Not many people know this, but the Topps Wayne Gretzky rookie card was actually issued prior to the OPC version, which came out on January 1, 1980. The Topps set was issued in 1979. Not only that but as far as autographed versions of the Topps and OPC Gretzky rookie card go, there are almost twice as many OPC’s on the PSA Pop report with 453 OPC versus only 230 Topps. For several years now I’ve felt that the Topps version had more potential relative to the OPC version because it seems like the public thinks the OPC version is rarer. But when you look at a the graded populations, a different story emerges. Pursuant to the PSA Population Report, the total PSA submissions of the non-autographed OPC version is currently 15,813, while the Topps version sits at 12,456, or 78.8% of the OPC. Sure there may be more raw Topps copies out there, but the this gap has only been growing with that ratio shrinking. So tell me, which would you rather have here in 2026? POP off 😆 below ⬇️ @heritageauctions
