He lost his grocery store… then accidentally found his next chapter. Before Mace Coin and Cards, Carl Sr. owned a grocery store in South Scranton. When a new convenience store opened directly across the street, his business eventually closed. Then, in 1979, an opportunity came to take over a local shop dealing in coins, baseball cards and military collectibles. There was only one problem: Carl knew coins—but admits he knew practically nothing about baseball cards or stamps. He entered the business “cold.” The early years weren’t easy, but then the sports card hobby exploded in the 1980s. By 1984, Carl remembers students packing the shop after school during the excitement surrounding cards like the Don Mattingly rookie. What started as an unfamiliar business became a shop that would survive generations of collectors.
