Fanatics Fest vs The National!! Mike & Chris Sewall Discuss!

What's going on? Nothing. It's been a fairly quiet week for the most part, but there is some, some fanatics fest stuff going on. What's going on with you? No, yeah, it's always quiet right before we record and then, and then there's like tons of cool exciting news right before Teapot jumps on and then he gets more views and then you make fun of me for that. Yeah, the Teapot video, actually the last one, we got over 10,000 views because it had the CGC. There was all those CGC things that happened that week. Oh really? So yeah, 10,000 views on YouTube and closing in on a thousand listens on podcast. Both of which are far and away. Well, I guess the podcast isn't a far and away record, but the video is a far and away record for our channel, our fledgling sports card clubhouse channel. But yours also do very, very well. Yeah, that's cool. I would say congrats to Teapot. I'm not bitter about that at all. Sure, I'll tell him. I promise you he's not texting me going haha. So, yeah, how. How are things with, with the Sewell sports car business? You seem to be going gangbusters. It's great. Yeah, I'm in, I'm in my office. Yeah, I haven't shown that off yet, but yeah, it's pretty, it's pretty cool. Things. Things are, things are going really, really well. How's. How's your Weekend of Mike? Weekend of Mike has started. I made. So I made a few. I don't know, a month or two ago I told Craig about the dip that I made. It's been years since I last made it. Yeah, I saw that episode. Yeah. And I shared the recipe. Well, I made that this morning and I had a bowl of it. So we're recording this on Friday afternoon. I already had a bowl of it with some Tostitos chips and it's. It's delicious. I have some Ben and Jerry's. I'm going to order pizza in and I'm going to watch some horror movies tonight. Amazing. And this is. Yeah, I mean it's amazing. And then all day tomorrow, probably more of the same. So while people are watching this Saturday morning or listening to it on podcast. It's just going to be, you know, I'll just be sitting in my recliner in the dark watching horror movies. Amazing. So I, I. You just told me right before we started recording, which I had wrong. I thought you were a big like B movie horror movie guy. Like, like leprechaun. No, but apparently you like the big budget horrors. Well, I like the mainstream horrors. Like Obsession, which just came out a couple months ago, I think it was in May. It only had a budget of $750,000, but it's made 450 million at the box office. And it's one of the best, not only horror movies I've ever seen, but best movies at all that I've ever seen. Obsession. Okay, do you focus on modern or like, you go classic with like Fangoria came out like a couple years ago with a list of the 100 greatest horror movies of all time. And I'm trying to go through that. Some of them are painful, but I'm trying to watch all hundred of them and because they're old, they're painful because they're like from the 50s. Yeah, yeah, exactly. They're. Some of them are awful. Yeah. Okay. But I've also discovered, like, I watched what's, what's the movie with Sissy spacek from the 1960s. Rosemary's Baby. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was amazing. I did not. I, I thought, this is a 60 year old movie. It's gonna be terrible. It was so good. So good. Nice. Okay. Yeah. Blair Wish on there. Blair Witches on there. I watched that, I don't know, a month or so ago again, it'd been a while since I watched it. What'd you think of that? I like it a lot. So I was a filmmaker. I was trying to be a filmmaker when that came out. Yeah. And so much respect for that idea because that was, I don't know, I don't know if that like originated the found footage idea, but it definitely did in the sort of the US Main mainstream idea. It was the first, first one there and it was like a movie made for like 20 grand that made like $100 million of the box. It was, it was the most successful movie of all time by, by that metric. Yeah. When it came out. I don't know if it still is, but yeah, I think Obsession is close now because it's similar sort of concept made for very, very little money. $750,000. Legends found footage too. No, no, but in terms of the most successful movie of all time, of course you have to consider Inflation and things like that. But yeah, yeah, so and then you have back rooms, which is also these. A lot of YouTube directors now. So I'm sure that's something that you can respect where these guys just built these shorts on YouTube and then they were wildly popular backrooms, got like 100 million views on YouTube and it was a nine minute video or something. And then major studios came calling and said, we want to give you money. You know, when I was a filmmaker, there was nothing that you couldn't do any of this. Like you had to, you had to raise a million dollars just to like try to like make a short or something. Because today you can, you can, you know, you can make a film on your iPhone. Yeah, yep, absolutely. That looks decent. But yeah, I wish that existed. So let's talk sports cards. Oh yeah, weird, weird concept. I know this week is I have some beef regarding you in sports cards. So on one of your recent videos you're talking about a Pele card, right? Yeah. And you say so I'm not quite sure how to pronounce it, but I definitely pronounce it better than Chris Sewell pronounced it Aleph. Abolaguet is what he said. No, no, it's Alphabet. But yeah, I don't think I said it quite that way. No, I think it was exactly like that. I don't think so. Well, it's good to know you're watching. I'll be nicer next time. Yeah. So Fanatics Fest is this week. Have you ever been to a Fanatics fest? I have not. No. Have you? I have not. The national is in two weeks. Are you just announced on professor sports cards you're not going to the national, correct? Yeah, I'm backing out of the National. Backing out. Big bummer. Big bummer. Yeah. Yeah. Well, tell a little why first of all. So, yeah, it's basically just too much going on for me. I had, I didn't have the greatest national last year. It just felt, it felt too big. It felt bigger than I wanted it to be, which it's not for me, obviously, but it just felt too big. And I of course love like seeing everybody, but that was sort of the only thing, thing I enjoyed. I didn't buy anything. I got, I got. I was walking around the show, the floor looking at cards and I got tired real quick because it was so big and so crowded. So it's not, it's not really something I super look forward to other than getting to see people. But I got so many things going on that it's Just sort of the thing to cut. Business is booming. Business is booming. Yeah, it's good. It's like all good stuff. Yeah. It's not like. Like my sister got sick or something. Yeah. Good problem to have. Good problem. Yeah. But I know you're looking forward to it, right? I am. I'm very excited, as we say here in the Northeast. I'm wicked excited. Wicked excited. And so. And, and by the way, Danny Black, who's my. My coo, He. He also is not going to the national for similar reasons, but he is at the Fanatics Fest right now. Wow. Yeah. So he knew I was going to the national and not going to Fanatics Fest and he chose Fanatics Fest. That was the reason. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I. I always set aside two lunches. One for you, one for Danny. I know. I'm sorry, man. You gotta. You gotta drive down here now. I will someday. Okay, so Fanatics Fest is this week. I haven't been to one. You haven't been to one. But it's. It's a fan experience. And there's a lot of talk on Twitter where, you know, on Twitter people like to say very, very. In very forceful way their opinions as if they're facts. And the big thing that people are saying right now, including Darren Revelle, is that Fanatics Fest is so big and so amazing that the national will cease to exist. What do you think about that? Why would. Why would that. Why would it be. If it was the biggest show of all time, why would. Why would the national cease to exist? How are those two things related exactly? Darren Ravel either, I think this morning said that Fanatics Fest this year has 10 times the number of people that the national gets and The national gets 125000 people. So Darren Revelle's saying that Fanatics Fest has over a million people there, which last year they had about 125 000. And so they're 10 Xing their own show in a year. Seems unlikely, doesn't it? I don't know. But no, that does not seem likely. I've never been a Fanatics Fest, so I can't really speak to it. But I do think it's bigger than the net. It's a different thing though. It's not like a sports card. Yes. Specific show. It's a very different experience. If you're just metric is who attracts more people. Yeah, it's Fanatics. Fits is bigger, but that's not. Those aren't. They're not related. It's like saying The NFL is so big that Major League Baseball is going to be gone in 10 years. Those two things aren't related to. Yeah, yeah, that's a good point. Or the NFL so big that college football will cease to exist. Sure. Yeah. Right. Wow. That doesn't. They probably like grow each other and, and I would almost say it's the opposite. Right. I think the national sold out of all five day passes a month or two weeks ago at least. Yep. And Fanatics Fest was still giving out coupons two days ago to get people to go. Oh really? I'm not saying. Yeah, I'm not saying Fanatics Fest won't be packed. I know it is. I've seen posts from very like Neo is talking about how busy it is compared to last year. I'm sure it's jam packed but it's also not a card show. It's a. Right, it's an experience type of thing where you go and you can meet athletes and you can watch them compete. You can compete against athletes and things. And the national is a card show. You're going up and you're, you're looking at cards everywhere and you see there's a museum basically and they're very, very different things. And like Ivan the breaks on Twitter who's his good account said they can both exist and they will continue to both exist. They're. One of them isn't going to eliminate the other and I think that's the more accurate take here. Yeah, absolutely. I mean the national is. Has other things going on but like you said, it's a card show first. You go there and you're looking at. Yeah, your card showers. The Fanatics is the, is the opposite. It's not a card show first but there's card, there's card show aspect there. But yeah, very different and they don't compete. I mean unless fanatics like chose to buy out the national just to kill the competition or something. But why would they do that? Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what would happen if they ended up on the same weekend. I mean why would they do that? I guess unless, unless like one had a reason to try to eliminate the other. But it doesn't make. It doesn't. Yeah, yeah. No, I don't get that. That idea. Yeah. And it seems like Fanatics would have a vested interest in the national since they make a lot of money there. They, they have breakers. They have. Sure. There's a lot of Fanatics interest at the National. Yeah, absolutely. So Fanatics Fest and you and I have Talked about this before in our. How we're both introverts. And I think that Fanatics Fest appeals to younger people and families, and the national appeals to kind of older people like us. I'm. I look at the. I look at Fanatics Festival and I see videos and it looks like a blast for me 20 years ago, 25 years ago. But I don't need that constant dopamine hit that you get at the National. I want. I want a more relaxed environment. Not to say the national is relaxed, of course, but I can walk around and just look at cards and not pay attention to all the stuff that I don't need to pay attention to. Whereas at Fanatics Fest, it looks like that is hammered on you the entire time. Yeah, no, that's a great way to put it. I mean, we're. We're in our mid-30s, we're in our mid-40s, and. Yeah, exactly. 20 years ago, fanatics Fest would have been an absolute dream. Or maybe more like. Yeah, 25 years ago for me, that would have been like, insane. Walking around seeing athletes, that's something you, you know, you didn't get to. You could go to a ball game and get a. See them, but never like in an environment like that. So that's actually pretty cool. I kind of wish I could have experienced that a kid, but today I wouldn't really care. Yeah. And today it's definitely more of a new nuisance than. Than something I look for I would look forward to. It's part of the reason the national is turning me off a little bit, because they're. I agree they're targeted towards. More towards old folks like us, but they're also sort of starting to gear younger. And I don't think. I don't think we're the target audience anymore. Yeah, there is a Breakers Pavilion. Yeah, for sure. And I just completely avoid that. Yeah. But there's also. I. I really enjoy going through the. What is. It's like the industry portion. Like, I want to go to Heritage, and there I want to go to see what all these major auction houses have displayed. That's what I mean when I say a museum. CGC has some amazing cards. I want to see. Yeah, there's just a lot of really cool stuff in the. I don't know. What is that area called? The. The. That word that I can't think of. Both frozen. You know, national also has. I'm sorry, not the National. Fanatics Fest also has other celebrities that aren't even athletes, like Jason Sudeikis of Ted Lasso was there today and Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live and he has a. A late night show, I think, still maybe. Yeah. And so there's a lot of that as well, which is really interesting. And you know that the athletes have been paid to be there. Was Jason Sudeikis paid to be there? I don't know. Saying. I wonder. I don't know. By the way, we. It's closer. I mean, you. You're not that far from New York, right? Yeah, it's about a five and a half hour drive for me. That's a lot shorter. A lot closer than Chicago. It's much closer. Chicago is, I don't know, 17 hour drive. I fly there in two hours and. But you used to be a professional. Trying to be a professional runner. So how far of a run is it? I wouldn't say I was trying to be a professional runner. I was trying to be a competitive runner in Maine, which. That is a lot less exciting competitive trail runner. And trail running is much. There's a much smaller crowd of trail runners than roadrunners. Roadrunners are. Are insanely fit and skinny and they're very careful with what they eat. Trail runners are a little. What's the word? Not. Not huskier. But it's a. It's a more challenging discipline than road running where there's. Yeah. There's running up harder hills, jumping over rocks and roots and all kinds of things. And it takes not to say that trail running is harder than road running. I would never say that. Please don't hate me in my comments. It just takes a different skill set and there's fewer people who do it. And so. And Maine is much smaller, so I could have been a competitive trail runner in Maine. So there are a bunch of qualifiers there that get before professional running. I could put that in a quote. I could have been. I could have been. I could have been a competitive trail runner in Maine. Congrats. Could have been a contender. Back to. Yeah. Okay, so you. So even though it's a lot closer, you're not going to the. Nope, I am not going. I would probably go someday, but they're both in the same month. Yeah. And I. I love going to the national and getting lunch with you. And that's the only reason I go. Really. But also the. The YouTube get together, which CIA is putting on. Yeah. Which I'm really looking forward to. Mike Moynihan started that and it's blown up. And, you know, it's just. I like walking the floor. I like people Say there are no deals at the National. I find amazing deals every year at the National. Oh, really? I was. I have not found them recently. You mean when you say amazing deals, like solid cards for 90% of comps or what do you mean by. Yeah, so last year. My most memorable pickup last year is the Steph Curry 2009 tops rookie card. Yeah. And it was PSA 8. Leighton Sheldon of Just Collect was selling it and he had it priced at $880. And I pulled up card ladder right there in front of him and said, hey, Recent comps are 8 to 820. Would you do 800? And he said, yeah. And that card now is selling for $2500. But you. But at the time you bought it for comps. Yeah, it was right at comps. But most people say you can't even get anything for comps. Oh, no, I would say you can get stuff for comps, I guess, but you can get stuff for comps anywhere. No, I guess not. Yeah, I guess. Okay, so you. You. You collect a lot of rookie autos from the 80s. Are you trying to get every hall of Famer type thing? I have four. I'm missing of every hall of Famer from the 80s. Yep. So I'm missing Tim Reigns, Tony Gwynn, Tim Rains, which is easy. Greg Maddox, which is easy. And then Tony Gwynn and Kirby Puckett. And the Kirby Pucket. I won't get in the 84 flir. Okay. $10,000 or something crazy. But the 85 tops, I could settle for 85 tops, which is his first tops card. Not necessarily his true rookie, but you can get that for under a thousand. Just not been into card shows much lately. Chantilly, which is my, my big local, has basically shut down. I don't know if people know that. They, they. Their last show I think was like almost a year ago now. The building that they run it in was bought by an Ikea and IKEA just turned it into an Ikea. So there's no building. They've been looking for a building for a while. They still haven't found one. So that show's been off. I might go to Lake Philly show for a day, but yeah, that's sort of it. There's a local show and the local shows. A couple local shows I go to, but they're small one day shows. I actually, actually kind of enjoy those more now. Yeah. I don't decorate stuff very much. My. Yeah, I'm very, very boring. I'll probably bring in some, like, stuff for my son, put them up there. I've always been kind of the same way. Like my dorm room people would always come and make fun of me in college because I didn't really have anything on my walls. Yeah. And I put things up here because I'm on video, but it's just not something I'm good at or really care about. Yeah. Yeah. I would have loved to see Mike Junk Wax hero dorm room. Is there like a picture of a runner, of a trail runner? I wasn't a runner. Well, I ran on the cross country team for a little while in college, but it wasn't. I was a basketball player and tennis player, so those were the two things that were very important to me. I played basketball every day, like three hours a day. I played tennis a few times a week. Those were the. The really important things to me. And if I had put things up on my wall, it probably would have been, well, plus the Red Sox. I Watched every Red Sox game for. I don't think I missed a game for like five or six straight years around the Orioles. Same with me for the Orioles. Yeah. Yeah. And then probably even more than that, seven or eight years where I just didn't miss anything. In the 90s, 90s, right up until 2004. Oh, they weren't very. Oh, up until 2004. I was gonna say in the 90s, they weren't very good. Right. In the late 90s, late 90s, they were. They got Pedro. Oh, number 99. They beat the Indians in that amazing game. Five Pedro pitched. Boy, this is coming off memory. 27 year memory. Pedro came in in relief and pitched like seven shadow innings. Seven hitless innings. Maybe I'm gonna get hate from my Red Sox fan friends here. I was big. For some reason, I'm remembering the Red Sox being bad. Maybe it's more like the early 90s they were kind of weak. Or the mid-90s. Oh, yeah, they were terrible until like 97. And they got paid. Yeah, yeah, they had. Yeah, the. The vaunted Troy o' Leary lineup. What's the Troy o' Leary lineup? That. That was like one of their best hitters in the late 90s. I couldn't even tell you what year his rookie is, but. But when you have Pedro as a pitcher, you can. You can do pretty well. And they. That in that 99 season, was the year that Pedro struck out five out of six National League future Hall of Fame sluggers to start off the All Star Game. Oh, cool. Yeah, Ted Williams was there. Yeah, Ted Williams was. Was one of the hitters. Yes. Okay. It's because the. The 90s Orioles were actually stacked, but they just never. They never got over the hump. The Al was tough. The Indians were amazing in the 90s. Yeah. Yeah. And the Yankees, obviously, in the late 90s became studly. I don't remember that. No. Yeah, me neither, actually. Maybe I'd get two in the same trip. That would be cool. There you go. And in two years, I go to Detroit for the national 20 and 28, right? When they go to Detroit. Yeah, yeah. And you'll go to a game then, so. Yeah, if they have a game, I'll be there for sure. Nice. Nice. Yeah. All right, Chris. I think Moynihan. Moynihan's like 30 of 32 parks he's been to, so. Yeah, I don't. I'm not aiming to go to every park. It's not like a. A goal, but I would love to. Yeah. Yeah. There are some in places where I don't have any interest in ever going, like Kansas. No offense to Kansas viewers. That was just the first state that popped into my head. St. Louis. Okay. Yeah. But if I were there, like, I go. I travel occasionally for work. And So I. In 2019, actually, I went to San Francisco for work for a big tech conference, and it was during the Western Conference finals of the NBA, and it was. Jeez, 2019 Western Conference finals, it was obviously Steph Curry and the warriors, but I don't remember who they were playing.
