"I don't even want to meet him!" -- On in-person autographs & card show concerns!

In a giant hobby, in a giant country. There's a collector Mike of Junk Wax Hero and a collector Greg of midlife cards on opposite coasts. And here they combine to talk about those cards. Hey, buddy. Hey, buddy. How's it going? It's good. Just tell us about your Internet issues that you have right now. Bro. Bro. I'm so frustrated. So we're recording this on Monday, and I'm supposed to have a live stream in, like, three hours. Yeah. And my Internet went down midday yesterday. Wow. And it's been down. And it's been down. It's down for the entire community. So everybody who works from home, everybody who streams tv, Netflix, nobody has anything. Like, we have, like, home video cameras. We. We, like the video cameras aren't. Don't connect because there's no way. I mean, there's. There's like our. Our thermostat is connected to our phones. Like, everything goes through your. Your Internet now. And our Internet has been down for 24 hours. So I'm. I don't know what's going to happen with this live stream tonight. I've been working on it and planning it and talking about it for a week, and now I look like a big phony. Yeah, well, you are, but now you look like one, too. Well, I'm in the. I'm in the backyard on cell connection, which is why I might get patchy a couple of times. Yeah, I think this works for the podcast, you know, this one time. But I certainly would not hold a live stream like this. I hope you're back up by next Monday. Who knows? I mean, it is really difficult to provide Internet service these days in 2026. Yeah. There are so few companies that know how. A couple things I wanted to talk about here. First of all, I got over on Twitter, auburn35, who most people are familiar with, tagged me in a link to a post on collectors.com a forum. And somebody linked to my article, my video yesterday, clearing the Bases. And they said Junk Wax Hero is his name. And he has a lot of. I wear socks with sandals energy, but does a good job overall. I mean, we. I know. How. How would you take this? There were kids that did that in high school, in elementary school, and we. We called it the Ninja Turtle look. Because I. I think, like, maybe turtles feet look like that. Like, where they've got, like, the one little. I don't know. I don't know how I would take it, but I think you're great. So that's all that matters. So I have. I have Only worn sandals one time in my life. I hated them with a. Really? Yeah. Oh, I. Hey, I. I need to have socks and sneakers on at all time. Except when I'm in my house. I need to have socks on in my house. Yeah. I won't go outside without sneakers and socks. Never. I've not worn flip flops my entire life because I missed that day in elementary school where they teach you how to walk in them. I tried walking in them one time, and I was like, these are terrible. I would never wear these. Do you ever go to the beach? Not if I can help it. Hate the beach. Okay, well, there you have it. And then somebody responded on Twitter and said that he doesn't understand why I don't have a sponsorship with Zenni Optical, which is a glasses company. And I feel like it was an insult about my glasses, but he wouldn't explain what's wrong with my glasses. I love your glasses. I think they make you look smart. I mean, if you didn't have the glasses, I'd be like, this guy's not smart, but he's smart because of those glasses. Yeah, look, you don't look smart at all now. You don't look smart at all. Nope. Smart again. Yeah, See, it's not just a look. The glasses actually make me smart, too. Well, I could see that. Yeah, I could see that. So we're. We're recording here on July 13, two weeks from Wednesday, we'll be heading to the national, which feels crazy if. Like, how do we even get into July? It. Every time I look at the calendar, I'm like, oh, wow, it's already July 13th, and we're going to be at the national in a little over two weeks. Are you. Are you excited for the National? Yeah, I mean, I love the national because it's a museum and a shopping spree and a friend hangout all wrapped into one. So the national is great, but there's also so much stress involved. Like, what if my flight is delayed? And then, you know, you. I actually have direct flights this time. But, you know, there's. There's always. What could go wrong? Because I. I live my life expecting everything to go wrong. Yes. That's anxiety, Greg. Yeah. And so. But I'm very excited. There's a lot of. There's a lot of people that I like that I don't get to see very often, and. And I get to see them. Those people then. But, you know, I also. I don't really like being away from, you know, my family. Like, you know, I'VE got two daughters and a wife, and I feel like I'm supposed to be here to take care of them. So when I'm not here, I always kind of have that. But, yeah, I mean, it's the biggest card show of the year. It's. It's a lot of people that I like, and it's a lot of cards that I want, so I'm very much looking forward to it. But it. In fairness, it does come with a little bit of stress. Now, do you have any. Any particular plans or targets or items that you're especially like, I won't come home from the show unless I have this or this, anything like that in terms of cards or like, people that I see. I mean, take that. Let's say cards are there. Are there cards that you have to land while you're there? No, no, I don't. I try not to go with a list. I mean, I know the cards, the types of cards that I want for my collection, and it's vast. There are thousands of them that I want and need. Of course, I don't need any cards, but, you know, when I see them, I'll know, and I'm not. I don't have a small list because I'll walk around for two days at the show, and I could see 300, 400, 500 cards that are in my budget and that I want for my collection. And it's just a matter of narrowing it down to what fits what my mood is. I like George Costanza dresses based on mood. I buy cards based on mood. So. Okay, but take me through that a little bit. Like, the mood of, like, you. You go, you know, I keep thinking more about that, Steph than I do about that, Pedro. Or is it like. Like, how do you actually narrow it? Because people ask me this all the time. How do you decide what you're going to buy next? And if it's rare, it's. The answer is it became available and it won't likely be available again. If it's not rare, then I tend to put it off. Yeah. So it depends on, I guess, the real deciding factor. For me, factors are price and the condition of the card. And I'm extremely picky. The card has to be well centered. It has to look good, and the price has to be within my range, and that's hard to come by. And so I'm very, very picky. And so if I see a card, let's say a Tony Gwynn 1983, tops, autographed card, I want it to be dual graded. And I don't care about the grades at all. I just want it to say 1983 tops. Tony Gwynn at the top on the, on this, you know, whether it's PSA or CGC or, or Beckett. And I want it to look good and I want the autograph to look good. And then it has to be within what I have figured out to be a good price range for that card, which is tough. And it really restricts what I get. And that's why there's hundreds and hundreds of cards that could, I could buy and I'll only end up with four or five. Does that make sense? And, and then will you walk up to it? Are there times that you'll walk up to a table and walk away from that table and go, no, no, no, this one I can't walk away from. I have to buy it now or is it are most of the time, do you think on it and if you go back and it's gone, oh, well, it wasn't meant to be. Yeah, that's a great question. I used to walk away like if, if. I'll give him an example. I bought my Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 upper deck autographed card, PSA 8, autograph 10 at the national three years ago, I think maybe two, but I think it was three years ago and he had it priced at 500. I offered 400 and he came back at 425. And I was like, no, that's too much. And I walked away. But I couldn't get it out of my mind. And I went back and I was like, okay, let's do 425. And I'm thrilled. I still have that in my collection. But I've learned since then that if you're close and you really want it, just get it. Why, why haggle? Why walk away over such a small percentage of what you're willing to pay? Yeah, I agree. And that was a question I was going to ask you is, you know, a lot of people talk about the national tax and if you look at a comp on a card that you want and say it's $1,000, is the comp in that range for that card with that eye appeal and you see it at The national, it's 1100. Will you pay that because it's there in hand, you don't got to get it shipped. You like it, it's done, or do you hold out because you're not going to pay a national tax? No, I'll Pay it to some extent. You know, I don't want to overpay if, if it's, if it's common like the Griffey Upper deck autograph. That's a very common card. And at the time it was comping at like 400. And so I felt like, well, I, I'm offering a very fair price. And he came back at 425. It should, should have been. But I was still fairly new to going to big shows in the national. Should have been easy. I've got the card in my hand. I don't need to pay shipping. I don't need to worry about anything. I've seen it. This dealer is trustworthy and it fits everything I want in a Griffey rookie autograph upper deck card. And so, yeah, I'll pay a little bit extra now. Although three years ago I wouldn't have. What about you give me an example of a card that's a. Not an autographed card. That's on the list of 5001961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain portrait not in action. Okay. Yeah. Love that card. One of those is going to be available on the Midlife card show. In fact, beautiful two. If that happened. If that happens tonight. There is one of those. There's some bangers. I. Again, if this ever happens. Okay, so let's go to that card. So say you find a nice eye appeal 2 or a 3. I know you like low grade, high eye appeal, but let's say it's in a CGC holder. Would you hesitate at all or would you be just as happy buying that in a CGC holder as a PSA or sgc, I'd be just as happy. I would take the CGC discount and I'd be thrilled about that. Now people say, well, if you want CGC to be valued at PSA, then you shouldn't take the discount. Well, yes, but that's just not the reality that we have right now. We have the reality that CGC isn't worth the same as a psa. So I would be happy to take the CGC discount of roughly 30%. Is. I'm, I'm guessing somebody can feel free to correct me in comments, but they're, they're, they're going for a fair amount under. But if it were, if it were a beautiful, like an insanely nice wilt 1961 FLIR, I would pay, I wouldn't pay PSA prices, but I pay closer because those are hard to come by. Really nicely centered. Yeah. Just in case anybody's keeping track at home. It's, it's starting to rain on me now as I'm outside. It is literally raining. Really weird weather because it's, it's in the upper 90s, it's like 98 degrees. It's very humid right now and it's raining. But I say, you know what? Nothing is going to stop me. No Internet, no problem. Rain outside, not a problem. I am a soldier and I will, I will battle through whatever is required. Okay, so let's go down this road a little bit more. What if it's a BVG? 61 FLIR Chamberlain. Great eye appeal at PSA Comps. Are you buying that card? BVG was graded many years ago, right? I mean, is anybody grading with BVG still? I don't even know if PVG grades anymore. I know Beckett grades, but does BVG grade? I don't know. I don't know that either. And I, I wonder, I don't know a whole lot about bvg, but do they have a good reputation for grading vintage? Are they, were they good at authenticating the cards or telling if they were? That's a good I, I. Well, let's go down that road for a second because my buddy, he has long said that Beckett does a good job grading and has done a good job grading of vintage cards. But then our buddy, John Wade Boggs fan, I don't know if you saw his video that he posted recently, but John was collecting cards in Beckett slabs for a long time and he's now gone full to PSA and he's decided to start crossing over from Beckett slabs to PSA slabs. So he sent in several cards in Beckett slabs. He cracked them and then sent them to psa. And the first one came back because it was at a faster thing because it's a higher value. And it came back. It came back men sized. Yeah, yeah, that's. I, I feel like, and I have no evidence behind this, but I just feel like you see more of that with BVG than you do the other top notch graders. You know, you don't see that a lot with even just Beckett bgs. You don't see that a lot with sgc. You don't see that. Obviously you see it some with PSA because they're grading two and a half million per month, but there aren't as many mistakes. It feels like there are more mistakes with BVG than there are with others. Yeah, again, I think, I think that's probably anecdotal, but at the same time. I kind of feel that way too. I don't know that. And that's my concern for buying a card in a different holder is for whatever reason, it's not like it's deserved that PSA is trustworthy. I mean, they've done a lot to prove to maybe not be trustworthy, but, but the industry, the, the, the collective community seems to say, well, if it's in a PSA holder, then all's good, but if it's in any other holder, well, we don't know if it's trimmed. Right. According to what psa. It's weird. Yeah. And psa, no, they, they've authenticated plenty of trimmed vintage cards too. They all have. Because in a lot of cases it's very difficult. It's if not impossible to tell in some cases. So let me ask you this about the national autographs. Are you an auto imperson, autograph guy? I, I know a little bit of your answer because you talked about it on an episode. But tell me about when do you look at the autograph lineup? Do you buy autograph tickets for in person? I love in person autographs and I have, I have hundreds of in person autographs from both TTM and Mail in signings, but I have never, other than the Keith folk that I got at Fenway park for free. I have never done an in person signing at a show or anything like that. Because at the National, I think you're going to wait hours. Right. Isn't the line super long at the National? Plus, like, Pedro Martinez is the one I would really like to get and I think he's charging $179, which feels excessive to stand there and waste a good chunk of my day, which is limited to just pay $179 for a Pedro Martinez autograph when I can mail it off to a private signing later on. Is it more special if you get it in person than if you mail it off and get it mailed back? Probably, sure. But I mean, it's not like I'm going to stand there and talk to Pedro. I don't even want to talk to Pedro. I just want the autograph. I would much rather just mail it off, have no interaction. I don't want to interact with anybody ever. What, you don't even want to talk to Pedro? That's a good that. I mean, that might be the title of this episode is I don't even want to. I mean, me neither. We have something to comment. Never meet your heroes. You've heard my story about Meeting Ted Williams when I was a kid. I know. Yeah. See, I met Ted Williams and he was fine. I. I met him and, and he was, he was fine. He wasn't, he wasn't chipper and eager to start up conversations and pinching my cheek or anything, but he was fine. And I met Mantle and I met Clemens and I mean, there was, there was a. I mean, I did a lot of autographing in person at shows because that back then it was affordable. I mean, I paid 39 for my Ted Williams autograph in person at the Sacramento Community center card show. And I got my Mantle. It was 20 or 25 in person. Still have it on the ball. Yeah. And it's worth about. Yeah. I mean, now let me ask you this. So I know that you're introverted, which you, you, you know, you use the line and it's a perfect line. That introverted doesn't mean you don't like people. It means that it's exhausting to be around people. There are some social events that we'll be doing at the national the. Now tell me about your level of excitement or, you know, where, where are you at with all that? Because there, I mean, I have like, I'm like, booked up like pretty much the whole week. There's something going on. Yeah. So Wednesday I'm getting lunch with a former coworker who moved to Chicago and I'm very excited about that. We've never actually met in person. We worked remotely together for years. He was living in Europe and then he moved back here after leaving the company we work for. And so I'm getting lunch with him. I'm actually getting going to a White Sox Yankees game with a high school friend that night, Wednesday night, and his two sons. So very excited about that. Thursday, going to the YouTube get together, which I'm very excited about because I love seeing all my fellow youtubers and I love meeting viewers and commenters and anybody who just wants to come up and meet any of us. And the first time I met him, I was walking up to Mookie Chilson and at The Cleveland National, 2024, and Chris had, like, his arms were full. He was like this, just carrying boxes of stuff because he was set up. I think he was, like, sharing a table or something at that National. Yeah. With James. Mookie walks. Yeah, that's right. It was with James. Elite Hunters. And he says, Mookie says, oh, Chris, here comes the tickle monster. To Chris Sewell as Chris. Because Chris could, you know, defend himself. And Chris start laughing, and, and then Mookie can start a conversation with anyone. And then I walked up, and I didn't even realize he was talking to Chris Se. And, And Mookie says, hey, it's. It's Chris. And it was one of the few times I was a little star struck. I was a little star struck. And I was like, I was like, oh, hey, you know Chris. And, And Mookie's like, he's got a channel, too. It's midlife sports cards. And Chris says, very politely, he says, oh, yeah, I really like what you're doing there with your channel. It good. And I'm like, this guy doesn't know my channel. Like, there's no way that Chris se knows who I am. And, but it was just like, you know, the, the relatability, you know, and, and you could just see it. I, I, I feel like I'm a good judge of character in person. And immediately, Chris is the kind of guy that you just go, he's a good dude. And so very, very fun meeting him for the first time. And, yeah, I was a little starstruck with Chris. He was, I. He's a big deal. And, and, but again, yeah, as always, if you are looking to sell part or all of your collection, he's doing big things, he's expanding his business. He's got a great team around him. The new website looks awesome. So really happy to call him a friend. And A partner. Yeah. So that's. I'm very excited about that. Then some Friday night, I go to the dinner that you're helping kind of organize a little bit and that. I've got a lot of anxiety about that because it's a lot of people I don't know, and it's a lot of people that I'm convinced. Anyway, we'll save that for. For another time. Anyway, I. Yeah, I'm nervous about that. And. Okay. I. But that's just the way I am. That's a me thing. And. But I'm excited for it, too. I wouldn't have agreed to go if I didn't want to. That's. I'm very much a. I, I'm not. I will say I will not go to anything that I don't want to go to. I never feel pressured to go. If you had said to me, come to this thing and I didn't want to go, I would have said, nah, no thanks. I'm all set. It's. It's. It's one of those things where whenever there's a get together, and this particular one is a press. So Thursday is the YouTube Get Together at Shoeless Joe's, and Friday, our buddy Bob, who we met at Strongsville, is putting on a little private gathering where he was able to get a facility and. And invited some people. And, you know, last year I went to something that was put on by Ash, and it's. It's definitely. Those things are out of my comfort zone, too. And. And that was one of the hardest things in. In my book, which I haven't talked about in a while, but in my book, there was. The first year I went to Strongsville was 2024, and the title of that chapter is the Leap of Faith. And it was a leap of faith because it was like, so outside of my comfort zone. I literally flew across the country, landed at an airport. A friend who I had never met in person picked me up at the airport and drove me 30 miles or whatever to Strongsville, 20 miles to Strongsville. And then I. I go into the lobby, and I had never met Chris from Missouri in person, or Darren returned to collecting, or Mike Moynihan or any of these guys. Theo, you know, John. No, John3D didn't go that year, but I had never met any of these guys. And so it is a little bit weird. And for the people out there that are listening and they say, I don't know if I want to go to the YouTube get together, because it's It's a little bit out of my comfort zone. Maybe you're a little introverted. The thing that is really striking about any of these sorts of things, any of these sorts of gatherings is the people in this community are truly kind individuals. They're very welcoming, they're very including. And you know, when I went to my first YouTube get together, I was like, I showed up like an hour and a half late because I was like, this is gonna be weird. But then you get there and you immediately feel comfortable because everybody's so nice. And then you start recognizing people and you're like, oh, that's that guy. And that's that guy. But, but nobody's, nobody's like that. It's not, it's, it's not. Everybody's just a very down to earth person. And I can genuinely say that it's, it's way more comfortable being at those events once you're there than what you anticipate leading up to it. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. My first one, I just hung out with Eddie, Eddie's Cardboard Chaos, Sammy Thunder. I'm going to miss somebody here. Dom Steven Sports Cards and Picker Jim. And I was convinced I'd never, I'd never heard of John Mangini at the time before. And I thought that he was like this, this YouTube God because he was being followed around. I thought he had an entourage. All these guys were following him around and they seemed to be idolizing him. And he was holding court and he was just this. And I was like, I got to, I got to subscribe to this guy and I've been subscribed to him ever since. And of course that's, you know, that's kind of the way he is. He's just so charming and people want to follow him. And that's, that was exactly my very first feeling about John when I first saw him. I was like, who is that guy? Pretty accurate. Yeah. People. Yeah, he's, there's a reason that he's got a popular channel. You know, he's a very confident guy. He's a very intelligent guy, well spoken guy, knowledgeable. And, and it's, yeah, it's definitely fun to see people in person. And I always am trying to figure out like, who's. Is there anybody that's not in person the way that they are on their channel? Like, is there anyone where there's like that disconnect where you never know on video and they post a video of themselves? Like, what are they actually like in person versus the real life version? And that was one of the things about that first Strongsville trip, because it was. I went to lunch with a bunch of guys. I sat down at the end of the table near. Sammy was near me and Darren was near me, and Petty was near me. And I was like. The thing about it was, I'm yet to find somebody who's strikingly different in person than they are in camera. Like, they're. They're. You. They just are who they are. They are. They're. I don't go, well, he's not like that at all in person. Like, I don't get that at all. Even the times I've run into, like, a Jeff Wilson, you know, is. You see him and. Because, you know, I know that Jeff is a polarizing guy to some. And some people that are listening to this really like him, and some people don't. They think he's good for the hobby or bad for the hobby. And I've never had a conversation with Jeff, but I've definitely crossed paths with him and been near him at. At the national before. And he's. He seems like the same guy that's on camera, to be honest with you. He just seems like. Like there's no phoniness. Like, sometimes you'll hear about actors, you know, that off. Off camera are one thing and on camera there's something else. And you're like, oh, you hate to hear that. It doesn't feel like that with, with the YouTube thing. What about Sports Card Radio? Because you, you know those guys, you've met them several times in person. Are they the same in person? No, they are. They're not the same. Have I not talked to you about this? Are you. Are you, like, serious or. I. I'm not sure what I've said before. So there's. Yeah, so I used to watch them a lot. 2022-2024 ish. And, you know, I saw them have this young guy on. They interviewed this young guy. He just kind of came on one day and they were so insanely nice. And like, I was like, okay, this. This is who these guys are, and they're playing a part all the other time. I was convinced of it at that time. Playing a role. I believe that to be true. I first met both of them at a card show in Sacramento about two years ago, and I didn't really know of their channel. I had seen a couple of episodes and I was just looking at their table. They were set up with cards out and stuff. And I bought like. I bought like, some top loaders from them or something. And they're like, ah, just take an extra one or something. And, and the voice is what got me. I was like, gosh, I feel like I do I know you guys from high school or something because I grew up in this area. And they're like, oh, we have a, we have a YouTube channel. And I was like, really? I go, what is it? And they're like sports card readers. Like, oh, yeah. And they were like sheepish about it. And, and Ryan especially, he's. He's actually really kind of shy in person. He's really kind of quiet and soft spoken. And, and, and Colin is the brother who's always talking about his watches and his golf and stuff. And he's, he's a little bit more outspoken in person. But. And I, I then, you know, have talked to them at multiple shows since then. And, and I'll say, hey, you know, and, and in fact, I got them in contact with Petty. Petty's been on their channel several times and I went up to him because Petty was a commenter and he was always, you know, chat and stuff. And they're like, this guy, you know. And so I was at a show and I was like, hey, I go, hey, I can get you in contact with Petty. So I got Petty on the phone, like on speaker, and I handed it to Ryan and then they talked and they exchanged numbers. And then Petty ended up going on the channel a few times. And like, they, they're like, I think they're like Howard Stern. Like, I know some people hate Howard Stern. I think Howard Stern, the person is, is probably a, from my understanding, is a fairly sweet guy, but on his radio station especially early on, he was like this outspoken, wild, you know, shock jock. And, and they're kind of like that. Like, they were pretty. They've been very sweet to me. And I've interacted with Ryan probably five or six times and Colin a couple of times. And, and they've been, they do seem like they saw a void in the hobby and kind of wanted to keep things honest when people were trying to rip off people and stuff. And, and so they just kind of created these characters from my perspective, but in real life, they. Again, I've only spent a grand total of maybe 30 minutes talking with them. They've been really sweet guys to me. Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. That one little peak. It was like a 10 minute conversation with this young guy who was vulnerable and he had like, there was no reason for them to attack him or do anything to him. And they were just so nice and so welcoming and I was like, okay, now I know who these guys are. Well, and then when Teapot went on. So remember Teapot had those accusations thrown at him about what was shill bidding of a card or something. And then. Yeah, they were kind of talking about it and Teapot went on and Teapot, I mean, he came off really good. Like, really did. He came off. He was so good. I texted Teapot right afterwards and I was like, dude, you did a really good job. Like, well done. And, and they were fair to him. They didn't. I mean, because, you know, they've got beef with Jeff. But, but Teapot they were super fair with. They let him speak. They heard him out and. Yeah, so I guess, I guess I stand corrected. You're right. They, they are a little bit different in person. For the better. If they're listening to this, which I'm sure they're not, they're probably going to be mad at us. They're not outing though. Yeah, outing them is actually pretty, pretty good, guys. Yeah. And, and they're. Yeah, they're. Anyways, so I keep going. They, they live about maybe 40 minutes from me. Where the town that they live in is pretty close to where I live. They used to live in Stockton. They still claim Stockton. They don't live in Stockton anymore. But anyway. Okay, so. Well, Buddy, we've gotten 35 minutes. The rain has stopped. It started raining and stopped raining since we started here. The Internet still doesn't work. Hopefully my voice was my voice pretty choppy in there maybe 2% of the time.
