The Dyckman Oval Project: A Rare 1946 Dominican Baseball Book

This pickup is far more than just another addition to my collection. It's the latest chapter in what I'm calling The Dyckman Oval Project, a long-term effort to preserve the history of the Dominican players who suited up for the New York Cubans while they played at Dyckman Oval in New York City. In this video, I share an incredibly rare book published in the Dominican Republic in 1946 that pays tribute to the greatest Dominican baseball players up to that point in history. Even more remarkable, it features three of the four Dominican players who played for the New York Cubans during the Dyckman Oval era: Tetelo Vargas, Horacio "Rabbit" Martinez, and Pedro San. For me, this book represents much more than its rarity. It's a window into a forgotten chapter of baseball history and an important piece in telling the stories of players who helped shape the game long before they received the recognition they deserved. Along the way, I'll also discuss why Horacio "Rabbit" Martinez has become one of the most fascinating figures in my collection. From his playing career to his work as a scout who helped bring legends like Juan Marichal and the Alou brothers to professional baseball, his legacy deserves to be remembered. I hope you'll join me as we continue building The Dyckman Oval Project one piece of history at a time.
