And it's. I don't know. I think it will go down as. And it's mo. It's. It's most people's top four or five most iconic cards. Yu-Gi-Oh 52. Mantle. I mean. Yu-Gi-Oh All that stuff. But the Honus Wagner, Mickey Manel, this card, and then probably ken. Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie card. And so. Which you talked about last week. Yu-Gi-Oh a few weeks ago. We've just been going down the list of junk wax cards that. That are really not junk. Only the Jordan was ever done wax the baseball ones maybe. But. Yu-Gi-Oh but it is a classic card and one I will own in a very high grade at some point. Yu-Gi-Oh You want to spend, you know, between 300 and 800,000 for a PSA 10. I'm gonna. I'm gonna find that thing like in a. Like a yard sale or something. I want to find. I. I gotta discover it. I'm gonna find Ryan, like, hunched over, like, oh, man, I'm a sucker for a good Pandora I spend hours going to the ones we already had. There was some back there that had some Absolute terrible cards in it, but I still found myself spending 30 minutes. I'm like, what am I doing? Going through things. Defensive lineman. Defensive lineman. Yes. We will be having an episode come out. We talked about the Jordan jersey last week going, but Rob go. Am I spelling? Goff. Am I spelling. I have to edit this appropriately? I actually. Rob. Yu-Gi-Oh Rob's Rob, who has the. Will be in figuring out what the word is. one-of-one we talked to Rob, who will be on doing an episode. Who. Oh, is the owner of the 1993. Yep. Game three. Game three. Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan game worn jersey. A lot of, like, statements there. In one. We did talk to him. Yu-Gi-Oh I wanted to. To ask him. I wanted to be like, okay, like. Like, because he pulled up the. The Rodman jersey. He just, like, he had the Rodman jersey from the same series. And like, I'm like, so is this. Is this Michael Jordan jersey? Like, is this, like, in your laundry basket? Yu-Gi-Oh like. Like, is it just, like, on a hanger? Like, how are you preserving? I was like, did you pick that up at Goodwill? Like, what, What. Where. Where did this come from? Yu-Gi-Oh because I did say, show us something because I knew he's already sent that one into the auction house, but he had that. He had the card of Jordan, who was in the jersey, you know, from that game. He's got a ridiculous collection. Nice guy. Yu-Gi-Oh High lie as well. You didn't know how to be able to spell that. I had or knew how to say it. I know. God. I did. Said something. Miami like that. It's a wild game. He owns the league for it. It's crazy. Oh, man. Yu-Gi-Oh But, I mean, that jersey, it mixed the cards like. It just. It shows Jordan's, you know, icon nature in. In the hobby. And I'm curious just to see what else he does and how else he markets that and what other crazy things the market does with him. We're gonna. We'll break it new. We'll break the news here. You know what. What they pulled from it, but it was a fun interview. Yu-Gi-Oh All right, guys, we're cutting in here. It's football week. Football alerts here on Collector Nation. I mean, a weird day for them to stop start the NFL season, but I think everyone's here for it. I know you were itching. Yes. For. For the season to start. So, you know, a day early, who can complain, really? We get the defensive struggle that is every Seattle game. The Seahawks, I love them. Their defense is badass, but, man, it does make for a lot of punting. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, it was a good first game to. To really ring in the season, but, you know, Drake May Goldin Goldin hold off. He was doing good until, you know, three interceptions in the fourth quarter is. I'll say. If I was drawing up, what. Okay, what would make for good TV for the NFL? Like, if I'm. What do I want that happen? Two of your league's top 50 players go down with injuries. A.J. brown. And I said 50, maybe top 30, but A.J. brown goes down. Sam Darnold goes down. Andre May throws three interceptions. It was a terrific game. Y. Like, I mean, it was a good game, though. It was a great game. I know there's. I'll get some hate mail for that. That's how it's supposed to be. It's not supposed to be offensive. No, but it was kind of just took a little Darnold getting hurt. I was like, on, like, the first place. Yu-Gi-Oh First series. I was like, dang. And. And I. It sounds like he's gonna make it back this season. It's not gonna be like, maybe a few games, like a hit Pandora or something. I don't know. They're getting X rays, but it's not. He avoided the worst of it. They. They said that it wasn't a fracture, but. Yu-Gi-Oh that he's supposed to get an MRI and stuff, but. So let's talk about cards. Drake May's been sitting the last year is the highest valued quarterback in that 2024 class. The last couple months Caleb Williams overtake has overtaken him. Hopefully my Color Blast continues to go up. He's not played very well when, when the lights are brightest and he's priced like a franchise quarterback, like our high end one. I don't know. At certain points the stats matter and the records matter and they've definitely been better with him. And I still believe in Drake May, but I'm not sure he's priced right. And I think, I think you're going to start to see that because he's. They got a tough early schedule and he's been exposed a couple times. Look, Seattle's going to expose a lot of guys. There's nothing to be ashamed of. But three interceptions in the fourth quarter and two of them were really bad. It's just careless against. You Goldin do that against the, the Saints or the Cardinals. No offense, Saints or Cardinals, but much less Seattle Zebra bowl champs. And so it's time for him to start playing better when, when it really matters. I, I think it's also an interesting question of like, you know, obviously the Patriots have so much legacy with Gronk and Tom Brady. Like they have really even in modern times, like carried the legacy of the Patriots. And I think that people really hoped that Drake May would kind of be the next wave of Tom Brady and would bring that level of excitement and level of domination that they had, you know, back few years ago. That's on hold a little bit right now. But I'm saying I think that his cards probably reflect that a little bit because people were so excited about his prospects and the prospects of the Patriots having another legendary run. Yu-Gi-Oh he looks the part. Yu-Gi-Oh his name sounds the part. His play at times has shown that. But all in all though, he's not quite there yet. And it's going to be interesting to see how his cards do because I own a few of them. I want, I want him to do well. I have no ill will towards him. I just, at a certain point, that last interception, man, you just can't. You, you kick a field goal and you tie the game. You don't. You just threw it up like you do that. It's like a. Yu-Gi-Oh I don't know Clemson college play, you know, like, sorry, Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, I'm eating my own dog food. But literally, it's time for him to play well. And look, is he going to get better without A.J. brown, his. His top wide receiver who's down with a high ankle sprain? I don't think he gets better without him. Yu-Gi-Oh So. But on the flip side, you know, I. I Prizm that his card market is going to be affected by this, at least in some aspect. Especially. I think you'll see a little. I don't think it's gonna like tank, but it's. I think it'll dip a little bit. It'll dip a little bit, but goodbye opportunity. Could be a good buy opportunity. People are really silly. They real silly. I'll jump in and buy. I'll buy some of that stock last down, because I do. But I believe two things be true. We can have objective commentary about the reality of his last two football games and the reality of his record against better teams. The second thing can be true is that I do think he's got the ability and the goods to be what he's priced to be already, if not better. But, you know, you only get so many opportunities and certain times you got to start cashing them in and it's. It's more the way like last night, like, you just Goldin lose the game for your team. Like Drake doesn't have to. Didn't have to. The defense played well enough for them to one-of-one the game. You know, like, you don't have to go out there and be Superman, but you can't lose it either. So. And the, the part I kind of struggle with is like the last interception could have easily been avoided and they could have tied the game. Realistically, they could have and they didn't. And so I feel like it's those easy mistakes and decision making that could be the issue. Yep. I don't know. We'll see. I know. And Sam Darnold hopefully comes back. We'll see. I don't think it's going to impact his cards per se. He's already underpriced. I think he's a good buy. I think they might one-of-one another Zebra bowl with him. It's two times the world winner. But hey, I own a trading card company and I'm in. I kids, a couple of them like Pokemon occasionally. I like Pokemon. Yu-Gi-Oh And so I'm like, why wouldn't I want to see what I get here? And, hey, you get five holo foils. Like, who's falling for that one? Who's falling for that one? But lots of repacks we're gonna open here. All right. Here you get that premium gaming surprise bag. Okay. All right, let's see. It may contain original sealed packs, hollow and rare cards only. Y. Okay. May contain. How much did. Like, if. If you were to buy these, was that an option? Like, could you just buy them? I. No, I don't think so. I Didn't really do the math on that, but. Okay. Low expectations is the way to come in with these. Yu-Gi-Oh that's. That's fair. Okay. The crappy singular repacks here. Yep. All right. Okay. Based on the. The packaging and backs, I'm gonna guess that these are worth a whole lot. Okay. When you get it. When I get a God pack. This is quality stuff here. Oh, okay. And anything? Nope. Not even Ex. No. Yu-Gi-Oh Not even. No. Absolutely not. Choice belt. All right. It didn't even say on to the next thing. This is excitement only made for video and YouTube television. Yep. Okay. This one here's the box 30 previous release Pokemon 5 Hollow including five holo foils. And we could get a redemption card. Find the first edition Charizard. Yu-Gi-Oh I'm counting on that one. It's probably. Is there a decoder ring in here? Like truly. Okay. Oh boy. I gotta love a good hanger. Fact. How did you even get that out so fast? That was impressive work. He's gotta know how to. I've. I'm a professional ripper. Are you kidding me? These hands clearly not torn through more boxes. This. This feels like a jumbo fat nothing. We got some Hollows and Absolute. I mean this would be really great for a kid that's. That doesn't. Overpaying actually crappiest cards in the set. So my brother, he was buying Pokemon cards off of Amazon. He was like, Yu-Gi-Oh we're getting like, you know, good hits. No, no, we're getting like trash. 500 cards for like 30 bucks. But I don't think they're real. And I'm like, they're probably real, but they're probably literally steaks too on there too. If they're gold like my nephew had. He's like this charge hard. This is thousands of dollars. I'm like, oh, buddy, I'm sorry. Now that he kind of knew, I think he just, you know, he could fool me. Well, I can bring these to my roommate's Title 1 school. The kids love them over there. So Yu-Gi-Oh all you can do. That's their prizes for good. I don't know if I. Even if we want to even get in on this. That was so demoralizing. If you go to Dave and Buster's and you one-of-one tickets, I would avoid these unless you want base cards. Not good. All right, well, that's. That's it. There you go. That's how the cookie crumbles.
