Extra Innings Episode 13- With Jake of Wax Pack Wisdom and Matt From Providence

Welcome to extra innings on the sports card clubhouse with the hit list. I'm Jake and that is Matt from Providence. Here we are so back again. So the number one crew number yes. The sports card clubhouse that the crew is expanding, gone international. Really. Jeremy Lee now part of. Part of the sports card clubhouse. Really? Yeah. Big. And he's had. And he responded to my comment congratulating him, talking about how much he enjoys extra innings with the hit list. No kidding. Jeremy Lee, big fan. You buy that? I do. He's Canadian. They're all, they're all nice. Tall guy, Very tall, tall. Drink of water. Sat next. Sat next to him at dinner at the National. Easy. Yeah. So there you go. Sports car clubhouse. We. We're imagine signing up to be the second best bald guy on the channel. Classic. All right, so let's, let's get. Let's talk about this. So I had an idea and it was actually born out of a conversation that was on Greg and David Chase. They were on surface issues. David Chase was filling in for. For Mike because Never heard of him. Was traveling. I wanted to talk about rules for. Do you have rules for collecting and if. And what are they? And it comes down to it's more about like, it's not about like, you know, I would never spend this much or whatever. It's about the cards themselves. And when we buy the kind of cards we buy, the condition varies greatly. And you have a. I think you have a little bit of a different perspective on this because of the fact that you are a dealer, but obviously you buy stuff and it's like, well, I keep it for my PC or not, like, whatever. So I'll just kind of talk about my. Kind of what I look for, which is like I want to try to get the nicest copy of the card in the lowest grade that I can. And that what, what does, what I appeal means to me is do I look at the card and am I happy with it? Am I, am I. Can I look at the card and I'm proud of it. And what matters the most to me are the, the sort of vibrancy of the color of the card, the, the registration, like how, how good is the printing? Like those are. I have increasingly just realized that those are the two things that are the most important to me is like color and registration and like presentation is. Is the next most important thing. I don't mind. I don't mind some creases. I don't mind if a card is a little bit. Is a tick off center or even A lot off center, but the presentation is really important to me. I. I need to be able to have a clear image of the guy's face. And there is. There's. There are cards that I have really liked of. Important cards, like, high up on my various lists that I've had. I've passed on because of the. For that reason, I'll. I'll just bring up a card. You. Don't do it. Don't. Don't do it. Not again. Don't do what? Go ahead. You gotta make fun of my E90 Cy Young. I wasn't gonna make fun of it. I was just gonna say, like, that's a card I really want. But I. You know. But the crease went, like, through his eyes, basically. That was gonna upset me. Now, you had that card. You sold it at Shriners. Congrats to the. Whoever bought that. If that's. That's for the. I'm not. I'm not. You say, I'm gonna make fun of your card. I'll never knock how somebody else collects what they like, how they like the cards that they like. I will never, ever do that. I will never be like, it's gross. I don't want that. That's. That's not my style. But I'm just telling you, if I bought a. And there was. I'll give you another example that there was a card that popped up on Facebook recently. I really wanted to. That's really hard to come by. A E N 162 Goodwin champions. Tim Keefe. You know, he's a Hall of Fame pitcher. He was from Cambridge. Yes, I've seen this. I've seen this. Now, this card was bought and now is trying to be flipped, but the. There's paper loss under his nose, goes down like this. Yeah. Like, just like. It's like, basically his nose down here. And I'm like, I would never be able to look at that thing and be proud of it. Yeah, but. But that's. You know, but that's me. Now. I've had some cards that go. Go. I have. So, like, that's my standard is I need to have, like, there can be creases, paper loss, whatever, but not. Not on the face. And if it's on the face, it's got to be inconspicuous. So. And I've had to learn how to kind of collect like this. There's cards that. That I really liked at the time that the more I looked at it, the more I'm like, I don't really like this I'll give you and another example card I sold to you not that long ago was. And again, I don't know if you still have this card or if you kept it or sold it. There was a. The Rub Waddell T206. The. The. The pitching pose that, that had. That had a crease, like through his eyes. Right through his eyes? Yeah, right through his eyes. I don't know if you still have that or if it's going great. I'm glad that was somebody's. Hopefully somebody really wanted that. I just, I remember I bought that from you originally and I just was like, yeah, I'm really excited to get this card and have. And have a D206 Waddell in my collection. Just over time, I just look, every time I looked at it, I was like, I'm just not happy with this. So I've had to kind of train myself to like, not jump at the first thing. And there's. You can always upgrade. It's hard sometimes with the pre war stuff, it's harder to upgrade because they don't come around as much. But those are. And, and I, I'll go back to like. And. And I, I'm not as. I guess that the rules are not super hard and fast for me. And I do think that there are some cards that, especially at certain price points, I'm okay with having a beater of the card and I'll, you know, give credit. We talked about him on our other, other, other. On. On the hit list. It was of Dan, Dan Vintage Baseball PC, who coined the term. Who coined the term own appeal, which is that idea of like. And he came. I, I apologize. I don't remember which one it is, but the math, it's like either either the E92 or E101 Matthewson. Yes. That he. His copy is very low grade. But he bought that card because he, he wanted it. He's like, I own it now. And so there are certain cards that I would probably be okay with with that just having a beater. But then there's other like, you know, I. The example that Greg gave on Sports Card Clubhouse was talking about his, his, like, rail card is like the shoot the. The Shoeless Joe Jackson Cracker Jack. And I think David asked him, was like, well, could you, you know, buy. Would you buy a card for, you know, buy a Cracker Jack Shoeless Joe that, like, didn't meet? Because, because Greg, to his credit, he has. Greg has very exacting standards when it comes to cars that he buys and he was like, he. Greg, basically, he gave this analogy that was like, would you rather be with a spouse who treats you like garbage or be alone? And, you know, David said, I'd rather, you know, rather be alone. And I said. And I. And I understand where Greg's coming from at that. That's a great line. That's a great line. Oh, that's. That's. Greg pulls that stuff. He comes up with that stuff in his sleep. But anyway, that's my. Where's he at on the. To C.J. jackson. If it's got a crease through the eyes, where's he at on that? I think what he was saying. I think what he's saying was that would be a no go for him. For him, it's like, it's got to meet my standard. I need to be happy with it. I got to look at it. So I've been rambling for a while, and again, you. I'm interested in your perspective. You're telling me. You're telling me you have a. Oh, my God, I forgot the topic again. Do you have rules for collecting? No rules. No rules. I want the lowest grade, highest eye appeal combo for the cheapest price. Same as you. Yeah, I'm not. Give me. I need a PSA7 guy. There's guys that come to my show. Do you have any PSA 7s? Everybody collect their own way. But, like, if I get a six that looks like a ten, you. You. Your rule says you're gonna pass on it because at least it's gonna appeal. It's gonna look good. But anyways. Yeah, no, I. No, I want it to look good. I want it to look good. I'm trying to find a car that's just like a beater, but I'm just. I'm just happy to have it. See, I'm a trimmed guy. I'll take a trimmed copy of an old card if. If it'll present well. Like, I have. I don't want to get up and reach it right now. But, like, the Hornsby I got, the American caramel Hornsby I have. It's trimmed. It presents so beautifully. And I don't mind. That's how I get into an expensive old car, cheap. I'll try to buy a trimmed copy or, you know, something. But, yeah, there are no rules. No rules. And I think, like, I think some folks are not into. They don't like to upgrade or downgrade. I think one of the things I learned from you is about downgrading. You know, like, why. Like, why not why not down. I love a downgrade. I love the downgrade because I'm only downgrading in. Great. I'm not. I'm. I'm up. Generally, the upgrade is an eye appeal. Right. So. Oh, yeah, it's coming. It was a PSA3, now it's. I got a PSA1, but the thing's a blazer, so that's where I'll do the upgrade. Right. Does. Does. This was an interesting topic that they discussed. How much do you care about the back of a card? Oh, very little. Depends. Even if it's. Even if it's one that you're like, okay, this is going to be one that it will be in the showcase. No. Okay, so very, very little. We're talking piece and I just don't care. Just any card that you're gonna buy the back. I mean, if it's a Tolstoy back, you'd like it to say Tolstoy, you know, but. Yeah, no, it doesn't for PC. Doesn't bother me. Doesn't bother me at all. Yeah, no, yeah. I'm the same way. I just as long, you know, I don't. There are some cars that obviously the backs are a cool part of the card. Whether they, whether it's obviously T206s. That matters a great deal in terms of. Right. How much a card is going to be valuable. That doesn't matter as much in other stats. So no rules, right. Because if I had rules, I wouldn't have this car. Right. It's creased, it's got paper loss and. Sorry, you're. You're showing an E94. Oh, that's right. This is the audio show. E94, 1911 George closed Candy Tris speaker, the red back, super rare card. So, I mean, if you don't want it with a crease, there may be only a few in existence that don't have a crease. Right. So, yeah, huge, awful creases. But I own one and like, not many people say that own appeal. Right now, the day I see a red one affordable without a crease, this thing is gone, baby. It is gone. But until then, we're stuck with it. Not stuck with it, but I'm happy to have a copy. You know what I mean? Right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry again, but the E106, which is also the E90 image of the Tris speaker, like, this thing is crumbled up, opened up, put into a bike spoke, flipped against the wall. It's done it all. But, like, good luck finding one so, yeah, I'm happy to have this beater, but, yeah, no, no rules. No rules. That card, that set, you will. All of the cards are in bad shape. Is that right? E106. Oh, God. You never see them. You never see that. Like, maybe occasion. Maybe one once in a blue moon, you'll see one that's like a four or a five. But, like. Yeah, my tinker. My Tinker that I bought, this is the example I was give. I was talking about, like, the Tinker that I bought at Strongsville from Aaron Value Vintage cards. It's a beater, but Aaron gave me a great deal that I couldn't say no to. So is that what I have too? Do I have that card or is mine. You have the E102, right? SGC 5. That card is beautiful. Talking about colors. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. But, yeah, no rules. I just. Sometimes when you collect some of the stuff, like it's. It's. Give me a copy until I can find a nice copy, you know, and if I die and this is the best cop I ever am, that's fine. That's fine. There you go. But, yeah, no rules. No rules. That was it. Providence. That was it. I just wanted to talk about rules on collecting cards. You know, collect however you want, enjoy the hobby. I don't know. Were you expecting me to have more of a controversial stance on this? No, I just. I thought. I just. I. I think you have a different perspective because. Because you. You. Anything that you buy could eventually end up for sale. Yeah, well. Yeah. So I. I just picked this up this weekend. We just talked about this on our show to 56, tops. So I had an SGC four and a half a couple weeks ago that. It's been in the PC. It was off center. I was kind of sick of looking at it. The rest of the 56 I have are PSA holders. So you know what? I sold or put the SGC four and a half into my inventory. This happened to walk up to the table and so. All right, it's a PSA2. It's a lot cheaper. So this will hold a place in my PC until I can upgrade and then it'll go right back out. So reasonable. That's. Yeah. Again, you have a little different perspective. This is what all I wanted was a different perspective. I love it. We do here. I love it. I haven't looked at this card in a while. I love this card. You want oh, six. It's great card. Anyway.
