The Truth Behind Card Comps in the Current Market

I will talk people into certain things. I'll be like, I don't care what you do. Me buying or not buying it. Am I going to go cry on one deal? I just give them sage advice and time is money. The comp matters for what someone pays. But what would someone take? I did see that The Josh Allen one of one gold NFL Shield auto was pulled. That's a big card. Probably 200 grand. Yeah, if you're a Josh Allen fan, that's the first top pool shield that's legit. Something I've noticed is like, you know, everyone's wanting to buy low, sell high. Nobody's wanting to buy high and then sell low, obviously. So what does a fair transaction actually look like in the hobby? Exactly like seems like that's world but that's what we live in and everything's digital, you know, so it's like we're all pedaling digital goods in some way, shape or form. It's one big video game. It. I, you know, I think we're moving towards that. Right. Sometimes it feels like that. It feels like that, yeah. I don't know who's hitting the buttons though. Big brother. How are things on your end? Oh, they're good. You know, like stores can't keep Pokemon in stock and everything else moves pretty good. We're our breaking team. Will be live next week officially. Oh, that's awesome. And what platform we're going to start on whatnot. We have a foundation there from when me and the boys broke and we'll kind of roll from there. We'll welcome all, all players but you know, it's just the tech. It's honestly it's. They're the, the most, I guess, mature live selling platform for, for the hobby y and it's as much as, you know, an easy roll out because of that on some level and we have some establishment there already. You know, I love Jay and my guys at ebay. I got, oh, hey, we might get over there, you know, revisit that. We don't really have any allegiance to anyone. It's more just we want to live, sell and that's sort of the, the, the first place to go for us just based on ease tech and all that stuff. But you know. Yeah, free agent though. Everyone. For anyone out there. Exactly. You can get them cheap. Agent, get them cheap while we're cheap. Because I'm telling you, we're going to do it right. I mean we're going to have the tech obs setups. I mean and let's just say I'm creative at everything else. I got some, something on my, a few things up my sleeve and I know everybody will copy it by the time it's successful. But that's okay. We'll be the leaders. The flattery is the greatest compliment. Whatever they say. Yeah, exactly. We'll take it if it happens. And if it flames, then we'll just keep doing what everybody else does. It sells enough anyway. Yeah, imitation is the best form of flattery. Flattery, exactly. There you go. Yeah, I got it. But we got some ideas to make it fun, interactive, entertaining without throwing the baby out of the bathwater. We know what people are there for. What's the. It's called gambling. It's okay. Get the kids involved early and all. Exactly. What's the, like the makeup of a typical Pokemon buyer? It's a very, it varies. I mean it's definitely. I don't know, you've got, obviously they've got discretionary income on some level, but I think they spend a pretty large, I mean a large portion of discretionary. They're, they're collectors. That's their one pastime. Yep. Like they, they probably like there's a lot of couples. Yeah, a lot of families and couples like. And I'm talking about not just like a young 22 year old couple, like, like families, they're like Pokemon families, like literally going through the value boxes, buying the boxes. And you know, we have this one couple that comes into the shop all the time and, and they're like the sweetest. We've seen them at the card shows in the area and they actually started getting into Pokemon because of our shop. So that's been kind of fun to like. Our shop's kind of grown with their hobby interests which has been cool. It's cool. I mean I'm sure you'll see a lot of that especially with like kids coming in and building collections. And that's a community part of it, right? Yeah, I think there's. It's hard to put a finger on exactly. Like, I know what my pre. Disposition was to it, like four years ago, you know, like, oh, either kind of not geeky's not the right word, but sort of, I don't know, comic bookish kind of like fairy tale land. Like, people, like, they like the games and adventure stuff. And I don't know how you classify that person. And that's certainly part of it. Make make believe. I think you're painting a good picture. I get it. You know? You get it. I know what that adjective is. But let me tell you. Is that person still in it? Yes. But is it much broader than that? Absolutely. I think you actually have this world where, I don't think two years ago, sports card people and Pokemon people kind of coexist. It's two different planets. But these two. We have it very much in our store. And they're revolving around the same sun now. Not saying they kind of both. There's mutual respect in the game of collecting and doing your thing. And you've got sports cards leaking into Pokemon. Kind of like me and the boys. Hey, these are cool. These are collectible. Some of the art's cool. We're not playing the game. You know, we might play make believe in the backyard, but when we were four, but we're not still doing it. But, you know, like, I'm just saying, like. But I think these worlds kind of are blending a little bit. I think there's also, like, a crossover because, I mean, we've talked about it on the show so many times, but, like, you know, Charizard's not going to go break its wing. Like, it's always going to be in good shape, in good condition. So I think a lot of people who get tired of, you know, their favorite player injuring themselves. Yeah. Then they go to Pokemon because there's less of those uncertainties. Yeah, Yeah, I agree with that. They're not going to get in trouble. Do you think your status in the community is higher now that you open a card shop? I kind of stay below the fold. Bl. Like, I am the most out there, not out there guy on the planet. Like, I would 100 agree with that. Like, I am. I do a really good job staying under the radar locally and while being out there nationally where I need to be. And it's good for business. And I just. It's not because, like, oh, I'm too good for local. It's more just not the politics of it or the. That it just seems like that comes into play, like the more you're under the microscope. Yeah. And. But I do think there is absolutely. And I embrace this part of it that there's a community feel to the store and I am happy and to be a servant to this community. But I don't need to be at the mayor's. You know, whatever. You know, like I take satisfaction of whatever this does for the community and I think it's doing a lot because we hear it, but I just don't need the political theater around necessarily. So he makes me the face of it. Yeah, exactly. Go. How's the drive thru going? Are people driving through? It's all marketing. It's talk. They talk about it and they ask about it. It's exactly what I thought it would be. So I think it does what it was intended to do. I just picture Bella with like the headset like they have at Starbucks getting a poke. Let me get you. Yeah, I think, Brian, I mean I. I think you and I talked to us. I didn't put it there to get 500 more people buy into the drive thru, but I put it there because it's a discussion point and people ask about it and they think it's cool. And I do think it will. We can unlock things that would make it be used more. On Mondays we're closed. Yeah. Giveaways or on Mondays we're closed. But we can make limited options available only through the drive through. Well, people would probably come through the drive through and we could do hours where that, you know, we could. And do specials through it. Like for something that's new like that, that's never been done. If we really wanted it purely to get more business through the drive through, I know how to unlock that. Yeah. But it's. But right now it's just marketing. People see it, they talk about it and it's a unique feature that we have the ability to turn on or off whenever we want. Yeah, it's cool. It's a cool flex. It's also unique and you're winning because people are talking about it. So I do have a question now that it's like a week after the release of Topps Chrome Football. Have you gotten to open any. And what are your thoughts on the product? Both of you? Oh, I'll let Brian. Yeah. Yeah, I opened some it. I think they. I think Tops is doing a great job. I didn't. You know, if I owned a shop, I would have like I would have to look at the product a lot deeper and understand it more. So my guys went over to Card Vault. Our friend Chris Costa set us up with a few boxes. So we, we did some social media stuff there. I thought they were cool. I mean they're cards, but I think Topps is going to do a good job with that. Yeah, I mean I've opened quite a few, like more than I care to admit or will admit on this show. And pulled some bangers actually. Yeah, he didn't record it, but fanatical Puka Nakua. That's a couple hundred. A couple hundreds out of a hangar box. Wow. I've pulled out of 50. Jalen hurts gold. I think I might have talked about that last week. I can't remember. Time's running together. And then pulled another out of 50 rookie. I can't remember the name. I've pulled like, I don't know, a thousand dollars worth of cards out of probably maybe 800 in boxes. Oh, you crushed it. Then I've gone. Yeah, like that's, that's doing well as we all know. Like that might not sound good, but let me tell you, if you open a thousand dollars worth of boxes, do that 10 times. How many times you make more than you love. That's why it's called fun and degenerate gambling. No, it's just. It's entertainment. Yeah. That's what it is. That's what, that's all. We saw it as education, but we did get some good cards. The cars look good. There's nothing. And I don't. Why would you change something that's so successful. The printers are what they are like it, but it's not. There's nothing earth shattering. I mean even the. The case hit I got the fanatical card was beautiful. I mean it was a nice card. It's cool looking card had its own little flare. I know there's a few other case hits that people are raving about, so I haven't got one of those yet, but let me tell you, there'll be plenty of chances. As much as we rip, don't give up. Yeah, I'm not a quitter, Brian. Keep going. Yeah, he brings in a new stack every day. Cards for us to inventory. The kids open those, you know, bring them in, but I don't know. It's good, but I don't know. We've got a ton of it. So we're selling it. We're gonna. We got trade. We gotta have a lot for trade night this weekend, you know, It's a big football. We've talked about this. No baseball around here. So football sells Pokemon cells. So we're gonna have this place jacked. 100 plus. That's the goal. And the fan. The fan base is spread out. Right. I mean, you got some Panthers fans, Falcons, I would say, like mostly Panthers fans. Clemson fans, Falcons. I mean, like, you got a lot of college and then Falcons and then you got Panthers fans. But being in South Carolina, there are Panthers fans. But I think. I think South Carolinians like me. Like, I'm a Buffalo fan and Jaguars fan. Right. All the Clemson guys. But like, there's a lot of people that since there's no pro team here, they're. They have pro teams everywhere. Yeah, probably for do. I mean there's definitely. I bet you the percentage is bore Carolina Panthers just because they're two hours away. But it's not probably what you'd think. It's not like, oh, 90% are Carolina Panthers fans. It's probably like 30%. So I did see that the Josh Allen one of one gold NFL Shield auto was pulled. That's a big card on day two. And it was by a kid in a card shop. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. What do you think that's worth? Six figures? I would think. I mean, probably 200 grand. I don't, I'm. I'm throwing, I don't know, parts of the board here, but it's. It's a lot. I mean, how do you even price a one of one card? Like based on one of the same card from some similar set? Like, even if it was 101, I mean, there's a. There's a proxy for everything. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, at. At. There's. Every year he's going to have a 101 shield. Yeah. Right. And so. And it go and be in tops first. I mean, you got some multipliers, as I like to call them, that added up. Yeah. You want that if you're a Josh Allen fan. Like, that's the first top pulled shield that's. That's legit. Next year it'll probably be half of that price. Whatever they get. Yeah, yeah. Because like all the hits are like unreasonably high. I'm just gonna be transparent here. And like the gold. The gold, the gold hurts. Jalen hurts. That I got out of 50. Beautiful card. I mean, a gold. A hertz out of 50 out of prism or something like that. Current year, probably $60, maybe 62 to 100 bucks out of 50. I think that's registering from. Sold it for 300. Yeah. So there's the multiplier. That's, there's a multiplier there that if that has Don Russ written on it, even if it's like they're optic or whatever. If it's at a fifty, that's a hundred dollar card max this year. Wouldn't you agree, Brian? I mean I found that ringing like probably. I know we're give or take 20, $30 here or there. I think I feel like I know this at this point and that ain't a 300 card. If, if it's one of the other brands, just the normal year, I mean it's still a good card. I mean, heck out of 50 hertz, it's a good pool. But it's not like it's not three hundo. No, no, hold it on ebay and you know the world market, I mean that's one thing. I mean and you got to sell them for that if you want to. Oh God, you gotta sell them. There's some cards that I slow play purposefully, like our stacks, like putting them out because I know they're going to do nothing but appreciate. Like, I'm like, ah, we'll get to those, they'll be higher by the time we put them out. And then there's stuff like that that I'm personally taking the pictures and loading it into our software because I'm going, this is worth as much as it's ever going to be worth right now. Yeah. And I think that, I mean that's the biggest, I see the biggest obstacle of you know, taking market share from ebay. I mean when you have a card like that, you're not sending it to fanatics. You know, you're not like, you're not selling to Walmart Marketplace or I mean you're going to ebay because right away you can world market, you can get that all those eyeballs. Yeah, everything's liquid. If it's, if you price it where it should be reasonably. And look, one had sold for 350 and one sold for 400. So I, I put it at, I don't know, 325 buy our best offer. I can't remember but. And it's like, yeah, I'll take 300. Yeah, you'll get it. And the next one will be 275 and 250 and exactly it's going to go down. And the same thing with like some of these other cards. I'm like, and like, I don't. It's fine. This is, this is sort of the arbitrage of the whole hobby right now in these little. And you just take advantage. You can hate on it or you can sort of be a part of it. Like no, I mean this, if you're collecting and you're wanting this all time value, don't buy your favorite player in Tops Chrome right now. Like wait about six months and see where it goes. That's advice. So kind of on that same wavelength. Something I've noticed is like, you know, everyone's wanting to buy low, sell high, nobody's wanting to buy high and then sell low, obviously. So what does a fair transaction actually look like in the hobby? I mean there's. Prices are interesting being from the financial markets. It takes a lot of volume and velocity to find fair market value. And so in the beginning, like if you're going to watch a market and learn about a market and trade in a market observation is where you should spend 80% of your time in the beginning because you'll start to take emotion out of it and then just have numbers in your head and data which are un. Like there's no emotion. There should be no emotion to that. So I mean the people jumping out to buy it, they're, they're buying it for a different reason but that it's not representative where the market should be. Yeah, I think sometimes there's a lot of talk about this when in reality most of the people that come in this store that I deal with it shows are very reasonable. Like I see a lot of trolls write about this. I see. And I, and, and I'm not talking about like the whole arbitrage of Chrome coming out at one price being up. I'm just about the overall like selling of cards, what they sell to us. Like people know like there's, we have a very, I've been pleasantly surprised, very educated community here. They come in and they know that like we're a store, we got overhead and we're not going to give them 95% of the last sold of anything. Like because we, we would out of business and they'd like for us to stay in business. I have even had that conversation with one person like just saying like if you'd like for us to stay in business, you don't want me to overpay on all your cards, then you won't have a store in town. But it's not because I'm getting rich on making, because if I have to sell it on ebay, I'm losing 15 to 17% right off the hoof. And if it waits a month and it goes down and yeah, it can go up, but it sort of evens out. I do. But I think there's a lot of talk about this un. Fairness or complaints or all that. But the actual people that come in the store that sell us cards are very reasonable and we're very fair. And I, I don't know. It's transactional too, right? Like at some point, like, what am I willing to give up to walk in the shop and get money for compared to listed on ebay? You know, five minutes there, then having a mail it and then having to talk about offers and, and respond and you're like, listen, like, Honestly, for that 5% extra, it's not worth it. And that's where I think that there's always going to be that premium to buy in person at shops. And I will talk people into certain things. I'll talk them out of things too. I'll be like, I'd probably just, you know, you could make more doing this. Or a lot of times I'll go, if, you know, if I'm buying some bulk or something, I'll be like, do you want to real. Do you much time you're gonna deal with 200 people, you know, on. On Facebook marketplace, or deal with shipping out 200 things or 100 things or 50 things. And like, I don't care what you do me buying or not buying it. I'm not gonna go cry on one deal. I just give them sage advice of time is money. Yeah, I think that like, it's interesting because like, where, where do those prints? Like, if you had like all the information in the world of every trade that happened in cards. And so like what we did at the options exchanges, we did have all the information. They legally had to come and give every single information award traded. There's some OTC stuff that is. That's too complicated even for me now. But, but like where do those prints fit in? Because when you go to ebay, I assume that people are like, oh, here's the comp on ebay, it's a hundred dollars. And you're like, yeah, but let's talk the. The value of that. You had to pay the commission. You have to ship this guy to ship it. And so the comps, I mean, that's a high comp because of the transactional cost that it takes to, you know, transact one card. And now you're talking about 200 cards. Yeah. Step one, get allocation. The draft. It would have happened last Night. If you're listening on the Friday like you should be. And you know Mendoza. Okay, look, there's a lot of drama. I don't, I don't know what I'm getting excited about. I mean, just other than it being a draft. Yeah. I mean, there's such a vanilla draft. I mean, there's some great. Not a lot of big QBs. You got Bendosa and everybody else. You don't have a ton of like, excite me. I mean, you got love from Notre Dame, like, excite me. Skill players. And maybe it's deep in other areas, but I don't know if Clemson offensive lineman's getting drafted in the first round. I don't know how deep that board. And I love my guys from Clemson, but I'm just saying, like, he's like our highest rated player somehow out of nowhere. Top, top 15, 20. Blake Miller, I think. Yeah. And he was, he was a stud. But I don't know, I don't know what it says usually. So are y'. All. It usually says that it's a defensive draft. Yeah. Are y' all gonna be picking up any cards after this draft or. I, I, I want some. Look, I'm. Until proven otherwise, I'm a Mendoza fan and believe he's the real deal. He might actually be the best of like the last five years. It might be. I mean, he's got the potential. I mean, I saying a lot with last year's draft class and I'm a huge. Caleb Williams. Drake may believer if Jaden Daniels could stay healthy, he might be better than all of them. I just never thought he'd be able to stay healthy. And so far that's proven true. Bo Nix, Michael Penix. But I think, I don't know, Mendoza has all the tools and the processing and that Brady, like, mentality a little bit that he could be serious. So I'm, I'm picking up what he's throwing down, but I can't. I don't know about anybody else. Yeah, I'm the same. I don't really have a, I don't really have a favorite and I won't be collecting anything from this class yet. You'll be going pro and something else besides this class. But isn't it like, you know, the people that are underrated that you don't really think are going to do well, like, they always end up, you know, like Brady, like, he was projected to do terribly and obviously did not. So I, I'm just interested to see, like, if this class ends up being way Better than everybody predicts. They always do that draft thing where they go back and say, okay, if they had to redraft a 2022 class in the NFL, what would that look like? They should do that for cards and be like, if you were buying. And it's probably very similar of like, if you were buying the 2022 class now, how different would it be than it was when things were when product came out? Yeah, Bowman basketball's coming out. That's Top's latest release came out the day it will have been sandwiched between our record day and release day. We've got some of that coming to collector station and it looks pretty cool. It's gonna have, you know, guy named Flag in it. Yeah, their playoff's been going on. I've been watching the NBA playoffs. It's okay. Game's been better. Yeah. But the regular season sucks. I mean, I'm just going to call that. But. And at first, all blowouts, Game one. But then all the guys came back in game two. Seemed like. So I was like, okay, this looks legit. Wimby got a freaking concussion. Dude was all over the floor both games. I'm like, it's gonna get hurt. Sure enough, he had a freaking concussion. Sucks to be him. Yeah. And sucks to be a card holder. You holding any WIMBYs, Brian? You have any basketball cards? Just Jordans and Kobe's and I don't buy much new. Ah, you're no fun. I'm the old guy in the bond market. Yeah, exactly. CDs. Smarter market. Hey, you're smart. You know, the smart investor. Market difference. And I get. Let's get those two. I gamble every day. Coming into my trading career and running tech companies like there's. I'm good with the Living in Chicago in general. Yeah. Just surviving here. Yeah. Just making it in every day. The. What's the sentiment? We're early, but I'm just going to bring this up since, you know, you're not a Cubs fan and the White Sox suck. What's the sentiment for the Bears going into next season? We. Are everybody high on. On the. On the Bears? No, I think it's. No, it's like cautious optimism is probably what. Okay. The best you can be. Is that the Chicago way after a lot of sort of like average years. Yeah. Yeah, that's it. They're eight and nine. At least. You stay loyal. I'm loyal. Yeah. I just, you know, I enjoy it more when I don't put expectations on anything, including, you know, life and sports fans. Fandom Yep. Last thing today, Target and Dick's both expanding trading card. I mean go figure. And there's no telling how much they're selling. Sell it every time. Dick's is stocking hobby boxes and select locations and Target is gonna have a larger in store presence. Probably gonna have to have security too. Like you know, kind of man, there's nothing worse than the Walmart or Target Nazi employee. Like it's protecting the 2 and 5 limit. Like it's like it goes straight to their head. It's like not because you're trying to take more but man, I go in there, the kids even now in the shop and I'm like look, I mean stop staring at me swan like yeah, I just over here trying to get some cars to rip tonight. We're not going to take 10 and think we can check out like you know I do have five boys. We could grab 25 but we won't do that. Card police. The fun police. The card police. The fun police. But if they weren't there then there wouldn't be any cards at all. I'll be next, next week I'll be. Hopefully we'll will be able to film this from on location. On location. Yes. We got draft week here where this will be airing on the Friday after the draft. So if you're listening you do know what happened. So we'll. But we're recording it right before it. But exciting times. We're just talking about it. I'm going to be transparent here. Literally that's the only way I know how to do it. But I want me some Fernando Mendoza on it cards. I haven't gotten them. I will be bidding and I'm not going to tell anyone because hopefully it'll have gone off and I've already won it by then. So I'm just going to. I'm just putting that out there. I know we're just kicking it off Barry, but tell me brother, what's going on? I mean by the Time this is done, the auction will be over. So. And by the time that this goes out, Fernando Mendez and more than likely will be a member of the Las Vegas Raiders. So it seems like a foregone conclusion. The rest of the draft though is like completely up in the air, it seems like. And that's what's intriguing to me because we have a ton of guys, especially Ohio State. I know they didn't, I know they didn't win the national championship or even the Big Ten this year, but, but still, I think Ohio State is going to see a lot of names called in the top 10. A lot of our guys, especially on the defensive side this year. I mean, Sonny Styles, Orville Reese, Caleb Downs, just an amazing defense this year and there's a lot of teams in the NFL that really need defense help. So super interested in that. And for me, the most interesting pick of the draft, I'm just diving right on into it is wherever Caleb Downs goes because I think positionally, like if you take position out of it, talent wise, he's a top two player in this draft, if not potentially the top player in the draft based on just like pure talent alone. So whatever team gets him I think is going to be very happy. Yeah, you nailed it. I think he's a freak. And Ohio State's got, is loaded with them all on the, on it roster. If we had just a, you know, built the all, all like freak team. It's like half high State and all on it guys like it's, they're all there, it's got. This is like the reason, you know, football is the biggest sport in the U.S. this, you know, American football. And this is why you need to be collecting on it right here. The draft coming up. These guys are all going pro actually in the pros. You know we, we joked about going in pro and something else. No, these guys are going pro in pro and literally your chance is to get them on on it cards. Literally we're looking at one of nines, like 100 ones. You get really rare stuff. Good looking cards of all these players before they hit it. I, I like Carnell Tate. I think he's going to be good NFL. He looks, looks like the prototype. We know next year who Iowa State's first quarter or wide receiver will be. We'll talk about him at another time. But nonetheless a lot of dudes on this list and a lot of names that I'm familiar with from watching game. I mean we're in that college football territory here in the south. So all we do is watch college football. I see all these names. I see Texas A and M littering this board. Putting Casey Concepcion who played at NC State. I watched him like Clemson up a couple times and then he transferred to to Texas A and M. He's a good one. A lot of names and it makes for an exciting time. You know, the draft is just fun, you know, like these guys get their name called, they put on a good theater around it and you know it's going to be exciting. I can't wait to see it. And we'll have to compare notes with where all these on it. Athletes, let's transition. Let's talk a little baseball and softball. Got a bit, some big stuff coming. Yeah, we do. Friday, as you're watching this release day for baseball, we got five teams dropping. Those being Wake Forest, wake up West Virginia, number one in the country, UCLA, then Texas A&M and TCU. Baseball is littered with top 100 prospects, including in that UCLA set, they got the number one prospect in the country, Rock Kalowski, who according to sources, basically all of the chatter says that he's going number one overall to the Chicago White Sox this July. So he's in there in the set signing autographs, has some super clean inserts including the brand new diamond cut. His teammates Will Gasparino and Logan Redmond have been climbing up draft boards recently. They're all on that UCLA set. And Texas A and M is a team that has been very hot as of late. They've got four guys that could potentially all go in the first round of the MLB draft and they all sign with us in the in the baseball set this year. So that's pretty sweet.
