Well, I'm back. Happy Hobby. I'm David Connis. Build a better sports car collection using a real world budget. That's what this channel is all about. I am extra special, extra happy, extra everything because I am back on the Happy hobby Sports cards channel universe, YouTube, podcast, newsletter, all of it. I'm very excited. If you missed it, I was gone for two weeks. I was out of commission because my YouTube channel got hacked. So when your YouTube channel gets hacked and you've put a lot of effort into this and it's been basically, it's not just your YouTube channel, but that's also your email address, when both of those things get hacked, everything is in disarray. You are basically going nuts because that means basically your identity is hacked. Somebody broke in essentially and became me for a little while. For almost two weeks actually. It was for a few days, but it was two weeks to untangle it. So I'm going to share that story with you today and we're going to talk about me getting back into making videos. What that means for this channel, what it means for the podcast and the newsletter, what it means for a whole little happy hobby sports card world. What it means for my collection, what it means for my life, what it means for you, the Happy Hobby listener. So we're going to talk about all that. First let's talk about what happened two weeks ago, June 12th. I. So I'd been, my YouTube subscribers have been climbing and they eclipsed 9,000 subscribers. And I noticed when I eclipsed 9,000 subscribers, I started getting people reaching out to me different. I don't know if that's a signal to somebody that hey, this is, you gotta advertise over here. But I started having people reach out more than usual, I think, asking if they would could, you know, send me a product I could review or to do some connections or collaborations or whatever. So I get those, got started getting those and they were kind of regular. Some I had worked out deals with and some I wasn't interested in. So one in particular. Now as Friday morning at 3:30 in the morning, I sometimes have trouble sleeping. My mind is always, I always got something going on. And one morning and 3:30 in the morning I woke up and I, I just couldn't get back to sleep. I was just stuck. So I, whenever that happens, I'll just usually get up, jump on my computer in the den, put some sports documentary on and just chill until I fall asleep again or until it gets sleepy in this case. I was going through my email and I came across someone reaching out, asking to see if I was interested in joining their network. So it was like an ad network where you jump on their network and they go off of your commenters and your feed and your YouTube analytics, essentially. And they then match people to advertise with you. They match you with a vendor or with a, a product, and then they might put ads on your site. So I thought, oh, that, that's interesting. That kind of falls in line with the other things that have been happening to me recently. So I checked the website out first. I, I googled it. I was like, yeah, this exists. This is the thing. So I looked at the website. It's a real website. So I started to sign up, put my email in there, going through the, the different, you know, mechanisms that you would do for getting a sponsor or getting a network to help you get some advertisers. And at one point they asked for my YouTube to connect to my YouTube to see the analytics. Now look, in hindsight, hey, don't do that. Don't care. Pause. Careful. I now know this, but at the time, again, other companies, this is not uncommon for other companies to do this. There's a company I, I use called Vidiq, which if you're a young burgeoning YouTube channel, check out Vidiq. They do amazing videos that help you improve your YouTube presence. They're great. They're. They're just, you know, it's like, hey, do this, Try this. Put this in your title, put this in your description, stuff like that. But they also have tools that you connect them to your YouTube channel. And they, they know when you've hit certain, hey, congratulations, you hit 500,000 views. Hey, congratulations, you hit 9,000 subscribers. Different stuff like that. And they give you different strategies and different things to try. Another company I use is Opus Opus Clip, which is great for social media. Again, they requested to connect to my YouTube. I said, hey, let's do it, let's try it. Because again, this is not that uncommon of a thing is what I'm trying to get across. Look, I'm stupid, okay, well, let's jump to the end of this. I'm a dumb guy. Didn't do enough research on this company. However, back to the story. I give them my YouTube access. This is at 3:57, I think Friday. There's a reason I know the exact time. 357. June 20th, 12th, 2026. We'll live in infamy for me. So gave him access. And then we're talking within a minute, within 60 seconds. All of a sudden I just started losing stuff. I lost. All of a sudden I couldn't get into my email. I was signed out. All of a sudden I couldn't sign on to YouTube. All of us, all this stuff. And I was like, we're talking about a meltdown. Like, I was just like, oh, Like I knew immediately, oh no, what did I do? And it was instant. So after for about two hours of frantically trying to get my YouTube back and my Gmail back, I realized that it's not gonna happen. So first off, we'll get, we'll go through what you should do, what I now know what you should do. I don't know that it would have fixed. I think it would have fixed things, but I don't know. But we'll talk about it. But this thing, when he went in and when he wiped me, he changed everything. He changed my phone number recovery, he changed my email recovery. Like you have a recovery address that's not the one that's tied to the account. He changed that. And I mean, this guy just, it was fast. Obviously he has some sort of system that he does. So, yeah, it was not good. Later that day, I'm still trying to pick up the pieces. I woke my wife up probably about 6 o' clock and I was like, I did something dumb, I did something bad. Here's the deal. So of course she jumps up because now all of our, you know, everything's tied to these things, right? I mean, I've. When you have Google, you, you have passwords that are saved on there, you have account numbers. I use Google Keep. There's, you know, all this different stuff. Everything involving your life is, is involved in Google. In my Gmail, I mean, this is a Gmail account that I've had since 2011. This is a Gmail and Google Keep. Google Keep is like a notes app that they use. Google Keep, Google Drive, I mean, just. Is just absolutely crazy. The different stuff that you realize you now lost access to. Now I also lost everything that I was connected to through Google. What I mean by that is have you ever gone to a website and it says sign up or do you want to just use your Google address? And I'm like, well, yeah, that's super easy. I'll just connect through this Google account. Well, when you do that, you're no longer, you don't. It's just connected. You don't have a password. It's, it's not, you know, a separate thing. You can do that. You can do an. Your email or Your ID and password. But when you do the. Automatically connect through Google, man, everything that I had connected through Google automatically. Bills or random stuff. Like just a lot of things. I can't even think to tell you right now. Like all the different things. So all of that stuff was gone, gone in an instant. So over the next two weeks I would find out all, each, every day it was a new little, like a nice little gift, like, oh, hey, you don't have this no more. Oh, hey, remember when you used to have this? You. It's gone. All these things were gone. So some of the things I just real quick want to let you know, like make sure you write all your passwords down. First off, have different passwords for different things. Sounds stupid, but it's a, it's a good thing. Have different passwords for different things. Have someplace have them written down and have them store them safe somewhere. Make sure you just do something with them, safe. So here's the other problem. A lot of what I had was in my Google keep notes because I'm brilliant, I'm smart like that. Hey, I'm going to save a lot of the account numbers and stuff like that. I'm going to save it in my Google keep notes so that when I lose my Gmail, which is connected to my Google keep, I'll lose everything. See how like just stupidity, right? So all Friday we're basically just going, changing accounts, changing emails, changing passwords, changing everything we can think of. Cutting off my credit cards, cutting off my debit cards, changing all the accounts. You know, with our, with our business, like everything, you know, my business credit card, all those things, all that stuff I had all day, all day Friday. And again, remember, I didn't have any sleep. I had probably like three and a half, four hours sleep. So I'm doing all this with no sleep, just, just an absolute nightmare. Ironically, I wasn't asleep, but it was a nightmare. So make sure you change those things. Make sure you write down the passwords. Something else with Google is now I haven't come across it since now that I'm back, but they give you eight codes, eight different numbers. Write down those numbers because they'll at some point ask you. All right, well, if you're you, then give us one of those eight numbers. Well, I saved those numbers because, yeah, just in case, I was like, oh, I better save these numbers. Guess where I saved them. And Google keep again. Look, I'm not saying I'm smart, man. I'm just bear with me. It was, it was. I'm 53 years old, 54 years. How stupid. But I learned a lesson as a valuable lesson. It's expensive, but it's a valuable lesson. So the things that I lost at that point, my YouTube channel, my Google keep all the connections to all the things that I was connected through through Google, my Gmail, you know, we're talking 15 years of Gmail contacts, all that stuff. So I'm trying to think of what else within that. But there was a ton of stuff also because I lost. Well, I'll get into that. So on. So that day, Friday afternoon, the guy, the thief, the hacker posted a live video. Now meanwhile, I've already told the friends on substack, I've already told the Happy Hobby Sports Cards newsletter people. The people in the chat said, listen, here's what's going on. It's a Mess. But my YouTube channel is gone. So somebody posted at. I don't know, it was like 11 in the morning, something like that. He posted. And it was a live video of SpaceX. I think it was the day SpaceX, their IPO came out. So it was a live video of. You know, I go on my site at David Ganes, it's a live video of Elon Musk and He's talking about SpaceX and all this stuff. And it's on my channel. So obviously Elon Musk didn't steal my, you know, my id. So I'm trying to figure out. But in the corner of that video, it's a live video, is a QR code and I forget what it said. I should have screen grabbed it, but I forget what it said, but it was something like scan this to learn more or some stupid thing. So I didn't scan it because I'm. I'm dumb, but I'm not stupid. I'm probably a little bit both. But I had already been burned, so I knew whoever took it over, they're gonna burn me again if I. So I didn't scan it. I told everybody on substack, do not scan that QR code. Which by the way, I've now learned that's a thing that hackers do. They will have you scan a QR code and that goes into your system and it sends them a bunch of stuff somehow. I don't know how it works, but it's a bad thing. So be careful when you're scanning random QR codes that, you know, it's a legitimate thing. For instance, we were out the other day at a restaurant. On the table of the restaurant was a QR Code. It said, scan here for the menu. So I was, like, about to do it, and Shelby's like, no leaps across the table, tackles me, shoulder roll. From what I understand, people go around and they put stickers on tables with that exact thing, scan this QR code for the menu. And now they've hacked into whatever. So I didn't scan it. And I think it's probably a little more involved. Like, you scan it, and then you sign up, and then he's got all your stuff, that kind of thing. So I'm sure it was a different scam, but it was essentially the same idea as my guess. So that was up for, I don't know. I, I, I left it. I would abandon it. I was so mad. So I thought about it, and I realized Patrick Imhoff, the happy hobbyist, the vice president of the happy hobby world, is he. I had given him access when I was out of town to post videos, but he only had access to post videos. He couldn't do anything in there, like change the password back or anything like that. So I shot a video that I got hacked, and telling you, the viewers like, hey, man, I got hacked. Sent the video to Patrick, and with a description of, you know what to do with it. So he posted it. Posted it later that day. That might have been even Saturday. I'm not sure. He posted it so that I could at least let some viewers know, hey, this QR code, this scam, this is not me. Somebody else is doing all this. So I was able to get the I got hacked video posted. Patrick was kind enough to post it for me and then told me after. He's like, as soon as I post it, I deleted my access and deleted my Gmail and all. Like, eventually, you know, he got out because here he. He's sacrificing. He's putting himself at risk. You know, if this guy realizes, oh, somebody else has access, let me go wipe him out. That did not come across my mind, but I appreciate him doing that. That was really cool. So he posted the video. I was waiting for the guy to immediately take the video down. He didn't. It was up for, I want to say, maybe most, maybe a day, maybe the next into the next day. And it got, like, 500 views, people checking it out. So that's what I want to talk about real quick is, man, the response from all of you that were watching all of you in the substack and the Happy Hobby sports card substack over@ghanis.substack.com man, everyone was awesome. Everyone was so kind. This was such a great community. It was breaking my heart that, that this just got ruined. This just got burnt, you know, like right to the ground. It all got burned down. And after so many attempts of trying to get my YouTube access and all this stuff, I realized I was like, it's done. There's nothing to do. There's nothing to do. So I was researching, trying to see what I could. And all the research we did was all coming up with the same stuff over and over and over that we had tried. There was nothing, there was no, no opportunity here. So at one point, but again, back to the response. There were people commenting on that video that I don't think had ever commented before, but they had commented that there was horrible thing and that they're real sorry and that they'll. Because I was basically like, hey, you know, in the video I say I'm, I'm out. Like I got hacked. I can't get back into it. Don't subscribe, don't, don't watch any of this guy's videos. Don't scan, don't do nothing. It's been good, man. I, I want, I thanked everyone. It was kind of like a pre eulogy. Like hey man, it's been good. It's been, it's been fun. I don't know if it's pre eulogy. I don't know what you call it. At any rate, it was weird. The response was awesome. You guys were really cool. I very much appreciate it. It made me feel awesome and horrible all at the same time. Made me feel awesome because man, I really missed it and I was, I was gonna be, I was upset it was gone. So it's good to hear that somebody noticed that yes, it was going to be gone and that they were sad about it. That made me feel good. So thank you again. Thank you. Over at the sports, the Happy Hobby Sports Cards chat, those people were awesome as well. They were all, what could they do? They were sending me stuff. People sent stuff, man. Just. You guys are just amazing. It was really cool. It was, it was nice to feel that it really is a good community. It really is. It's a happy hobby, man. This was something that made it not really a happy hobby for me for a minute. So I'll talk about that as well. Cuz once that was over, man, I was, I was in shock. Like it really was, it was, it was like there was a death in the family. Obviously it wasn't. Obviously that's a, that's putting it worse than what it really was. But you. I was walking around, like in a daze, like in a fog. Like I didn't know what the next, you know, waiting for the next shoe to drop. Like you think of that. Like, waiting for my, you know, identity. I immediately got lifelocked, like waiting for something to happen where my bank account gets drained, my credit card gets blown up, or, you know, even now I don't know that everything is okay. I could find out my taxes or, you know, my income taxes are, are sold, or my Social Security or who knows what is gone. So I don't know the rest of it. But I know for that two weeks, man, I was walking around in a fog. It was rough. So I didn't know what to do. So one of the things I had decided, I was like, well, I'm not starting again. I know that much. I'm not going to repost any. Also, most of the stuff I had, I didn't have everything to repost. So I wasn't. Even if I started again, I didn't have everything to repost. Oh, also in the things that I lost in Google Keep, that's where all of my notes are. Everything I've researched. If you saw my Google Keep and you saw into my brain, all I have is ideas and ideas and ideas and ideas. And then I research stuff and I stack it in this Google Keep and it just keeps going on and on. So I have maybe like there's maybe 100, 120 video ideas or article ideas in there. Plans for the Website, plans for davidgarnis.com plans for the chat, plans for making more things for the podcast and doing seasons of podcasts of different things, history, sports card history, new sports card collector content, things specifically, just. Ah, man, so many things. So many things. It was gone. The sports card history specifically. I have researched so much stuff to really educate myself and educate you, the viewer, like, but, but like to really understand all of these old sets from 1952 forward. And I've been building this cachet, what do you call it, this, this repository of all these different facts and all this different interesting information. And I've been sitting on it because I've been waiting to do all 75 years of tops and then start this series. It was going to be the nine Amazing Facts. It's a series I've done with individual cards, but now I was going to do nine amazing facts about each individual year of tops. All this stuff, years and years and years, you know, five or six years I've been Doing these videos. So I've been making notes and taking and learning all this stuff. So I lost all of it. I, I was gone. So I was, like I said, just walking around in a fog like we're talking about. I lost pictures, I lost, oh man, so many other things that I can't even think to share with you now. But so, like just recipes, so many, just so many things within my notes. I'm a note taker. I am a planner and a note taker. And I think it's maybe like a little dusting of OCD somewhere in there. But I, I just have stuff where I, I stack it all in there and eventually I, I can find it. I don't have to remember it because it's in there. I can, I can know. I can just search it and find what I was looking for. But anyways, all that stuff was gone. Walking around in a fog. What was interesting was it dawned on me after a day or two, couple days, two, three days, it dawned on me that I, I did have free time. Now this came at a really important time, strangely, because I had a lot going on in my life. My, my company that I work for, it's a family company. We're started to transition. My job became something different than I'm now learning and growing in and trying to take over some different responsibilities, a lot of different things. So this came right at that point where I was able to then, all right, well this is my new world. All up and down. This is it. So I was able to dive deeper into that. So that was nice. That was a nice blessing. So that was cool. I started reading more. I started reading more paper books, books, physical books, not books on Kindle, reading the Bible more. I started having a little more mindful time with people I care about. With my wife, Shelby, having more discussions with her. I wasn't just having my face in my laptop and, and, and not really paying attention. I, we were sharing more. It was cool. It was a good thing. My 83 year old mother had moved in a few months ago into this, into our house. Able to connect with her a little bit more. Able, just a little more interaction. Now it sounds like, you know, man, dude, you're in your computer the entire time. I wasn't in my computer the entire time. But in other words, once all this was removed and once I was no longer having to think about what am I doing Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, for the video, for the newsletter, for the podcast, what am I going to do? See, I'm, I'm A I'm, I'm the only guy here. I'm the only, I'm the. I write, I do all the research, I write it, I edit it, I do the video, I do the podcast, I post it in newsletter. I do all the editing to post it. Grab pictures, create the pictures. All that stuff. All of that I do all of it. Takes a lot of time, a lot of editing, editing these videos, it takes a lot of time. So normally I'll try to do it when I'm awake at 3:30 in the morning. Those are times when I would try to jump on and edit stuff and all that stuff. But this stuff takes time. So I suddenly had all that time available to me. Now granted it was four for a bad reason, but once I had all that time available to me, it kind of let me just see things a little different. Now this was the first time, I believe, since I was trying to think, since like the late 80s that I wasn't creating content and I wasn't busy each week doing something. Now back then we're talking about fantasy sports. I used to do a newsletter for our fantasy sports teams for our leagues. I do a newsletter. I, I mean it'd be two or three pages of stuff. Then once the wet once online and you know, you could build your own website. I built my own website and I started doing fantasy website stuff, did that for years and then finally connected with cbs, went and worked at cbs. That's what I did all day. That was my life, Writing, creating content, doing fantasy stuff. Eventually when I left there, I went and worked other jobs. Some were sports related, but some were just, I was just a writer for people. But on my off time, writing for my website, writing for sports Illustrator, writing for whomever the athletic. So I'm always creating content, always. Then 2020, 2021 I start my YouTube, YouTube channel. Now instead of writing, I'm writing and I'm creating videos. Writing, creating videos, writing, creating videos, podcasts, throwing all this in and just kept building up. It's, it was fun, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. I learned a lot. It helped my collection, certainly it helped a lot of things, but it did take up so much of my time. Okay, so like I said, it was a lot. I suddenly had this opening, a lot of stuff available to me. So somebody in all that, when I was looking to figure out how to get my stuff back, I was kind of resigned at that point. I don't think it's coming back, but one of the, one of the things was to Tweet at Team YouTube and let them know you got hijacked and they will help you. Says, all right, well, I looked. I couldn't get on Twitter in my computer because it's connected to my Gmail and I didn't have the password for Twitter. I have no idea it's connected. I just does the automatic thing and I'm in. No idea what my password was. The password I did have written down was in my. Oh, Google sheets is the other thing that I lost. I'm a big spreadsheet guy, love spreadsheets. So I lost a bajillion spreadsheets. So all this stuff, I couldn't. I was thinking I couldn't get into my Twitter. I checked on my phone, my phone was already connected to Twitter and just used my face to get into Twitter. So that was good. So I tweet, tweeted at Team YouTube, explained the situation, and sent him a tweet. I think a day, maybe a day or two went by. They replied and they said, fill this out and. And we'll get back to you. Fill us out and let us know. I think they first responded, we can work. Well, let's. What's your handle? Or whatever. We'll see what we can figure out. Then they respond. They said, we sent you a dm. So we started going through DM backs and back and forth. Now I'm dealing with not a person, I'm dealing with a team. They were pretty cool. They were awesome. They connected me with a form that I had to fill out. Now on the form, you have to fill out things like, what's your YouTube ID? Your YouTube handle is different than the YouTube ID. Oh, also, two day, two or three days after I got hijacked, YouTube shot closed the whole site down, Closed the whole channel down because it said on the channel, it said because of YouTube violations, it was shut down. So now my stuff's gone, gone, gone, gone. Like, I can't even see it. Which, you know, I don't know. Maybe that was good, Maybe it's bad. I don't know. In my head, I'm like, I don't want to give this guy views to then steal my revenue. But it got shut down, so he no longer got that. So that was good. And he was no longer representing me on YouTube, which I was happy about. It was, you know, it was gone. But it was sad because I had tons of videos, man. I'd. I've got, I don't know, 200 videos or 250 videos, I think, but Anyways, trying to refocus my brain here. So team YouTube. On Twitter, they said, you need your ID. I couldn't figure it out, man. I was going through old emails, like everything I could find that was because I have other emails. So I tried to see if I could figure it out, and I couldn't figure it out. Save life for me. I respond to them. Nothing. Finally they came back and they said, if you look through your old social media stuff, you'll see can find your id. At any rate, I found it, figured it out, filled out the form, and then little by little, things started to happen. First, I eventually got my Gmail back, which was. That was the huge. That was the biggest relief because once I had my Gmail, I had my Google keep, I had my Google sheets, I had all that, all my work stuff, everything. So that was awesome. Then I didn't know if the YouTube handle thing was still gonna happen. Eventually, three, maybe three days later, eventually YouTube came back on. Now it stinks about it is. And. And Shelby yelled at me when I complained about it. But because two weeks had gone by, I had videos that were scheduled to. To go up on like the Wednesday, the next Wednesday and the Wednesday that followed because it got flipped on the lights, you know, the switch went back on. Those two videos immediately got posted. There were two videos that I've been working on for a long time. Research and then the shoot and then the edit, all that stuff. One of them is the Dandy Dozen vintage baseball that I redid. So they. That all got. Oh. The other one was I did a piece on every Mickey Mantle base card. They both got posted literally back to back at like 11pm Friday night. Pick a worse time to post your most important videos of the past month. That was probably it. That was. That was the worst time. So of course I'm excited that my YouTube channel is back. And the only reason I found out it was back, they still haven't emailed me to say it's back up. But all of a sudden, Shelby's on her phone. All of a sudden she got a thing that said, hey, it just said one of your videos was posted. So we jumped on and it was a few minutes ago that video got posted. So I'm mad because I then had to take down the Mickey Mantle video because it was literally posted a minute before, you know, seconds before the other video. So it was just a wasted. Like no one was gonna see it. So I took that down. My vintage Dandy Dozen still went up and that got, you know, it's it's got. It's got more video, more views than I expected. But had that gone up in the middle of the day, I think that would have been a huge, huge video. What are you gonna do? It's not that big of a deal, but it was just something where I was like, did it really have to be Friday night that this happened? It could have been like Friday or. Yeah, Even Wednesday at 11 in the morning or something. Anyways, so now let's talk about the comeback. We went through all this, all this nightmare story. Let me tell you about the comeback. Now. I didn't know if the YouTube channel when, if and when it was coming back. And if it did, I had to make a decision, like, what am I going to do? Am I going to. I've got this new lease on life. Am I going to continue doing videos and sports card content and all this stuff? I got a newsletter, I have a podcast, all this stuff. What am I gonna do? So essentially, yeah, I'm doing it. Look, you're seeing me do it, but it's gonna be different. It's gonna be a little different. The future of the Happy Hobby sports card world is going to be a little different. Not in a bad way, just in a different way. In a way that there's going to be fewer videos. If you go and look through my list of videos, you'll see there's a bunch up there that didn't get a bunch of views. It's stuff I threw up because I was like, I need to get three video, three videos a month, a week. I try to get up. And so it was, you know, WNBA Blaster. Nobody ever watched those videos. So my plan is basically, I'm going to be doing videos that are also my podcast, which I was already doing, that are also my newsletters, which I was also already doing. The things that I'll be changing are these videos won't be edited, won't be as sharp with the awesome, you know, cards flying in, all that stuff. Maybe at some point there will be different ones that I probably will do like that. But for the most part, it's going to be me talking with you and sharing the stuff I've learned or sharing the stuff, you know, rankings or whatever. The Happy Hobby Sports Card Chat or the Happy Hobby Sports Card Newsletter. Again, it's going to be one post. It'll be a podcast and a newsletter combined, which, again, I've already been doing. But some of the superfluous stuff, I'm probably going to be more irregular with that like the cards that make us happy posts or the, you know, what I bought and why post the WIBA posts, stuff like that, that's probably going to be taking a second back seat. So what that the problem with that is is I do have some paid subscribers over there. I do plan to make sure you're taken care of. There will be other things that I'm going to be releasing soon and quickly because I didn't know I had to hurry and do it before, but now I'm going to be doing this. So I have some apps, some tools for sports car collecting, especially those getting back into the hobby that I'll be posting over there. Those will be for paid subscribers only. So you'll see that now a little bit more where I'm going to be changing some of it so that it's for paid subscribers only. The most of the main, you know, the podcast and the newsletter post together is still going to be for free subscribers, everybody. But I do want to give more value to the ones who have already been paying those who have paid for the entire year. I want to make sure that they're taken care of with some stuff, including Happy Hobby Buddy break opportunities. We're still planning to do that. So that allows them to get at cost into these breaks. We just posted one yesterday, the 2026 Top Series 2 Hobby Box. So that's going to continue. I don't foresee me stopping that immediately, but there will be fewer videos now. Future of my card collection that's gonna be a little different. I immediately is like, you know what? I'm. I've got too much. I've got too much stuff. I don't like the fact that I have all this stuff because again, now we're talking about security. I'm getting rid of a lot of this stuff because I don't want to have it all here. I've posted enough videos where people know that I have good cards, but I don't want to become a target more than I've already become one. So for instance, I sold the Michael Jordan Beam Team 1992 Top Stadium Club Michael Jordan Beam Team card that I had gotten what, 30 years ago and, and sold it for the most I've ever sold a card for. So I was very excited about that. It's so I sold it more for more than what I sold his rookie card for what, five years ago. So I'm super happy about that. So I've been selling a lot of cards. Might do another video here if you're interested in Any of my cards. So I'll post, do another video or something like that maybe. But something about the Jordan card is I sold it and then immediately after that another one sold for a higher amount. I was like, oh, I should have held out because I did a best offer. So now I thought about it. It's a win. I definitely made way more than I ever paid for. I think I paid, I want to say I paid 150 bucks for it. Maybe 20 early 2000s. Actually it was a gift from my then wife for 150 bucks. She bought it for me so I made out. Thanks ex wife. I'm selling some of my Shohei Otani cards. I'm selling a, a lot of different stuff so keep on lookout for that. I still, I do all my own research and posting and editing and stuff. So I'm going to be trying to condense that so it's less time involved there. More apps, more tools for the paid subscriber because those are things I can do and once they're done, they're still valuable even after they've been posted. Does that make sense? Whereas a video, you got, you know, a few days for it to hit and then really people have to search that topic to come across it again. So that's, that's it, man. How to bounce back? I don't know. I don't know how to bounce back. But I'm gonna give it a shot. I will say I'm for the Substack newsletter. I will be asking does anybody want to write, does anybody want to post some stuff on there? Let me know. Shoot me an email. Ghanascards gmail.com that's my happy hobby email now. Ghaniscards gmail.com it was before too, but I also had other personal stuff that email. I'm also going to be doing a rebrand. This channel, which is at David Ganes, going to be changing to be at Happy Hobby Sports Cards. So that'll be the YouTube video brand going forward is Happy Hobby Sports Cards. I want to do a long time ago. But I, I know that when you do that it could affect your, the algorithm and it could affect things pointing to you and stuff. So I was sketchy. I was a little fearful doing that. Well, guess what? I'm kind of starting from zero right now. So now is the time to do it. So I'm gonna go ahead and do that. Listen, I rambled for a bajillion minutes. I appreciate you sticking around, listening to it, watching it, putting up with me. Thank you thank you for wanting the videos to come back. Thank you for wanting me to be back in doing this. I appreciate it. I know a lot of you do it because it's maybe not even just because of me, but. But it's because of the other people in the community that you comment with and you chat with and you now have connections with. I'm good with that. My ego is not big enough. So big that I think that everybody just wants to see this big chubby face. I know that you guys have made connections and that's what I'm proud of. Like that we've built up this community. It's a happy hobby. People are kind to each other here. I know it's coming at some point. I've had commenters that are a little aggressive and idiots and stupid, but it hasn't come to where it's affected the community so much. This is maybe two or three years ago. Somebody made a bad comment. I did a video about the comment to in a response about what he said, man, you want to talk about this guy getting blown up in my video, in the comments about how he's an idiot? Well, he saw that video and got mad that I had replied to him. I think my guess is he was like a 16 year old kid at this point, you know, but at the time I didn't know. It's just a guy that was. But anyways, you learn, you learn. Listen, thank you, thank you. Thanks for being happy. I'm back and thank you for this happy hobby.
Episode summary
<p><strong><em>After two weeks of going dark because a hacker hijacked our YouTube channel and Gmail account, we finally regained control and our brains are clearer because of it!</em></strong></p><p>Well, I’m back.</p><p>Build a better sports card collection on a real-world budget — that’s what this whole Happy Hobby world is about, and for two weeks, I genuinely didn’t know if I’d get to keep doing it.</p><p>If you missed it: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/@davidgonos">my YouTube channel</a> got hacked. Not just the channel — my Gmail too. When those two things go down at once, your entire digital life goes down with them. For a few days, somebody else <em>was</em> me. It took almost two weeks to untangle it.</p><p><em>Here’s the story, what it cost me, and what’s changing going forward for the channel, the podcast, and this newsletter.</em></p><p>How It Happened!</p><p>It was 3:30am on a Friday — June 12th, a date that’s now burned into my brain. I have trouble sleeping sometimes, so I got up, sat down at my computer, and started going through email. There was a message from someone wanting me to join their advertiser network — connect your YouTube, they match you with sponsors, that kind of thing.</p><p>This wasn’t unusual. As the channel grew past 9,000 subscribers, I’d been getting more outreach like this. I’d used legit tools before — VidIQ, Opus Clip — that ask for the same kind of YouTube access. So I Googled the company, found a real-looking website, started signing up, and connected my YouTube.</p><p>Within 60 seconds, I was locked out of everything. Gmail, YouTube, gone. It was instant, and I knew immediately I’d made a mistake.</p><p>Whoever did this didn’t just lock me out — they changed my recovery email, my recovery phone number, everything. Fast, practiced, methodical. </p><p>This wasn’t his first time.</p><p>This wasn’t just a stolen email — it was stolen identity. A police report had to be filed, in case further issues develop with our credit, bank accounts or tax information.</p><p>It was a nightmare!</p><p>What I Lost</p><p>Almost everything tied to that Google account, which I’d had since 2011:</p><p>* 15 years of Gmail and contacts</p><p>* Google Keep — where I kept <strong>100+ video and article ideas</strong>, years of sports card history research, website plans, podcast season plans</p><p>* Google Sheets — every spreadsheet I had (and I love my spreadsheets!)</p><p>* Every account I’d ever signed into with “Continue with Google”</p><p>* The backup codes I’d saved for account recovery — which, ironically, I’d also stored in Google Keep</p><p>That last one still makes me laugh. Write your passwords down somewhere safe that <em>isn’t</em> tied to the account that just got stolen. Use different passwords for different things. I know how obvious that sounds. I learned it the expensive way anyway.</p><p>My YouTube channel got fully shut down a couple of days later for “violations,” which actually turned out to be a small blessing — the hacker could no longer use my channel, and he’d already posted a live stream of an Elon Musk SpaceX video with a sketchy QR code in the corner. If you ever see something like that: don’t scan it. Apparently that’s exactly how this kind of thing spreads further.</p><p>Give Me Back My Channel!</p><p>After days of thinking I was done with sports card content creation (I wasn’t going to start over!), I got some hope via X/Twitter!</p><p>I tweeted <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/teamyoutube">@TeamYouTube</a>, explained what happened, and they walked me through a recovery form — though even finding my own YouTube ID (different from my handle) took digging through old emails I could barely access.</p><p>Our buddy <a target="_blank" href="https://substack.com/profile/206781767-patrick-imhoff">Patrick Imhoff</a> — the VP of the Happy Hobby world, and someone I’d given limited posting access to once while I was traveling — posted a video for me explaining the situation to you all, then deleted his own access afterward so the hacker couldn’t use him as a backdoor. That was a genuinely selfless move and I owe him for it.</p><p>Slowly, things came back. Gmail first, which was the biggest relief because it unlocked Keep and Sheets and everything else. Then, a few days later, YouTube flipped back on — at 11pm on a Friday night, of all times, which meant two videos I’d spent a long time on got auto-posted back-to-back and basically wasted (see The Dandy Dozen Vintage Baseball video below!).</p><p>You can’t plan for everything.</p><p>The Community Made This Bearable</p><p>While all this was happening, <a target="_blank" href="https://substack.com/chat/1332612">I told the Substack readers in the chat</a> what was going on as soon as I could. The response was honestly overwhelming — people reaching out, people sad to see the channel possibly gone for good, people just being kind. </p><p>It felt like writing a eulogy for something that wasn’t dead yet, and that’s a weird feeling. But it also reminded me why this whole thing is worth doing. This is a genuinely good community. People are kind to each other here. That’s not nothing.</p><p><p><strong>This is a genuinely good community. People are kind to each other here. That’s not nothing.</strong></p></p><p>What This Forced Me to Notice</p><p>For the first time since the late ‘90s, I wasn’t creating something every single week. No video, no podcast, no newsletter to get out the door. That’s been my rhythm since I wrote fantasy sports newsletters for my league, fantasy articles for CBS Sports, Sports Illustrated, The Athletic, and now 5-plus years of creating Happy Hobby card-collecting content.</p><p>With that pressure gone for two weeks, I unwound. I read more physical books. I spent more quality time with my wife Shelby. I connected more with my mom, who recently moved in with us. </p><p>It was a rough way to get there, but it was a real reminder that all this content creation — which I love — takes a lot out of the week.</p><p>What’s Changing Going Forward</p><p><em>I’m not starting over, and I’m not stopping. But it’s going to look a little different:</em></p><p>* <strong>Fewer, less-produced videos.</strong> Less of the heavily edited, cards-flying-in style videos, more of me just talking with you — sharing what I’ve learned, rankings, research. The podcast, video, and newsletter are converging into one combined post, which I was already moving toward.</p><p>* <strong>A rebrand.</strong> The YouTube channel is moving from “David Gonos” branding to <strong>Happy Hobby Sports Cards</strong> as the primary identity going forward. I’d wanted to do this for a while but worried about disrupting the algorithm. Well — starting from near zero now, there’s no better time.</p><p>* <strong>More tools for paid subscribers.</strong> I’m leaning into the apps and tools I’ve been building for budget collectors — things that stay valuable long after they’re published, unlike a video that has a short shelf life before people stop searching for it. Paid subscribers will start seeing more of these.</p><p>* <strong>Buddy breaks continue.</strong> We just posted one on the <a target="_blank" href="https://youtu.be/_EUeU6-W8uE?si=uPTB7fS8YLhUfmtV">2026 Topps Series 2 Hobby Box</a>, and that’s not going anywhere.</p><p>* <strong>Selling off some of the collection.</strong> Partly a security decision — I’ve shown enough of what I own on camera, and I don’t want to be more of a target than I already am. (For what it’s worth: I sold my 1992 Stadium Club Michael Jordan Beam Team for the most I’ve ever sold a card for, which softened the blow considerably.) Keep an eye out — more is coming up for sale.</p><p>One Ask From You!</p><p>I’d like to bring in some other voices for the newsletter. If you’ve ever wanted to write something for the Happy Hobby Sports Cards Substack, let me know — email me at <a target="_blank" href="mailto:gonoscards@gmail.com"><strong>gonoscards@gmail.com</strong></a>. Pitch me an idea. Show me you can put some sentences together! Do you already have a Substack about sports cards? Pitch me an idea for an article where we all benefit — you, me and the Happy Hobby readers!</p><p>Finally, Thank You!</p><p>Thank you for sticking around, for the kindness while this was falling apart, and for wanting this thing to come back. It’s not really about me — it’s about the community we’ve built here. I’m just glad I get to keep being part of it.</p><p>I’m back. Thank you, Happy Hobby.</p><p><em>Have you ever been hacked or had something you love hijacked or stolen for a period of time?
