Every Sun & Moon Set Ranked WORST to BEST | Pack Fresh Podcast Ep. 29

Is sun and Moon the best era in Pokemon history or is it just going to get forgotten in the sands of time? That's what we're going to talk about today here on the Pack Fresh podcast where we talk about all things Pokemon TCG and give you a little peek behind the curtain what it's like to be a seller in this crazy hobby. But today we're not going to really talk about selling too much. We're going to be talking about sun and Moon and specifically the era of sun and Moon sets. And we're going to rank from worst to best. And we don't even know what each other have for our rankings. So this should be a lot of fun. Yeah, we've done this with Scarlet and Violet and then Sword and Shield. Check those episodes out if you get a chance. Taking it back one more era. Sun and Moon. You know, sun and Moon's kind of the era where Pokemon kind of grew up a little bit. This is where you kind of notice the like vintage. You kind of see like a bigger change right in this era. Yeah, it's got those old school mechanics and they traded them in for kind of the like massive high end hit chases that we know and like see in all the sets today. Yeah, this is the first time we really got like alternate arts. I mean there's like some nice arts and stuff in XY era, but like truly like alternate artworks and, and like really, really highly illustrated things. Sun and Moon is really the first place where we saw that. Yeah, that the alt arts, the full art trainer hype, the shiny vault, like there's a lot of things this era kind of rainbows. This is, it's kind of the era that changed a lot in the way that Pokemon printed, the way they designed the products. You know, there's kind of a lot going on and I mean you really had a lot of different issues. I mean as they're scaling and doing these new things, I mean you had, you know, factory edge nightmare issues in the printing, you know, and then all the way from the lows of that going into the thousands of dollar grails that are highly sought after today, still some of the biggest cards like in the hobby in modern Ish. Are we calling sun and Moon modern still? It's kind of like a debate. I feel a lot of people always have. Where do you draw the line in the sand? I don't know. I'm old enough that I want to call it modern Ish. Really. I, I feel like midair. I cut, I feel like I cut the line now at Sword and Shield feel like we're two. We're two full eras removed and we're almost probably done with Mega Evolution. We start a new one, then we call it Post Mid Era. Yeah. Or like mid Modern. I don't know, pre, like pre modern era. Like Sun Moon's not easy to find, right? Like, yeah, yeah. No, you're definitely not going and finding it on the shelves. Definitely feeling older, right? It's feeling more special, more like. All the booster boxes are pretty much crazy expensive and except for a few. Maybe that's where we start our list. Let's do it. So worst to best, what'd you pick first? My last place set is Crimson Invasion. It. It just doesn't. It doesn't move the needle for me really at all. Like all sets, there's always going to be a couple of nice cards. There's a couple of cool trainers. I think that's kind of a. A theme throughout sun and Moon. Pretty much every set has some really nice trainer cards, but there's just nothing really in here. I mean, the Gyarados is probably the best. The best card here, but it's a tough one. It's a really tough one. You know, I, I could agree with that, but I put Detective Pikachu last. Really, Just because, I mean, it's a fun set to rip. It's not really like the art that you're looking for. It's all like live action movie cards. It's a very small set, you know, fun to rip. Nothing really going on for me. I just. That was kind of the last. The starting point for me of this era would be Detective Pikachu. Okay. I mean, I have, I have a few things to say about that, but I'll hold my tongue on until. Until we get there. So however, after that, going into second to last place, I also have Crimson Invasion at the bottom. You got the Pikachu Common, the Gengar Rare, the Gyarados gx. I mean, that's like the entire set in a nutshell. And do you want any of that? Are you chasing that? I don't know. It's not really something you're. You're really looking for, right? Yeah. Yeah. And this is going to kind of be a theme, I think, for these few, first few sets. Yeah, they're not incredible. My next set on this list is going to be Guardians Rising. Guardians Rising is a, you know, it, it. It's a fine set. I think it's definitely a step up from Crimson Invasion. You still have a sylveon in here. Rainbow Sylveon Metagross. I'm kind of an Incineroar fan personally. I know a lot of people have some issues with incineroar, but there's. There's some decent art throughout here. There's like a. Like a Rayquaza. Common or Rare. That's like a pretty nice card. I think that's like the. The hidden piece of sun and moon that I noticed looking through all these. There's a. Like some really nice commons. They give me like kind of old school, not quite like E reader status, but like maybe some like ex era kind of vibes out of the commons. There's a lot of really cool illustrations out here and it is nice, but still not moving the needle a ton for me. My third from the bottom set is Guardians Rising. Okay. We're really just separated by Detective Pikachu. Also this is the first comparison list where we've had the last place set differ from each other. That's true. That is interesting. And I honestly feel like you said a lot of these sets are going to have a similar theme. A lot of this is just the same style artwork, couple Pokemon. It doesn't really. There's not much you're. You're really doing that you're looking for out of the. Of a. A portion of this era. Yeah. So it's. It's really like a pick. Your. What? Whatever Pokemon you really. You like. Yeah. Right. That's your set, right? Did they get a full art? I. You know, you're going to put that a little bit higher and Sylveon's one of my favorite Eeveelutions. The pink background Sylveon in Guardians Rising. It's one of my more favorite sets it. Or one of my more favorite Sylveon cards. Yeah, that one almost pushed it up a little bit for me, but the set just didn't have enough to carry it to. To really move it up for me. Yeah, I hear you. I mean, same story, right? The next one for me is Forbidden Light. You got Greninja. I really like Yveltal, so that kind of moved it up just like a little bit more for me. Yveltal Xerneas. I was a big fan of xy, so like, you know, having those guys in there, there's some cool stuff in here. But again, it's just you could really interchange all these and. And I really probably wouldn't. I wouldn't know this too much. Right. Like it's. They're fine. Right. Yeah, I agree. Fine. Fine's a good word. It's fine. It's fine. Just fine. What about. What's your set? Fourth from the bottom. So my next one is indeed Detective Pikachu. I have a really soft spot for Detective Pikachu. I love the movie. I think it's awesome. I'm shocked that we don't have a live action Pokemon universe at this point after that movie. But I digress. The cards are cool. I think they're fun. I'm kind of a sucker for, like, promo cards, and there's some really cool promos. But I think the thing that makes this set so special to me and why I put it a little bit higher than these others, the sealed products of Detective Pikachu are awesome. The packaging that they made for these things with, like, the case files and stuff like that are really cool. It's a very, very fun experience opening these things. And they really never did anything else like this again. So I really appreciate that. I think it's cool that they did that for. For Detective Pikachu and then. And then, you know, movie tie in. So it's fun. I mean, the cards are. They're whatever, right? I mean, I like the movie, so I. I do enjoy the cards, but I really like the Detective Pikachu cards themselves. Like, the ones of Pikachu, I think are actually awesome. But. Yeah. Yeah, it is. I mean. Yeah. And obviously, like, movie photos and it's cool. It's cool set. I do agree with you on the. The way they kind of went outside the box on, like, the case files and stuff. It is pretty sick to, like. Yeah. Have something that's not the same cookie cutter products over and over and over and over. Right. So Detective Pikachu, fourth from the bottom for you. Mine is Forbidden Light. It's similar to what you're saying. I mean, you got the Palkia Dialga Greninja. There's just nothing outside of in that set than, like, the Arceus that I'm like, a big fan of, the artwork that I'd be chasing that I, you know, the Arceus Prism Star card is my favorite in the set. And it's. I love prisms. I. They're so cool. We're gonna be talking a lot about prisms here in a minute. That's another one forbidden. If it just had a little bit more could have got pushed up the list. Three, four more cards. But there's just. There's nothing outside of that that I'm really chasing, that I'm going after Yeah. I think, I think sun and Moon kind of struggled at the beginning here because it was trying to basically just emulate what they did with X Y. But then they're just. It's just missing something. I think GXs are cool. Right. I think GXs are much better than V's and the new exs. Right. For our like common kind of hits. Right. I think the GXs are nice, but the full arts I think are just like lacking just a little bit compared to what we got in xy. And then the rainbows are amazing in person for sure. I think they look fantastic for sun and Moon, but there's just. They're just all missing something. Right. There's not like that like oomph thing that you're like, oh yeah, that is a chase that I am looking for. Right? Yeah. No, yeah. I I 100 like the rainbows are just really nothing in the set and, and the full arts are just like you're to your point. They're more plain than just the regular GX's in the set. Yeah. So it's like in person with the texture and everything. They definitely help. And some of them are, you know, some of them I'm not as big of a fan of. Some of them actually do look really nice. But if the regular GX is would have had some sort of texture, like those cards would be much more highly sought after than the. The full arts in the back half of the bind. I should say too. This is kind of just like a. Through sun and Moon in general. And maybe this is a bigger conversation for another episode, but the hollow pattern that they chose for sun and Moon is phenomenal. It's probably my favorite holo pattern outside of like maybe legendary collection. Right. Like that's like. That's so like its own thing but just this like very like artsy, almost like whooshing of the holo pattern that they have throughout all of sun and Moon era I think is just fantastic. I like the black and white like the, the stripes and stuff. But there's just so much character in the sun and Moon and every card is a little bit different because of it. I think it's. It's awesome. Yeah. And they. The texture on some of the high end cards that we'll get into really good. Also just comes out so nice in this. The way they printed them is really, really good. Great. After Forbidden Light for me, I have sun and Moon base. It's. I mean it's the same thing. We're just going to keep Going over this, there's Umbreon, Espeon, you know, and then you have the Lily. It's. You know, I like the side profile. Umbreon. It's a cool art. It's. It's probably the most standout card to me in this set. But just not enough to. To push it to the next. To the next level for me to keep moving it up the list. Yeah. I mean I will talk about it here in a very shortly for me with that set. But my set right there in that slot is going to be Dragon Majesty. I think these dragon themed sets in general just. They always fall short. They should be so good. Right. Like in theory it's like, oh, we're gonna do Dragon set. That's incredible. Of course, like that's gonna be amazing. Yeah. And then it's just like you look at the set list. There's. There's not that much there. Right? There's not that much. But to my point earlier, this set has some of the best looking commons in like the era. The whole Charmander line. The Charmander with the leaf over his head. Phenomenal card. Charizard. That's just like a hollow rare in this. It's awesome. The Torchic line's great. And then you have a Victini Prism card. And I love the prisms I, you know, we talked about a little bit earlier. The prisms are freaking sweet. And that card alone bumped this set up my list. And then you have some cool stuff. Salamance, Kyum, Dragonite. Right. Those rainbows. And then you have a gold card, the Ultra Nerd. There's some decent stuff. Overall. We're still kind of in that. That area. Right. Where none of these sets are really all that special. So that's where I have that. You know, I would agree with that. And that's actually what I have next on my list. So we. And then my next one was sun and Moon Base. So we just basically flip flopped those sun and Moon Base. For me, I'm a number and guy. Right. The Umbreon's awesome. The. The lily's a great lily. I think it's a decent set. As a base set. I think it does a pretty good job of having some nice cards. I think the Umbreon GX especially is a really nice one. Like a basic one, you know. And then you got Espeon 2. Espeon and Umbreon. Pretty hard to go wrong with those two. And you know, a lot of what you said. Dragon Majesty Reshiram would probably be the only Other call out I would have that you didn't mention. It's with the red background. I. I like that card a lot. It's the same stuff. Victinny Prism. Great card. Not a huge fan of any of the other GX cards in there. Small set again. And just like you said, when I saw it, and I'm like, oh, a dragon set. And I started looking through it and I'm like, what the heck is that? This isn't what I want for my dragon set. I want the most fierce dragons. You know, like, yeah, what are we doing here? And especially at this era. We'll talk about it a little bit more. But, like, there was a dragon that was very popular to chase. And I feel like, you know, they kind of just. This. This set could have been one of the best. We talk about, you know, subset, how they do them now. Could have been a banger, but put it there on the list. Out of the way. We're moving on to the next one. And the next one that I have is Burning Shadows. Maybe a hot take. Put it this early. Not sure. We'll see outside of the Rainbow Charizard. I just. I'm not really feeling anything in there. You know, you got the Gardevoir, the Darkrai. It's just. Nothing was really. Nothing really, you know, made it happen to, like, push it up for me. And it's. It did have a lot of print issues that I think the only reason that. That crazy print issues. The edges. Yeah. I mean. And honestly with this. This is probably one of the only rainbow cards in the era that I'll talk about. Like, because they don't have it as a regular card. It's only rainbow. Right? You're chasing that. The regular was a promo, actually. Yeah. Which you couldn't get from the set. So you get the rainbow card here. You also mentioned, and I didn't bring this up, was the gold card. But I'm not a big fan of really any of the gold cards in this era either. They don't really. The way they design them. It's just. It's not that great. Like, doesn't look that great. Nothing that I'm really chasing. I'm not like, my goodness. You have the sun and Moon gold cards. Like, put them next to the rainbow cards. I mean, it's fair. I did not. You did not have that. I had the Celestial Storm. Celestial Storm. We're starting to kind of creep into sets that are actually pretty. Pretty solid here. Right? Like, that first tier of sets, you know, that weren't really moving the needle. We've kind of passed that at this point. Celestial Storm. Solid set. Rayquaza, right? It's hard to go wrong when you've got a Rayquaza in there. I think the Rayquaza full art is really cool. I think the illustration that they did of it is really nice. And then the normal GX of Rayquaza in this set is banging. It is really, really cool. And then you got some really nice prisms as well. Jirachi Prism. Ladias Ladios. Awesome, awesome prisms. And then some good trainers as well. Lycia is a huge, huge card. There's some other really cool ones as well, but it's a decent set. We're kind of getting into that. Like. Yeah, I think I could see myself ripping this. Yeah. Yeah. It'll definitely take a sharp peak in interest here. Coming up. That was the start of our top 10. And so getting into the ninth best set in the era. I have Celestial Storm as well. Put it just a little bit above, just because we did start seeing a little bit more out of the sets in this. There's a little bit more. You got the three prisms. Great. The three. Kind of a decent setup of Pokemon with the Blaziken requires and the Articuno on the gxs. You know, that's why I feel like some people might think it's a hot take with the Burning Shadows because you got the Zard Chase. But really, I just think there's more to go after in this set. You know, if you're only a Charizard collector, that makes sense. But if you're looking for, you know, a bigger set with a little bit more to look for, a little bit better selection of cards. I feel like Celestial Storm just kind of takes over a little bit there. From there, I go Thunder Lost Thunder is a set that I really didn't give a whole lot of respect to until I started ripping it on stream a little bit more. It has some really, really, really nice arts. Just. Just the commons, even really awesome cards. And then you have. The Celib prism is phenomenal. It is a great, great card. And then you got some really, really awesome chase cards in this Lugia. Right? Like Lugia. If he's. If. If you have a Lugia card in a set, it's already going up the list for me. Right? Like, Lugie is awesome. And then you got. I think our first Mimikyu chase is in this set, right? The Mimikyu full art with a pink background is. That's awesome. You got Tyranitar in this as well. Some great trainers. The Professor Elm card with all the starters is. Is sick too. It's a. It's a nice set. Suicune too. I mean, it's like you kind of look more and more into Lost Thunder and you're like, this is. This is nice. This is pretty good. I think I could, you know, I could see myself actually chasing some like cards in the set. And so that's why I have it there. It makes sense. I think this might be the first era where we don't have anything that lines up. We'll see. We'll see when we get up here. I mean some. I think obviously the back half of this era is kind of up for debate because it's. What do you like a little bit better? What do you. The top half is kind of like our top five will probably be very similar, but we'll see how they line up. You know what I mean? But another kind of. Maybe even a hot take on this one too. This set is where I kind of just chose to separate what was. What comes out of this era in total. And I think Shining Legends is going to be my eighth decade best set. It might be close to you might be pretty far off. There is some absolute banger cards in here. The Shining Mew, the Shining Rayquaza, the Shining Arus. Outside of that Mewtube. And then what. What are you chasing? You know what I mean? Like outside of those, you know, cards, it's obviously a small set. It's a subset. It is a smaller set. Hard to get, less packs all. All the. All the things right. But it just like with how much the rest of this kind of has to offer. Number eight. That's where. Where Shining Legends land. Okay, I don't have that here. This is where I have Burning Shadows. Okay. Burning Shadows I think is obviously infamous with the Rainbow Charizard. But I actually think that there's some nice cards in here. Outside. I think the Pikachu in here is really, really nice. The Marshadow card is really cool. Ace Rolla is a very cool trainer. But for me, like, I'm a big Darkrai guy and the Darkrai cards in here are awesome. I love the full art in here. The rainbow is nice and then this might be a hot take, but the Charizard gx, not the rainbow, not the full art. The normal Charizard GX in Burning Shadows is such a banger. It is such a cool looking Charizard and I've like learned this with myself kind of over the last several months. I really like a fierce looking Charizard. You know, I like the Dragon Charizard. I like the Legendary Treasures Charizard and I like this Charizard a lot. I think it is very, very cool. I wish that card had some sort of texture because I think it would be an Elite card. But I'm saying though, those kind of things. And like ho is nice. There's some other really nice cards too. In Burning Shadows I think kind of gets slept on a little bit because the Charizard is such a juggernaut. Right. Like the Rainbow Charizard is one of the biggest chases of the whole era. Right. So yeah, that's why I have that there. So that was number eight. What do you have at number seven? Number seven, I have the Almighty Ultra Prism. I really like Ultra Prism a lot. I think this is. As I said before, I really love the prisms. This is where you get the two best prisms in my opinion. In Giratina and Darkrai. I think both those illustrations of the characters in the Prism card themselves phenomenal. It's one of my favorite Darkrai arts of all time. I have it in a PSA 10. It was like a. A very hard chase for me to find that. And I love it. Then you have an elite. Elite level just. Just gallery of trainers. Right. The you have the Lusamine like the dark version. Mars Lily obviously is. This is like the Lily card, the Lana Cynthia. And then you have Eeveelutions in the set. Leafeon Glaceon. It is. It's a pretty stacked set and it's a fun set to rip. It's kind of a tough one because there's really only one trainer per box usually. But with all the prisms and stuff like that, you do end up getting a decent amount of hits. There's some cool stuff in here. I have to agree because at number seven, I also have Ultra Prism first match. We've had all the entire era here. The Giratina Prism is a banger. It is two EV Commons, Helkia Dialga, Leafeon Glaceon, the All Star Lily. This was also the first set to feature the Prism Star cards. This is where they. Where they brought them out. So it is interesting that this is our first one here. We'll see. Yeah, I know. Keeping tabs here that you have a couple that I've already ran through. So it's going to be interesting to see where this. Where this heads here. But for number six, I have lost Thunder. You got the Celeb the Ditto Prism cards. One of my favorite, like Celebi, probably top five Celeb cards that I like. I just like the art of that one. You got the huge checklist of this set. There's just so much that you're looking for. It's actually just makes ripping so much more fun when it's, there's so much in a set. And you have the Tyranitar, the Mimikyu, the Lugia, the Nine Tails. You know, you, you already said this set, correct? I did, yeah. And it's the same stuff that you were going over. I didn't really have anything to add. I just feel like such a big set. That Mimikyu is such an awesome card. It is very good. Even like the rainbow Mimikyu in that one, it kind of looks, I mean it works really well. It does. And of course Lugia, this set is great. This is a good set. This was probably for all of the sets up until, you know where we're at. It's obviously it made its way to this point for a reason, but it's, it changed kind of like it still had that same vibe where it was the background colored Pokemon with the same art style. Right. But it's just like offered more, bigger selection, more cards, more chase. Like it just really kind of brought something that if they would have did something like this for the first half of this era, it would be a completely different ranking system. Yeah, yeah. And I like Lost Thunder was a tough one for me to place for sure. Like I had Lost Thunder, Burning Shadows, Ultra Prism, kind of like I had them flip flopping in my list a whole bunch. But you know, it's, it's tough when like your favorite Pokemon get featured in other sets. It's like they edge them out a little. Yeah, yeah, yeah. My number six. This is where it really got tough for me. I'm gonna be honest. Shining Legends is my number six. Like you said. At the end of the day, it is a smaller set. But I think the Chases of this set are so incredibly good that it just carries the set. I think the Shining cards are incredible. I absolutely love them. And like, it's one of those things that I didn't appreciate them as much until I saw them in person because they have such an interesting shine to them when you see them in person. It totally changed my outlook on them after seeing them. And then of course, the Mewtwo is a generational card. I, I, it's probably my favorite Mewtwo art of all time. It is a phenomenal card. And I think this was our first real alternate art in the, in the hobby, if I'm not mistaken. Was there a regular. Yeah, there's a regular Mewtwo full art. Like the standard. Yeah. And then it's interesting, like if you consider that that'd be kind of like. Does you consider that an alt art? Because it's like a different style like Mewtwo being raised or however you want to in the test tube or, or being tested on or however they. However you look at that portion of it. Like it's interesting because you don't really see that out of the Pokemon. Yeah. It's just very nostalgic to me. Right. Like when I think of Mewtwo, like my, my memories of Mewtwo is that original movie and that's the first time you see him is in that. And it's like it's so ingrained in my brain seeing that. So it's like when I saw that that was a card. Yeah, it was unbelievable. And then they put the treatment of the Shining cards on the Mewtwo in the card. It is absolutely spectacular. It deserves every inch of hype it gets. That card is truly, truly special. So that's where it really, I mean it carried. It carries that set so much. And then the Shining Mew I think is great. The Rayquaza is awesome. All the Shinings I think are really, really cool. Outside of that, I do agree with you. Like there's not that much else. But those cards in particular, just phenomenal. It is definitely like an iconic card in Pokemon. And even in Pokemon Pocket where they put the animated version of that, like where Mewtwo's breaking out of the test tube and out of the facility. Right. That's such a banger as well. So it's like, it's really like anything that like sets apart some type of a moment where it's later used in other ways. I mean that's obviously something that really stood out. So here's where. Which also just happens to be the top five. Top five. This is where I feel my list gets interesting and the era kind of heats up. Me too. I think we're covering really two completely different halves of an era. The early sets really feel like this like brutal pull rate lottery. You're chasing like one card and if you don't hit that, better luck next time. You know, some cool arts that you're looking for. But these late stage sets, man, they represent some of like the highest ceiling, best art, most sought after sealed products in whatever area you want to Call this modern. Pre. Modern post mid it. However you want to categorize that for this section of time. This is some of the most sought after products. Yeah. And starting out number five, I have Unified Minds. You got the Gar Chomp and Giratina, the Mega Sableye and the T T Alt. You got the Mew and the Mewtwo, the tag teams. It's absolutely phenomenal. It's such a great, great. This top five was. It is spectacular. It is so good. I also have unified Minds. I'm actually. I'm shocked. I thought. I thought I was gonna get a little pushback for quitting Unified here, but it is. I mean, all of these sets are stacked, right? Like absolutely incredible. I think what All. All these have tag teams, right? So I mean. Yeah, almost. Almost all of them. All of them do. We'll get into it. We'll get into it. It's all. But we'll get into it. We'll see. We'll see. We'll see. Unified Minds. And this is my hot take about unified Minds. Unified Minds would be the best set of the era, hands down, bar none. It would be up there with some of these other sets we're about to talk about had they not taken the three best cards from the set out of it and turn them into promos. The Darkrai Umbreon, the Alt Art is a box promo. It's a. It is my far and away favorite tag team card of all time. I think it is phenomenal. It is incredible. I love is such a special card because they took that out. All you get in the set is the normal gx. The full art textured version is a Japanese exclusive. Never even came to the US market. Then you have Espeon. Deoxys also has a incredible Alt art also in that same box with the Umbreon. Same story. Full art never came to the US market. If those two cards alone were in the set, it would be one of the top sets. Then you have the Mew Mewtwo. You have three tins that came out. The Mew Mewtwo tin, the Lucario Melmetal and the Giratina Garchomp. All three of those tins came out using the alternate artworks as the promos. In those. They're banger cards. The Mew Mewtwo is one of the coolest cards. I love that card so much. And in the set we got the rainbow version, which is a cool card. But like, had these Alt arts been included in the set, it would have been an unbelievable, unbelievable set. Unified Minds because, like, the lineup of characters is phenomenal. That being said, still a great set, right? And I just want to mention a couple other standouts. The Misty's favorite card. Phenomenal, right? I mean, it's probably our best Misty card we've ever gotten. And then an altar that I just absolutely love is the Alolan Exeggutor with the rowlet. You just have the giant tree and then just the tiniest little rowlet right there on him. I think it is an incredible card. It's just awesome. The Raichu and Raichu. I mean, it's a stacked set, right? I mean, what can we say? But that was my rant. I. It always just baffles me. They took. They took so many chase cards out of the set, drained the well of like. Like what would be all the top chases of the set and put them as promos. Very, very interesting. So that is interesting that they would put the alt arts right. And you think, like, what would be the reason behind doing something like that? Putting the better version right, like, during that era. I mean, tins have been out since 2003. I think we date back to the first tin being released by Pokemon. Obviously, this era being in the. The late 2000 and tens. Not. Not really, like, brand new to the market at that point. It's been out a while. Maybe, you know, tin sales, maybe they seen them start to struggle. They say, oh, if you get this alt art, you buy this tin, it's the only way to get it. You're kind of pushing up, like, that black and white era. They're. They're putting out tins. And there's a rule in the game that you go by the most recent printing of a card. So it would be the altar and the standard version are both gonna have the same attacks and everything on it, obviously, as a card. So if they put the tin out a year later, that keeps that card in rotation for an extra year. So with the sun and moon promos, that's where they came out with the yellow A rule. That's why you get, like the 77A. Interesting. And so then when that card. That is the alt art, when the normal card rotated out, the A rotated out with it, no matter when it was printed for the game. That's why you'll see some of these cards with the A and the. You know, I would have thought when looking that up that it was because they were trying to boost tin sales, but they were trying to fix a loophole where certain cards that were printed earlier that were going out had other cards and so they had to put that on and then it. It made the entire standard format to kind of balance it out. So it's kind of interesting to. That is interesting, actually. See that? Huh? Number four. Can we go five for five? What do you got? I got Unbroken Bond. I love Unbroken Bonds. I. I love that they didn't take the best cards out of the set and made them promos for one. But I do think that there is some bangers. They did actually do it with a couple. The Restroom Charizard. They did do they put it into a box, but they did to less. And I think the Gardevoir Sylveon Altar is a phenomenal, phenomenal card. It's spectacular. Good. And then this set is. It's very, very unique. There's a couple of cards in particular that are just normal hollows that in this era and now. Right. Like, you usually just kind of pass through the hollows and, you know, you're looking for the big, juicy hits. Right. But there's two cards in particular in this set. The first one is the Snorlax sitting on the tree with the Pikachus. It's one of the best Snorlax cards of all time, in my opinion. And it is a. It's an absolute, absolute banger. That's really cool. There's a Gengar in here. It's actually a non hollow rare. That is a very, very cool car. If they made that holo, it would have been unbelievable. And then the. The last one of these kind of interesting, just normal hollows is the Greninja. There's a Greninja rare hollow, and he's there kind of in a shadow. And when you look at the shadow a little bit closer, it's a shadow of a Charizard. And it's a really, really sweet card. And it's great. I think also just like an honorable mention to another alt is the Marshadow Machamp is a banger. Just a sick, sick. Well, two for two in the top five. I also have Unbroken Bonds is number four. They said it couldn't be done. We'll see. I mean, five for five. We're just the odds here. Top three. These are hard. The top three are tough. These two, they kind of make sense. I. We'll see what happens here coming up. Yeah, this set is awesome. I mean, Sylveon being one of my favorite evolutions, you know, getting the Altar there. Super awesome card, you know, and. And even like Lucario and Mel Metal, the. The Charizard and Reshiram, though. That's such a sick, sick, sick card. It is. They took like that. It's like the same thing we were talking about the entire era. The single background color. And then. I don't know. I don't know. It just pops. And then the two. You know, the orange and white kind of just pop on that. It's. No, I hear you, man. But the Marshadow and Machamp, all. It's fire. It's fire. The sunset and everything in the background. It is. I just sit in there watching the sunset. That is a. That is such a sick card. Yeah. It's one of those cards that I also didn't appreciate until I. I pulled it. Right. And I saw it in person, and I was like. Like, you. You see it on paper, and it looks cool, right? But you're like, yeah, it's a Machamp card. You know, it's cool. But then you see it in person, and it is. It just pops. And then you get the texture on there and everything. It. It's a. It's a nice card. Brings us to the top three. The best three. And due to a technicality, you are correct. The top five sets all do have a tag team in them. Correct. I look through it. My number three hidden fates. And the only tag team, of course, is the three Birds. The Birds. But there's none at the end. It's the Shiny vault that we're really chasing here. It's the birds. Obviously. Iconic, right? The ETB Stained glass birds. Great, great, great, great promo. Still the reigning ETB promo champion. Promo of all time. So good. Imagine that with a Pokemon center stamp from back there. Oh, my goodness. That would just be out of this world. The original Shiny vault. Explosion out of here. You got the Shiny Zard. The full art. Shiny Zard. One of my favorite Charizard, like, chases. This was a really fun set that I did a master set of probably, like, six years ago. And the shiny. Like, just going after the entire shiny collection. It's such a good. It's unreal. The shiny umbi, the full art. It kind of ties in, like, that sun and moon. The base art. The same exact art. Shiny with that silver, like, shiny treatment. It's just. Yeah. That being one of my. The little extra they add on those shiny cards is. It really helps pop all those cards. Yeah. So good. We do not have the same top. My goodness. This was really difficult for me, and I really had to, like, really, really had to think here and really, like, how do we go about this here, I'm in shock right now. I don't even know what you're going to say. So I have at my number three best set from sun and Moon is Team Up. It is team up and great set. All three of these sets are like, on my, like, just about Mount Rushmore of sets all. I'll show my cards. Sun and Moon era is truly one of my favorite eras, especially the tag team block of sun and Moon. I absolutely love it. Team up is a great set. It definitely is. I mean, they have the lineup of characters that they have in here for tag teams. Magikarp, Whale Lord. That alt art is phenomenal. Pikachu, Zekrom, Eevee, Snorlax. Right. Venus or Celebi. Phenomenal, phenomenal characters. And then you have Gengar Mimikyu. One of the best tag team matchups that we've ever gotten, for sure. It is a powerhouse of two great characters. And then you have one of the best cards of all time, in my opinion. In the Lovebirds. Right. Obviously, that card alone, it's one of the biggest chases of the hobby. Right? Like, it's. It is phenomenal. I think it just sold for like $19,000 recently in the PSA 10, which is insane. But they did something with this set and I mentioned it with unified minds, but they took three of the best cards out of the set and made them tin promos. The Eevee Snorlax promo would have been one of the top chases of this set, in my opinion. It would have been up there with the Gengar Mimikyu would have been up there, maybe not quite with the Lovebirds, but phenomenal, phenomenal set. The Pikachu Zekrom Altar, also tin promo. Unbelievably cool card. And then the Venusaur Selby, also really nice. But those two cards in particular, it's crazy to me that they took them out and made them into promos. I think those. Had those been in the set, I think it would have helped inch this. Definitely up the list. Potential being potentially being a number one. Obviously all three of these sets are very close. They're all amazing. But for me, that is what kind of. When I. When I'm comparing these sets, right? And then you also have the factor that Team up is just an absolutely brutal set to rip. It is. People think Fusion Strike, Evolving Skies. Like those sets are tough. Team up is absolutely brutal. Absolutely brutal. So that is why I have it at number three. I know that's going to ruffle some feather feathers. I'm sure we'll get a ton of comments. Not number three. Yeah. I honestly think with that ranking there, we don't match the entire way out now. So two out of five wasn't bad. It was a good run while we were there. We'll see. We'll see for sure. But I'm. I'm guessing here my number two is Cosmic. And I put Cosmic as the final set of the era. They introduced the character Rares, the full art cards that featured the Pokemon alongside their trainers. This set could have easily been number one. Right. It might even be your number. We'll find out shortly. But the Pikachu, the Mimikyu, the Koffing. Okay, I see where we're going with this. I see what's happening here. Sabotage. Great cards that. That whole lineup of the trainers with their Pokemon Unreal. The Arceus Dialga and Palkia statue card. Such a. That's one of my, like, top five cards in the era. That is so cool. I love that car. That is. That is such a sick card. Lineups like the Blastoise and Pip Blob, Reshiram and Zekrom, Charizard and Breaks. And again, it's man and the. And the trainers. I mean, the set is huge. Huge. Great, great set. If they took the Clefairy Lily, which was the 13th character rare, that was only in a Japanese booster box promo, right? And put that into this set, that is a banger. I think this would be number one. That might have pushed it. That might have just gave it just a little bit more. I just. I just. It was good. But in comparison to the number one, I. I had to stop it here at number two. Fair. It's fair. This is tough. This. The end of this era was so, so stacked. Unbelievably stacked. My number two is, of course, hidden fates for most of the reasons that you said. The absolute all star lineup of shinies that they picked or the shiny vault of this set is just so good, right? You have all these Eeveelutions, obviously, the Charizard Dark Rise in here, right? Reshiram ho Greninja. It is just build Lucario, right? Like, it's. It is amazing. Then you have amazing trainers, like Cynthia's in there, right? And the Jesse and James card is iconic. It's incredible. And then you have the baby shinies. There's a lot of good baby shinies in there. Charmander characters. Charmeleon. The Zoru is sick. Right? Then there's, like, promos, too, which I wish they didn't do. Wish it was in the set. But there's Rayquaza promo, right? That's. There's a Zor Zoroark promo. Right. Like, it is just so stacked. But they only did it with a couple. Right. And there's just so many. And one of the main reasons why I have this so high is Hidden Fates is one of the most fun sets to rip for me. I think it is a phenomenal time. You are. If you're ripping a couple of packs, you're almost guaranteed to hit something. And it always feels good to hit a shiny, right? Like it's just. There's something about it that just feels great. Of sun and moon. Yeah. And they peaked with the Fate. The Fate sets with the first one in Hidden Fates. Right. Shining Fates didn't even come close. And then Paldean Fates is good, but they screwed up by doing all these baby shinies and then not really any full arts. The full art shinies in this set are what make this set so fun. You know, you hit one of those, it really feels like you. Like you hit something. Right. And their cards are all really cool, like you said. Like there's like the extra texture and the little extra elements that just. It really sets them apart and it just feels really good to rip. So that's why I have that. My number two green Espeon. The green shiny Espeon. I mean, banger. The shiny forms of the Pokemon. I mean. Yeah, absolutely. Just amazing. Yep. And you're at 94 cards in the shiny vault that you're chasing. And I mean it's. It does. It just makes it a lot of fun. It's a smaller set, smaller printed, It's a half set. So it was only an ETBS and then obviously the other SKUs, but no booster boxes in that one. So. Great. And when I was getting back into the hobby, it was the set that was on the shelves and I bought and ripped so much nostalgia based ripping of that with like what was available at the time. I mean, Hidden Fates was what I would push it way up to the top even probably more than I. I did here. You know, I had it at number three, but I'd probably bring it up if that was what I was basing this off of, you know. Yeah, it's. It's a good set. It is a lot of fun. And there's a lot of good chases in there that you can get. And like you said, even if you just get a baby shiny, you're like, what a banger. Charmeleon baby shiny. Fire A baby Shiny, like there's just so many like good baby shinies in there. And you know, Evie, my gosh, that Evie baby Shiny is. It's a banger. But now anyone doing the math, crossing off the sets at home, they know we did not line up here at number one. My number one is your number three. Came out February 2019. The first set to feature tag team Pokemon GX cards. Latias Latios, the Lovebirds, the Snorlax and Eevee. The Pikachu and Zekrom. Magikarp and Wailord. The Gengar and Mimikyu. Alt is a banger that is also in my like top five cards of the era. It is so good. And usually when you come out with something, you know, how you say Hidden Fates did it best? I mean, can you, can you get better? Maybe one day one of their, their baby shiny or their shiny vaults is going to outdo what Hidden Fates has done. Some of the cards in Cosmic, they definitely got better a few sets later than they did in Team Up. However, this being printed in February 2019, that culture of collectors was really after the Charizard, the shiny variant cards throughout the era. No one was even looking at cards like the Lovebird. The Lovebird was only like $100 until a couple few years ago. Right. It really hasn't went up like this set didn't start gaining popularity until, you know, three years, maybe a little bit longer than that. I'd have to look up to be sure. But it's so good. So the one thing about Team up is that most mainline Pokemon TCG sets, they'll receive an initial print run and then they'll get one or two major restraint restocks or formal like reprints in like a 12 to 24 month window. Right. Team up kind of escaped this because it received an initial like smaller print run. And that was in early 19. It was never really given that dedicated large scale factory reprint because when Team up would have went back and got that cleanup or like back inventory reprint. The global pandemic hit in early 2020 and set back the supply chain logistics for Pokemon. So Team up being one of the shorter printed sets. I mean, they printed Cosmic so many times. Yeah, right. Outside of that, but outside of a few tins. And it's really. There's so many different configurations for tins. It's most of those tins. It's the first print run of those that have Team Up. Yeah, it's hard even to find loose packs of Team up because they didn't print in that Many products. So I think for me, I put it at number one because the supply of this is so much less than Cosmic. Even though Cosmic is a banger set. I mean you could almost probably set these two side by side and you know, but you can't do that when you're ranking. Right. It's got to have a different number. But it really not getting that second wave push. And who knows if he would have had more of that and they would have had more of the Chase cards out or if they would have printed the tins and maybe they, you know, maybe would have, you know, who knows what would have happened? Like that really disrupted everything for almost an entire year, which really is what started the pandemic. Having a hard time finding cards, the print and all these other things. Banger set though, I'm actually Lovebirds. It's a great card. It's iconic card. It's not one of my favorite cards. The Gengar and Mimikyu Alto. That's a banger. That is such a sick card. The Lovebirds is a cool card. It's just not personally for me, like one of my favorites. Yeah, I mean it's a great set for sure, great set. But for me it just can't overtake the goat that is Cosmic Eclipse. Cosmic Eclipse is and has been one of my all time favorite sets. Not in the era, but in the entire hobby. It is absolutely phenomenal. Like you mentioned earlier, it brought character rares to the hobby. You know that it's had several names now, right? Star Character Rares, Trainer Galleries, and then that's I think what ultimately became our illustration Rares now. But the lineup of character rares in this are amazing, right? Like you mentioned, Pikachu, Piplup, Mimikyu, all of those are bangers. Obviously I'm very partial to the koffing that is. When I saw that card when I was like originally like going to start master setting my koffings, this was like when I wasn't even really into the hobby. I saw that car and I was like, this is so, so cool. And that started me looking more into the set and I was just blown away. So you have that, that's just one piece. And what's cool about that is they put it in the reverse hollow slot. So that made it as an extra hit in addition to all of these other other things I'm about to talk about. Then you have rainbow rares as well, right? This is just like they took everything from the era and they were just like, all right, let's make a Powerhouse lineup of every single one of these things. So they're like, okay, cool rainbows. Boom. Here's 47 of them. Character errors. New total rarity. Right? Beautiful cards that Pikachu card. One of my favorite Pikachu cards of all time, without a doubt. Then you have a unbelievable lineup of trainers, right? Including some tag team trainers, right? Which are really, really cool as well. Cynthia, Caitlin. Red and Blue is a banger card. Then you have a incredible Lily card, a Rosa card. That's a banger as well. Then you have full arts that look awesome as well in this. And then you have the alt arts. Incredible. Incredible. Like you mentioned earlier, the Blasty Piplup is so sick, so nice. You know, even like some of the characters that are like not as cared about. Like the Noggin Duzzlord. Right. That alt art is still a nice looking card. The Megalopunny Jigglypuff, nice card. But the two outside of the adp, Arceus Dialga Palkia, which I think is just banging. Unbelievable, unreal. Are the Solgaleo Lunala GX with Lily. You have the moonlight in the background. It's a beautiful scene. Got both the Pokemon, they're huge. With Lily right in the middle. It's incredible. And then you have the Reshiram Zekrom Alt with N. There it is. Both of those cards are just fantastic. And then it's a massive set. So you have tons of great comments, tons of other just like normal GX's, normal tag team GX's and all of this comes together. And because you have those character rares, because you have all these other things, there are so many hits that you get when you rip the set that it makes it a ton of fun to rip. Right. It's the crown Zenith. What I would say of the era, right. Like you said, hidden fates. I think this even more so feels kind of like that. It is a phenomenal set. Feels great to rip and like you hit anything in this set and I think you're pretty happy. Except for maybe like the Wishy washy, right? Like there's so many great cards and it's. It's a ton of fun and I think it just, it does such a great job of just encompassing the whole era, right? It's the bookend of the era and they just, they put it all together into this one set and I think it really closes it out just perfectly. I don't disagree with you. Great set. One thing to, to maybe notably add as well, a lot of gold cards, obviously during this era, all Gold cards were items. You know, technically this card is an item card as well. But Lily's Poke doll gonna be the only like Pokemon featured gold card in the era. Everything else is like truly an item or a stage outside of the Dragon Majesty. What an Ultra Necrozma or something that. Yeah, but that's like, it's like such like an outlier of everything. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Unlike obviously they had the other gold cards. Right. The other style where it was completely different but the actual like item gold cards. Yep. As well. That was. That's kind of great set. Great era. You know, we see kind of what's coming out. We've ranked Scarlet Violet already. Bowman. Yeah. You know we're a few sets in now to the Mega era. And great, great stuff coming out of here too. It is good. I think Mega Evolution, when we started so hot, I really thought Mega Evolution was going to be like a contender for like this is going to be one of the best errors of all time. Yeah. And I think it's kind of fallen a little bit for me. These last couple of releases have kind of. Yeah, it's. It's going to be tough going forward where they're going to print twice as many sets. Yeah. And it's a one to one English Japan. I mean the two to one Japan to English sets really packs. Yeah. The set in there. And so having a one to one just leaves you with I think more to chase, you know, which is insane because Ascended Heroes being a half set and really all the half sets, special sets, however you want to call it. Yeah. Have been unreal. They've been so good. Yeah. That's where book one I think really shines. They just kind of. They're just like we're going to throw all of these cool things and ideas that we can't put because of like TCG reasons. Yeah. They're just like throw it all out there, you know. I would agree. What's next? XY X Y. That's going to be it. That's going to be a tough one. That'll be actually it's also a lot smaller. Right. So it is. Yeah. Let us know guys, in the comments where, where you place all these sets. Do you think I'm crazy for putting Team up at third? I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I kind of want to. I kind of want to see and chat with you guys and. Yeah. Yeah. I mean honestly once we get so X Y, I think it's like 14 sets. So I mean, that, that we can probably do as an entire episode. But then like going back, I mean, black and White, I guess has a decent amount. But before that, I mean, call Legends era all to its own heart. Gold, Soul, Silver five, Platinum five. I mean, might have to start combining some errors together here to, to rank them out. I mean, you combine those three and then get back from there and you know, then you really get into some of that. Those are going to be. WOTC is going to be crazy. Diamond and Pearl, Ex. Ruby and Sapphire. I mean the E Card series, like however we tie that together. Legendary collection. Yep. And then of course, you know, you got the Neo, the Tops, the Gym Heroes, the base set. That's. Oh my gosh, we have so much. It's going to be crazy to sort some of that. It's unreal seeing that stuff 30 years later. And it's like we talk about how a lot of these cards in, in this era are now becoming rails and chases that initially when released they weren't like that. So it's like over time, Obviously we've had 30 years since the base set this year. So you have, you see where this has gone. What's, what's the chases of these sets 20 years from now. You don't know yet what Scarlet and Violet, other cards that aren't really as popular as they might be. Like, who knows what we're chasing out of that era. It's, it's kind of interesting. We might have to go back and take a look at that. So. But yeah, definitely take a look.
