Part 2: Cards To Target At Every Budget!! MidLife Card Chase 5!!

I don't want to talk about this card anymore. Okay, Sorry. You're gonna, I, I'm. Man, I want you to get that card so badly. Okay, 20, 000 now. Never spent this amount of money on a card, Greg, you haven't either. No, the most I've ever spent on a card is I spent 5,000, I think did I spend. I don't remember what I paid for my Garrig. My 34 Garrig and my T206 Cob Red were both around 5,000, give or take a little. So I, I'm not a guy that remembers what he paid for everything. I don't care. Like when I give prices too, right? When I pay the card for price for a card, it, it doesn't matter anymore what I paid for it. For me, like I, I mean I, I do care about the value. I, I'll admit that I care about the value, but I don't care about what I paid. Like it's like my house. Like I paid what I paid. And like why, why hold on to that? So, okay, $20,000 budget, here we go. I'm first. I really. Okay, so let me talk here. I mean, I'm glad we, we've allowed ourselves to go over an hour because I wanna, exactly. I want to really dive into these things. Okay, first of all, Walter Johnson is arguably the best pitcher of all time. Okay, Agree. Pitcher cards are severely under appreciated. They're undervalued, they're cheap for whatever reason. That's a whole different discussion. The most iconic set to me of all time is not the 52 tops. The best set of cards in the history of cards is actually the Cracker Jack set. In my opinion, the Walter Johnson. I, I'm a pitcher guy, I played pitcher, I was a middle infielder, but I was, Roger Clemens was my guy and as a kid that was my guy. And I've always collected pitchers. I appreciate pitchers. If you look at winning teams over the last 30 years, all of them have at least one dominating pitcher. You have to, to be a successful team. So you're talking about the best pitcher of all time from the best set of all time. And, and when you look at this card like him leaning way back like that, and it just, I mean the baggy uniform, the long sleeves, the old school hat, the shadow, this is such a cool card. Now I put it at the $20,000 price, price point. You could get an absolute beater for 8,000. And they obviously go to tens and tens of thousands. This one part of the charm on this particular copies, it does have some caramel staining even though this is a 15. So 15s came in the caramel in, in the Cracker Jack packages but also were mail away. It doesn't have to be a 14. I mean would I rather have a 14? Sure, I, I would rather have a 14. Doesn't have to be a 14. Doesn't have to Be a 15. Doesn't matter to me. This card, I, I would actually like a little bit of, of caramel staining, I believe molasses on there. I really like this card. So I, I, I, I wouldn't, it wouldn't blow my mind to buy a really rough copy for 9,000, 8,000, something like that. But again, the Jackie is closer to 10 at the moment. This is probably another 10. And I just cheated and said well maybe if I got like a three, which isn't going to happen. I, I had to include this card because I love this card. I love that card too. Is that one of the few cards that Tony needs also? I think so. Tony needed one more common which he acquired. Yeah. And I do believe there's a couple of stars that he needs. For some reason I think it's this, but maybe I'm wrong. I think I, I think you're right. I think he does need this one. Yeah man, I love that picture. I mean those Cracker Jack cards, I have zero of them also, they're, they're pricey. I have one, I have a Cracker Cracker Jack. What do you have? I have a guy named Raleigh Zeider and the reason my favorite player, I had two, I had an Armando Marsance which I parted with at Strongsville. In part of my, I had again, sometimes you have to sell cool stuff to get cool stuff. I, I sold my Armando Marsans in part of the capital build up to pay for my Cy Young T206 portrait and my Goudy Garrig. So do you know who that player is or was that just for you to be able to get? Armando Marsans? Yeah, he's one of the first Cuban stars. Orlando talks about him a lot on his channel. He was an early Cuban player, very underappreciated player, but tells part of the story of the Cuban influence on baseball. And then the Raleigh Zider I have, it's actually in my case behind me because I collect Yankee Captain cards. And I would like to have at least one card of every Yankee captain. And Raleigh Zider was a Yankee captain for a year and it's not him in a Yankee uniform, but it's a cool looking card. It's a card that I would. Because Cracker Jacks have gotten so expensive, I, I could see myself selling that card and then buying a cheaper Raleigh Zider card to still have the box checked. If I was trying to make a big, you know, move to acquire a bigger card and I had to sell some stuff. There are 150 Raleigh Zider cards and, and that Cracker Jack is probably more like a 450 card because I think I have it in a three. So. Yeah. Would you need to pick up the Charlie Zider card before you sold it? Raleigh Zider, whatever his name is? No. Would you be, would you have, would you be able to sell it before you bought one? I, I would be able to get it later. I would be able to. To sell it and then go back at a later date to add it. Nice. How close are you on this Yankee captain? I have a card of every Yankee captain except for Babe Ruth. Yeah. I mean, if we haven't seen him here, I know that the Babe Ruth cards are most likely not going to be for 30,000. So he's not on your list for this presentation, right? We'll see. All right. David Chase's pick at 20K is the 51 Bowman mantle. Talk about it. In the business we call that a tease. Okay. The biz. Oh, my God, I love this card. I love you, Mickey Mantle. 51 Bowman. You've gone away from me. You're going higher and higher. Every time my heart beats, this card just becomes more and more out of reach. And you're super annoying for doing that to me, but I love it. And that 52 mantle is just even more out of reach. So this is the version that can kind of be close to being in reach, even though it's really not either. And I saved a lot of money last year to try to pick up either this card or the, the Jackie. And I feel like it's gone up a lot since then. The hardest thing about this card is just to find a nice version that's low grade. You can find nicer ones that are like fours, but man, that starts to get really, really expensive. I want a one that looks beautiful, but so does everybody else in the world. So it's going to be very tough for me to find that version of it. But I love the Photo. I actually think that as sad as this is, and I shouldn't be saying this on a video, but I still think it's undervalued, even though it's gone up a lot, especially when you look at it versus the 52, which I know anything look against the 52 looks like it's undervalued because that card is crazy. But look at Mick. Just look at him in this picture. He's so young. The colors are amazing. I love the sky, his hat. Every time that I watch a video of somebody that has this car, they usually picked it up years ago and I'm super jealous every time I see it. Love this card. It's gets disrespected because the 52 tops is so iconic and so loved that people, they kind of look down on this card, but it's a really cool image. The way it's framed in there is so cool. I'm with you, dude. I think it's great. I think it's a great card. All right, we've got. But because we can go longer, I'm going to ask you this kind of question. You don't go after Mantles because your dad, that's his, that's his jam. I want my dad to buy a 51 Bowman mantle and I want him to have one before I have one. Love that. So what? I want my, I want my dad to buy one and my dad. Oh, no, that's too much. Really, dad? Like, really. We could talk about what you can and can't afford if you really want to talk about it. And you can absolutely afford to buy a nice Mickey Mantle, but he doesn't allow himself to spend money on himself. So he says he can't afford it, even though he could afford it. Wait, I want to say something about that. Oh, sorry. Go, go ahead. And then after you're done, I want. This is. I, I, I don't know this to be true, but I think my dad's dream card is the 51 bowman mantle. More than two tops mantle. So I'm not going to go try and acquire this card before him. If my, if my dad never acquires one, then I would, I would at that point, this would be a card that would instantly be a card I would want to acquire. Great, great thoughts. And my dad also, because he was around the same time as your dad, his favorite player is Mickey Mantle also. And this is a car that in his mind, I think is out of reach as well as the 52 tops one. And I, because of being this Kind of a price. I don't see him ever buying one unfortunately because it's so much over anything that he would ever spend on a card and really anything that I'd ever spend on a card too. But there's a piece of me even that to have one in the family would like just be like so awesome. Where it would mean a lot more to me having it while he's around. If he's not picking one up. I like for him to like, you know, see a Mickey Mantle rookie card would be pretty unbelievable. But I agree with you. I'd rather him get it too than me. I just don't know if that's ever going to happen. So. Great thoughts. All right. Thirty thousand dollar budget. So again I, I do think we should never say never. Who knows what the future holds, right? Who knows if all of a sudden you know, they will discover that my house is built on the largest supply of oil west of Saudi Arabia. I mean it's. Well, you pan for gold, you the river by you. I could show you the biggest picker I've ever, I've ever pulled. But if you've ever seen a sesame seed, you would know the size of it. And I will say that we have just reached the one hour mark. We're breaking records on the clubhouse. Sorry, clubhouse guys. I just don't want this to end. So we're gonna keep going. Okay? All right. 30,000 first David Chase. I think that this is probably most people could guess what this is, but let's see. It's the chalk pick. Oh boy. Leroy Satchel, page 48 leaf. With your eyes closed and looking absolutely incredible. This is the pinnacle. This is my 52 mantle. For some of you out there, that, that's the dream card for I think a lot of the hobby. This is my dream card. I loved helping a friend of mine, Pete get his in Strongsville. I lived through him. When he ended up getting. I helped him negotiate the deal with Ash. He sold a lot of his collection to be able to pick one up and I just kind of, I dreamt of myself being in his shoes. But it was wonderful to have a friend pick up a card that to me is this important. And there's like a hundred and they might say that there's 200. There's probably 150 of them with cracks. Cracks and re slabs. It is so annoying to find. When you find them they probably jack it up by three times the price because they know so many people want one as badly as I do. It is as A leaf collector. It is the pinnacle of all leaf cards. And, and I know that this is the most expensive card by crazy amounts than I've ever purchased, but I will have this card someday. I will sell a huge part of my collection if this came up to a situation where I could make it work. The right copy, the right scenario, the right time in my life. This will be a car that I have, but just has to be the right situation. And it's not a sprint. This is going to be my long term grail card that I just absolutely love and dream about. Yeah, it's. It, it's one of the most important cards in the hobby. I mean it. What this card represents is much greater than just a hobby. It's a societal thing, what this represents. So I agree. And the rarity of it and you know, everything you just said. So not before you show this card. I'm very interested because I can't think of a card for you that is at this kind of dollar amount that you've ever had a conversation at least with me about. You probably have had one on your show that you yell at me for not watching all your shows. So I'm excited to see what the dream of all dream cards are for you. Well, I led this whole thing, I led this whole thing off with, you know, picking a, a ten thousand dollar card versus a twenty thousand dollar gap. It's. Yeah, if, if, I mean, listen, if I were writing the question, it would have said something like 10 to $15,000 card and 15 to $25,000 card. It would have, I would have provided ranges. So. Well, you could have come back to the question and said, why don't we include ranges on there? But instead you just said, yes. I said whatever you want, David, Greg will do is. This is collaborative. Greg, do as David says. All right, what's the. Let's see. I'm excited to see what the midlife nation grail of all grail cards are. Show it to me. Oh, baby. Now here's my thought. Here's my thought. Save the car for the podcast list. Oh, I'm sorry. So this is the 33 Gouty Ruth with the full body post. Was it number 118 or something? Yeah, now, now here's my thought. You know, when anybody, when anybody says, we're gonna go an hour and a half today, I hope that that's. Should we do part one and part two? That's what we should do. We should do part one and part two. That's what we're gonna Do. I mean, then we're gonna cut it off halfway through when we're not even like, having that discussion. It's just gonna end at a certain point. Oh, yeah, baby. Oh, yeah. It's gonna be like when Webster is flying away, holding on to the balloon and they're reaching for him and it says to be continued at the bottom. Oh, I was not expecting a Webster reference on today's episode. Did you watch Webster? Of course. But I was. I like Different Strokes a little more. Those are two similar shows. But I was so jealous of how Webster could open up that grandfather clock and like climb out of a staircase. I was like, it's like Anne Frank or something. Oh, yeah. And he also, he also really loved the laundry shoot. Right? I think it's tiny. All right, so the reason the that we're completely off the rails. We're breaking all rules. Wait, wait, I have a really. We're going longer so I can tell something like this. Whatever you want. When I went to. When I went to Boston, I went to school, Boston University. My parents came to visit me and when they came to visit me, I was a freshman in college and I was like, I want to take them to do something that's fun, that's something that's different. And. And I went to a comedy show and it was Webster and Skippy from Family Ties. Okay. I have an amazing photo with me and Webster, which I'll show one of these episodes. But so I took them to that being like, I just thought it was going to be so funny. My parents had no idea who Webster or Skippy from Family Ties was. But it was like a bunch of college kids in a place and watch the show. And I've never been more uncomfortable. Skippy from Family Ties was the filthiest comments, like, comic of all time. Started just talking about like every uncomfortable subject. My parents are both super conservative. I was just like dying in my seat sitting next to them as they were like scowling the entire concert. But that's what I think of for Webster. All right, Sorry, I just thought Skippy is Kimmy Gibbler before Kimmy Gibbler, annoying neighbor who was goofy. All right, so my card is the 33 Gowdy Babe Ruth. And I, I mean, when you say I collect vintage cards, people, they always respond. You mean like Babe Ruth? Like, that's always the question. You mean like Babe Ruth cards? Do you have any Babe Ruth cards? No, because they're freaking expensive as heck. The reason I went with the thirty thousand dollar price point is this Particular one, you can probably find one in the thirteen thousand dollar range, twelve thousand dollar range that, you know, looks like, you know, it, it went through the laundry a couple of times in the back pocket of somebody's jeans. But if I'm gonna go 30k, if I've got 30k, which is the hypothetical here, if I have 30k and I want to get a fairly nice copy of a very special card, I think instead of getting the upgraded copy of the Jackie, you know, or the upgraded copy of, you know, some of the other cards that would have been on my, my list as a possible option, I think getting this card and like a three or a three and a half would be pretty freaking cool. So I would, I think I would rather have this card in a three and a half than the Jackie 52 Jackie in like a four and a half. Like so. So this was more of a condition based decision. I'd love to have the Jackie, but I'd rather have the Jackie and a two and have this card in a three or a three and a half or something like in that range of what it would cost. I don't have a baby. Is this version well above the other three versions of this card of the Gaudi set? No, they're, they, they have different price points. I'm saying to you, I would be okay with any of them. I, I would be okay with any of the four Goudy roots. I want a Ruth and I want a Gouty. I want a 33 Gowdy Ruth. This one is a little bit ahead of the others on the list. But if you were to, if, if the right card appeared and it was any of the other four, the green, the red or the yellow, I would be totally cool with any of them. So this is not, this is not a head and shoulders ahead of the other. This is largely the most popular. It's the full body. It's the pinstripes. You know, you've got the, the, the wooden fence in the background. Whatever. It doesn't have to be. It's also the highest, the highest pop. It has the most copies of this by a significant amount. Yeah. Compared to the other three also, which, but because of the iconicness of this card, it rises to the same prices close. I don't prices. I don't need it to be this one. To answer your question, I would be okay with any of them. I just want a 33 Gowdy Ruth. This is my first choice. But the others are like 1B, 1C, 1D. And I've asked people this question, but I've never asked you. Let's hear the order of yours from best to worst of the of those four. I would say this one is one. I would say the red is two. I like, I like that. I like the yellow a lot. But the yellow, he kind of, he doesn't stand. He's not as prominent against the light background. So the yellow is probably my fourth choice because he just doesn't stand out like I want. When you look at the card, all you to see is Babe Ruth here. He stands out against the background. The ready stands out a lot. And then the green which is, is, is, you know, Darren, Darren has the green and he makes fun of the green all the time still. But I would say it probably goes this one, then red, green, then yellow. But I would love to have any of them. So in just a, a decent copy that didn't have condition issues that detract from the fact that it's a Babe Ruth card. I, I love it. That's. And this, this card has been the. All the Goudies have been on my list for years. Low grade, nice eye appeal versions and man, they are tough. Thanks for asking me what my order would be, Greg. My order actually would be green, which is a surprise to everybody because I like that he looks like Jabba the Hut in that picture. I think it's funny that he has like a defined face and it doesn't look like watercolor and I just think it's, it's. I, for some reason I like that card. I don't know why. Then red, then it's a, it's. I agree with you. The yellow and the full body are similar. I usually say yellow then full body but I think I've switched. I now full body and then yellow at the end. But I would be very happy with the yellow and I would love any of them. All right, let's move on. Before we move on though, for part two. Advertisement look at you. I don't even remember. I remember your card. I don't remember what I chose for you though. I don't know what that says. Like, I might, I might have some medical issues that they're gonna go back and study these videos to figure out what happened. Are you sleeping okay these days? No, I'm not, actually. I bet that has something to do with it. I'm not sleeping well at all. I, I, and, and I can probably talk about this at this point because by the time this airs, I am planning a trip right now where I'm going to be gone for almost a week and a half. And so I want the channel to continue. So I've been pre producing videos. So when I'm gone, the channel is still going. And so I've been doing twice as much as I've normally been doing. And I haven't been sleeping. I've had a really bad sleep this summer so far. So feel sorry for me out there. Sports Card Clubhouse Nation. Three videos post every single week for three years. No breaks. And you've gone on vacation. So you just always just overwork yourself before the vacations. Is that, is that the plan of what you do? I care about Midlife Nation. I know you do. And Midlife cares to. You're that warm blanket that is always there for us, which it is very appreciated. But we also want a healthy Greg Miller. So if you need to ever end that streak, it's gonna not be pipped. Okay. It's going, it's. It's going to end when the new school year starts and I'm teaching at a new school with new subject and it's going to be Lucy's soccer season. It's going to end and I will apologize to everybody now that I won't go to zero for a week. I'll have something, but I will likely not have the streak of three per. It will probably go down to two for a minute. That's my prediction. We forgive you. All right, let's do it. All right, so David Chase recommends to me the 49 Bowman Larry Dooby dooby, doobie, dobie card. All right, first question for you, Greg, because I know that this is what you care about the most. Is this a beautiful card to you? I'm not positive when I'm asking you that question. Is it. It is definitely beautiful. Okay, good, because it is to me too, man. These 49 Bowman cards are special because of how bright and beautiful those colors are. And when you look at a few of them, if you, if you ever pick up a flight, this is like the Perfect set to have a flight of cards of. Because it's like a red and a blue and a light blue and. And different colors. Orange, campanella, like different. Different cool colors. And this. First of all, we spoke about this on One of the 17 shows that we're on that Larry Dobie is underappreciated at this moment. I know he's getting more appreciation, but the cool part about this is, is that the card that most people were always thinking was his rookie card is the 48 Leaf card, which is the short print card. And we all talk about now that the 49 Bowman Jackie is the same year. We now know that leaf came out in 49. So it's the same with this Dobie, which is not talked about as often, that this is his joint rookie card and it is way under the price of the leaf because the leaf is a short print. It is a more attainable card. And man, it's just a. It's a beautiful card. And I know. So I'm gonna say this because I feel like this is going to be part of your pitch against it, is that you love the 1950 and 1951 Bowman version of the Larry Dobie card, which are also severely undervalued. But let's zig a little bit and go for this version, which is a. A more important card in my eyes than that one. And what do you think? I love the card. I've always loved the card. I was at the 2023. Let me think about this. No. 2024 Strongsville show and Ash had one in his case, and it was either a 5 or I think it was a 5.5. That's a high. And it looked like a 9. It had the best eye appeal of just about any card I've ever seen. And I thought about it and I went back and forth and. And at the time, he was asking like 12.50, something like that. And I was like, that's a lot of money for me. It was even more money for me then before I had built up some more card capital and stuff. And so I was talked out of buying it. I talked to a couple of people about it, and I was talked out of buying it. And now every time I see this card, I compare it to that card. It that looked like that at that price. And I feel like because of that, it's like the one that got away has made it where I'm not interested because I had my chance to get the right copy at the right price and I passed. So now it's a pass. So that doesn't make any sense. That's insane. But that's where my head is at. It's a great card. It's a great choice. Everything you said is true, except I don't really feel like it. You can put this card on the same level as the Leaf. Like when you say, well, they're both the rookie card. The Jackie and the Leaf are both the kind of, you know, the 89 tops traded. Ken Griffey Jr. Is a rookie card, but his 89 upper deck is really his main rookie card. So to me, this is, I guess you could technically put an RC next to it, but it's not the rookie card. So that's the only thing I'd push back on. But that's not a reason not to own it. That is just the one thing you said about it that I don't think fully agree with. But it's a great choice and I totally think that your pitch was successful. The. The reason why I even say that about the Bowman, because I agree with you. I, I always consider the Leaf. You know, I'm a crazy leaf head, but people push back at me about that, about the Jackie, how, like, you know, it's a joint rookie card. But of course, I consider the Leaf so far above that Bowman card. But I know that I sometimes get a little bit of hate for saying things like that. So you consider the Leaf version in your mind. I know it's a more iconic card, but you consider that the, the main rookie card for the, the big three, the, the page, the Jackie and the Dobie. You would consider the Leaf to be, in your mind, the more iconic rookie card. Is that right? 100%. Yeah, me too. It's like the 89 upper decks of Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey Jr. And Gary Sheffield and the guys that were the big rookie cards at the time, that's their best card. There are other rookie cards, but it's not their best card. Yep. And I, I completely agree. But the one thing about this 49 Bowman set, the only reason why I say that is because the Leaf set is just to me how Greg said the Cracker Jack is his best set of all time. That's the best set for me. So for me, I'm comparing everything to the tippity top of the mountain, but I'm telling you, this 49 Bowman set is also at the top of the mountain. I love this set. I love the Page, I love the Dobie, I love the Jackie. So it's not Me hating on any of these cards, it's just not the greatest set of all time. It's just a little step below that. But I, man, I love these cards. Yeah. All right, now my turn to recommend. I have absolutely no clue what I picked. I, I have, I don't know what the hell is wrong with me right now. So let's go ahead and take a look. Go on. Listen, if you don't have a Ty Cobb card in your collection, you have to want a Ty Cobb card in your collection. It's either you have one or you want one. It's Thai freaking Cobb. When you're talking pre war cards, there's Ruth, there's Garrig, there's Cobb, there's Walter Johnson, there's Cy Young, there's Christy Mathewson. There's a very small group of like, I have to have that person represented. And there's something about Ty Cobb. Now, Ty Cobb has a fair number of cards, but this is his most beautiful card. This is his most iconic card. He has cards that are more expensive. He has cards that are, you know, potentially have higher demand. This is not an overly rare card. This is a card that anybody could go to the national and say, I want to a copy. And they could come home with a copy of this. But this card is the, in my opinion, Ty Cobb card. So if you're going to get a cob card, this is the card that you want. And you, you have to have a Ty Cobb card in your collection. And why not have his most iconic and best looking one? The T206 set speaks for itself. The portraits within it speak for themselves. And this is Ty freaking Cobb. So you, I know, are more of a golden era. You're more of a 50s and 40s card collector. Your 40s and 50s make up the overwhelming majority of your collection. You've talked about not really going too heavy into pre war, at least not yet. But then you also earlier were talking about Lou Gehrig and wanting to have a Lou Gehrig card. Obviously, who wouldn't? I understand the demand for a gaudy Lou Gehrig card because those are his most iconic cards. Not necessarily his best, not necessarily his most expensive. But if you want a Lou Gehrig card, you probably want one of the Goudies. If you want a Ty Cobb card, this is the Ty Cobb card. How'd you, how'd I do? Amazing. I love this card. I, you, you I've said it before where a lot of these pre war, that's not Talking about pre 1933 Goudi have just seemed a lot older to me. I have purchased some before. This has always been on a list of mine. Sometimes it's a little lower than other times. But the hardest thing for me about this card is I need it to be a great copy. I need it to be a low grade great copy and they are not easy to find where I want the red to be perfect, I want the centering to be perfect and I want the registration to be perfect. The problem is it's hard to find those in low grades. I use. I have seen a few and they usually charge double highest comp of all time. And I and I. And it still tempts me to be able to buy one of those. So if I find the right copy and I have the money to do it, this will be a card that I buy. I completely agree with you.
