It must be Saturday morning because it's another edition of Hobby Hotline, and I'm joined by two gentlemen, really some of the early OGs of this show, and longtime members and two guys. I really, really love being affiliated and calling them friends and so. And. And we'll start with, uh, at the top here with Dr. Jim. Good morning, sir. Always good to be here with you and Brody, especially you too. Long time. Yeah. And, and, and Brody, good morning. And, And Brody, we're. I'm gonna. You know what? I'm gonna. I'm gonna embarrass you right off the bat. I was gonna do. Do it second, but Brody recently walked the stage. He is a high school graduate, so congrats are in order, uh, for Brody, as he is a high school graduate. Uh, I graduated about five years ago myself, Brody. So. What? No, I'm just a long time ago. But of course you posted a video. You got to walk the stage. I know you've. You've missed a good portion of your senior year. Am I right? With. With your epilepsy and, and, but, you know, put in the work. Right, And. And graduated. So kudos to you. Yeah, it's been a while. It's been a long ride, but, hey, we got it done. But now I'm excited to be with you guys and talk some sports cars. There you go. How are you doing, Brody? Before we get kind of just for those. I know a lot of people care. I'm. I'm doing better. You know, it's. It's an up and down road, but I'm doing better. Yeah. And you've done a lot with, with your ailment and bringing awareness to it, so I appreciate it. I'll put you on the spot. One last question before we get into other stuff. College or. Or taking a year off, you know, approach there. I'll probably be going to a local community college and do like an online thing for the first two years and then decide what I'm gonna do after that. Like Go for a master's. Or if I'll just be working, we'll see. Yep. Okay. All right. Well, you're young. You know, you got time. I know my son even took a gap year, but you're going right into it and full speed ahead, so that's. That's awesome. Again, congratulations. All right, before we get into. Go ahead, go ahead. You're not taking a gap year from the Hob Hobby, are you? Oh, no, no, no. That. That will never happen. Awesome. Well, congrats. You know, it was good to see and, you know, with everything you've dealt with and you've handled it with. With nothing but class and grace and again, put in the work. Right. You know, they. You don't graduate from high school without putting in the work, so. Kudos to you. Before we get into the. The. The nuts and bolts of our show today as well, it's. It's Memorial Day weekend. And, you know, someday, sometimes I think we forget, you know, you know, the meaning. We think of it as just an extra day off. I mean, not me. I come from a family where there's a lot of military. But Memorial Day, you know, the freedoms to get to do the hobby, to do shows like this and. And came from the sacrifice, the ultimate sacrifice of our great men and women of this country. So, you know, it's Monday, but I want, you know, with this air and Saturday before the Monday, want to take a minute. Take a minute this week, if not more than a minute, uh, take some time, uh, and think about those who are no longer with us, who, uh, gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy, uh, the things and freedoms, uh, that we have and get to do whatever it might be. Cooking on the grill, sorting your cards, spending time with family, whatever that looks like to you. So thanks to those who lay down their. Their lives. All right, with all that graduation, Memorial Day, uh, let's get, you know, Dr. Jim, you sort of got a. A new title, uh, with the, uh, upcoming card company, uh, called. Oh, yes, uh, I know, uh, Jeremy Allen is a part of Things. He. O o. If I'm not getting this title wrong, just kinda, you know, I know you don't want to spend a ton of time on it, but, you know, a lot of people are making comments. I figured were you being on today. Let's. Let's go right to the source. Kind of what it is, what, what your role is and all those details. It's a novel idea. You know, when something happens, why don't you ask the person what it means? There was a press release and before I even get started on that is that I am so sorry that the press release which I agreed to came out the exact same day that the Beckett media logo refresh was announced. And I, that was very unfortunate. I wasn't in any way trying to steal anybody's thunder. In fact, this isn't, I don't think it's that big a deal. Basically, I'd been helping these guys for almost five years as a, as a pro bono consultant when I help lots of people in the hobby. And so I'm an informal advisor to many, many companies, many non profits. So I'm so. But these guys in particular I've met with, you know, a couple times a year for almost five years. And then this, this when this year came around, they said, you know, we really need, it would really be helpful if we could say that you're our advisor. And I said, well, you know, I'm not, I just, I, I'm happy to help you guys. I help lots of people. And they said, no, no, no, we, we really want you to be an advisor. We want to get some PR value out of that. And I said, well, what do you want from me? And they said, we don't want anything different. I said, wait, you want, you just want a continuation of meeting, you know, a couple times a year to do that again? And they said, yeah. And so finally I said, okay, I'll do this. Well, this is the first time you've ever been an advisor. I said, no, I've been an advisor many times, but I can see that you're this company, this, this and it's not, it's not really, I wouldn't call it a card company. Yes, it, it has the capability of that, but it's, it's broader than that. So it's, it's a technology company and it does involve some cards and I've just enjoyed interacting with them about the, the future aspects of where the hobby could go. So if it was just a regular card company, that wouldn't have been as interesting to me. So I know I've helped them over the last almost five years and I look forward to helping them future. But you know, my, I'm wondering if we're going to talk about this on Hobby Hotline for longer than my advisory responsibility for this month because I basically, I had a 45 minute conversation last week with the, with the founder and that may be it for this month. So again, it's not, no money changing hands. He's, he's A friend. I believe in what he's doing and I want to be helpful and I think it could, it could, it could be really good for the hobby. So that's kind of my rule. I don't help people that I think I. Unless I think good for the hobby. So a lot of fun, a lot of energy, a lot of new approaches to. And I love that. So I enjoy working with it. Jeremy is not the coo. He's. I think he's the cco, which is the chief. I was off by a letter, but he's still a C. And yeah, but he's a lot of fun. And frankly, how I met these. In fact, how I met Jeremy, long time ago and how I met Scott, the founder were, was through a. One of my favorite employees that left to start his own thing more maybe 25 years ago. But a guy that worked for me for a long time was very entrepreneurial, and when it came time for him to go off on his own and he did great, great. So I've had a number of people that I hired that were entrepreneurial that I encouraged to. When it was the time to, you know, fly the nest. And so I met, I met Scott and Jeremy through that guy. And, you know, so, so that, I mean, that's, it's there. It's a small hobby, you know, John, and, and relationships matter. And so I already had some kind of relationship and now it's just, it's just a little bit formalized. If it's an hour a month, I'm going to make it the best hour that month that I can. And it's basically them calling me usually is saying, hey, we've got a problem with this. We're thinking about this. What do. And, and Jeremy's a seasoned hobbyist too. But I'm, I used to, I think entrepreneurially, so I'm enjoying it. And they are, too. Are they, Are they based in Dallas? Yes. I mean, that's a big deal. My, my pro bono consulting does not involve me jumping on a plane at my expense. But no, they're, they're. So they come over, they've come over a couple times a year. And the thing that was different in earlier this year, maybe January, February, they had a dinner where most of their team were there. And I, I said, okay, I'll come to the dinner. And I was impressed with the rest of the team. And so then I finally said, you know, it's. I shouldn't be withholding. You know, I, I am helping you guys. I do believe in what you're doing and if it's helpful for me to be listed as an. They have other I, I'm, I'm their third best advisor. They've got, they've got two other super sharp advisors that they've had and I met those guys and I thought well you know what this is, this is going to be a two way street. I'm going to enjoy this and I think I'm gonna, I'm gonna receive a benefit and give a benefit. So. Gung ho. There you go. And they're doing some exciting things. They're doing things that are not being done, and I have a chance to speak into that and help shape it for the good of the hobby. So that. That's worse. Yeah. Done a lot of stuff with tops the years at the national, especially, like you said, you're about to. You know, in a little bit, you'll be starting your. Your community college initially. Is working in the hobby something on the radar, or at this point, are you looking like something else in the sports field or you haven't even thought about. You know, it's not you. You got time. We'll start off with this one kind of a feel good story right as we see. I put it on the screen. This is the Judge. 2013 Bowman Chrome. Not the auto version, but the Refractor 101. Two gentlemen met at the Dallas card show, I think last year or 2024. And it was a young man, a younger man. I don't they didn't give his age in any of the reports. Uh, struggling with some disabilities and the dad but they were talking about vintage cards and the, the dealer who goes by Texas Card man as his, as his screen name made a you know, appointment to go over, look at what they had and this kind of was just in there and, and you know, along with the vintage cards and he I, the way the story reads, he kind of said hey would you take 25 grand for this? And I don't think the two gentlemen knew exactly what they had for sure. Probably would have took it but he's like no I'm, I'm not going to give that to you. This card's worth way more than that. And he sort of facilitated getting the card graded which you see I, I think it's a nine and then facilitating the sale which I believe was heritage and it went for 800 plus thousand dollars. So a nice windfall for, for that family who from what I read and accounts got kind of helped them out tremendously. That kind of money would help a lot of people and most people out. So just a, a kind of a cool story about you know, you hear a lot of stories where people get taken or they don't know what they have someone unscrupulous. This was sort of the opposite Dr. Jim. This sort of happened and it wasn't, it wasn't our brand Texas card Mace, Texas Guard dude. So I, I don't know. We love Brad. We love Brad but it wasn't him and I'm sure he would have did the same thing had the opportun arose. Do you know much about the parties involved or the story or is it, you know I heard the story, I heard the story but first let, let me just not let it lie that the, the logo refresh, they did come over and show that to me and I did approve. Not that they needed my approval but it was, I thought it was nicely done. And Colin Hudson, the new GM has been very clear that this is, they are on the move in improving not just refreshing the logo but refreshing the brand and building back better trust. So I'm, I'm happy about that. So that's a feel good story too. But the Aaron Judge, what with a guy with disabilities, the way I read the story it was kind of the dealer said you know hey this is a great card. Would you take 25,000 and then the D. And since that has been put out there I think the guy the, the dealer must said nah, you, you really don't want to do that. You. You need to put this up for auction. And he hooked him up with heritage, and he got a finder's fee or something from here. Yeah, yeah, he did get up, but I'm just saying. But you don't tell the story that you offered the guy 25, 000 unless it was not in jest, but just kind of, you know, not everybody knows exactly what everything's going to go for. If this would have been. Yeah. In 2013, could that have been a 25, 000 card? Maybe. Yeah. Maybe not. Okay. But in 2026, that's a huge card. And so again, all's well that ends well to give us. And it just seems like it went to a nice beneficiary for found money. I mean, this is real money, and it's. It's life changing for. For families. So I. I love the story. Yeah. Brody, any thoughts? I mean, you. You know, it's a crazy card. You don't have to be a Yankees fan or a judge fan to know the significance of the car. And here no one really knew where it was. Right. Or was it still in a. A sealed box somewhere? Now we know, like, it was pulled without the big fanfare, you know, when it was pulled kind of years later. You know, Brody, your. Your thoughts on. On this and a dealer, right, doing the right thing and like, steering the owner of the card in the right direction so they could get, you know, the most bang for their buck. Pun intended, I guess. Yeah. I love hearing that the dealer did the right thing because I feel like you hear a lot of stories and you just. There's sometimes, you know, you don't know if you could trust dealers sometimes that they want to do something like that. But I mean, it's also. It's just a great looking card. Like, I'm surprised it got a nice nine, too, Unless there was a scratch or something. I mean, looks pretty nice. Well, the way I read the story too, it said it was. And I. I don't quote me here, guys in chat room, but the way it made. It was written like it was kind of just in the box. I don't know if it was in a soft sleeve, a top loader, both loose, but it. It didn't specify, but the way it was sort of tilted, it made me feel like this thing was just sort of in there with the other vintage cards. I mean, and then thing was loose. That's pretty impressive to still get a nine. Yeah, maybe. Yeah, that's what I was thinking when. When I saw the grade. So, you know, it's a, it's a great. Like you said, Brody, it's a great card. A nine is a great grade. You know, we, we forget. Aaron Judge has been around a bit now, and so that Card's, you know, 13 years old this point. But it's just a good story where, you know, people are gonna. Maybe it's something they didn't realize they had and they were selling. It sounds like they were selling a majority, if not all, their collection. And this will just make that number a higher figure than they probably ever imagined to, to help that family out. You. Sometimes you hear these stories where it's the opposite. You know, I didn't know I had this, and this guy offered me this and took me, but this, this is the opposite of that. So. Dr. Jim, do you know, I, I think the last name of the dealer is Rolich, or I might roll it. R, R, O, H, R, L, I, C H. Do you know the gentleman by any. By any chance, or. No, not by name. I. I might know. I don't know. Okay. All right. I figured I'd ask just in case to give him a extra plug. All right, so let's, let's go to our next story here. You know, from a feel good one to a not so feel good one. Well, it recently came up in the past weeks. I haven't dived in on this myself, so I figured we'd take this show, Evan Brody, on as a kid, even though he's a young adult. Adult now. You know, we heard a recent story where a deal at a show was a registered sex offender. And it brought up the topic of, you know, safety for kids in the hobby and, you know, about doing. I've done shows. I know, Dr. Jim, you know, for. For 35 years now, maybe actually 39. I started in 87 with shows and, you know, I've always had to. But now there's some groundswell about should we, should promoters be doing more due diligence to who's allowed to set up and you know, be badged at the show? Does the response should it happen and should the responsibility fall on the promoters? I, I believe you've promoted a few shows in your day. I did it for a year or two way back when in, in the 90s. You know it, it was never on the radar then. But you know, Dr. Jim is someone who attends shows, has done shows as a dealer, promote them. Like what, what do you think here? Well, I think when a dealer, I mean a promoter has a brand, I mean we're seeing consolidation and expansion among some of the promoters. Kyle Robertson now has the Dallas card show in New Jersey. Front row is, is, has gone out of the west into the east. So there's some national brands and, and they ought to be, they ought to be aware of who they're signing up. It shouldn't be just taking money of anybody who shows up and said they're already asking do you have Pokemon or do you have sports cards? And they ought to fill out an application and ought to give them permission to do background checks and that's probably just good business because they're representing your brand. If something bad were to happen, it's almost like you're saying you can trust these dealers to the best of your knowledge. And so it's, it's not that tough to do that now. But again so, so that's on the promoter side, you know, on the kids side or the, the potential victim. You know there's, there's some Dallas non profits and ministries where if you want to tutor an inner city kid, you know, who's, you know, having trouble with reading and you want to drive to a bad part of town, you're not allowed to do that one on one. You can only do you first you got to be vetted and you've got to do it two on one. So it's it can't be one adult with one kid. So I'm just reminded that, you know, in the hobby, a lot of time, but if it's one adult with a bunch of kids, that's different than, you know, so I just think this is such a relational hobby. But there, there, there ought to be this prudence that, you know, you're, you're, you're making good decisions to not put yourself in a compromising position. That goes for the promoter, for the dealer, for the kid. I guess I'm getting on my soapbox here, but I don't want to see bad things happen. And there are safeguards, one of which would be to prohibit dealers, you know, from setting up. On the other hand, they could still come in. There's not going to be any background check for people that walk in. And so adults or kids, anybody ought to be aware that there are occasionally bad people out there and be, be, you know, have, and be careful about getting isolated. Couple comments here, but I want to ask Brody too, but yank me card. Steve says my understanding is most promoters do have background checks. I don't find that, but maybe it depends where he is. VVV Shaohen says our Central Texas New York show promoters are not showing any discretion. They just want table occupies. I did a show, I don't do it anymore. I did a show north of here, north of Syracuse. And I'm not saying the promoter was, isn't a nice guy, but he. I didn't even get asked and I know others that set up at the show, they didn't even ask for a tax number. Now I have one which I would have provided upon, but he wasn't even asking for tax numbers. So it was a pretty safe bet that people were setting up at the show who weren't even like legal to collect sales tax and pay tax and shouldn't have really had a table, to be honest with you. And that's dangerous because obviously as a promoter you're responsible for, for that you could. That'll fall back on you as well. So, you know, I don't know, like, I'm in teaching. I definitely had to have a background check. Matter of fact, I couldn't start like I was hired, but I couldn't start until that was cleared. So it actually caused a slight delay in my start date five years ago. So. And obviously working with kids, you know, there should be background checks. I don't know what they cost. Is it, is it, is anyone out there, like, is it cost prohibitive where a D A promoter you know, if he has to do 40 background checks, like that could be. Unless you pass that cost on to a prospective dealer wants to set up the show. You know, I guess there are different levels of background check. Like just go going on Google or just going on to like a sex offender registry and typing in a name, assuming it's the real name. Like, I don't know all the details involving. Involving that. I only did promotion of shows myself for probably like 15 months. And then it was just so much work and hassle. I just said I'd rather just set up and let someone else do the work again. I was in the nine, you know, different error. But this stuff's not new, you know, so all those questions I wonder would cost and is that a prohibitive. But Brody, as a kid, right. I mean, what are your thoughts here? I mean, I mean, you're, you're probably taller than most dealers at this point. But all joking aside, you know, you've been, You've been in the hobby for years. Even as a younger kid, was it something that you worried about or thought about or you were just so locked in with cards? And now as a young adult. Right. You know, graduated high school, what are your thoughts about, you know, keeping the hobby safe? Yeah, I don't think it's really that crazy to do background checks. I mean, you know, if a business owner hires an employee, they're going to do a background check and a promoter is hiring somebody to set up at their table, you know, hiring for a weekend. So I don't think it's that crazy to make sure that there's nothing bad going on. And I think in terms of kids, I mean, I've been doing this if anyone in the chat. Oh, sorry. Go ahead, John. Let me speak to that a little bit. I mean, number one, just the price. Yeah, yeah, go ahead. As a promoter, you just keeping. Having an app that they have to put something down that they can. They could not tell the truth. That happens a lot. But just in the app, if you're, if, if the potential dealer is giving the promoter the saying I agree to have a background check, even that is a deterrent that some criminals are going to say, hey, I don't. I'm just not even sign up for that show. Okay, now where the, where the promoter the. To do a background check on one person is expensive. To do a background checks on a hundred is not okay. If you did all your dealers, there's online services that you can get a subscription. You know, whenever I go in there, I Want to check on somebody, it's always like they want to charge you 50 bucks, but then you can get as many as you want or something like that. I think I just want one. I just want to find out who I'm doing business with. So, yeah, if a dealer, if a promoter made it a. A part of their business, there are. There are services that drive the price way, way down for an individual thing because they're just searching the web. Usually. They're not hiring a PI to track any. And like I said, the bad guys don't like that. If they know they're going to get a background check, then they just either need to fess up or. Or move on. And if they're bad guys, I hope they move on. Well, just. Well, just bad guys ought to get. Yeah, the punishment ought to fit the crime. I would just like to add, too, like, kid for kids. Like, be smart, you know, obviously with everything. And, like, if you're doing social media and stuff like that. I mean, I've been on social media for eight years. Not many people, like, even know my last name. So, like, really, in general, I think it's just something. Don't tell strangers things that they shouldn't know. You know, the obvious things that you would do that if a random guy came up to you at the park and asked if you wanted candy, like, you know. Yeah, yeah, A lot of it. Like you just said, Brody's common sense. Right. You know, like at the shows I set up at, there's teenagers, and they're usually by themselves, but, you know, they're older. You know, more decision making, obviously be different. But then you see younger kids, 5, 6, 7. Some of that's on the parents, too. To be near, though, you know, don't let that 5, 6, 7 years old just go to the other side of the room by themselves. Potential. Not saying anything could happen. Well, could happen. That would happen. But, you know, you are like, you know, just as a dad. My son's older now, but even when he was younger, you know, depending on his age is how far I let him stray from me as he got older, maybe that. That. That square footage number went up as he became a younger adult and a teenager. So some of its parents. And I see these young kids sort of running around the show almost unattended and having fun. I don't, you know, which is good to see. But, you know, still, sometimes I'm like, where's mom or dad? Like, this kid's very young, and I don't really see they could be nearby but I don't see sort of any, any direct supervision. So always, you know as a dad I always maybe I notice it more so being a dad. But you know. Like you said Dr. Jim, there are cost effective ways and especially if you're a promoter. Now I'm thinking about this. If you're a promoter who's doing shows on the regular and you got to pay a one year fee, whatever that might be, I don't know to do background checks on your dealer then I'd be all for that. But I do think you know Dr. Jim, like you said some of the it does fall on the promoters right. So you know, you know they have a responsibility for the safety of everyone. You know we see cameras now at a lot of shows because a lot of the theft to get capture potential thefts or wrongdoings on on video. Right. That's obviously a deterrent to if someone had ill intentions with children but you know if, if the background checks are not cost prohibitive then I, I'm all for them and say we should be doing them. And as someone who sets up at shows my by all means Background check. Me and everyone else I'm setting up with. Even if you're. If you're not setting up and you're wandering around, you know. You know, I've. In my podcast several times in the last month, I've made references to Disney World because I'm actually going to Disney World with my grandkids and kids in the near future. Not going to say exactly when, but I'm going. And I've said I'd rather be at a card show than being at Disney World. That's how much I love being at card shows. But my point now is that it's. It's just as safe to be at a card show for a kid as it is to be at Disney World. Bad things can happen at Disney World and do. And bad things could happen at card shows and they generally don't. But you're not unsafe at a card show, but safe at Disney World. That Brody's saying you got to be smart as a kid. Yep. No, it's true. A couple comments too here guys. And. And we'll probably move on here in a minute. Brody, Mookie says he heard your middle name is Danger. I don't know if that's true. Orlando, our very own Orlando says some pair. This is true because I know. I know firsthand. Right. Some parents just drop their kids off at the card show and then pick them up later and not good. Yeah, I think. I guess it depends on the age. If they're a teenager, that's. I think that bothers me less. But if they're like 10, 11, 12 or. Or even younger than that, which is no way. That. Yeah, that. That's sort of. That makes me nervous. And I, I wouldn't do it. My son was always with me like I was there as someone in the hobby. But if the parents aren't hobbyists, I think you got to be teenagers to be kind of dropped off and then and picked up later. File 5 Ball said this is true. Only half the people in the world has common sense. I agree with that for the most part. I like to think the number's higher. Maybe it is. Most small local shows, everyone knows each other. Club show need to be. Have. Be a member to have a table. We donate monthly to different charities. Love the chair. Charitable aspect. And you're getting some Disney world advice here. Dr. Jim. Take him on the carousel. Progress. My favorite ride. It is. And there's. As someone who just went last month to Disney World myself, it is good ac so if you're in a hot Day. There are certain buildings that are perfect to cool off, kind of refresh, and then get back out in the hot, hot sun, if you will. That ride is old. That thing kind of debuted at the New York, New York World fair. I think 64. But I could be off on my ears, Brody, since that the comment was made about Orlando saying, you know, kids get dropped off. And I know that's very true, and I'm sure. What age do you think. And maybe you can put yourself in here. Could you. You think it's okay to be dropped off and then just be picked up when you're done? What's that age to you? I mean, I'm sure, like teenager, 14, 15. But honestly, like, looking at this from a different point of view, this hobby is the best when you're doing it with other people. Even if your parents thought a joint introduced it to them and, you know, everybody's safer that way. But honestly, like, this hobby is best when we're all together talking about it, introduce it to them. There's so many friendly people in this hobby. There's no reason to do it by yourself. Yeah, great advice. My son is not as active as me, but a little bit. I try to get my wife into it, Brody. No such luck. She doesn't want anything. She supports what I do, but she doesn't want to learn. So there's. There's confirmation on my year. I. My memory's still hanging on for dear life. But, yeah, it's a 64 world fair, so that's where that carousel of progress, you know, debuted now at Disney World. Helicopter. Parents are the worst. Kids, uh, need to learn. I know all about. As a former varsity high school baseball coach and varsity high school football coach, I know how parents are. And it's funny, some parents can be hands on. On. On so many things that are probably. They need to be less hands on, and then other areas where they need to be more hands on, they're not. So, again, that's where the, you know, common sense comes in. And Mookie reminds us where that state where that World Fair took place, which was right across from where Shea Stadium is. So. And, uh, good comment here from sports guru. Said he met Mookie in Orlando at the Strongsville show. Great people. I second that remark. And yes, that flushing is where our. Yep. Where the US Open tennis is. And one of my favorite guys I got, you know, back in the day, John McEnroe, uh, New Yorker himself. Go ahead, Dr. Jim. Just to pick up on what Brody was saying that when we go to the national in a, in a couple of months now, they're going to be some parents with their kids and in many of those situations the parents are going to grudgingly be there because it's their kids hobby. In some other cases it's going to be the kids grudgingly there because it's the parents hobby. The ideal situation which makes you not be a helicopter parent is if the parents are loving it and the kids are loving it and they're doing it together. That is the best. Yeah. And I can tell you, Dr. Jim, you know someone that does shows at least once a month, if not twice a month. Right. I'm seeing more families attending shows where they're all active and participating. That's nice to see. I'm seeing, it seems like I'm seeing more of it. Not to say it wasn't there before, but it seems like it's becoming more of a, a family tradition if you will. And I'm also seeing parents in the situation you brought up, Dr. Jim, where maybe it's the kids more in the hobby. I am seeing more parents like will ask me questions or you know, this or that. They're, they're taking at least taking an interest in their kids interest and, and trying to learn more. So that's always, that's always refreshing to see as well. So that's a good segue, Dr. Jim, with your comment about the national. Because put this up here. Countdown. We're 60. Yeah. From 67 days from the time of this recording. So a little over two months. About, about nine weeks if you will. So 67 days and bad number. Way to go. Oh you know what, it just happened. I didn't even think about. You did that on purpose. I went. I like to take that much credit, Dr. Jim. I did. It just happens to show today away from the Wednesday start of, of the national. So you know, again Brody, it's in your backyard as it is a lot. Chicago, you know. And I always get asked is like from, especially with people who know I've been a bit and they haven't or this is their first one like when should you start like getting ready. And my answer is always the same. Right. As soon as, as soon as you can. I know people who are making plans for the next one the minute the one they're at is over as early as they can. I know some hotels don't open up reservations that early. But the, I think that the answer, the easy answer is the sooner to the, the better for me too. Sometimes I drag my feet on like making all those reservation flights. If I'm flying in hotel, I'm a little. It's funny, the older I get, I've gotten worse at that and better at other things. But I always seem to figure it out. But one thing I do and then is, you know, this about this time, like two to three months from the show, I kind of slow down my buying of cards. And what I mean by that is for my like personal collection, like setting up at shows, I might buy inventory. That's for the showcases. But as far as cards for me, like you see all around me, I sort of two or three months out from the show, I kind of slow down doing that with the anticipation to have more funds with me to buy those kind of cards at, at the National. I'll turn this to the chat and to you guys. Dr. Jim and Brody. Do you have any like traditions leading up to Nashville? You do this when this or, or not necessarily. Go ahead, Brody. Well, I, I think I like all your points too, John. I don't really worry about the transportation stuff as much just because you know it's a 35 minute drive. But I agree with your points on it. I think especially too and I mean, I think it depends kind of how you are as a collector. Like when I go to a show like the National, I, I know some people and I think you're kind of like this too. You have specific cards that you're kind of looking for where I'm kind of like I'm just looking for anything and if something pops out of a showcase that I like, I just grab it. So I think it's kind of, you know, we're 70 days away. I'm gonna say 70. We'll round up and say 70. I think if you're kind of person that, you know, I want to 63 Roberto Clemente. I don't know, you know, look up what that's worth, you know, get a good idea of what's a good price. Listen, for those that don't know, Dr. Jim has been to every national from the first to the last one and then a schedule for this one. When do you start thinking about like the next one? Like what? Or are you always thinking about it the day after the one before? No, I mean, I get ready. I mean I, I will say this, John, just so people know, I get my hotel and air as soon as possible. There's they won't let you reserve too early, but as soon as the, as soon as they release the rooms, I'm first one in as much as I possibly can. I get the airfare taken care of. And so I'm set on that. In the meantime, to use your baseball softball analogy or golf analogy, is that I'm getting ready for the big game in Chicago in late July. And so when I go to the Dallas shows or Rich's show in a couple of days and other shows that I would go to, that's my batting practice, that's my driving range. I'm staying in shape so that I can still hit the fastball. And so because. Or you could say those are regular seasons. You could say those are regular season shows. And at the nationals, the world, it's like that Brody does. I know it's great for you being it's like you said, in the backyard, 35 minutes away. But do you, you know, it's again, it's your backyard. Do you like that? Obviously it's convenience. Or do you like it when it's like in other cities too? Oh, you know, it's obviously nice being right here. You don't have to worry about as much and then you have more money to spend at the show because you don't have to, you know, book, hotel, all that stuff. But at the same time, what is this? We got like three years, four years in a row that it's at Chicago three Second of three. Like by this show and probably, definitely by next year I will probably want to go somewhere else for it just because, you know, like to change it up. Like going from Chicago to Cleveland was nice seeing a different place, but I mean you can't really beat being 40 minutes away. No, I, I was 10 minutes away from me from getting to O' Hare Airport, so. But still the other thing I do in preparation and it really does start right after I make some notes after last year's national of you know who. And so I've got to have a list going into in 67 days who I must see. There's some people there's, there's some tables I'm for sure gonna hit. Some people I'm definitely going to see. And then there's a bunch of other things that I'd, that are stretch goals. I'd like to do this, like to do that. But the musts. I kind of have a list of the. The who and the where. But I'm gonna, I'm gonna make sure, I'm gonna have dinner with certain people, going to make sure I hit certain tables on certain days. I'm going to make sure I stop in, maybe record a podcast with a person or two. So I have some. Again, I'm not looking for a full time job, but I am on the clock when I am at the National. Yeah, that's a great, that's a great piece of advice too. Dr. Jim. Right there, right. Is whether you're there for a. One day, a couple days, the whole shebang, five or six days. You really do need to sort of have a game plan like hey, I'm gonna, you know, and there's events as you just pointed out. Dr. Jim too, after the show. Right. Most of the time the. I always try to catch a, a sporting event, whether it be a, you know, usually a baseball game. Chicago, whether it's Wrigley or, or I still call community park, Rake Cellular or whatever, it's who who paid the naming rights. But like last year I went to a White Sox game at, at their stadium. That's the first time I, I've been to that stadium. Cleveland, when it was there a few years back, I went to, to the Guardian where the Guardians play. That was my first time there as a baseball fan. It's always cool to see new parks. I think I've been to probably slightly less than half of them at this point. I don't know if I'll ever get to all of them, but it's an opportunity Right. There's so many things to do during the show, obviously post show, but you really need to sort of map that out. I mean, I guess you could fly by the seat of your pants, but man, it's a lot less stressful if you sort of have a game plan and things change, right? Someone has to cancel or, you know, this or that. I, I get it, but sort of having some sort of semblance of a game plan. I know with Brody, with you doing a lot of the events for Tops back in the day, you had to, like, I know your mom and dad helped you out, but you had, you know, you knew you had to be here at a certain time. I had to be here at a certain time. And obviously you don't want to be late. So being organized is important. Like you said, Brody, I'm one of those guys. I'll bring a list of seven to 10 cards I like to add to my PC. I know I'm not gonna, number one, be able to afford all of them, or number two, get all of them. So if I could put a small dent, two, three, four acquisitions out of that list of 10, to me, that's a successful show. But I'm probably over organized other than the fact that I drag my feet making my, like, reservations and all that stuff. But everything else I'm, I'm very organized with. So that's a, A great tip and be better than me. You know, it's funny because my wife, guys will ask me, she doesn't call it the national. She doesn't know, she just calls it the big show. So she'll say, john, have you made all your plans for the big show? And you know, the one, you know, usually the answer is no. She goes, when are you. Are you going? And if you are, when are you gonna do that? I'm like, I gotta get go. So it's usually my wife that, like by asking that the light bulb goes on, that I, I get in gear and do that. It's not that I don't want to go or it's just that I, for whatever reason, I drag my feet. But I use, when I, when I get airfare, hotel and a rental car, I'll use like Orbits or Travelocity or Expedia and sort of package it together. And I've gotten great prices, including people telling me, like, you're paying less for your hotel than, than I am. And you. And I booked it, you know, four months or five months before you. So, you know, I, I guess I've been lucky for dragging my feet that I'm still getting fairly, you know, reasonable deals, if you will. The travel challenge in Chicago is not outside the show, it's inside the show. The, the layout is, is really tricky in the sense it's not a rectangle. It's. I've said it's kind of like a baseball feed. The northwest corner. Yep. Kind of like home plate. Then you, the old, old, the old school, you know, old guard or between first and second base and PSA is out in right field. And then there's an upper deck out there and the autographs are in center field and you know, the singles club is in deep left field. So it's. If you figure out where things are and the, it's tricky because you, you can get, you not dizzy, but you just get disoriented because the, even, the, even the numbers of the tables, even, that's a little bit tricky. So. And upstairs is going to be way bigger than it was. Yep. And spread out. So that's going to be another thing to try to handle. So the good part about Chicago is that it's probably similar to last year. The bad part is last year was very confusing. Yeah, it's the, it's the one national. I'll, I'll self admit I get lost. Like how do I get out of here? Or how do I get over there? Or where's this, or where's this kiosk? And like. And even after a few days, I mean I'm a little better by 33 or 4, but I'm still potentially like getting lost or not, you know, having trouble getting into where I am because like you said, it's not just a rectangle. It's got some like cut ins and, and it goes this way and you go into one room and like, you know, you gotta go to the other. And so yeah, it's, it's, it's confusing. Brody, being it's your home show in a sense. Like, is it, you know it like the back of your hand? No, I mean I used to back when there wasn't, you know, our like Dr. Jim said it, upper deck and all this extra stuff going on. But I don't know, I always like the red carpet room because you get so, your feet get so hurt during the day. Red carpet room, that's, that's the spot. Yeah, yeah, no doubt. I, I've taken advantage of that as well. So let's see. Yeah, go ahead. Dr. Food is a problem because of the line. Do not have lunch at noon. Have lunch at 10 o'. Clock. Here's what I do. Dr. Jim. I said this on my show. I don't, I'm a, I'm a lunch skipper. So I have a backpack. I got some granola bars, some beef jerky. What do they call it, you know, granola in general. Just a badger granola. Yeah. And I'll eat, I'll, I'll, you know, go over into a corner and grab a couple pieces of whatever and eat that. So I skip lunch nine times out of ten. And then I have, we, I have plans for dinner somewhere like every. Whether it be like a party that's put on by a company where food provided or we make reservations for those that don't know, we usually do a hobby hotline dinner where those involved in the show can get together and, and that's become a tradition. So I don't, as you can see, I don't skip dinner. But I do, believe it or not, I do skip lunch and just kind of pick and snack and, and that sort of thing. And it just, it saves me more time too if I was to leave, either leave the national or you know, take an hour during the national, a full fledged lunch where you sit down. I just look at that as like I lost time and it's already, you're already trying to cover so much in the time you're there. And then, even when, even when it's over, I'm like, I, I think I missed this section or I didn't do this or I didn't. Like you said, I didn't get to meet this person, which I was hoping to meet in person. So I kind of skipped lunch just with the, not that I'm not hungry, but just for the time factor and I'll just kind of snack on stuff real quick and then not miss dinner. So want to throw that in? This is make me car see. Next show is in Phoenix promoted by front row which is a he later on says it's an 800 table show. That's a. That's a big show. Sports Car Sports Guru 17 also says I never been a national. Thinking of doing the Detroit national in 2028. Maybe hit a Tiger scene too. Isn't it next year in Detroit or am I wrong? The. The 2028. No, 2027 is the third year in Chicago. Okay. All right. So well let's, let's get, let's get way ahead of ourselves. I mean what do you. It's never been in Detroit, right? That will be the first time ever in Detroit. No, Detroit was the second one ever and then hasn't been back since. I don't know if it did. There's at least that number two, I think. But I don't know if they had one more after that. Detroit was one of the major cities of the hobby back in the 70s and the 80s. Not so much now. Yeah, Orlando says I don't have a cardless. I just see what catches my eye. But I do plan with friends. Stuke says I'm a grazer. I shop around. I shop once around the show then go back to key tables for him. This. You must have stole my thunder, Scott. This is what I do. Or at least I try to do. I try to like make the rounds on the floor, take some notes of where I saw cards I was interested in in their prices. And then by the second day or you know, sometimes my per my first purchase is the second or third day. One one year was like not to the fourth day. I was running out of time. File five ball. I'll. I'll acquiesce to your expertise here, Jim. Did the national star in California, wasn't it on the East Coast. First one was in la. First one was in la started by the three. Three, you know, legendary guys that were, yeah, hobby icons that started it, 1980. Yeah. Abe in Vegas says the new vendors are in the bullpen, probably aka that, that second four, which is, as Dr. Jim pointed out, will be. Have more dealers. There'll be more dealer tables at this year's Chicago National. So, you know, so we'll see. I, I was thinking that the Detroit national was next year. So I was, I was been enlightened but I'm sort of looking like I like Chicago, but I will say Detroit is drivable for me. So Chicago is 14 hours up by car. Detroit's a little over five and that's sort of five or six hours now. Guys in my age is like my driving stamina limit. If, if it's probably between five and seven hours, I will drive. It's past seven. I'm definitely, I probably to fly, you know, but when I was younger, man, I could drive for like double digit hours without even Lincoln. But not, not anymore. So, so here's a question for Brody from Avon Vegas. Does Brody attend other shows throughout the year at Rosemont? I'm assuming like Chicago Spectacular. Are you going to those as well? Yeah, I usually try to go to both. They usually do one in March and one in November. I usually try to go to both of those. They're fun shows too. I mean they're decently sized. They got, they got a lot of good autographed guests there. It's still pretty nice. Yeah. Some more tips when it comes to eating. Even Vegas says I pack peanut butter and jelly and make sandwiches and eat those throughout the day and only really have a big dinner. So unless it's in the evening, I need to get my spot for trade night at the Hire. So yeah, I'm a snacker too. Like I said, just for lunch. Mookie's taking it old school. He keeps a bag of 87 tops. Gum handy for when and you don't have to chew it. It is, it just sort of disintegrates. You wince and I guess it'll expand in your stomach and it'll keep you until dinner time. Stukes off. Says I eat a good protein breakfast, fig bars and have a good dinner. So I'm not the only guy that skips lunch. Apparently become sort of, you know, the, the kind of the trend eating food is not skipping lunch. Yeah, I don't like skipping lunch. I just do it for the sake of time. And it's not like I'm not eating at all. I'm just eating whether beef jerky or granola and that sort. So there's the answer. Disneyland Hotel 1985. So here's a question, Dr. Jim. I don't know, you know, it's been a bit from Ava, Vegas, he says. Is there hotels with easy access to convention? Troy, it's, it's a brand new convention center. I've never been to it, but I'm sure when they build them, they, they make sure there's plenty of hotel stuff around there, so. But again, John, don't wait till last minute. Like I say that I get my reservations in like October. It's like nine months before when they release some room, so. And Detroit will probably be well attended as well. Yeah, Yep, no doubt. Five, five balls like me. Five hour drive, maybe only one pit stop. That's, that's where I'm sort of at. And as we kind of wrap up the show here. Great. Ray Ray 22 says gonna look for some 84 star rookie cards. So I have a list, you know, don't get me wrong, I wind up buying stuff not on the list. The list is just sort of a guideline of stuff, stuff I like to acquire. But I, I think, I guess we'll kind of close with this, right? The more prepared you are and organized, the less stressful it is and, and you know, less stress usually equals more fun for most, so. And so there's the countdown where it's 67 days away from this year's, uh, national. And that sneaks up on you, you know, next thing you know, you're in, you're a month away. And then you start getting Brody, you know, we'll kind of. We. I didn't really get Wendy. Especially when it's in Chicago. Because it's in Chicago. Do you, I don't want to say take it for granted, but are you thinking less about it or. Not necessarily. Probably a little less than I would if it was somewhere else. Just because it doesn't like if it's somewhere else. It's more like vacationy kind of in my mind. But here it's just kind of like it's right over there. Yeah, I love the venue. The only thing I don't like is, is it's not drivable. So you know, with flights it's a little less money for cards. And towards the end, you know, I still enjoy it. I still gonna get some stuff, meet people, go to dinner, all that fun stuff. Right. It's, it's, you know, I call the super bowl the hobby. It's just so much entailed there and everyone's there for the compass. Probably the most people in the hobby at one one given time. So I circle that much every year. Those dates, which are very similar each year works out for me with my job. It's summer school, so it's not during the regular school year. It's easier for me to miss a couple days and, and it's so Dr. We'll kind of go around. We did a little bit overtime. Uh, what's any, anything you want to plug, uh, as we get ready to say goodbye? No, I just, like I said, I get. I'm hitting the Dallas shows every two months. That keeps me in shape for, for, for being at the national. And I'm really, really looking forward to it this time. It's going to be great. I look forward to seeing both of you guys for sure and many others. And we'll have to look up to Brody. I think last year might have been the first year that happened. And, and so I'm sure the, the difference is even more. And I. Plus I'm shrieking at the same time. So that distance will get you even, even greater than. And Orlando says everyone should attend a national at least once. Brody, anything you want to plug or you got going on Excited for the national. Can't wait.
