I wonder if a lot of people have hobby related traditions for Thanksgiving. I personally can't think of a better time than watching football, eating turkey and ripping some packs. Our scans go way up on Thanksgiving. Thursday, not so much, but Friday and Saturday. Sunday is probably our biggest days around Christmas. Last year's quarterbacks are actually carrying this year. Drake May, Bo Nix, Caleb Williams. They're getting a lot out of last year's class. Panini locked into it. That was their last year printing. And then Topps gets the seniors this year or juniors this year. That's hoping for some one on ones. Drake May or something. Be awesome. Sell that thing faster than I could beat that turkey leg. Welcome to the Trading Cards and Collectibles podcast on the Radcast Network. From chasing grails to calling bluffs, going inside the hobby. Are you ready to collect? Let's get at it. Here is your host, Ryan Alford. Hello and welcome to Trading Cards and Collectibles here on the Radcast Network. Always powered by lx. Always powered by Brian L. What's up, Brian? We got the. Yeah, I know we do. We're really rocking the brand here. All that X all the time, baby. I can't afford, I can't afford you anymore, man. You're moving up the Kool Aid, you know, and I'm drinking it thick here on our Black Friday edition. We got no lines and no sales so you know, you get it all for free no matter what if you tune in. So hopefully everyone has had a great Turkey day. We're thankful that you're listening wherever you are, whenever you are. You never know. That's always an interesting one, Brian. You never know when someone's listening. But it's possible in full transparency because that's what we do here. We're transparent. You know, we're, we live in the gray, but we're always transparent. We, we are recording this because we believe in celebrating family. We are recording this before Turkey Day, but we are going to talk through and it'll be a laid back episode. We'll see how long it goes. No matter how long it goes. We appreciate you for being here. We are thankful for all of our listeners so far. We appreciate everyone that's helped make this show a hit so far, even if our in our own minds. And I'm thankful for the opportunity to be on here with you, Ryan and, and your team and Bella. So yeah, it's been, it's been fun and you know, we'll keep it going. Exactly. I mean, I'm gonna keep Doing it no matter what. You know, Brian, you are. It's fun, you know, we'll be 90 instead. Exactly. I had to get you south, though. I don't know if you want up north in those years. No, I'm, I'm down. I'm down south for the winter. I'll save you a spot. You have back half of the houseboat. All right. Chair on the beach. It's pretty big. Yeah. Hey, if you're a loyal listener, you know, maybe we'll have a houseboat party. Okay, I better not be opening up that to the whole listenership. But I'm just saying, I'm just such in a good mood for Thanksgiving that giving away free. Free journeys. But yes, Collectibles show is where you'll find all of the channels and learn more about what we're doing. And ultimately, hey, we want to hear from you. You do case hits at Collectibles Show. I want you to send in your favorite pulls of the week. And here's the difference. This isn't about just value. Hey, we want to see some $10,000 hits. Had a couple of those myself a few months back. But it's not just about the value. It's about what you're collecting, what means something to you. Share a story, share a video of you holding up the card that you hit last week that was your favorite player and you nailed it. So case hitsollectables show, send in those videos. I want to know the stories. We're going to bring them to life here on the show. We're going to do a segment each week once we get rolling and get some videos in where we share that on the show with us. We want to feature you on Collectibles show. What's happening. What are somebody. We talked last week. You know, Thanksgiving's both of our favorites, I think somewhat of a sign of age for me, at least I can admit that. But that's also the. The time you get with family all around together, being the same day every year. What's some of the favorite things you'll do on Thanksgiving? Well, we do like, we'll do my. I have three brothers and all in Chicago. So on Thanksgiving, actually, we do kind of a smaller thing, just my family and kids. And then on Saturday we do family and friends. And this year we're having 35 people Saturday. Good. Number two. 25 pound turkeys. And I just bought two cases of wine. Nice. So is this at the. The Ludden Chateau? It is. It's at the Homestead. But no, it's Always fun. I love Thanksgiving. Are you. Do you cook or do you have it prepared? I buy. I go to the liquor store and buy liquor. Yep. Because that's more important than food. Yeah. I clean. I clean. I'm the freaking best cleaner man at like everyone leaves at like midnight or whatever. And I clean from like midnight to 1:30 and everything's done. That's. Hey, you gotta have both ends. It's easy to do the prepare. You're in a good mood having wine. But cleaning up is not fun, you know, so you gotta have that too. It's an important teammate. It is. Hey, Emma makes the dream work. I, Hey, I just love watching, you know, the football. Trying to just completely tune out the rest of the world. And it's like I'm focused on eating and football and it. I'm pretty good compartmentalizing. I mean, you get older and you get enough, you know, stresses in life that, you know, it can be hard. But I try to. I do pretty good on Thanksgiving weekend as much as possible. Gotten easier as, you know, owning my own company and kind of being able to control some things. You can't control everything, but when you work for other people or have other shareholders like you, it can be hard. I got a few investors. Yeah, you got a few investors. Got to keep happy. But, you know, they know you're doing a good job and the. To kind of tune it out and you know, but I think I am going to do it this year. Know, not just because I'm going to. I've been saving. I was thinking what we're going to do. We're going to open whatever. The boys and I have been saving some of our favorite packs. I think maybe that's going to be a turn into like a Thanksgiving holiday thing. We'll. We'll have to. I will maybe turn the camera on for that so you can see it. So we'll. We'll rip some of our favorite stuff from this year on like Thanksgiving Day. Oh, that's awesome. You know, all the boxes are all ones that might have those special oneon one cards. But I gotta look if they've all been found yet. Like at this point. Yeah, we did. We did that last week. We went to. You bought some wax. And I'm like, I'm gonna do a magic trick. I'm gonna take $350 and turn it into zero rip. Like I said, we keep it transparent. Oh, man. I mean, we might have got 10 bucks back. Was it. Was it one box or was it multiple of those three? Multiple. I bought, we bought like a bunch of retail stuff that's always okay. That's all we can afford here. You know, a tech startup is kind of expensive. Yeah, you think I wouldn't want your server bill. The. But the. That's interesting that you got Jack. Like I, I'm kind of hit or miss on retail too. I mean and even hobby. Like I don't know that it matters. But like you only see the hits. Let's just say that you know all the highlight clips. You know I do. That's why I do like some of the guys like Pac man, like we'll watch the. He's so funny. He starts bad mouthing himself and then he, he turns it around every time. But he will, he's like, oh, we're cooked. And usually is. He's like open a $2,000 box and gotten like, you know, $50 worth and he's like, we're cooked there. Next. Next. It's like. It is. Yeah. You know, but it's funny. We talk about it and if you're listening, everybody can relate. Well, if you're listening, you're probably ripping some packs on at some point. If you aren't, then maybe you're on the wrong dial. But the. But in all seriousness, if they were all hits all the time, it wouldn't be as fun, right? It's got, it's, it's, it's the chance of, you know, like, and they wouldn't have the value. So it's like you got to take the good with the bad. I think we'd all agree, we, we think that value might be better sometimes. So there might be room in the middle, but it is sort of the, I don't know, high stakes that make it interesting, right? Yeah, I mean it's definitely in the fabric of this, this, this hobby. It's, you know, you, you have like a normal distribution curve and you have like your, your outliers of like people who are just like avid, like on breaks, live breaks, opening. Then you have like the old people that just buy vintage and it's everyone in between. And that's what makes this, that's why this industry is so much bigger than people think. Because there's so many different Personas inside of that. Yep, tons. And you never know. I mean, and look, unlike scratch cards, they do have value a little bit. You know, if you open 250, you know, you might get $20. But you know, that scratch card's worth nothing if it doesn't have a winner on. Is it is painful to just keep just throwing away base cards. And you're just like, garbage. I'm like. I'm like, our boys are old enough. And I'm like, it's just garbage. So put it in the garbage. Because if not, we'll have like, I already have 5 million cards. We'll have 5 million. 5.1 million if we don't do that. So I've kept just enough thinking, you know, no one, I'm opening the shop thinking, like, okay, I can give them away. But, you know, kids have gotten so snobby now. They don't want the commons. Yeah. Oh, free cards for the kids. Oh, you know, you're gonna. Oh, you're gonna look at me like that. It's like the. Dude, I think on a Halloween that gives you a penny. You're like, oh, okay. Yeah, no, it's the. It's the buttered toffee. You know, like the. The paper wraps candy thing that no one likes. It's really chewy and, like, pulls your teeth out. Yeah, that's the equivalent of it. Like, oh, thanks for the piece of candy that I'm never gonna eat. Yeah, like, screw you, kid. I'm just trying to be nice. It's like, but he knows better. He's like, you're just trying to hand off your comments that you don't want to throw away. You got me? Yeah. Inevitably, the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions are playing. The Lions have usually sucked, but the last few years they've actually been good, even though they lost this past week. But a lot of people are going to lose to the teams that are in that division. I think, like, they got kind of crazy. But I think ultimately though, it's cool to see the same guys. You know what, what makes Turkey better than Detroit Lions? Football. And it's like analio. They had a third game at night, so I think there's three games. Yeah, there is, but I don't know if the night game has, like, the same thing as, you know, same team, Chiefs and Cowboys, Packers, Lions. Bella's helping me here. Our executive producer. Go figure. Has it all in a note for us. And I'm bungling through it, like, I don't know what it. The Chiefs of the Cowboys, Packers, Lions. And then at night game is the Bengals and the Ravens, which would be a lot better if Joe Burrow would ever come back. Yeah, that's what they had in mind when they scheduled. Yeah, that's exactly what they had in mind. That's one of those. All these were pre Planned, you know, it's like, okay, makes sense. Yeah. But he got turf toe. And if you're listening, all three of those games have already ended. And you know the scores because this is airing the day after it. So we hope you enjoyed those games. This is not meant to be the news on those games. More talking the nostalgia of what you do on Thanksgiving and what we enjoy. We break some. We break news a lot, but we also, you know. No. Regurgitated. Regurgitated. This is the opposite of breaking it. Yep. If you're listening like you should be on a Friday, the Friday that this releases. Lots of good college rivalry games. You got the Egg bowl, which I think actually happens. It might have already happened. I think that does happen on Thursday. The one game on Thursday. But Clemson and South Carolina play the Battle. The Palmetto State. Two teams that were top 15 coming into the season. High expectations and one's 3 and 5, 3 and 6 and one's 5, 5. Disaster in South Carolina college football. I don't know what happened. They both hit the freaking, I don't know, low, low, low, low threshold. There's a lot of teams like that that just, like, just did not show up. You got Penn State, you got Clemson. I mean, Texas is fine, but like, they're not. But they're even off from what was expected. And they were preseason national title favorites. Yeah, not. Probably not. I'd say definitely not going to make the playoffs. And from watching a lot of college football, I, I don't see anyone beating Ohio State. I mean, they're just so good. I agree. Very, very good at the football. Very good at the football game. Yes. These guys look like pros if I've ever seen them. Texas, Texas A and M will be pretty interesting, though. I mean, Texas is good enough to like, give Texas A and M some problems, but A and M's undefeated and looks pretty good. They got the. The Iron Bowl, Auburn, Alabama, down in Tuscaloosa, but not sure it's going to mean much. But Bama is still in the thick of it for the playoff. But they got beat by Oklahoma and my boy, you know, Clemson lost their defense, a coordinator, he went back home. That's who's tearing it up. That was a pretty good game. That was pretty competitive game, though. Yeah. Brent Venables, he was Clemson's DC for both. For the national title run, multiple national titles, and we miss him. And he's. He's doing well at Oklahoma, but that was a great game and a big win for them. Good shot at getting in The. What's happening with the Mantle Awards? Well, the Mantle Awards close at. On the 21st at midnight, so that's already closed by the time we're airing the show. And it's getting a lot of cool press. You know, it's. It's just. It's just a great thing for the hobby. Evan does. Evan Parker is a great, great guy and does, you know, does things the right way. But it's super interesting because, I mean, we could go through and we could pick our favorites. Yeah. From the list, but there's a lot of. A lot of categories. A lot more than I thought. Yeah, I. I think we should go through it. We've got. I'll go. I'll name the categories, but we got Best Sports Card Product, Best Non Sports Card Product, Hobby Shop. Hopefully both bars will be on there next year. Best Sold Memorabilia and Innovation. Or what was the innovation like? Innovation. So those podcast. Don't they have, like, best podcast also on there? Maybe they do. I don't know. I think they do have best podcast, but as we've mentioned now, if you're even on the list, congratulations. You know, it's a big deal and. And to get acknowledged and there's a lot of, I don't know, players in the game and lots of things going on. So if you even make the list, I think you've. You've won. I'm not usually a participation trophy guy, but I think for this one, I think I will admit that if you're on the list, that's. That's an accomplishment. You know what I was thinking about doing is, you know how, like, during draft night when, like, the whole family's there and they got the camera looking in. I want to have my company sit in our family room, and when they announce it, it's either going to be like, you know, hugs or just. Or just total silence, like dead. Like, NCAA tournament. Like, if you got it. All right, everyone get it. Everyone get out. Get out, get out. All right. Yeah. Don't even think about taking another piece of pizza that's going in the left. If we win it, I'll do that retroactively as, like, a piece for, like, social. Exactly. Like you're waiting there like pins and needles, high five and hugging, you know, or it's just sitting there, you know, lots of big dudes, like, sitting there, like. Like they're unaffected, but deep down, like, cursing. I mean, let's look at some of these. We got Best Sports card product. So 20, 24, tops. Chrome update 23, 24 upper deck, the cup 24. Panini. NFL National Treasures 2024 Panini. WNBA Rookie Royalty 20, 24 tops. 50. 50. Shohei Atani. That's interesting. We've got all these categories, and then one's a player. I don't know. I. Okay, I'll take Otani. I don't know. You might as well. He's the best at everything. Exactly. I think he plays all those other. You know, he plays all the sports now. He's now playing football, hockey, and wnba, basketball. I mean, there's so many products. This is like. It's. It's really. It's like if you had 16 kids and say, who's your favorite kid? There's so many. So much product. Yeah. And ironically enough, I mean, I'd probably still take the Otani. I don't know. Let me look. National Treasures is a great. Is a great product. So it's. And being football. And being football guys, like, I'm. You know, give me the NFL National Treasures for. For five, Brian. Yeah. And I mean, I gotta go. It's. It's like. Yeah. I mean, it's. I don't know what those other ones cost, but, like, it's really. That. That's gonna win. I mean, obviously, the flagship. Yeah. And it's a good product. It's. It's kind of one of those products. I'm sad. The licensing. Yeah. Like, I mean, I've heard people say this, but I haven't heard Panini. Has Panini come out and said, we're just not gonna make without the license? We're not even gonna make these anymore? No, I think that. I think they will. I mean, because I've been watching these breakers. Like, I've mentioned Pac man last week, but Pac man, like, does this thing, and he's been going, this is the last Mosaic football. And I'm like, are they not going to make it even if it's not licensed, like, next year? I haven't heard that announcement. That's a tough one because, like, if you don't have the athletes, you don't have the Players Association. Like, what do you really have? I mean, I think some of their top products can still stay alive. I mean, I have a Ohtani Flawless, and it's still a cool card, but, you know, you can't really go too deep with. With without the license. I mean, as a marketing guy and, like, doing a lot of product launches and a lot of product shots and product things over the years, the one thing I've been surprised at is that they're not more strategic because you could. Some of them act. I just assume it's by accident because they don't do them all this way. They'll accidentally have some of this non license like last year top stuff where the players at a certain angle to you see his likeness but you aren't so caught off guard that the, that there's no names on the jersey because it's an angle where you wouldn't have seen much anyway. Yeah. And I'm like if I was the non licensed guy, I am getting very strategic in the product shots because you can make it look like you don't miss it a little like at least 80%. And I'm not saying you're not fooling anybody, but you can get 80% of the way there with the right product shot where it gets funky. And I've said this before, is web and Yama rec league dunking on someone where it's straight ahead and it's a badass dunk. But he's got the rec league uniform on because where would normally be huge logos on pants and shirt. He looks like he's at the Y rec league uniform. And that is like you think it's a cool shot because he's dunking but it's a terrible shot because you don't have the license and you miss the logo. Yeah, but if he, if they had shown it where like. Okay, he did a reverse like sideways and you weren't gonna see much of the logo anyway. You kind of. Your brain will play a trick on you a little bit that you're not missing it as much. That's. I feel like I know that this is like smoke and mirrors. Like I'm just saying as a marketer though, I've had to put lipstick on pigs before and let me just tell you, this is how you do it. Panini needs to hire you, man. Exactly. Yeah, it is. But I'm just telling you this. I'd be thinking through it because it's not, I'm not. You can't fool people. I mean it's not going to be what it was. But I'm just saying I flipped through enough cards, a lot of tops last year that I was like couple where you wouldn't have necessarily felt as, you know, disconnected from the team. By the way the shot was. Anyway, food for thought. They can hire me. Call me at 1-800-still available the so yeah, we'll vote for that. Best non sports card product. I, you know, I'm just telling you my boy. Well you can hate on them all you want. But Gary Vee v Friends. I'll take be friends for 500. Me too. Of course. Yeah. Gary's doing big things and more motivated than anyone on the planet and trying to do the right things. And I think he is. And so I don't know, I consider him. He's got my vote. He's got my vote. Hobby shop. I haven't like it's hard because we just haven't. I haven't been to most. I've been to Bleecker in New York and it's cool, but it's kind of cool because you're in New York, but it's not. And I like those guys. Don't nobody come hating on me. But it wasn't that destinationy, you know, it was just kind of so the cool street in Manhattan about three blocks from where I lived. So it's cool. But yeah, I don't know. I think we got lots of opportunity with the Ludx store within the stadium. At the stadium. Looking at the stadium and you know, badass store that it is. Did I say a cool store that you're open? The only. Are you gonna be the. I think you are right. The only trading card store that's like overlooking a major league baseball team stadium. I don't know of any others, but might be one somewhere. Cardwell has some locations inside of arenas so similar. They as awesome as yours? Let's be honest, they have different awesomeness. Their owners, their owner's way more awesome. I mean if you want to say Tom Brady's awesome. Okay, yeah, he is a goat. But no, it's cool. Lux card shop. We'll make the list and we'll, we'll carry up the rear with the most eclectic hometown spot here with collectible station. That'll be the goal. At least for the next year or two. Yeah. You'll do it. Yeah, dude, that's what I do. You go big or go home, baby. Yeah. The Innovators Awards. I don't have all the list. I only have the hopeful absolute without a doubt should winners list which Ludx is on. They got my vote too. Yeah, it's. I don't know who else is in the category. I don't want to do them any disjustice. I mean I'll look if you're on this list, congratulations. Like in all seriousness, like we, we have fun. We're joking around. This is light hearted Thanksgiving edition of trading cards and collectibles. But if you're on the list Congratulations. You know, it means something. But as a show powered by Ludx and because they're the best scanning card app on the planet, you know, we're gonna vote for them. And we did a thousand times. Why not? When do they, when do they get announced? Well, I saw sometime in December, but I'm not really sure. Okay. But the voting closes. They have to count the mail in votes. You know, they have to go to the super PACs, make sure. I heard that Hillary Clinton may or may not be announcing the winners. I'm sure she's. I'm sure she loves this industry. She's probably a collector. Yeah, it's right up her alley. Yeah, the. No, the super packs. Hilarious. You know, I guess in a way we've been our own super pack here on the show. Like skewing votes one at a time. Oh, we could take over the Mantle Awards. I don't know. But hopefully, if nothing else, if you didn't vote, you know, feel bad about yourself. Yeah. And you should. And you should. And I am curious. Like, I wonder if a lot of people have hobby related traditions for Thanksgiving. You know, I mean, I can't say I sit here and know that they do, but I'm sure some people do. Like the family football game. Yeah, that. And like that. Everybody watches the football game. But they, but cards or you know, something to do with collectibles that's related to it because they always save like packs the rip like they're talking about with the boys, like setting that tradition. I don't know. You'd think so. A lot of family time sitting around. I mean, I personally can't think of a better time than watching football, eating turkey and ripping some packs. I think that you got to start that tradition. Well, we will for sure. But you can sit us in some DMs, let us know. We'll, we'll, we'll bring them up. Send us some pictures. Need some pictures. I need evidence like. And hey, nothing salacious. No, no, don't get. I'm sure there's gonna be our scans go way up on Thanksgiving. It's. Do they. Oh, it's insane. Like Thursday. Thursday not so much. But Friday and Saturday. Sunday is probably our biggest days. Well, Chris, around Christmas also. Did you guys see Pops with Pokemon? With all the releases that have been happening. Yeah. Maybe y' all sending increase. I would think you had to, right? Yeah, they, they kind of overtook basketball for a little bit and then basketball fell below. So. Yeah, it's always, it's, it's, it's baseball, football and then Pokemon or basketball. And then they kind of. It depends if, like, what product comes out when the season's over, like football season. And then you've got just basketball for a little while or maybe like spring training or whatever. Of course. But does basketball ever get close to the other sports? Like, even in. When those sports aren't in, they're Pro, they're like maybe 10 lower than football and football is like 30 lower than baseball. So it's, it's kind of, it's, it's not like a huge gap, but as a percentage of scans. And roughly now you don't have the number and data sit in front of me, but roughly what percent of all scans is baseball? Four death. What? 40. 40. 40. Yeah. And I mean, that lines up with probably the hobby. And you know what, that's, you know what's so crazy about that? That I feel like I've got to get my baseball mojo back. Like in the World Series helped. I'll say that the whole World Series and the whole playoffs helped get me kind of the, the baseball juices going again. But I mean, you know, football, yeah, that gap is contingent on, like, this year it's gonna be really shitty. Like, I don't like that gap. Baseball always stays consistent. If you don't have a quarterback class, like, last year was a great quarterback class this year, like, I see that gap between football and baseball becoming much larger next year. Yeah, because you got Jackson Dart, who's on a crappy team, who's good, but, you know, he might be a star. I think he has a good shot at it, but he's on a crappy team, not getting the pub because, you know, that's. If Scatter Boot stayed healthy and they could win some games and be like 500, that could have maybe fueled some of it. But that was like the worst thing that could happen to football with, with Scatter getting hurt and the Giants kind of sucking. So that those 12 being in the New York market too, could have really elevated a lot, you know. Yeah, but I mean, they had six. There were six quarterbacks in the top 10, I think last. Last year. Yeah. This year I don't think there's going to be 1 in the top 15. No, but you see the Drake, last year's quarterbacks are actually carrying this year. Yeah, Drake, May Bo Nix, Caleb Williams. Jaden's still popular even though he's hurt. I mean, that they're getting a lot out of last year's class. Oh, yeah. No, it was A great. I mean, panini, you know, lucked into it. You know, that was our last year printing, you know. And then tops gets, you know, gets the seniors this year or juniors this year. Oh, there you go. I'm hoping for some like one on ones. Yeah, one on one. Drake May or something would be awesome right now. Sell that thing faster than I could eat that turkey leg. Crazy. Because it's is it's getting that bone. And I like dream I think he's gonna be good for a while but still sell the hell out of that thing. So I got lots of options here. Maybe, maybe we'll get lucky. Here, get these on. It's nice to have choices. Yes. Yes, we do. I'll never forget a good story. Like this was like just regular Don Rush, but these Donrus Mega boxes were really hot this year. And literally I walked in and they had lots of big hits in them and they had the optic previews and you had all the hot quarterbacks. And I walked into like a sporting goods store. I won't name them because they need to be a sponsor. I'm not getting free pub, Brian. We don't get free pub here unless your name's Ludden because you make the best and but in all seriousness, walked in and these things were like going for triple retail. Like, you know, like they're 45, 50 box. They were going for like 150 bucks, you know, like on the dark market. Some. I don't know about it, but I heard there was one and the walked in and they just got in a case of these things. And I became a scalper. I'll admit it. I bought everyone and yeah, yeah, that was the last I got for like 47 a box. And I swear I looked about like I could have walked out of the store and sold in the parking lot for like 125. It's the weirdest thing with freaking retail and some of the when it gets hot. Anyway, this is the last box from that I sold. I think all of them are. And opened a bunch or did some breaks. And then to save the last one, there's at least six downtowns in here loaded. Who knows? Downtown Caleb Williams got him. And I do have some cool Caleb cards. That's probably my favorites. My, my baker did a grading on my color blast. Oh, you got one? Yeah, color next color blast on a break. I've got a micro mosaic Drake May. It's a really cool card. Oh yeah, I. I got a Patrick Mahomes. Yeah, that's a cool card. Yeah, I actually have two of your. Three of our last week's top players. I have a Bryce Young micro mosaic and I've been holding on to rookie Greg May's obviously a rookie, too. And so those guys can keep playing. Well, I appreciate it. Can you make that happen, Brian?
