Talking with Chris Sewall about card theft, The National, and some trivia!

Hey everybody, it is Mike. And this is this week in Sports Cards joined by Chris Sewell. Chris, how are you today? Good, man. What's going on, Mike? Not much, not much, of course, this week in Sports Card brought to you by Auction Wire, which we'll talk about in a little bit. Chris, not a lot has happened these last couple weeks in sports cards which makes this week's in Sports Cards a little bit challenging. But there have been a couple of weird stories of theft that I don't think you're fully aware of based on brief conversations. So the first one I wanted to get your perspective on is a video I did yesterday where a postal service supervisor who had worked at the Post office for eight years allegedly stole a $3,600 Cooper flag rookie autograph out of somebody's package and then listed it on ebay. And the person who it was stolen from spotted it on ebay. And then they set up a sting with the police and she was arrested, the supervisor was arrested and they found drugs and other things in her car. And apparently she was doing this quite a bit. So what I said on my video was sports card companies because of the influx of cash in this hobby there, I mean, I don't know if you've heard, but cards are very valuable all of a sudden. I know it's weird. We're seeing a lot of companies, Greg Morris for instance, and some other sports car companies are removing any instance of cards or sports cards, trading cards from their mailing labels. PSA removed theirs. Yep. What do you think about that as a, just a preliminary technique? I mean that, that seems like a no brainer. I don't know. I'm sure somebody who wanted to steal from one of those companies could see, you know, figure it out pretty quick. But at least it does something to eliminate the a little bit. But yeah, I think PSA did that a long time ago. It's just, it's just like this is receiving. There's no. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I think sgc, last I knew still said SGC on their shipping boxes. But it seems as though that should be, that should be changed. Yeah. So what other thoughts do you have to prevent theft? How do you do it as a, as a dealer? I know I imagine that you have a little bit that happens, but you're also a high volume guy and when it happens once, it's no big deal, you just refund or whatever you have to do. But how do you prevent it as a high volume guy? Yeah, no, it's very tough. I've had three thefts in, in the last four years or I'd say from the post office or I don't know that there were thefts. I just shipped out maybe 20 packages once and five of them just never showed. Like they were disappeared all at once. And that happened three different times. So, you know, I switched, switched post offices, but I don't know what happened to them. I can put in a claim and nothing's going to happen there. I could have done like a police report, which I probably should have and I didn't. But, you know, if they were big enough, that's something you can definitely do. They were all like unique cards, but they weren't that expensive. So there was, there's no way I'm ever going to track them down. Yeah. And then the police report, it's got to be above a certain amount for it to be worth your time, right? Correct. Yeah. And I guess in those cases it wasn't, I don't even, I don't know if like, like a 20 card gets stolen. Can you, I assume you can fill out a police report for that? I don't know. It's a good question. Yeah. But again, is it worth your time? No, but, but unless you, unless you think that might prevent like it happening again. Yeah, I, I, I know some people who will spend hour after hour after hour just out of spite. Out of, not necessarily spite, but like out of principle to get back their $20. And I'm like, how much is your time worth? They don't see it that way. Correct. So another one that happened was this was actually ups, it was shipped and then somebody along the way opened up the box, like cut out, cut, used like a knife and cut the box, pulled out the card and put something else in there to keep the weight the same and then taped it up and then it got delivered and I opened up the box and it was like, it was like a bottle of cream, hand cream. And I know, I know the guy who shipped it, you know, shipped it good. Like, I know he wasn't scamming it. So it was definitely something along the way. But I mean, there's again nothing for me, us to do. I think, I think he put in a claim with UPS and, and complained heavily and they refunded him or gave him some money. But yeah, these things are happening more and more. I don't know if it's like, because cards are so valuable and they somehow know, I mean, in that particular case, I don't know how they would have known it had Anything to do with cards. It was just, you know, Bob Jones shipping to Chris Sewell. Like maybe they know me. I don't know. But it wasn't your brand of hand cream. No. Although I think I did find some use for it, but I don't remember what. So then the other thing that happened this last week, Saturday on Jeremy Lee's show, Sports Cards Live on Saturday night. Was it. Was it last week? I don't even remember. It might have been 10 days ago. Actually, before we jump in, what actually happened with the woman who got arrested? She. So she's. Yeah, I didn't hear. I haven't seen the video. So it was the story. Sure. There. I don't think there is any. She's just been arrested and she's. They, they. There's a lot against her. They found that she had stolen, allegedly a lot of things. Yeah. Through the post office. She claimed that a co worker had found the card in a dumpster behind the post office and then just gifted it to her, which is not believable. Feels like a reach. Yeah. But on her ebay, they discovered that she was just taking pictures of items that she was stealing from the post office at her desk at the post office while wearing her post office gear. Like they could see she's holding it and it's got, you know, like the corner of the. Or the sleeve of her post office outfit. Okay. So no updates on her yet, but it's probably not very good. I see. So not. Not the brightest criminal in all likelihood there. No, no, not at all. So once the Jeremy Lee one. Yeah. So Jeremy Lee was interviewing a guy named Steve and, and I've already talked about this quite a bit with, with Greg, so we're not going to get too heavy into this one, but he was interviewing a guy named Steve who had bought a card. So roughly half a million dollars. I've also heard 650, 000. The details are unimportant when it gets to that amount. Unless you're Steve, of course. Right. Steve had bought a card for about a half a million dollars and it never came to him. And he had wired the money, I think, or paid it somehow to a guy named Bruce. And while talking, while Jeremy's talking to Steve about this guy named Bruce, Bruce messages Jeremy through Instagram and says, hey, I'm watching Bring Me On. Oh my God, I gotta go watch. That sounds awesome. It was so awesome. I was watching it Sunday morning and. Because I can't stay up that late on Saturday nights. Yeah. And it was the best, I don't know, probably an hour of tv, the whole thing's three hours. But once they get Bruce in, if you can watch the beginning of it where Steve's throwing out the allegations and then Bruce jumps in that hour of them yelling at each other, that's some great television. And so the. The situation is this. Bruce is in Mexico and the buyer is also in Mexico for. For, sorry, the seller of Steve's card. And I think Steve is in Pittsburgh just based on. He's wearing a lot of Pittsburgh stuff, if I remember correctly. And Bruce is the broker of this guy named Jorge. And Jorge owns the card. And Bruce says that he has held the card before and he's seen it and he's. He knows that Jorge had it. But when he showed up at Jorge's house to get the card as the broker, the person who has brokered this deal. Yeah. Jorge hands him a box and. And Bruce says, is the card in here? And Jorge has. Yes. And Bruce slaps his mailing label on the box and mails it off. And Steve never gets it. It's. The box is like empty or it has, I don't know, hand cream in it or something. So what's your take on this? That's on Bruce. I'm sorry, that's exactly what I was on Bruce. So that was. Bruce was. That's actually an easy one to me. Bruce was defending himself. Like, what was his defense? His defense was that it. He didn't get any of the money. All the money was wired to Jorge and that Bruce has told Jorge to refund Steve repeatedly. Oh, well, okay, then Jorge is a thief, obviously. I mean, I guess it's on both of them, but. Yeah, no, Bruce is. He's pretty guilty here. Yeah. Bruce didn't commit a crime, but he is the. Unless, you know, he made up Jorge and he's the one being Jorge, but I don't think that's happening. But he's the one who was responsible and accountable for the package getting to Steve and he never checked. And the package, I think, did get to Steve empty, if I remember correctly. Okay. And he just. Bruce as the broker never checked to make sure that the card was in there. I mean, that's just mind boggling. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Is that sort of. That's kind of what everyone's concluded here? No, no. I've seen a lot of takes on it and people mostly focus on Jorge. And Bruce seemed totally broken up about it. Like, he's really upset about it. It's been a year or so since this happened and he, you know, a lot of people know it was him and he's really broken up about it that Steve lost his money. But, and, and people are swayed by that. And I agree he seems genuinely upset about it. But in my opinion, he did not do the job of a broker by not opening the box. He should have opened the box to make sure the card was in there for sure. Like I, I mean, Jorge is obviously the criminal. A thief and a criminal. But. Yeah, no, I mean, I think if you were. I mean, if the agreement is between Steve and Bruce and Bruce is going to go. Which it sounds like it was, and Bruce is going to go manage this. Yeah, Bruce is. I mean, if I was Steve, I would sue Bruce. Yeah, yeah. I mean it was, it was really good tv. So they were yelling at each other, but Bruce was like a nice guy about it. Yeah, he was. He apologized to Steve, but he was. Steve was yelling at him, making accusations at him. And, and Bruce was apologizing, but also defending himself. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Interesting. So. So the general consensus. So there's not a general consensus. No, half, half say Bruce just is sort of like an innocent bystand or, you know, just unlucky and it got screwed a little bit. Whereas half are saying it's on him. Yeah. And then there are a lot of people who say Steve should have flown to Mexico to pick it up, which I agree with that too. Sure. Yeah. But I mean that's, that's a victim shaming kind of. Right, Exactly. I mean, if you're trust. I don't know, I would, I wouldn't wire somebody that much money, but I don't have that sort of money, so I don't play in that game. So. Yeah, Yep. Okay, interesting. So we're five weeks. By the time this airs, we're. We'll be four and a half weeks from the national. Are you excited? Not as much as usual. Yeah, I'm, you know, I'm excited as, as always. But my last year's national, I didn't have the greatest time. It was sort of a bunch of random reasons, but yeah, of course I'm excited for the national. How about. How about you? I am probably more excited than I've ever been for the national. Let's hear about that. Why is that? I don't know. I think I love it. I love the national. Last year I, I think was it in Cleveland the year before, which I. I loved it in Cleveland. And last year I just had such a great time. I've met a lot more people and so there's more people for me to connect with. The. You guys CIA saved the. Yeah. Which I'm really excited about. Usually I go for like two hours and this year, I don't know, I might go for. I might stay up late, Chris, which would be great. Yeah. You're an early to bed, early riser. Yeah, I'm asleep by 9:30, up by 5. 5:30 at the latest. Yeah, the. The place, the place the CIA got is open till midnight, so, yeah, it'll be. I think it's from six to midnight. Shoeless Joe. Yeah, Shoeless Joe's. Shoeless Joe's. Yeah. So get there, you know, so. Yeah, I expect to see you. I wonder. So have you ever got crazy at the bar? No, I don't even drink, Chris. Not at all. No, no, no, I never liked alcohol. It was never my thing. And at some point I was just like, why am I doing this? Okay. But not necessarily drinking. I'm saying like you get karaoke and you just start dancing or something. Silly. Um, no, I'm very well. First time for everything. I'm very much an introvert, so I love going and talking to people, but making a scene of myself is not my thing. I mean, you, you have a YouTube channel, man. How can you be an introvert? I'm just kidding. I'm an. I'm an introvert too, but I can occasionally. I can occasionally let loose. Yeah, I think we can work on you a little bit here. You let loose without alcohol, then I'll let loose too. Yeah, sure. Yeah, Yeah, I don't need alcohol. Yeah, it's. I'm excited. Shoeless Joe's is walking distance. It's a bit of a long walk, but we walked It. Last year when. When the YouTube get together was unceremoniously bounced from its location. Yeah, crazy. Yeah, basically. Basically, for those who don't know, the YouTube get together is like a yearly thing that was put on by Mike Moynihan. It started off as, like, 20 buddies just hanging out, and, like, little by little, it's grown, and then it would just be like a random get together. Hey, we're go hang out in the lobby over there, whatever. And last year, it actually got too big. There were too many people that they had to get shut down, and so the whole thing got sort of canceled in the moment, which is a big disappointment because a lot of people go there and, you know, it's one of the key things they want to do when they go to the nationals. Meet all the. You meet all the YouTubers, meet famous people like Mike Junk, Wax, Hero, and others. And then. So, yeah, so it didn't happen last year. And then this year, CIA is taking it over and is running it, and they actually reserved, like, an entire restaurant so they can't get kicked out. Yeah. And Mike Moynihan has done an amazing job with it, built it up into this pretty big thing that makes it a destination event for the national, where a lot of commenters, a lot of viewers. You don't have to be a YouTuber to go. No, a lot of commenters and viewers love going and meeting their favorite YouTubers. Yeah. Yeah. So cool. So are you setting up as a dealer at the national this year? No. No, I'm not. CIA will be there, and I might be hanging out at their booth a little bit, but no, I'm not setting up as a dealer. Setting up as a dealer at shows I've. I've really soured on. I don't really enjoy it so much anymore, so I very minimally do it. I'm an introvert because it's actually the same reason I'm an introvert. I love going to a card show, but sitting at a booth talking to people for 10 hours just exhausts me. So. Yeah. So what will you do with the national? I'll walk around for two hours. Then I'll go hang out in my hotel room for two hours. Then I'll walk around for two hours and repeat, rinse and repeat. That sounds perfect. I know. Yeah. And I'll go get a nice lunch with you, hopefully one day, and we'll. Yeah. These sort of things. But, yeah, no, I need. I need. I need consistent breaks when there's a lot of people around. Yeah, I'M I'm staying about three quarters of a mile away, which makes it more difficult for that back and forth. Okay. So I'll try to pack my time in. Like, I'll go at, I don't know, 10am and leave at 3pm and that's my whole day. And then I'll, I'll do something for a few hours because I have to have that downtime. Yeah. Or it's. Yeah, I hate it. I have to have a little me time. Quiet time. Yeah, no, I think, I think so. For people who don't know about introverts. Let me, let me, let me enlighten you. It's not that you, it's not that you don't like people or you're shy, because I'm not shy at all. And I love people, but being around people just drains you. And so if you're around people too long, you gotta go recharge by yourself. That's kind of, that's kind of why I define an introvert. That's very much me. I love. Yeah, but I get tired really quick. Exactly. Somebody once explained it to me 15, 20 years ago that an extrovert gets their energy from being around people and an introvert, it drains their energy. And that was the perfect explanation to me. But I love it. I love people. I love meeting my viewers. I love, I love the short. Meet the. You know, I don't want to stand and talk for 40 minutes. No. In an aisle. It's like a, you know, two minutes is perfect. Yeah. And most, almost everybody's like that. Yeah. Yeah, agreed. So CIA last year was upstairs, which was a nightmare for everybody, but even more so for CIA. You're still upstairs this year, but they've, they're saying that they're going to open it up significantly more. Right. I actually don't know their situation, the, the table situation. I'm not sure. They might have gotten down. I'm not sure, to be honest. If they're upstairs and it's the same situation, I'm not going to be hanging out there because there won't be any room for me. Right. So if anybody wasn't there, hadn't heard the upstairs last year, they packed like, I don't know, 80 tables into this tiny little space with a tiny, very narrow aisle for people to walk through. And like I walked down to the CIA booth, which was three or four tables into this, this aisle, and I asked Jeremy if he knew where a certain dealer was, and he said, yeah, you got to keep walking. And I started Walking down that way and I couldn't make it. There were just too many people, too many backpacks, too many suitcases, and there was nobody moving and I couldn't get through. And I was just like, well, I guess I'm not going to that dealer's table. Which is really. It's tragic for those dealers that they just couldn't get people to their tables because the national decided to pack them in too tightly and they had so much space. We assume it was because of insurance or whatever. It was so much open space right there that they just didn't utilize. It is truly one of the most remarkable leap poor things I've ever seen at something like a National because it's the easiest fix of all time. And it was so dis. Such a mess. So, yeah, there were like four rows there. You could. The rows were wide enough. The aisles were wide enough for two people to walk by, barely. So if somebody's standing at a table looking at cards and somebody's standing at the other table looking at cards, there was. You couldn't walk by, or if somebody had a backpack on, you couldn't pass them. It was like so. So thin. And then the dealers were so crammed in and their tables were so tiny. And the room behind the booth where they hang out was like the size of, like being in the front seat of a car. Like, you could barely fit two people in a chair and he couldn't get up and walk around at all. And it was remarkably bad. And then it was like, in this massive room and they were only using, like, one quarter of the room and the rest of the room was empty. Expand. Yeah. I don't know, but from what I understand is everyone complained and they're fixing it. Yeah. Yeah, that's what I've heard. I've heard that they've. They have a good fix. Yeah. So we'll see. I'm excited. I love the National. I think it's a great show. Obviously, there are going to be flaws there. We will find some flaws this year, too. Yeah. But overall it's very well done. It's an awesome show. Seeing the people and the cards. You see cards there that you will see almost nowhere else for sure. Wait, but how many. How many major shows do you go to a year? Is it just the National? The national in Strongsville? I went to Strongsville this year. Yeah. Are there smaller shows local to you that you go to or. No? Yeah, so I go to the show just outside of Boston, Mass. They do that twice a year, I think I go to the November 1st one. It's like the first weekend in October, first weekend in November. Last weekend in October. Ish. And I go to that. That's. That's a big vintage mostly show. Oh, nice. And it's. It's really good. And I go, there's a Portland main show that's really small. I don't go to that one anymore. My collection, it's too small. It's the same dealers every time, and they have the same cards every month. You're too good for it. I've outgrown it. And then I would love to do Philly. Yeah, I would love to do Philly, Chantilly and Dallas. Chantilly's not up and running anymore that. That was. But I heard it's coming back. Yeah, maybe it's been about a year now, huh? But, yeah, it might be. Yeah. Philly. Philly's good. Dallas is good, too. And then what's the one in California? Bourbon. Yeah. Yeah. Or I think they call it the West coast national now or something like that. Yeah, I would like to go to any of those. So I don't know. I really. I said before I went to Strongsville that I'm going to rotate. I'm going to do Strongsville this year, and then next year I'm going to do Dallas. And then Philly and I had such a great time at Strongsville. Oh, yeah. I hated that. I had such a great time. What's wrong with having a good time? Met a lot of great people, did a lot of great events. It was fantastic. So I'll probably end up going back to Strongsville every year. As long as they hold it the way they have and everybody's going. Okay. Yeah. So Strongsville. You highly recommend Strongsville because I've never been to Strongsville. Yeah. Yep. It's. They have two sides. They put it in a big gym, and the half of it, roughly, is vintage. So it's a dedicated vintage show. Yeah, I love that. I love that they, like, had to separate the. The old folks from, like, the. The hip young kids. Well, it used to be a just vintage only show. Right. And then they merged it with a modern show and. And then so they. They have a curtain separating the vintage from the. No. So us old folks don't have to look at the skateboarders and the young. Right. And, you know, the vintage. I thought most dealers had good prices. Okay. And then I walked. I went to every single modern table because I heard that there was a lot of good modern cards there. And I. I Don't know the modern market as well as the vintage market. Yeah. And I would, I would find a card in the market on the vintage, on the modern side that I would think, oh, that's a really cool card. And I'd look at the price and I'd be like 400 bucks. And I'd look up the comps on card ladder and it's like a hundred dollar card every time. It's like 4x what they're selling for. And I would think, you know, this is a, this is a good card. I would buy this card for 100 bucks. This is a straight up my alley 100 card. Even before I looked up comps, it felt like a hundred dollar card. But they're priced at 400. So much. But it would be like, it would be like a rare 90s insert or. What sort of card are you talking about? Like some rare. Could have been anything. There was, there was a lot of huge variety of modern there. Huh. Okay, well that's, that's a turn off if everything's forex. But the vintage side was really good. I bought nothing from the modern side. Okay, you went all, you went all out with the vintage. Yeah. And I would think so. I bought a Mariano Rivera rookie auto 1992 Bowman. And that was on the vintage side. I think the modern side was more. What's the cutoff? What's the cut off for vintage? Like they, like they literally. On the vintage side, you're literally not allowed to put out modern cards. Right. Like the, the show promoter will walk around and kick you out if you do it. I don't know. That's a good question. I, Somebody told me not like if you have like one or two card, but if you, if you have a, a notable modern presence, they won't, they won't allow it. I don't know what they won't allow it means, but that's what I understand. I understood. I wonder what the cutoff is. Like an 89. 89 Griffey. It's a good question. I don't know. Yeah. I saw you counting, so I'm wondering, Because I would guess that like a Zion rookie would be in there and then like a Kyle Lewis rookie. So the, the pandemic. People went crazy with. With cards. And we know that adding up Shohei's offense plus pitching, he's leading the league in. In war at 5.4 currently. But when you don't add up the pitching and. And offense, who leads the League in war? Just. Just straight up war. Nobody is adding them up. Somebody has war at 5.0. So Shohei, add them up. 5.4. But who's leading the League in war in just, you know, standard war excluded. Like, not. Is it like, not an obvious answer? It was a little surprising to Me, not like, I think if you paid attention in the first couple months of the year. Yeah. Really surprised that this guy has come on at this point in June. I mean, like, so not. I don't follow baseball day to day that way, but I would. I would. My guesses would be the names who are like, you know, having great seasons. Like a Jordan Alvarez, Ben Rice, Bobby Witt, I think is having a pretty strong season. These are the same guys I've named, too. Kyle Schwarber. He's like having a great season now. Yeah. But he doesn't get a lot of WAR because I think he's a DH and he's a bad baserunner. Not amazing, but both very solid. I want to say his OPS is like 9:50 maybe, and his war is at 5.4 because he plays great defense and he's a great base runner. Yeah. Oh, wow.
