I don’t necessarily prioritize the best card in front of me. I prioritize the relationship behind it. Meaning, if someone I’ve done repeat business with has a lot available: bricks, mids, raw, sealed, whatever… and someone else has a grail, but I don’t know them, the vibe is off and there’s no history there… and in both cases I can make a couple dollars... I’m choosing the first deal every day of the week. That’s probably a big reason I’m able to run a card business with no shop, almost no travel, and maybe 5–6 shows a year. And I still remember this day. I went into this show thinking it might be my last one. Damn near every card has a Card Ladder valuation. Every box has a DealerNet listing. Everyone has the same comps. If we’re competing on 1 point, then what is the point ? Then someone I’d done business with before specifically sought me out to make another deal. And something clicked. In a hobby where almost everything has been commoditized, you have to double down on the things that can’t be commoditized.
