On today's show, we're going to talk about how to become a top hobby flipper using repeatable sports card strategies. I'm going to tell you my hobby reentry story and why it's relevant. Today we're going to use insights from our player rankings@nooffseason.com to talk about whether or not football buying card season is over or ending. Actually, here at the end of June. And we're going to talk about whether or not it's time to start buying Victor Wembanyama again as his prices have started to drop since the NBA finals loss. We've got some NBA draft and NBA player movement to talk about. Are there really selling markers with all these players being moved around in the NBA off season? And the key theme for today's episode is repeatable strategies versus non repeatable strategies. This past week I was on family vacation and when I got home, I knew I would have a USPS bin full of mail. Now, some of that mail is cards that I have ordered, plays that I'm making. So a lot of times I'm receiving mail from premium members. Sometimes I'm cracking slabs for them and then submitting to grading companies. And sometimes I'm just sort of inspecting the card and then sending it into grading. Either way, a lot of mail coming back from vacation, as you all can imagine. And hopefully you guys have had a chance to take your family vacation already. Or hopefully you have one coming up. As I know you know, the end of this week is the 4th of July. So happy early 4th of July. Happy summer vacation. Hopefully you guys are all enjoying your family time as well. So this mailbox full of mail and this USPS mail bin full of mail again, you know, it, it reminded me of something. It reminded me of when I re entered the hobby. And what I mean by re entered the hobby is, you know, I collected as a little kid, right. And that was late 80s, early 90s. And then once I got into, like, middle school, I was like, I don't know, you know, I'm gonna keep my old cards. I'll keep them, but, you know, I'm not. I'm not gonna, like, focus my time and energy on. On continuing to buy sports cards and collect them and really care about them. Well, at the end of 2020, as I was going through my storage unit, having come back to visit from Spain, my family and I were living in Spain, I came across, you know, part of my old sports card collection. And this kind of really reignited my passion for sports cards. I had. I had been. I had worked in the NBA, I had worked in fantasy sports, have a huge passion for fantasy sports. And when I opened, you know, this old box of sports cards, it had Barry Sanders cards in it, it had David Robinson rookie cards in. Had Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie cards in it. And I started to look up the prices of these cards, right? And I found a huge variance in the pricing. I found. I found out about grading. You know, I looked. I looked on ebay, and I saw, okay, what are these cards that are in these. These cases, these holders, these slabs? Well, they're graded cards a lot of the time. And so I started to become fascinated about the price differential. And I learned about sold prices versus listing prices, right? The listings obviously being what the seller wants to get the card for, and the sold prices being what they actually sell for their actual value. And after spending weeks researching, basically just ebay and a little bit of, you know, some on Facebook, some on Instagram, some on Twitter, you know, trying to figure out, like, how big is this hobby? I realized that there is a sports card market, and I became fascinated by that. I became fascinated by the data, the numbers, the opportunities, the fact that you can increase your card's value by a huge multiplier through grading, the fact that you can see an increase based on player performance, the fact that you can buy low and sell high, everything that we talk about on the sports card strategy show, so this. This took about a month for me to figure all this out. Now, obviously not know all the details and everything like that, but just to. To start to understand what this landscape looks like took about a month. And what would ensue for the next year would be just a massive experimentation, right? Like learning by doing. And one of the first things I started doing was just buying cards. Now, now I'm back in Spain. It's January, February 2021. Horrible time to buy cards because the market had basically all the card prices had increased a ton due to more and more people coming back into the hobby. And there was a huge sports card boom at the time. So I'm buying and I'm experimenting and I'm having these cards shipped to my in laws address because we didn't have a United States address at the time. And I was back in Spain. I knew I was going to be visiting probably later in that summer. So July of 2021. Well, fast forward to July of 2021. I enter my in laws house and my father in law, who I love, we have a great relationship, is pissed at me basically because he has gone to the mailbox every single day and pulled out all of these cards and these envelopes and boxes and put them in the bonus room. In Tennessee they have bonus rooms, they don't really have basements. So his entire bonus room was full of my mail. And I didn't get to this mail until like late June around this time. I'm recording this show on June 29th. Didn't really get to that mail until, you know, a full six months later. So that would be exactly five years ago. I would say exactly five years ago. Today it's possible that I was walking into my in laws bonus room in Tennessee, coming home from Spain with my family. And just almost the entire bonus room, a huge corner of the bonus room full of boxes, envelopes. These are singles, these are sealed wax. These are some sealed wax from Panini, some sealed wax from Tops, some sealed wax from Facebook, Marketplace, from ebay, a bunch of singles from ebay and even Amazon. Like I was experimenting like crazy. I was buying cards from everywhere. I was buying cards that I had as a kid. I was buying cards that I thought might go up in value. At the time it was like Lamelo Ball and Anthony Edwards rookie cards. You know, it was like Ronald Acuna Jr. Even Magic Johnson and you know, just some, just this plethora of athletes that I wanted to dabble in. And I wanted to see like what would work and what wouldn't work in terms of grading, flipping, how can I make money doing this? Well, what ensued was obviously a disaster because ripping open all of the wax, basically I got almost nothing. I mean, I would say I spent close to $10,000 just on wax alone and probably pulled one card of value of all that wax. And it was a Diego Maradona contenders Optic Auto. And you know, Maradona obviously has passed away. So it was. And he's one of the best soccer players of all time. Of Course. So, but at the time, what's interesting is PSA was also shut down. A lot of people don't, don't know this because they've come into the hobby since then. But PSA was shut down at the time. You could submit cards to grading at a 100 to $150 per card level, but all of the other submission levels were shut down. So I actually had cards that I had a friend of mine submit to PSA and I think at the time it was like 15 a card to grade the cards. They were sitting in PSA backlog. So I knew I was going to get those back at some point. I just didn't know when. And there's probably a couple hundred cards in there from my childhood. So the, the experiment had like several prongs to it. It had this grade every single card, well, not every single card, but grade a couple hundred cards from my childhood. It had buy a bunch of shit in the first like six months of even really realizing what this hobby was or could be, including wax, including singles and everything like that. And then another prong was after I opened up all that wax and opened up all those packages at my in laws house. I graded a ton of cards with SGC because SGC was open. Many of you remember this, some of you don't, but because PSA was shut down, SGC made a huge push to try to acquire our business. And they did a pretty good job at the time. You know, they had fumbled the ball about a year or two prior to that, but they did a pretty damn good job in the summer of 2021 with turnaround time. So we were home from Spain for about a month and I got a bunch of my cards back right from SGC. So that was my big project in summer of 2021. It was go through all the shit that I had shipped to my in laws house. Grade a bunch of it with sgc, get those cards back. When I got those cards back, I shipped them to my at the time PWCC vault, which is now fanatics collect. And then my plan was to sell them off through the PWCC vault using my own ebay account, but shipping them from the PWCC vault to the buyers, the ebay buyers. It was funny because not to sidetrack the entire story, but in this whole timeframe PWCC you used to be able to list on ebay, well they got kicked off of ebay before they became fanatics collect. And part of the reason was because they had their own competitive marketplace so what I was doing is I wasn't selling on PWCC. I was selling on eBay. But then using PWCC's services, I would, you could ship your card wherever you want. So I would ship my card to the buyer, to the ebay buyer from my pwcc account. So I executed that strategy for about the next year before I came home again to the United States. And in that year, I learned a lot. I learned about which cards don't make any sense to grade because they're never going to have the upside. I learned a lot about not ripping wax because most of the wax you rip is shit product. And even the good product that you rip, you have basically no chance of getting anything good unless you're super lucky. So I knew that I was going to lose a ton of money and I knew that was going to be the process. But born from that process is where we are now. Where we are now@noallseason.com and the sports Card Strategy show and where we have been for the last several years. 20 since, I would say since 2023-2023-2024-2025 and 2026. So. Obviously Giannis, Giannis traded to the Heat. That was a huge one. And you know, we've talked about selling markers for players being, you know, one of them being when they move teams, especially for like a big name player. There's a couple of different reasons for this. You know, logically you have a whole new fan base now interested in that player. You also have that player in the news. It's been proven that when a player is in the news, their amount of ebay searches increases. And because their amount of ebay searches increases, there are more eyeballs on their cards. With more eyeballs on their cards, there are more bids on the auctions, more buy it now best offer transactions made. And that is why you typically will see at least a slight bump in players card markets. However, I want to really dig into some things here and talk about whether or not Giannis, Lamello, some of these other players that have moved teams via trades this off season, whether or not you should sell their cards. And and one thing I always tell the premium members@noallseason.com is look at what you're into the card for, right? And what is that card selling for? And if the card is selling for I would say 30% or more than what you're into that card for in ebay auctions, then it's a decent time to maybe auction off that card because in theory then you can get, you know, 30, 20 to 30 ROI on that card, which is pretty darn good. However, it always depends on your scenario and it depends on what the card is because some cards will spike more during the hype lead up to the NBA season when you start to see a guy like Giannis in a Heat uniform or maybe Lamelo ball plays really well in the opening week of the NBA season in the Minnesota Timberwolves uniform with Anthony Edwards, IO de Sumo, Rudy Gobert. Well, when we look at their data over the last 14 days, you want to look at things like what Giannis or Lamelo cards are up by certain dollar amounts. Okay, so, for example, the card that's up the Most for these two players over the last 14 days is Giannis 2013 Gold Standard Rookie Jersey Autographs BGS9.5. It's up $720. Now, there's not that many of that card, so chances are you guys don't have that card. So part of this conversation is a little bit irrelevant because, yeah, some people could make $720 minus the eBay fees, which is great. But how many of you are there now? The next card. LaMelo Ball 2020 Prism Red to out of 299, PSA 10. This is a pop 88. It's up $245. So chances are, you know, the 88 people that have that card might not be listening to this show. The other thing, too is because each of those cards are kind of at this. The intersection that I talk about desirability and. And accessibility. Great holds till the start of the season. LaMelo Ball 2020 Prism Silver PSA 10. Little bit more common card. Pop 444. It's up $235. Okay, so if you're into that card for the $355 or less that it started at 14 days ago, before he was traded to the Timberwolves. Probably a decent card to auction off. Could it go down over the next couple of months? Absolutely. Could it then go back up again in October? Yes. But will it go above the 590 that it's selling for right now? Not sure. So that could be a good card to sell pop444 right now. But the point is, as you go down the list, there's not that many cards for these guys that are up by more than $100. Which. Which tells me to tell you hold generally until October, when typically the prices for basketball cards for the top players start to go up based on the interest that people have in the start of the NBA season. Today's June 29th as we're recording this, we talk a lot about selling football cards in mid to late August during the hype ramp up to the start of the NFL season. I think in last week's episode I talked a lot about when you compare a hype rise with a performance spike. It's even better when you compare a raw to grade or a regrade crack and submit with a hyper eyes and a performance bike. It's even better. And I gave my Paul Skeens example of that. So many of you may be getting cards back from grading companies over the next couple of months leading into the football season. You might see that you get the grade that you want. Or even if you don't get the grade that you want, you see that the hype rise starts to increase the prices for certain players you might want to hold a little bit based on the last discussion. The last discussion was okay, well yeah, Giannis and Lamelo were traded. Their cards bumped up a little bit, but did they bump up enough to really move your needle to want to sell? As we approach the NFL, the start of the NFL season in the next couple of months, you're going to find yourself in a similar scenario. You're going to have cards that you bought during the off season or that you held from last season or that you're getting back from grading. And you're going to try to make the determination, when do I sell? Now, again, using our Sell Alerts feature@noallseason.com is going to be the best way to help you do that. But just in general, is football buying season over? I like to look at data and the reason I asked that question is because as we update our player rankings@noallseason.com I'm seeing the price increase of football cards quite a bit as we near the end of June and the beginning of July, which tells me that the overall football card market, the macro football card market, is seeing a price increase. Does that mean it's time to stop buying football cards? Maybe. If you've already invested a lot in football cards this offseason. I personally have already invested a lot in guys like Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, a little bit in Jalen Hurts, I've invested in J a lot in Jaden Daniels. I've started to invest a little bit more in Caleb Williams. And there are some, there are, you know, some other guys, but primarily those have been my focus. Patrick Mahomes Patrick Mahomes has been a big focus of mine. And I'm asking myself the question, is it time to stop investing in these football cards? Meaning, you know, are the prices getting too high to where I would actually make anything back in my selling marker of the hyper eyes in August? Now, a lot of the names I mentioned are good enough names to hold maybe into September to see if there is a performance spike, because they're probably not going to drop drastically if there's not a performance spike. So pairing the hyperize with the performance spike for the names that I mentioned is a very realistic possibility for me. So because of that, I'm thinking probably have until week two, between week two and week three, to liquidate these cards for a profit. But what I found when I updated our player rankings this past week@noallseason.com surprised me a little bit in that the amount of football car, the amount of top football cards that are down in price right now is very low for June 29, which basically means football card prices are rising already, which is interesting. Now, you can draw your own conclusions from that. You can ask, you can ask me whatever questions you want@nooffseason.com ask. I'm happy to answer on our premium podcast and, and dive into it. The other side. The other, the other takeaway that I got from updating our player rankings, which some of you have probably already seen if you're looking at various data tools in the hobby, is that Victor Wembanyama's prices have started to come down pretty significantly from where they were during the NBA Finals. Now, part of that is because they were a little bit too high during the NBA Finals. I mean, we all should have been selling our Victor Wembanyama cards leading into the NBA Finals and during the NBA Finals that was, that was pretty clear. Have they come down enough to start buying into him again? Well, I think pretty, pretty darn close. Especially because we're in a situation where we're about to enter the NBA Summer league coming out of this very exciting NBA draft that was this past week. And we're about to start to see a lot of these young players from the NBA draft and maybe some second year players that are very intriguing. They're about, just about to start seeing their, a bump in their card prices during the NBA Summer League. That, that, that is historically a trend that should continue to carry through this year. NBA summer league performers see card prices increase quite a bit. So point being is Wemby's prices should continue to drop over the next month. And I think between now and the end of the national is probably going to be a great Wemby buying window online. I personally am not attending Fanatics Fest and I will be spending the amount I'm going to do. I'm probably going to do it on a sports card strategy show episode coming up where I am actually going to spend the amount of money that I would have spent going to Fanatics Fest. I'm going to spend it on sports cards on ebay and I think Wemby is going to be a huge chunk of what I end up buying this month online. So I think it's, it's, it is probably time to start looking at buying Wemby again. I want to talk about repeatable strategies versus non repeatable strategies and how to become a top hobby flipper. And there's no accident in me using the term hobby Flipper because I'm about to reveal to you a tool that we are launching as part of no offseason.com called Hobby Flipper that premium members of nooffseason.com will have access to this week as part of their premium membership. But first let's talk about repeatable strategies and non repeatable strategies and I'm gonna give you some specific examples. So some social media posts and I'm not trying to pick on these particular content creators. In fact, they're definitely friends of mine. But here is a market Movers post then and now and it's, it's basically, you know, they do a great job on their social media account, of course. But I don't want to say that this post is misleading, but I think a lot of times what happens is that new hobbyists coming into the hobby will, or re entering the hobby will look at these posts and think, wow, the market is crazy. I need to do what's being done in this post. And they'll either mistakenly try to buy this card or a different Giannis card now and they won't go through the process that we go through@nooffseason.com and so like I'm gonna give you, I'm gonna break this down as to why you should not necessarily pay attention to these posts as like anything that could be a repeatable strategy. And it's, it's pretty simple as to why. So like this card in this post, Giannis 2013 Panini Crusade Blue PSA 10 on May 12th. The point of this post is to say, wow, look at these Giannis cards that went up huge since he was traded $305 in May 2026, $500 in June 2026 after the trade. The problem with this and the reason it's not a repeatable strategy is because this Crusade Blue card is a pop 100. So maybe, maybe some of the 100 people could have made that amount of money on this card or more, but that's only a hundred people that could make money on this play. So it's just a little. I just don't love it. And I want to point that out now. Another card in this, you know, that made a lot of money is this Giannis draft selections from 2013, card number 15 in PSA 10 from select. Huge increase, right, from $290 in May to $549 in June. But this is a pop 60 card in PSA 10. So there's 60 people that, that maybe could have made this amount or more on this card based on. When they, when they bought the card. So it's just, it's. It's misleading. Yeah, maybe. I think, I think it, it points people in a bit of a wrong direction. These aren't cards that make sense to go out and buy because in a lot of, a lot of cases you can't buy them. These are entertainment posts. And so these are not repeatable strategies. That's the overall point. Another, Another good example, perhaps an even better example. And this sports card investor account is Lamina Mall. So we're all, you know, there's a bunch of World cup hype right now, right? And, and actually, for the record, like, Lefty and I did talk about, like, and I got asked the question on the premium pod, what soccer plays would make sense at all leading up to the World Cup? And a lot of people, and this was several months ago, a lot of people were like, you know, any US players or any sleepers or this, that and the other. And I was just like, if you buy anyone, you should buy Lamina Mall, because he's probably going to transcend over the next couple of years the World Cup. Like, he's just, he's the guy. And yeah, the World cup will be a marker for him potentially. We've seen Messi, we've seen Mbappe, we've seen Holland have like huge games in this past World cup and their prices have gone up a little bit as well. Here's where this is. Like, this type of post kind of drives me nuts. And because it's not a repeatable strategy, it's cool that his 20, 23 tops chrome UEFA Champions League. And we're live on match day as Doug reaches for a Buffalo wing. He's got it. Oh, and he's gone for a can of Pepsi too. What a finish. There's no doubt about it. It just tastes better. Match Days deserve Pepsi. No one goes to Hank's for his spreadsheets. They go for a darn good pizza. Lately though, the shop's been quiet. So Hank decides to bring back the $1 slice. He asks copilot in Microsoft Excel to look at his sales and costs and help him see if he can afford it. Copilot shows Hank where the money's going and which little extras make the dollar slice work. That's cool. But there's only one of this card. So like one person could have potentially made money on this. Another example is actually that's that card's a pop two. So two people. Just to be super accurate, two people could have potentially made money on this card. This one optic gold power one of one PSA 10 that's a one of one bought for 53.7k last sold for 219.6k. Cool. But like one person not a repeatable strategy. His 2023 rookie kaboom in PSA 91 9k before the World Cup 23.4k during the World cup pop 76 so 76 people. Even the most the most achievable card in this post, which I thought was interesting. The 2023 mega cracks La Liga EA Sports PSA 10 this is huge, right? Like it was a 290 card before the World cup in the last couple of years. So yeah, you could have bought it. You could. You could have potentially sold it for 18k profit during the World cup this past month. But it's a pop 261. Extremely hard to get a PSA 10 in that card. Not only that, but extremely hard to find any of the 261 that exist available in an auction where you could have bought it for the 290. So not repeatable strategies. That's, that's the point here. And then finally, World cup hype is real. Sure. I mean you see a pele sale for $54,000, a Lamina Mall non rookie kaboom for 16.6k. No, there's no comparison here though. These are just sales. These are just saying these cards have sold. Messy Optic Black Pandora from the 2025, 2026 road to the World cup in BGS 9 sold for 16,000. Messi Kaboom 2025 PSA 10 sold for 15,000. I mean, there's, there's nothing here as an insight at all. And so that's. These are not repeatable strategies. These are just facts. But there's no actionable insights given. There's no. This is what you should do based on this data, or here's how to reverse engineer this data. There's none of that. And so that leads me to how do you build a repeatable strategy? So from a raw to grade upside and downside standpoint, you're not just getting the data that you're getting from market movers. When you use market movers or you use card ladder, you have to go do all this math yourself. At hobbyflipper.com you pull up a card and it's telling you is there an opportunity right away for that card from a raw to grade standpoint? Not only that, but what about from a regrade or as we like to call it, crack and submit standpoint. When you pull up a card, say in a PSA 9, it's going to immediately give you the BGS 95 potential win and potential loss for that card. And it's going to give you whether or not there's an SGC 10 or an SGC 95 potential win or loss for that card. It's also going to give you whether or not There is a BGS 95 to PSA 10 Potential win or loss for that card. So there is the crack and regrade element to Hobby Flipper. Another another thing about Hobby Flipper is that, I mean, you all know that I'm obsessed with data. If you're a new listener to the Sports Card Strategy show, hi, my name is Paul Hickey. I use data to help you make money flipping sports cards. And one of the things that we've talked a lot about at nooffseason.com@sports card School and on the Sports Card Strategy show is selling, you know, a lot of content creators, hobby content creators talk about like I ripped this or I ripped that or I bought into this break and Pulled this or whatever or like the market movers and you know, sports card investor posts I showed you a minute ago where it's just like this card's up this amount. Holy crap. What an amazing hobby. A lot of content creators go in that direction, but they don't go in the direction of like it's really hard to sell these cards. How do you actually execute a sale? So what we have here at Hobby Flipper is we have a couple different things. We're aiming to be the most actionable analytics tool in the hobby, meaning we have an auction sale price deviation heat map. So it compares on the card details page for every single card that we track. Not only is there actions around should you grade at sgc, psa, BGS or cgc, but when you scroll down to the bottom of the card details page, it actually shows you when is the best time, day and time to end your auction for this particular card. So nowhere else in the hobby can you get this. So in this case, this Victor Wembanyama card, if you end it for me local and it's going to be your local time. So my local time happens to be central time in the US So if I were to end this, this data is telling me based on all the sales, the historical sales of this Card, Thursday at 11pm I'm likely to make 52% more than the average of this. So there's no other tool that does this for you. It also gives you the ability to report any potential inaccuracies that you see in the sales data. You can report them directly to us. Another cool feature is top ebay sellers. So when you're on the hobby flipper.com platform, which again all no off season.com members have free access to this. If you have your subscription on auto renewal, we want you to be able to not only have these insights as to when and how to sell your cards, but also what ebay sellers are the best ebay sellers to potentially buy these cards from. In this case, RLOP underscore 33 for this particular card is the top ebay seller of this card. Now how did they get to become the top ebay seller for this card? Well, in the last selected time period, 90 days or in the last year, this seller had had at least two or more sales of this card for the lowest average sale price compared to the other sales of this card. So it's giving you the idea that you can buy this card for the least expensive price from the top seller and that top seller in this case is Rlop33 for this particular card. Now that's on a card by card basis. We also have top overall ebay sellers. So these are called our seller rankings. So seller rankings@ Hobbyflipper.com give you the sellers that have had the most amount of cards with the lowest average sale price for the card compared to the overall sale price. So in this case, DC Sports 87 is the number one seller on eBay because they have 557 cards that have sold on average for less than the average of that card, all on ebay in the last 365 days. For example, Drake May Prism Green 2024 RAW sells for 27.82 on average from DC Sports 87, which is less than the overall average of that raw card. PSA is number two. Probestein number three, Quick Consign number four. MC Sports cards number five. Murazond number six. And it just go, the list just goes on and on. It's an infinite scroll to see the top ebay sellers and what cards are the best to buy from them based on their average sale price being lower than the average sale price on ebay. We also have added better inventory and flip management@ Hobbyflipper.com so for example, on the inventory side of things, right now@nooffseason.com there's an inventory tracker. Right now@nooffseason.com there's also a separate sell alerts feature. You've heard me talk about this. Well, now you will all have the ability ability to have a much upgraded portfolio and flips management and sell alerts through the hobby Flipper platform as part of your Nooffseason.com membership. And again later this week you will start to see this. But the portfolio management allows you to add a card that you currently hold and you can either add it from our database or add it manually. The cool thing is if you add it manually, it becomes a suggested card for me to add to the entire platform. Either way, it's going to track the sales data of your card and give you a sell alert. Once you have sold it, it becomes a flip. And now in flips, you can see your total net profit, your total revenue, total cost, total net profit, and on a flip by flip basis, how well you have done. And so the other main part of the flips in the portfolio feature is regrading. So you have the ability to add an original grade and a current grade. This puts you in a position where you can track the cards that are currently in grading. Now, no other inventory management tool that exists allows you to do that. And we have added that where you can see, okay, these cards are in my current portfolio ready to sell in in a particular grade or these particular cards are in grading and it also tracks the potential profit if you were to sell them now. And that is also part of the sell alert. Now we also have the ability to convert the grade. So when you convert the grade you are essentially tracking and helping us track the success rate from not only raw to grade but also cross regrading. Not necessarily cross grading but regrading. So we call it crack and submit. So Hobby Flipper will essentially be able to provide all of you publicly data on the success rate on a card by card basis and a grading company to grading company basis, say the PSA 9 to BGS 95 rate for a particular card, the BGS 95 to PSA 10 rate for a particular card, and so on and so on and so on. So the data is going to flow very very actionably from hobby flipper.com to no off season.com to the sports card strategy show and you will be able to manage your portfolio and your flips and not only that, but you will be able to compete against all other flippers.
