PSA Hit Pause: What This Means for the Future of the Hobby

PSA has paused their submissions as of June 2. They own two other grading companies now, so it doesn't hurt. And it might even help their brand and enterprise value. Anyways, I mean, it'd be a great play, wouldn't it? Just say, now we're back at the national. All submissions happening here. PSA is back in business, baby. All right, NBA Finals start tonight. Jalen Brunson. I mean, I might actually pocket a few Brunson rookies here. They lose even if they got swept. I don't think Brunson's cards, the bottom's falling out. I think there's only upside for Brunson. A projection said that right now trading cards and collectibles are a $50 billion global industry and that by 2032 they will be a 90 billion dollar industry. Well, there's like two different, like two different weather patterns that exist this time of year in the city where our office is and the apart our apartment, it's by Lake Michigan. So if there's any east wind off Lake Michigan, the city could be like 15 degrees colder than the suburbs. And so we're. The city's out of it. When the water warms up to about 70 degrees and then it's all good. And the opposite in the fall, then the fall it keeps it warmer in the city. We'll, we'll get into some other things, but it's pretty relevant to sports and how high Wimby's rookies might go. Yes, truly. And maybe Stefan Castle. You know, it's funny how, I mean, obviously Wimby's a freak and one of the. Could be one of the greatest of all time. He still got some rings that he's got to put on some fingers before that happens. But, you know, guys like Castle and others kind of get dismissed. But it does take a team. It takes all five. They're deep. Yeah. As a native, you know, Northeastern or not Northeastern. New Englander, I, you know, I'm pulling for the Knicks. I just, I have to, I have to. Yeah, I lived in Manhattan for a while, but never became a Knicks fan. I think I became a Nick fan, actually. But what's the prediction? You know, it's really weird. I. If you'd have asked me until I started getting poisoned by like, maybe the headlines. I think it's all bullshit, but I think, like, literally, I, I was thinking like 4 to 1, like San Antonio, like, feels like a complete mismatch to me. But New York has been playing really well and everybody's been saying this and they're like, oh, don't sleep on New York. I'm like, my gut just tells me San Antonio's gonna dominate them, but I don't know. See, but I feel like the Knicks have more motivation because it's been so long and they need to prove themselves. You know what? My friends had a lot of motivation playing me in basketball growing up, but only one of us was 65 and had a 36 inch vertical. Their motivation didn't get them very far. And you know, hey, a girl can dream, Okay? A girl can dream. And one of them has Wimby. One doesn't. Look, they, they've been, they've been winning by like an average, like 25 points. The Knicks have been playing really well. I don't know, it just feels like me feels like a mismatch. But I. Everybody else might be right. That's kind of going, oh, don't sleep on. I don't know. This looks like a mismatch. It's a mismatch in the, in the gambling sites too. But this could be a start of like, you know, something uniquely called in basketball. It's pretty much the only sport you could do it, you know, where, where it's like, like the Bulls winning. I forget the word. What am I missing the word Dynasty. Dynasty, yes. Basketball can have a dynasty. That's about it, I think. Well, baseball with the Dodgers. Yeah, they did. Dodgers have one brewing. You know, we'll see. It's hard to repeat over and over again and in any sport but baseball for sure. And I do think you could see a run here. I mean spurs are deep, they got a lot of good players. A lot of young players have drafted really well. And you know, Wimby's. Wimby, he, he, he impacts every part of the game. I mean defensive, offensive and so it's. We'll see. I just don't think they can match up with him. And if he, if he doesn't like you know, just ha. Go cold or have just. I want to. I don't think he's going to choke or anything. I don't. I think he's shown his, his mantle already. I don't think he's going to choke. But if he just goes ice cold and one dimensional and they still might lose, but I think they might have a shot. That's the only way. If Wimby plays good, I don't think four, it could be a sweep or five games. But I assume all the money's on San Antonio. So I'm curious, if you guys had Knicks cards, would you sell them now or would you wait until after the game to sell them? You know, I think getting to the finals for them is a win. And I don't think, you know this. If they won, it's just upside to the cards. But I think, you know, Jalen Brunson, I mean I might actually pocket a few Brunson rookies here now. Cause I think you've kind of baked it in and I don't think, I don't think they're gonna like if they lose. Even if they got swept. I don't think Brunson's cards, the bottom's falling out. I think there's only upside for Brunson is my thought. I mean if, if he looked just terrible or caused them to lose, okay, anything can happen. But I think there's only. That might be the, the best, safest thing because Wimy stuff has already been going up so much it's almost baked in. His increases are almost baked in. They've like 5x over the last few weeks. And so I think Brunson might be the best buy in the whole thing because he's still a good player. He got them to the finals. It's no, I don't know knock if they can't knock off a Wimby led spurs team with a lot of talent. I don't think, I don't know what you think, Brian. Yeah, I mean I think that for Brunson, I think there's a. In the industry, in the hobby. There's a couple questions I have. Do you think Wemby's cards, same card would overtake what Ohtani has done in his cards? And then the second question is. Comes in cheap. Is always cheap. Meaning. Meaning, you know, the prospects come in, their cards are so high and they like kind of go higher and then there's people who are just mispriced and they always stay mispriced even though like it's not validated by their performance. Yes. You're calling out some very truths of which I'm building some data platform like exact things proxies on certain players with that exact logic. And it's true, like I see it, I'm like Brunson was, was kind of cheap to begin with and he's never really gone on a. I mean a tear per se as far as his card values. They've gone up certainly, but it's kind of in meh and always been meh comparatively and. But I do think if he wins a title, if you beat this spurs team, he could see maybe the increases he might should have already had baked in. And there are just some guys that start high and stay high. I don't know. You're right though. There's definitely. It's illogical hobby logic. I'm curious though, if his card prices do go up, how long they'll stay up and if he'll kind of be able to. To ride that wave or if it will kind of just be like a, you know, couple weeks, it's high. And then. Yeah, well, I mean if he. It's only going to go if they win, but. Or at least if he plays really well, even in a loss, I think you could see increases. It also helps. It helps us in New York also. Like, I mean there's a lot of people, a lot of money in New York. If they decide that they want to, you know, collect him, that they're going up a lot of money and a lot of strong fandom. Yes, for sure. What is up, guys? So come to 210 East Main Street, Easley, South Carolina collector station to try your luck at some of our basketball products. In some other exciting baseball news, the 1952 Mickey Mantle was pulled. A redemption card was pulled from the Top Cups baseball set. It's already up for auction on golden. And it's. The price right now is $94,000 just for the redemption card. Yeah, I mean, I. I think it's gonna skyrocket past that, but yeah, I mean, what, what. What's that card worth? You can go look at comps on five, five or six, right, Brian? I don't know. What are. It's higher. 94,000, isn't it? Oh, yeah, yeah. So. And the redemption card itself has a value, even if, like, once the cards were redeemed, like, that's still a one of one card. True. I don't know. What. That's pretty. That's an interesting thought, actually, because you get the card, you could probably then sell the redemption card, but I'd probably want to keep it with it put in. I don't know. But you now have two theoretical assets that you could sell that are both one of one. Well, I mean, the Mickey mantle isn't 101, but, you know, valuable. Yeah, it's. It was a fun. I liked what they did there. I think that's fun, putting the older cards in. You know, I wondered if. I figured it was gonna be a redemption, but. So what do they do? They just go buy it in the secondary market and then. Yeah. So tops bought it on the secondary market and then sent it to get graded. And so it's graded a 5.5, which is one of the. If it was graded like a 9, that they would have kept it. Yeah, for sure. But I also think I. Okay. Not to like conspiracy theory, Bella, but I think it's a little too convenient that the card didn't get pulled right away or anything. And it's been how many months since that set was released and it. Are you suggesting manipulation that would drive increased sales? Never. Market market manipulation. I just think they knew exactly what set that that redemption card was in, and they. Well, you know, they probably knew the print run. We'll just say that and see where that print run was and when it was going to get the likelihood of it getting open. I think it stayed in a vault for a couple months because they couldn't have that pulled within the first week. Then it would have lost. Ironically, it gets pulled. Pulled, what, two weeks before series two comes out? Yeah, well, I mean, it's marketing. That's what you do. That's what you'd probably do. That's exactly what I'm. We're just. No one's. There's. There's no judgment here on Collector Nation. We're just calling it out. It's all no judgment zone. No, no. I think it was genius spin, but no judgment. Yeah. And, I mean, they've been doing it for long enough that I'm sure they do it with all their sets and in some capacity or another. I don't. Yeah, I'm probably. But I don't know. You know what? Brian would probably know this. He's more of a statist and numbers guy than me. Like, the. If it messes with the odds, if they don't release it all out, like, I don't know if it still matters, because if it's pack or box based, if, like, if that thing isn't in the population, technically, if it's sitting, you know, not that they couldn't still do it, but. I don't know. Seems like a lot of auditing or something. I. It's probably more randomized and we're probably servicing drama that doesn't exist. But it. They've earned it. Yeah, they've earned it. Like, do they know who pulled it? So not like specifically, but. But golden came out and said that it was a father and a son who pulled it, but they haven't named. Personally, I'd probably. It was actually, you know, homeless guy. But it sounds a lot better say father and son who've been collecting father and son since father got out of the hospital from the terminal. Grandpa, father he recovered from. But they had, I mean, unlike all the other cards, like crazy cards that they pull, they usually post like a video of it being pulled or like some sort of thing, but that none of that has happened either. So I don't know. I don't know. But I should have came, I should have came on the show with like a ski mask and be like, I'm the person rolled it. We're going live to Chicago. He was in Chicago, happens to be in Brian's office. But he's the guy that pulled the card. That would be funny. We should have, we should have done that. All right. Yeah, we should have. Next time. And here's the, you know, anybody listening is going to go, how did it take them 18 minutes to get to this story? But here we go. So obviously PSA has paused their submissions as of June 2nd. So we got in our, our submission on June 1st, right before that. But I just kind of, I'm curious to hear Yalls thoughts about it because I mean, they're not completely pausing all of their submissions, but pretty much just limiting a lot. And what Yalls thoughts are on that. I mean, we predicted it, right. Yeah. On the show. Yeah. I think last week only the only. They had no other option. You can't hire people at that school scale and they own two other grading companies now, so it doesn't hurt. It's going to waterfall down and might even help their brand and enterprise value anyways. But yeah, I mean, it's the only thing they had to do or could do. So they're still accepting regular. So they're accepting like higher end cards. So it pretty much prevents people from submitting like bulk collections or base cards or anything that's like pointless for them to grade, which I think is probably very smart because it's like at this point there's no reason people should be sending in cards that are less than $50 because the price to grade the card is higher than that, you know? Yep. Believe me, and this is our discussion this morning. I was like, we had a card like mispriced. It's like a Zion Williamson was like supposed to, but it was actually only valued at like $9. It was like a graded 8 or 9. I'm like, it costs more than that to grade it to have it. I'd rather keep it than sell it for $9. We actually sold it for five. I think I'm like, a graded card is only worth $5. Like it takes $30 to get it there and you got it authenticated. I'm not saying that Matt, that automatically makes it worth 30, but I mean they have a backlog of 10 million cards. Yeah. Does it make graded cards more val, the ones that are graded more valuable? I mean, I don't know if it's, I mean it's a little bit right. Especially like popular stuff now. Like if, if something's really hyper popular right now and you know that that population's not going to increase significantly in the short term. It makes the hyper liquid stuff more valuable. I would say. Yeah. I think also too, like, if you think about velocity and volume and what these repackers are doing, if you could buy a card and pay more because it's graded A10 and you could start, put it into your ecosystem to make money off it and just keep turning it. Right. I mean, I'd pay more. Or you have to wait six months and it's not worth it. I can make money off that card quickly and by putting in my repack. So I'll just go buy slabs and those slabs will just keep going higher and higher. I think the question is we like, we are putting together some. My collection and I had a lot of 10ccg sport card 10 and our question this morning is like, does that CCG and PSA start to that gap start to close just because, just because people unlock graded cards. But I think to answer your question, I think absolutely makes graded high end cards more valuable. I think it's also going to kind of shift. Well, okay. I think it depends how long this pause lasts. If it's indefinitely, like, I don't, I don't know what their timeline is for it, but I think that it could also make raw cards more accepted now because people are so into like, I want to make sure I'm getting a 9 or 10 whatever for my card. But I think people are going to be more okay with having a raw card because they know that the, you know, they know what the grading situation is. Like. Yeah, you don't have the option. Is there any other brand in the hobby that people say more often than psa? No. I mean, tops close second. But like. Yeah, no, yeah. I mean, right? I mean, is there any more word. Like, I think we should play a game at the National. We're gonna play a game and how many ever times graded gets said is how big of a Christmas gift by the dollar account that Brian has to give me. I thought you were going to say that you're going to get me. No. Yeah, that'd be expensive. I mean. But no, it's. It's out of every customer. Look, we've got the story here. You'll see this. I'm going to film as I talk here on my. My metaglasses. He's got meta glasses. So now he's unstoppable. And so I got these. I'm filming. And so literally, we have a store and Kohl's man in the bar. And I would say every other, if not three out of four customers, the grading. Grading comes up. Cole, would you agree with Grace? Cole's giving me the head. The head nod. Like, grading comes out of like every other. Or three out of four customers that have a conversation with Cole. And it's just. It's like that's all people thinking about. Yep. I. Yeah, I'm. I'm curious. I think it'll be an interesting couple of months, but to kind of move on. Well, not move on, I guess. Grading has seen a 5% drop in May according to gem rate, which we talked a little bit about it with him. Beckett had an increase. Yeah. And Becca was the only one that had an increase. Was there any. Like, was the supply just not there? I mean, is May a sock a weaker month for releases or. Or something else based on the amount of shipments we got in store in May, I wouldn't say it was weaker for releases, but maybe. Yeah. Definitely not. I don't. Don't know. You guys are boots on the ground, so you guys would know the trends. We're seeing it. I mean, we just see scans. Yeah. I mean, have scans been down? Scans are down. There's a cyclical nature for sure. Like when people are in the north, are inside, they scan a lot and then it picks up. Then it picks up in the summer because, you know, people. Kids are off work and. And so it picks up again. But May, 20 month. September. Yeah, September, October and May are just really bad. Yeah. Yeah. That's because I was born in May. Everyone's just celebrating you. This is true. It should Have. They're too busy. A couple weeks ago. They're too busy. Yeah. Yeah. September's my birthday too. So actually, everyone's just celebrating September to remember the. I do think May. May's weird. You got graduations, you've got school come letting out for everyone else that isn't graduating. And, like, I just think there's a lot of planning. Summer, you're out of there. It's around. It's all around the kids and things. And I think. But there's also just personal. I think there's a lot of things that happen in May. I just think that's so interesting. Like, it's something that as a consumer, you don't necessarily think about how something that's impacting you is probably also impacting everybody else and then impacting, thus the entire hobby. Like, that's. That's weird to kind of conceptualize. Yeah. I mean, it's da. You get the amount of data that comes at us. Today's, you know, in the industry today is like. It's really fascinating. I mean, it's the stuff that you can find out through, you know, databases and collections and collectors. Like, there's so much rich data, and sometimes it's just fun just to go into the database and ask, like, the most, like, insane questions and to get an answer, like, who collects George Bell rookie cards? And there's like, a dude that has 5,000. You know, it's. It is interesting, the data. Yeah. Yeah. I'm knee deep in that day. I've got. I got analysis paralysis a little bit like h. And speaking of. Of data, a recent projection said that right now trading cards and collectibles are a $50 billion global industry, and that by 2032, they will be a $90 billion industry. And I would argue it could be higher than that. Doubling. Yeah. What do you think? Yeah, we've talked about this fourth year. I think you might. There might be a couple billion just in trade nights that don't get registered. Like, we talked about this before, that the secondary market, the tertiary market, the black market, the gray market, whatever you want to call it. There's a lot of business being had and that's not captured. So I think you probably double both of these numbers now. It's probably 100 billion right now and probably 200 billion in the next six years. I mean, and I'm just spitballing, but it wouldn't surprise me. I mean, also, too, is like, when I started lx, you know, getting the pitch deck together and you buy these research reports And I'm like, who's. What are you counting? Like, they don't even know what, what. Where it comes from. Is it. Yeah, if you add up eBay and TOPS and fanatics and PSA and, and card, like, what do you. What's 50 billion mean? I don't know. So people be like, what's 50 billion? How are they coming up with that? Like, I don't know. Don't. Don't ask me. Yeah, exactly. I don't either. I mean, ebay alone is like 7 billion. GDP of. GDP of the hobby. But yeah. Of many countries probably it's. And just in that, just in collectibles. Not even their other business, is it. Well, what percent of their business is collectibles? It's behind auto parts, I think. Yeah, auto parts. Auto parts, I think is number one. And then it's collectibles by far. And I think coins are a larger market than you think on ebay. Yeah, we've been hearing about coins. Gary Vee's got coins coming out. Yep. I don't, I, you know, I get it because we had a coin guy on this show a couple months ago and so I, I see it, but I don't, I'm not ready for coins. I don't want to. I don't wanna. I'm not me personally as a collector, I don't care what the market does. But also, do you have enough time to learn a whole new market? No, I don't have enough time to learn this market. Yeah, I mean, look at right just in front of us here. We the, the hodgepodge of things you have to learn. You've got Japanese, Pokemon and these are like literally all within the last week. Yeah, this is all new stuff. And Bowen baseball just came out couple weeks ago. And then signature basketball. I'm enjoying that, boys. And I only ripped about 700 boxes of that so far. Well, between. We love football and basketball, so there's a lot of basketball practice coming out. Football's kind of, you know, tops. Came out obviously with the new chrome, but that was late just because their licensing started later. But we'll have a freaking series two on that in three months or whatever. Or 2026. It's not going to be a full calendar year before top football comes out again. I do know you have to run, Brian. So any, any final thoughts? Talk about the search. Yeah. On Ludx, let's talk about that. Yeah, super cool. Let's so think Expedia for the, the, the hobby. And we have, I think almost every Marketplace possible in auction house. And it's really a way to search all the marketplaces at once. And you can put bids in through Ludx and you could sort, filter. It's really, it's really cool. It's. It's a tool that is not, not flashy, but very useful, especially for repackers. They've been loving it. Yeah, you know, you, you. I've used it quite a bit actually. And it's. You go in there like if you're wanting a certain card, it's nothing. There's not. It doesn't exist until Brian created it. But like literally to know where to find the card that you want because it's not always readily available and it's. You got all these scattered marketplaces. So universal search, hitting all the databases of the major retailers, auction houses, eBay, of course, but getting it all right there. So you can do a few different things. You can compare variants, you can compare prices. No availability, scarcity. Like, okay, should I be buying this now? Like, is there a hundred million of these for sale? I can put it off a couple weeks. Or is there like five? You know, that has never existed that I, that I'm aware of. So it's really cool. Another good thing is free. We're not charging anyone for it. You know, we're winding down here. I mean this is, it's June, which is crazy to say. I feel like, I feel like we've been doing this segment forever. But it's already June. The season's wrapping up. You know, we got this week for softball. I mean by the time people watch this, it's probably already over or it'll be, it'll end today. And you know, baseball's got less than a month left. It's just the clock is against us on the 2025, 2026 sport calendar for collegiate athletics. There's something going on because these are not people that would have normally gone. They're watching or even paying attention to women's softball. The energy and the fervor is real. I'll just say that. Yeah, it is. I mean, I said it before we, you know, a month ago, before regionals even started, I was like, this is to me better than the NCAA tournament. And I think, I think you can see that. Like the seven inning games in softball, the 200 foot fences, the elite arms, like just everything coalesces perfectly into a perfect storm of entertainment. To me, I'm honestly shocked. Like the biggest thing that surprises me is not that college softball doesn't get enough recognition, but I don't understand how like the professional softball leagues are not more popular than some of these other professional leagues out there. Like the AUSL, they only have six teams. I don't know why they don't have 30. I don't know why they're not in every MLB market dominating the market share. Because I think it's so entertaining to watch college softball and even at the next level, you know, like these are elite talents that have real opportunities to play at the next level. And we had plenty of our on athletes get drafted in this year's AUSL draft. So I'm waiting for somebody to catch on to the softball explosion still. Who's going to win this thing? Leonard, do we make any predictions? I know it may be over by the time this airs, but who's winning? I predicted Texas back when it first started. I predicted that it was going to be Nebraska over Texas. So I got half of the teams that were in the final right and I also got the winner wrong. So now I flipped my prediction because I said that Texas was going to be in there. I'm saying that Texas is going to win it. They won it last year. It went three games. It was full of drama. I think Texas is going to yet again deny Nyjah Kennedy an opportunity to win an NCAA title. That's the whole reason she came to Texas Tech from Stanford. She saw that Stanford was kind of falling apart. Texas Tech was on the up and up. She transferred in. She gets to the Women's College World Series last year, loses to Texas this year. I think Tegan Cabin is going to outduel her in the circle once again. I think Texas is going to win it all. I also made the prediction that Tegan Cavan, who's one of our on IT signature athletes, is going to repeat as the most outstanding player. Just because when she is like backs against the wall when it's crunch time, she's the most calm, composed person I've ever seen. And I just think that that makes such a huge difference for Texas. Like, she is just like a guiding light, a North Star, if you will, that the rest of the team just jumps on her back and she carries them. So that's my prediction. Yeah. Talk to us, Leonard. We talked about this a couple of weeks ago. I know getting out there, getting signatures, showing the journey that leads to ultimately the season that's coming up. I know you're excited. Yeah, I am. It's going to be a lot of fun. So one thing to know about us here on IT is all of our signatures are on card. So every single signature we get is an on card. We do not ship stickers to anybody. Nobody signs a sticker and then sends it back to us. So that means we have to have representatives present at every signing. So luckily for me, I'm going to be the representative for some of our football teams this year. I'm heading on a tour. First stop is going to be Monday. It's a team that used to be in the fold that we're bringing back. I don't want to give too much away right now, but if you've been following on it for a while, we are returning a team that's out east here, so that might give people some idea of who to look for. But they're coming back. I'm going to get signatures from them on Monday. Going to stop at one of our favorite on it spots Ohio State as well. Check out what's going on in Columbus with the Buckeyes going to head on through to Columbia, Missouri. Check out Missouri, go to Kansas State, get some Avery Johnson and Joe Jackson autos there from the Wildcats. We'll see what they do in the Big 12 this year. Then going to finish it off by heading up to Omaha, stopping in on the College Baseball World Series, and then finally heading over to Lincoln and get some Nebraska signatures for the fall sports there. So might have some stuff to do with volleyball as well. And that is one of the biggest programs in the country, as I'm sure both of you are well aware. Yeah. Yes, we are. And I'm also excited to see you two sitting in the same spot together. Yeah, exactly. Making upgrades. I know. Maybe we'll see the National. I don't know if you're headed there, but we'll. We'll figure it out. We'll have to rendezvous there and, you know, share some cards and some food and beer, whatever else you're allowed to do on the road. I get to do whatever I want.
