Visit spinquest.com for more details. What's up, everybody? Welcome back to Hobby Hotline. We're here on kind of a momentous episode. I don't know if that's the right word to say. I don't know if that's a word at all. But whatever you, I think I, I think you guys all know what I'm saying here. We're here for episode 400 and I know the statistic is, you know, most shows don't make it past the first like five episodes. There's some sort of huge catalog of shows that don't make it past five or six episodes. We're on episode 400 and you know, obviously having some great hosts and co hosts here throughout the, throughout the years. Three of my favorite guys obviously working with here on Hobby Hotline. We've got Victor, we've got Orlando, we've got John. Victor, how has your week been? What you been up to? I've been, I've been good, John. Been busy making content and having fun with the hobby. And a couple of things that I wanted to mention here. First, first of all is I found this T shirt. John, do you remember this T shirt, this Hobby Hotline T shirt? Yu-Gi-Oh I do, I do. So I had this, I have a bin with all my like stuff that I take to the national, the logo, previous to four Collector. I had, I have this bin where all my like national stuff is in. And I, when I pulled it out this year, I ended up finding this T shirt tucked in there. And I was like, oh, I forgot all about this T shirt. So I was excited about wearing it. But also, John, Congratulations, man, on 400 episodes. The man with the vision here. I know he one-of-one take credit for nothing and he'll say that, no, no, no, team player and all of this. But he's the man with the vision who started this. No, it's all me, Victor. Yu-Gi-Oh it's all me. Attaboy, John. Take a compliment. I'm kidding, I'm kidding. But I, I, I'm absolutely kidding. As we were logging in, I, I pulled out my phone and pulled out a calculator. 400 episodes divided by 52 weeks in a year brings us to seven and a half years that this show has been faithfully putting out content. So John, thank you and congratulations. Yep, thank you, John. Oh, go ahead. Yu-Gi-Oh No, listen, I'll, I'll say this and this is sincere, right? And, and you know, it's a testament to, right. The coast. The, the host and co host we've had through the years we've had over 40 different people involved in the show, including our current lineup. And so it takes, everybody takes people out there who, who like the show, whether they patch auto live or download it, you know, not live and listen to it during the week. So. But like Adam said, right. It's, it's a testament to, you know, perseverance. But not just me, but everyone involved with the show. So I'm, I was kid in there, but a couple minutes ago, you know, this isn't Sports Card. This isn't Hobby Quick Hits and it's just me. I mean I was gonna say Sports Carnation, but I always have a guest on that show too. So this is everybody, I call this like the, the Community show. This is everybody's from, from both sides of the mic, right. The host that have been on it and the people who are on the other side listening it to it through their speakers or watching it on YouTube. So. And just you know, there's been moments where we, you know, it got dicey but we, we kept the train on the tracks. A little pun intended there for Victor. But you know, it's been great. I'm, I'm for those and I saw Phil's comment. I'm, I'm not going to be here. I'm just here for a special announcement and then I'm going to get out of the way here, guys. So for those that don't like me, you're good. I got good news. And if you do like me, it might be sort of good news. But so, so you know, this is episode 400. I'm sure we missed the numbering somewhere along the line. It's neither here nor there. We're. This is what it's titled. I know we don't even number some of the ones we do like live at the national and Whatnot. But four episode 400 card ladder and thanks to them that great organization there for graciously giving us two one year pro level memberships to give away. So I thought about how we're gonna do this and I, I without like excluding somebody who listens to the show and gives their, the show time. You know, maybe not watching it live, maybe they can't. They're working, it's three in the morning. Although Carl from Oz doesn't stop it doesn't stop them. But, you know, I wanted to be fair to both people who just listen to the show or watch live. So here's, here's real quick how it's going to work. Anyone that comments during the, the broadcast today, I'm going to write all those usernames down and they're going to go on a list. If you're listening to this after the fact and not watching it, I don't want you to be excluded. So email Sports Card Nation, PC SportsCard, nationpcmail.com and just say, hey, I want to be entered for the card ladder giveaway. I'll put your email and name on that same list and I'm going to randomize that list. And when we do the, you know, the, the randomizer, the two people or the two names at the top will, will one-of-one you know, a card ladder yearly pro membership for a year. So that's how I, I, that's how I figured out try to encompass both our, our watchers and our listeners. Again, I wish we could give everyone a Prizm Unfortunately, that's not, that's not feasible. But two people are going to one-of-one a card ladder yearly pro member. Absolutely. John, thank you and shout out to Card Ladder. I mean, I, I will shout from the mountaintops how good card Ladder is. Has some of the best data in the industry. So I also put the email in the chat, I guess. I don't know if the live chat can see that. Maybe we'll put, John, if you want to put the email in the description of the episode, whenever it goes. Yu-Gi-Oh just, Yu-Gi-Oh it'll be in the show notes. So if you're listening to this and you're not watching but you still want to be eligible to potentially one-of-one one of those car ladder memberships, I don't want to exclude you. So just email me, say, hey, you know, you don't even have to say this, but hey, I want to be entered. Didn't see it live, but include me, I'm listening and maybe you'll one-of-one Hopefully you one-of-one Perfect. Yep. John, thank you so much. All right, guys, I've, I've spread, I outstayed my welcome. So I'm gonna exit stage left. Have a great show. Have a great weekend, everyone. Thanks, John. Thanks, John. Thank you, John. Have a good one. And I did not, I Did not forget Orlando. We didn't, we didn't catch you at the beginning of the show there. Tried, you know, not, not gonna forget you here. How has your week been, what you've been up to, Yu-Gi-Oh what you got going on? No problem. You know, when John comes and he likes to talk and talk and talk and you know, that's an awesome, awesome thing that card ladder did. So I want to thank the, the, the guys and gal at Card Ladder for doing that for Hobby Hotline and the for Collector. It's a great app and I think that everyone should have it. So check it out. But Yu-Gi-Oh it's been great just watching a lot of you trying to follow some of the things happening on YouTube. It's been kind of a, another one of these crazy weeks with, you know, just all the stuff that's happening with the PSA and non sports and just the hobby on fire. Seems like all these cards of all the goats are skyrocketing. What the prices were last week are now, you know, higher this week. It almost seems like we're back in the COVID era, you know, But I think this is a little bit more, I think it's going to stick a little bit more than it did with COVID and because we've got a lot more collectors just, you know, like always watching the hobby, some videos there, you know, I'll probably put out a, I got a pick up yesterday in the mail, so I'll probably put out a video probably tomorrow on that and you know, just get involved with the hobby. A lot of the content creators and planning on going to Philly the first time I'll be at the Philly show. So that's about a month from now. So that's going to be exciting to be there. And they're going to have a YouTube get together there. So it'll be great. So anybody sees me, please come by, say hello. Nice. Yu-Gi-Oh absolutely. I've never been to the Philly show either. That's definitely one of the shows that's fairly fair, fairly close to myself. I mean being in, you know, the, the Boston area, I feel like maybe one day I'll make it down to one of those shows. And Yu-Gi-Oh I mean I want to say like what you were saying with the, a lot of the cards going up. I mean it does feel very similar to like the, that era, that the 2020, 2021 era where like the goat cards go up and then like the next set of cards go up. Like, you know, Shaq is just a name off top of my head that I've seen a ton of people posting about or you know, like you said, Disney or Marvel or any of those Topps of cards. I mean we've seen definitely a big, you know, a pretty big spike. And, and in my opinion if you have any of those cards and you have the available and you have the opportunity to sell them, I, you know, I, I'm not here to give you a buy or sell advice but like if you can, if you're making double or whatever you made on those cards, it's probably in your best interest to sell and then get into another card or buy some wax or whatever you want to do. I mean it's just, I think when you have the opportunity, I think it's definitely good. So getting away from maybe some of the goats, we had two very interesting posts. Hey everybody, Lady Luck here and we're celebrating America's 250th birthday. Now all summer long I'm going to be celebrating by playing on finquest.com which is an American owned social casino. I just space here first one being that there are going to be debut patches for football this year where last year they were the premier patches which actually the patches themselves in 2023 is when the NFL worked with the players and they essentially came up with the premiere patches and then they were on the jerseys and the players got to keep the jerseys. Last year they put the premier patches into cards into the one of ones, you know, like Camp Scatter Boo I think Shore, Sanders maybe potentially but like Jackson, Darth, they all had these. But then this upcoming year we're going to have the debut patches. Now I haven't seen if the premiere patches are going to go away or if this is Just an extra patch that players are going to get. So, you know, Victor, I'll start here with you. When you saw this news come out, what were kind of some of your initial thoughts on this type of stuff? Well, I was a little confused with, with the premiere. Didn't. What was the premiere last year? Was that similar to the debut? They just basically. Yu-Gi-Oh it basically was the debut patch. Like the, in 2023, the NFL rookies started wearing the that premier patch, but the patch was owned by the NFL. And I don't know if TOPS bought the patches or how exactly they did it, but it's what last year was the first year that they put those, you know, basically being the debut patches into the one of ones. And then this year it's switching. But Yu-Gi-Oh so it was last year was the first year they used them for cards, though. Yu-Gi-Oh And I, I, I, this, I, I'm glad they did that. I, I, When I compare the two patches, this one here is to me is absolutely stunning. They did a great job on the design. And it's hard to argue that these debut patches are perhaps one of the most important cards in, in a player's rookie year. And I got a lot of, a lot of respect for him in that aspect because it's the concept. The idea is, is brilliant. It's just great to see that they keep improving, not just the patches, but, you know, just the same concept but just making a little bit better. So it's just, you know, it's genius. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, I think it's definitely, you know, I think it's, it's one of the first times we've had something like a modern change to cards that has really kind of exploded in this way. I mean, we've seen with TOPS and Fanatics, once Fanatics took over, they, you know, the debut patch was introduced essentially that first season in the mlb. And that first year, it was an idea that everyone loved and it's really just grown. And now that they have football and basketball, they're able to put those cards in, into those or they're able to put the patches into the cards. And I, you know, I agree with both you guys. I think it's definitely a, you know, a good change for collectors to be able to get a card like this. And I think it's one way that Fanatics is going to be able to, you know, I don't know, create a card that's similar to The National Treasures 1 of 1, because in my opinion, I think that's one of Panini best cards. And over the past couple years, unfortunately Tops has had a lot of the number one top rookies like they, you know, he had, they had basically all the top quarterbacks from, you know, the Drake May, Caleb Williams draft. So none of them had any like Contenders or National Treasures autos. So you know, I guess it's good to see that these rookies are finally going to get some licensed autos in this product and then in general and. Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh go ahead. Let, let's. In fairness now, right, because this is hobby Hotline and we gotta, we gotta, we gotta take the good with the bad or take the bad with the good, however you want to look at it. But, but, but there's also a lot of chatter out there and, or let's just call it criticism that this type of thing is just another way that Fanatics is framing the monetization or the gamification of, of, of product and rookies. And I don't. How do, does it feel gimmicky to you guys? What, how would you respond to somebody criticizing this as another, as another lane of gamification of the hobby? Well, I mean I, it is kind of gimmicky. It's what the fans want and it's what they're going after when they're buying these boxes. You know, my only negative is that, you know, it's a one of one so you. One person can ever have that debut patch. So I would definitely like to see them maybe take that whole jersey, cut up that jersey and put up, you know, because they're going to wear more than one jersey. They can change that jersey at halftime or something or whenever and take one of, one of those debut jersey and cut that up and make a few hundred, you know, patches or swatches from that jersey to have more collectors have an opportunity to get, you know, a, an opening day type, you know, patch or, or swatch instead of just only the one of one where the, the multi millionaire guys like you know, Mr. Wonderful and Shine are going to scoop that up. Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh I've always felt like in baseball if you have like a, there should be a patch for every inning played. So if a pitcher comes in his debut game and pitches six innings, to me there should be six debut patches like one for each hitting. How long would it take to swap that out in the, in the dugout? It would take seconds. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean I think from what I know the patches are pretty much like stick on. Like I don't think that they're sewn on there because I know that's right. That's a comment I've gotten is like, oh, they're going to ruin the jerseys by putting these patches on, though. That's the reason why, you know, for like, Joshua Baez, for example, he had his. In that three home run game. In the first home run, he hit the patch, and then in the second and third home run, he wasn't wearing the patch. So, I mean, it's. Right. It's obviously easy to switch or easy to take off. So, you know. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, I actually hadn't thought of that idea, Victor. I think that's a pretty good idea. In the NFL, it could be one for every quarter or one for every touchdown that he throws. I don't know. But, you know, making it like more than one, it's still going to be low scarcity. Right? I mean, right. In baseball, you're going to have, what, nine patches if the guy goes a complete game. I mean, give more people a chance. There was a pitcher that the patch fell off. He came out last year. Red Sox guy. Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh that's. He's. He's a sweaty guy. So I think it was. He actually probably just switched his. Jerk. He probably had to switch his jersey because, you know, when a guy. Guy that size is, you know, a mustache guy of that size in the middle of July in Boston, it's just. It usually is. It's usually a sweaty time if you're outside there, especially, you know, in the stadium with all those lights and. You know, the thing that I'll be interested in with these patches for the NFL is like, I guess I never really paid much attention to the patches for, like, the previous years because there was no need to, because there wasn't, other than last year. But like, on the NFL jerseys, like, you know, you're getting tackled. So it's going to be interesting to see if we see like a rogue patch on the field at some point this year. Like, one of these rookies gets tackled and the guy grabs the patch and it just falls off and it's somewhere on the field and then they can't find it. I mean, that's going to be, you know, that's what Tops had to come out with a, you know, a statement about the toli patch and be like, hey, it was, you know, he was wearing it and this is the one. But like, and again, I think with, for example, Cooper flag, he did wear different jerseys in his debut, which we'll get into that in a second. But he did wear different jerseys in his Debut. And each of the jerseys had the patch which, you know, Tops said that the first patch, the one that he wore, was the one that went into the card. So, you know, we have to take their word for it. Obviously. I don't think they have a real reason to lie, but he did wear different jerseys during his debut and all of them had the debut patch. So the one of the debut patches which, you know, Top said it was the first one went into the card. I think it's kind of similar to this. Like, what's going to happen later on in the game. Like, do they take it off right away? Like, or what happens when they get tackled? I mean, that's sort of, you know, the thing that I was thinking about with, with the NFL, at least with the NFL patches. Yu-Gi-Oh And, and they're doing a great job of promoting it. I sent you a quick video of what they, what they did with the basketball and when you get a chance, go ahead and think you can play that. It's about a minute. But I think that they need their advertising on national TV and put that out there and get some even newer collector, you know, could join the hobby. Right? Yu-Gi-Oh And so, I mean, any, if any, final thoughts here on these patches? We are sort of similarly talking about debut patches with. Because we're going to switch over to basketball. But any, any final thoughts here on the NFL ones before we kind of play this video and switch over to some of the, you know, the debut patches for basketball? No, go ahead. Cool. All right, so let's start this from beginning here before the headlines, before their names were ever in the history books, every possibility was still alive. Mvp, hall of Famer. You're not gonna stop this, young man. Eat something else. You see the debut to the first points for the number one overall pick one night ar. Welcome to the League 1, the rookie debut patch only from Tops. Nice. Yu-Gi-Oh I, I, and I mean, I think here. Oh, I think I lost the tab here. Whatever, it's fine. The, you know, I think they don't have to spend the money on this advertisements, like stuff like this, like I've always said this. Like the sports card industry is so interesting because they have unlimited marketing that's done by their customers. Like they have billions of dollars every year. That's done by people just opening the packs on, you know, YouTube or just tweeting and sending pictures, putting them on Instagram, stuff like that. So the fact that they're putting together advertisements like that I think is really cool. Hey, everybody. Lady Luck here. And we're celebrating America's 250th birthday. Now all summer long I'm going to be celebrating by playing on spinquest.com which is an American owned social casino. So you can help keep budgets balanced and lines moving. Call 1-800-GRAINGER clickranger.com or just stop by Grainger for the ones who get it done. You know I'll start here with you, Victor. I'm going to try and I'm going to pull up the Fanatics the, the kind of the big news that came out about the, the Cooper flag debut patch. But so Victor, what were your kind of initial thoughts here when you saw the, the, the advertisement and then also the Cooper Flag debut patch obviously getting graded and then now it's going to Fanatics collects. What were kind of your thoughts there? I'll, I'll start with this. You, you threw like three questions at me there. Yu-Gi-Oh sorry. That's okay. Let me start with this before I forget. So you know, we, we can all agree that the concept is, is great, that the marketing is fantastic. I love that video that they, you just showed there. But the, the sad reality is is that there's, there's two sides of this coin. One of them is is that a lot of this is rookie hype. Okay? And not every rookie is going to be an all Star. He's not going to be a Hall of Famer. And we're dropping big amounts of money on these rate debut patches because it's new, it's gimmick, it's hot, it's, it's all the rave, right? But in very short time, these players are going to fall off the limelight and the, and the excitement around them is going to fade and somebody's going to be stuck holding the bag on it. On the other side of the coin though, if you let's fast forward 10 or 20 years and we have an athlete that becomes a tier one goat, right man, what can you Imagine this type of concept with a Magic Johnson or a Larry Bird or. Or Jordan. I mean, it is. The. The. The. The value of that card is going to be. I can't even wrap my head around it. Right. Yu-Gi-Oh that's a great point. Because if there would have been a Zion debut patch, somebody would have taken a huge hit on that right now. Yu-Gi-Oh right. But. But you know, you got to look at, you know, every year you have a new prospect coming in there that's going to be the greatest of all time, you know? Right. You know, even players like Luca, who's an incredible player, you know, you don't hear him being talked about as much anymore, you know, as. As players like Cooper Flags and some of the new guys, the Dylan Harpers and those guys that are coming in. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, I think the one thing that I do get a little bit nervous about with this market, how hot it's been, is that it definitely reminds me of, like, the Zion Williamson draft year where there was like four or five draft picks from that draft, which, granted Covid happened, and then there was also a shortened season that led to the bubble. And it was. There was a bunch of different factors, I think that led to those cards going crazy. But, like, I worry about the rookie classes that maybe aren't as good, because I think the one thing that we've pretty consistently seen over the history of markets within this industry is that when you have a. When you have a Wembanyama, you're going to have a hot market. But then when you have, you know, a Zach Edie or like you have last year, the year before Cooper Flags draft class, things weren't as crazy in the industry and things weren't as hot as they are now. So, like, you have three or four basketball players right now that are like the top of the top, very, you know, very viable, like, very sellable. I think that's maybe one way to put it. So, like, if somebody is getting into a break or someone is buying a box, you know, you have four or five players where it's like, okay, if you get this card, you can definitely sell them where, like, or VJ Edge Comb is maybe another example of this from this past draft, but I don't think he is in this set, but doesn't have an autograph because he's a Panini exclusive. That's sort of. Sort of beside the point. But that's one thing that I get nervous about is draft classes not being as good. And does that lead to some sort of drop? I I would say probably like, you know, I think just because the industry is, the industry's currency is these newer players. So like when you have a couple draft classes, whether it's football or basketball that aren't good, you know, that leads to people not wanting to buy the new cards, which leads to people having less amount of money to flip it in that sense, you know. And I don't know, Victoria, if you have seen like you've been in cards for a while, have you seen that happen when we have sort of down draft classes versus this one being like extremely hot? What's the question again, Adam? If you also have seen sort of the industry change when the draft classes are not as good? Oh Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh You see big differences in, in production runs and marketing and that sort of thing. And we've seen that over and over again. My bigger concern, Adam, and I'm sure you're going to get to it. I don't know if you want to let Orlando cover that, but Fanatics, you know, with their premier auction. I don't know if that's where you were going next. We can let Orlando chime in too before we go there. Sure. Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh Orlando, what were your kind of thoughts on the, you know, the Cooper flag? And then again I'm gonna be, I'm gonna pulling up the, the rest of the cards from that, from this auction that are going to be going on the September premiere auction. What were your kind of initial thoughts when you saw the flag was, you know, it's going to Fanatics? Yu-Gi-Oh well, I mean the first thing when I saw that the card was pulled, all of a sudden you notice that the hobby boxes, the boxes price start going down, you know, because they know that the big card was, was pulled. And you know, I would, I expected a Fanatics there was forgot the auction house at an auction did not have the card but they were auctioning off the card if they were to get it in their auction. So I think, you know, it's become a crazy business. But Yu-Gi-Oh I expected them to get it and you know, I mean, you know, you got a lot of new people that are coming in. There was an only fans girl that was gonna buy it and she had a bounty and all these people with bounties on them and you know, ultimately it's going to go to auction and that's what the way it should be. I think that they should go to auction and Yu-Gi-Oh I mean Fanatics is going to get most of these things like that because but I, I, I just, you know, I, I, I love the hobby. I know you guys do too. And, and I try to be positive and not become overly negative. And I'm, I seem to find myself resisting or fighting within me this inner turmoil that this is a conflict of interest. It just doesn't set right with me. It doesn't feel right. And it's a, it's an inner struggle. How do you make the card, distribute the card, the product and create this chase with all the marketing and then you make the chase card basically a redemption so that the person who pulls it has to go through you so that then you get a chance to hook them to bring it into your selling platform. And I wish somebody can help me understand it or I can wrap my head around that idea, but it just, it just doesn't feel right. Yu-Gi-Oh obviously it is a conflict of interest. You know, they're always going to get first crack at it. And you're right, Victor. You know, I mean, all they need to do now is start a grading company, start grading them themselves. But it is a confidence of interest. It's, but what are you going to do? You know, they basically own the hobby right now. Right, right. It's, it's tough to, you know, it's tough to change that. It is, it is. Right. You know, I guess the other part of this conversation is that, you know, all three of the, the big three debut patches are going to be in this September auction. So Orlando, I'll ask you this question first. Do you think that having the con canipple and the Dylan Harper are going to, do you think it's going to affect the Cooper flag price or do you think the Cooper flag price is, you know, going to be independent of these other, other two players? No, I think I actually, I think it's a good thing because they're going to follow the Cooper flag and, you know, some big guy's going to get that and then maybe the, the other guys will say, okay, well let me go after the con canipple or the Dylan Harper now. So I think if they're all in the same, the same auction, I actually think it's a good thing that it's going to get more exposure than ever and you're going to have, you know, all the big money guys going after one of these three. If they can't get one, they'll probably go after another again. These are people that are going to be prospecting and that's, I think that's the problem. Victor mentioned the prospecting part of it and, but you know, we're not in that market. You know, that's true. It's going to be for the big boys. And obviously, you know, they're all going to be going after one of these three big guys if they can't get one to go after another one, I think. But it's like the guy, the guy who pulled this, this flag, wasn't he all over social media a week ago that he was not going to sell, that he was going to sit on this thing? Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, I, I, Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, now all of a sudden, it's up for sale, right? You know, I, I think I'm, I'm interested in the fact that they didn't just sell it right away. Like, maybe there was, you know, they wanted to get it graded. They wanted to. Which it graded a 10, 10, which is like, pretty. You know, hopefully most of these cards are grading 10 tens. I think the Harper got a 9, 10, 10 auto, 9 grade. But Yu-Gi-Oh I, I was a little bit confused by that as well. I mean, the, the person saying that they were just looking to make some memories with the card. It's like, you know, you know how you can make, you know how you can make some memories $5 million that, you know, they can make a lot of memories with $5 million. Realistically. So, you know, I don't know. It's his card. He can do what he wants. I, the, the, you know, the other question here I have for you, Victor, is like, do you think waiting really makes a difference with this card? Like, again, I, I thought if this had sold right away, you're looking at probably $5 million. Like, but now we're, you know, it's two or three weeks past when it was pulled. You think that makes that much of a difference or do you think it's still, you know, it's obviously going to sell for a premium. But do you think they would have got more if they had sold this a couple weeks ago? I don't, I don't think, I don't think the grading has anything. It's, I mean, we see it now even with 90s inserts, right? I mean, even the sevens are carrying weight. When you get into this type of scarcity and this type of highlighted card, I, I mean, it's nice to get it graded for, you know, protection, the protecting the card and, you know, authentication, I guess. But overall, grade of this card, I don't think matters as much. Right? No, it's the only one. So it doesn't really matter what a grade's at at this point, whoever wants it's going to bid it up. But I do think that, you know, I think it's better putting it up at auction versus selling it outright. Right in the beginning, the hype's still there. Actually there's probably more hype now than there was when they initially pulled it because now it's been all over the news, all over, you know, national news and I think it's even bigger than, than ever. And of course Fanatics is going to hype it up even more. Right. I think the hype, hype train is still there for that card. Right. And I think, you know, this is maybe, I don't know, I'm interested in random things within sports cards, but like the, so Dylan Harper and Cooper flag played each other in their debut. So they both wore their debut patches during the same game. And then these cards were both graded and their certification numbers are one number apart. So I don't know, I thought that was kind of, you know, it's an interesting little fun fact. I think in, In a maybe 20, 30 years we'll be like, Yu-Gi-Oh did you know this, like this will be kind of something, something fun there. And you know, speaking of auctions, did you guys have any other, other thoughts here on this, on this auction or you know, the card or. Before we move on to our next topic here. Yu-Gi-Oh I, I guess my question, Adam and, and I would pose it to the chat and to the hobby itself. I just think when it comes to this, this, this system that Fanatics has created with, with these Topps of cards and selling them, I guess like what, what kind of safeguards or transparency can Fanatics do to ease the, the, the, the thoughts of the critics? Because I don't, like I mentioned earlier, I don't feel easy with it, but I wish I had some kind of safeguard or I had some type of way of knowing that this is all on the up and up, all legit and instead it seems like a little bit more, you know, we want to do private sales, we want to do, you know, you got to come through me to actually get the card type of thing and man, what, what is it that they can do then? You know, we, we've got the criticism, we've got the complaints. What are the solutions? I think the solutions are in safeguards and transparency. But how do they do that? Right? I, I think the first thing is put the actual card in the packs because you know, Fanatics really never lets go with that card. You know, even though the redemption's there, they own the car, they have the card now they. They know who pulled it, so they still own the card. Now they got a contact with the guy who pulled it and say, hey, we have the card here. Don't have to worry about mailing it. Don't have to worry about getting it. We can just put it right in our auction. But so I think one solution is possibly, you know, put it in the packs themselves, have somebody pull the card, and they don't know who's going to pull it. Well, they may find out through breakers, but you never know because this one was pulled individually by. By the guy, you know, and his son. So I think, you know, put it in the packs, don't make it a redemption anymore. That way they don't have the card, and they don't have access to who actually owns the card or who actually pulled the card. Yu-Gi-Oh and I mean, I guess I understand that they want it in good condition, but it's like, I don't know. There's something. Something about the cards. Like you said, just being in the packs, I think, makes the poll a little bit different. Like, you know, again, breaking sort of the cycle of like, hey, if you want this card, you got to contact us. And, oh, Yu-Gi-Oh by the way, we can sell it for you. And we can. And we, you know, we can talk to the grading company. We can get it graded. I, you know, I would also be interested to know, like, how much they paid to get that graded or if they paid at all. I mean, this might be one of the things where it's like, if they were shopping around offers, maybe Fanatics said, hey, we'll grade this for you and we one-of-one charge you, or we'll. We'll. We'll eat the fees. But then at the same time, it's like, P.S. because again, the upcharging and that, you know, that gets into the whole. A whole different conversation of, like, what is. What is an ethical upcharge? Like, how is that ethical at all? Like, if you're going to grade something and just because it's more. It costs more to sell, why do you. Why does PSA all of a sudden get to be like, okay, we actually want more of that money? Like that. Something about that, to me, is kind of similar to what you said, Victor, where, you know, you. You have to sort of accept it because it's the process, but it's something where it's like, it just doesn't make. It doesn't make sense to me. And I don't think it ever Will. And I think, you know, sort of to answer your question too Victor, with like what can Fanatics do? You know, unfortunately I think for them a lot of this is going to come down to how much money they can make and what they can do. I mean we are a business, everything is a business within the industry. So it's like, you know, the, the, the, the person who's doing breaks, that's a business. The person selling the cards, that's a business grading business. It's all, you know, part of it where you know, I, I kind of maybe in a similar boat, maybe a little bit less than you, Victor. But it's like, you know, again with the card being a redemption, they have to contact Fanatics to get the card. So like Fanatics, you know, if they got a 5 million dollar card on their hand and they say hey, we'll do all this stuff for you and you just don't have to worry about it, you know, that changes, I think the conversation of selling that card. I think that definitely changes that. And you know, we're talking about auctions here. So we're going to get into sort of another topic which I think was a, definitely a big one this past week with Heritage Auctions. What's going on everyone? Hurry into your local sleep number store today because we have your number. They had their. Well, they had the industry's biggest night of sales ever I believe is what I saw. 62 million. Almost $63 million worth of cards and memorabilia were sold through the summer Platinum night auction. Which you know, we've gotten to the point in the industry where all of the auctions have all these crazy long names because it's just, we can't, it's not just one, one name or whatever, I don't know. But you know we had crazy cards. We had a PSA 8 mantle sell for $7 million. You had the Otani 5051 of one that sold for I believe that was like in the 600k range. We had the, this, the Wagner that I believe sold for four or five million dollars. I mean Orlando kick it to you first. Like what were your, what stuck out to you in some of these auctions or even just auctions that have happened kind of in the past week or so? Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh well the, Yu-Gi-Oh the Wagner sold for over 5 million and the mantle PSA 8 so I think 3.7 million. And I mean it just goes back to the hobby is hot, you know. You know you had that Maradona ball that also for I don't know how many millions of dollars. Ohtani cards are selling now for millions of dollars. You know, I remember you know, a few years ago you may have only had you know, three or four or five items sell for a million dollars in a year. And in this particular auction I think, you know you had five, six or even seven items for a million dollars. So it's just becoming, you know, just I think the strength of the hobby. And, and you're seeing even smaller type auctions that are, that are doing very well. You know, the love of the game auction sold the, that Franken Wagner as it was called, you know, also for I think almost one and a half million dollars. And even the small auctions, like CIA auction, you know they had a, an MBA 7 mantle in there and that sold for over $400,000. So I think it just goes to show the, the strength of the hobby. And even though there's more and more auction houses out there, you know, items are just selling for, for a lot of money. And you know you've got new auctions coming out. You know, I'll give a plug to my buddy Ryan Nolan Breakout cards. He's doing a strictly non sports auction, global auction it's called and that's something new. So he's going to get a little niche of the auction market by only having non sports cards in his auction. I think that's going to be the only auction house that will only have non sports in there. So you know, as new auction houses come come into the market, you know you also have Auction Wire, you know, Leighton Sheldon's company that is really coming on board to try to get all these auction houses together in one place because you know, I didn't realize how many auction houses are out there? And I follow these auctions and it's just, it seems like there's a lot of smaller auction houses out there that are just getting some great consignments nowadays. So, you know, I think auctions now are becoming more the way to go, especially when you have some unique type items, you know, rarer type items versus eBay. I don't see as many of those things going on ebay anymore as they are into the bigger auction houses and they're being promoted, you know, much more now and more available through these apps like an auction wire that, you know, that us consumers can actually go to and find the rare cards. The more tougher cards to find, you know, a lot easier nowadays. Right, exactly. Victor, kind of similar question to you. Were there any cards or anything that stuck out in any of these like big auctions we've seen in the past week? Yu-Gi-Oh and it is. And the concern, not to bring up a source subject again, I know we talked about it last week in that. But you know, these NBA stickers that were on these cards, how much did that affect, you know, these prices is, is probably a topic in and of itself or, or a video in and of itself for somebody. But you know, the close to $63 million and it's being, I believe it's like, I don't know if it's official if anybody's done the homework, but from what I'm hearing, it's like perhaps a record breaking auction where this dollar value has just broken all kind of records. And I. This Mordono Moradonnel ball. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean when I heard it was bad, it's, it's a legit item. Don't get me wrong. You know, it's from the, from the World cup in that. But it's. I just wish somebody would put some air in that thing. Yu-Gi-Oh Starting to look like a little alien head there. But I think my question to, to you guys and to, to the chat and to the hobby is, you know, this $63 million auction cell, is it a sign of an indicator of the hobby health or is it an indicator that these Topps of rare items are becoming a legitimate asset class? Yu-Gi-Oh that's a great point, Victor, go ahead. Because you know, I saw, I saw a video the other day and it was not, not a, a card video, it was an investment type video that talked about that our generation or well, I guess younger generation, a little older now, but the Gen X and Gen Z, you know, it used to be in the old days that, you know, they talked about how people used to invest in things like painting and sculptures and stuff like that. And now those items are a lot tougher to sell than they were in the past and people don't want them anymore. You know, even, even stuff like Picassos are not as desirable as they were, you know, back, you know, 10, 20, 30 years ago where some of these older people, that's what they invested in. And they talked about the new investor in the new investment class and they talked about cards. And that's why I was watching the video because these are guys that really are not in the, in the card industry or anything like that. It's more of an investment type thing. And they're saying that, you know, things like cards, they're so, you know, small, easy to handle, easy to store. You know, they're not like, like paintings or sculptures and stuff like that. That's a little bit more difficult. And it also has that nostalgia factor that some of these old paintings and stuff like that doesn't have anymore. So, you know, I think this is the new, I guess trend is what they were saying a new investment trend is, is going to be cards. And, and a lot of these guys, these people this, I guess rich guys, rich young people that are getting paintings that are being handed down to them, they don't want them, they don't want them anymore. To them it's like, I don't care about this Picasso. I could go ahead and just sell it and get rid of it and either get the money and again, they're harder to sell than cards are right now. So I think that Yu-Gi-Oh the future looks like for these big time investors and guys that are getting into it, like the Kevin o', Leary, you know, are cards and it used to be paintings and even watches seem to be going down. I mean as far as investment type things and cars are just becoming, whether it's a trend or not, the young people now that the new money is, seems to be getting into this hobby. That's interesting. That's a great take. And I was writing some stuff down as you were talking, Orlando, because what, like let's take paintings, right? Art and that sort of thing. What, what seems to be going on with that market is in parallel the sports card market. If we're not careful, that's that side of asset class investment, like paintings, it's ridiculed with fakes, with theft, with restoration, with scammy auctions. And that could be part of the reason too that that's hurt that market and, but we got to be mindful and, and have our eyes and ears open that that doesn't creep into the sports card side of things if it hasn't already. And you know, I think something that we probably don't think about very often is like, you know, really that 1952 mantle was a pretty big shift in cards worth. They started making more of them. But like, if you're looking for like pre mantle or like cards from like the 30s or 40s, they're much more, they're much harder to find. So like, if you're comparing cards to paintings, like a lot of paintings that maybe, you know, paintings that were selling in the self or paintings that were from, you know, the 1800s or the 1700s that are, you know, in the millions of dollars, like the sports card industry and cards really, you know, is less than 100 years old at this point. Like I think if you, you know, if you look at when cards became sort of much more mainstream in culture and when they were just not really invented necessarily, but like the 52 mantle I think is a, is a point in history where cards really started to take off a little bit. If you look at that timeline versus like paintings, paintings that are from the 17 or 1800s or maybe even early 1900s, like we're still early ish. You know, obviously, you know, 52, that was a long time ago. But I think that also kind of takes into account of it and I think it gets into our conversation about like, are we collecting cards or are we collecting scarcity? You know, if we're talking sort of about the, you know, the title that we use for this episode and I think there's an opportunity cost with some of these like high end cards that are selling, you know, the PSA 8 mantle. Like, how often is that card selling? Like the last one that we sold was a couple years ago. So when you have a card that doesn't sell, you know, if you're looking at like a Luca PSA 10 Prizm that card sells, you know, 10 to 20 times a day. But a mantle like this, it's not selling that often. So I think that's why you're seeing some of the, some of the jumps in the prices when they do go up for sale. And I think overall that's maybe sort of why we are seeing some of those jumps. I think that's ultimately it's kind of a combination of everything we've been saying, I think at least. Yu-Gi-Oh great point and great point by Victor too. And you know, who would have thought that that the 52 mantle is going to or probably has outsold the honest Wagner. Growing up, you know, I would have never thought that the Hondas Wagner was always, you know, the top of the top. But you know, the rumor is out there that a PSA 10 mantle sold. I heard it around the National. Now it hasn't been confirmed but you know, supposedly there was one that was sold in a private sale and you know, the rumor is that it sold for, I don't know, over $40 million. And you know, you would have never have gotten that. Now I can't go. Nope, it hasn't been confirmed. I'm not confirming it. I don't want to continue the rumor. You heard it here first, folks. Orlando confirmed it. But I mean I've heard it, you know, through a few people, but nobody's confirmed it. So I don't want to confirm it. But I do think that if one of the PSA 10 did sell, Yu-Gi-Oh it would definitely sell for over $30 million. And you know, I know Marshall Fogo has one, he's not going to sell his, but there's two others out there that may be sold, may have sold or may be sold in the future and they're going to outsell the, the Wagner. And that just goes to show that the, the younger people, you know, now see that 52 mantle as I think the number one card in the hobby. What do you think, Victor? Could be, could be. But again it's, and, and Adam posed the question. I know we're, we're slated to talk about it, but it's that manufactured scarcity versus organic scarcity. Now you know, scarcity has always been a thing in the hobby. There's always been demand, especially for more seasoned, more educated, advanced collectors. You know, they have always had an Yu-Gi-Oh open and an interest in, in rare items and, and, and, and, but now it's, it's more like manufactured and it's more forced instead of organic. Organic scarcity takes time, right? It, it has to like age, like fine one-of-one where today it's more of a chase, it's more instant, it's more hype. And what's going on everyone? It's bluff here. It's not it. Nobody wants to wait for that to happen organically. Everybody wants it instantly. And it's here to say, I mean the scarcity thing. And what saddens me is that the side of scarcity has, seems to always have, relate to money and you know, walking around the national and you're listening to conversations all around you like all week long and it seems like there's an over emphasis on scarcity and money. That's all it seems to be about. And it saddens me a lot of times because that is the, the we have removed. It seems like it's, it's almost like it's extinct and more like an extinct animal to, to want a card because you like the card. Everything seems to be an agenda towards what is scarce and how much money and what is the last comp. And I guess, you know, old timers like Orlando and I, we just gotta, we gotta wrap our heads around that and, and navigate through the waters and lean more on, on our wisdom and either in our experience. Right. Because I think you're gonna, I, I, I, I used to do the same thing when I was younger, you know, in my 20s and 30s. It was all about scarcity, it was all about money, it was all about, you know, what is, what's the Beckett at, you know, but it's, it's one of those things where, you know, you're gonna learn today and eventually all that stuff comes to a head when you start racking up loss after loss after loss and eventually it makes you, it stops you in your tracks and you begin to kind of, you know, maybe goats are the better investment type of thing, you know. Right. Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh And I think too like the, I think what's the, the scarcity conversation nowadays I think is much different than scarcity in you know, early days of cards. Because you know, the, for example, I think a good example is like you look at the mantle PSA 10, there's only three of them. You look at the Wembanyama Prizm PSA 10, there's 40,000 of them. So I think we don't know. Right? I, I've had this opinion for a while and I don't know exactly. I'm trying to figure out the best way to formulate it but like I don't think we know right now what like of the cards that are being produced. I don't think we'll know what cards people really want 10, 20 years from now obviously until that happens. Because I think right now we're just seeing cards being produced and you know, the grading of them almost doesn't really even matter. Like sure the PSA 10 is going to be a good card to get but it's like what's the point of buying a WEMBY PSA 10 for when there's 40000 of them versus you know, I, looking at somebody who's even like you know, a Shaq for example where you know, even some of his cards you can find ones where there's only, you know, 10 to 15 PSA 10. So I think the scarcity and 2 and I guess also sort of part of the conversation is like the numbering of cards adds the scarcity but like the combination of cards just being better produced and the numbering of cards I think changes the conversation of what is like what is scarce, like what is hard to get. Like I don't think any car nowadays is unobtainable. I think the way that like a mantle PSA 10 probably for 10 to 20 years was an unobtainable card, like you Goldin buy it. And nowadays it's like if you wanted to go out and try and buy a card if you got enough money, I think you can find any card you really want nowadays. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean I, I definitely was not a fan of the manufacturer scarcity. You know as an old time collector, you know I like to see the, the natural scarcity. But you know, times have changed and you know you got to go with the flow and you know, now cards that are, you know, number to 50 to 25, number to 5, you know, that's what people want and all the, the younger guys, that's what they're going after. I mean, you know, you look at the, the Ohtani, the Gold dual patch or $3 million or like that. I mean, it's not even a rookie year or even close to the year, but you know, it's a one on one dual sign patch card or whatever. You know, it is what it is. This is what the hobby's become. It's become a hobby of manufactured scarcity, whether we like it or not. Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh And I think that's the, that's the struggle, the part that old timers are wrestling with. And it's one of those things that I have to, I have to wrap my head around it and find my own lane and, and make my own way and, and not fall into the, into the trap. Right. Yu-Gi-Oh And I mean, I think ultimately. So we're kind of sort of getting to the end of the show here, so we'll, we'll get into sort of some final thoughts. You know, I think that I, I don't know. There's also this other piece that I kind of think about where like, you know, for example, the Mantles or like, hey, you know, even like other, you know, like Joe Montana or any players from that era. Like people were not buying those cards to keep them in the best perfect condition. People were, you know, tossing them in drawers. Like people probably sometimes weren't even putting them in top loaders. So it's like, I think that is a big shift in cards now where like I can't imagine pulling like opening up a box of, you know, whatever. Yu-Gi-Oh I just use one, the Wenbanyama as example. Just because he's on top of my head. Like I can't imagine opening up a box of 2023 Prizm and pulling one of his cards and not immediately stopping everything that I'm doing and going and finding a top loader and a sleeve for that card where I think if you were opening up, you know, whatever year of top Topps or Topps or you know, Topps or any years back, you know, in, in the, in that era. That's probably not the first thing that comes to your mind, in my opinion. In my opinion. And I might be wrong about that, but that's just something that I think the things that are most valuable and the most scarce are things that are not meant to be. That if that makes sense, like the 52 mantle. Nobody back in 52 was like, oh, I gotta make sure I put this in a top loader. I gotta send it to get graded. I gotta do all this stuff. It's like. And that's where our mindset I think is sort of in the industry nowadays. Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh well, now. Now you're seeing, Adam, A lot of cards from the 80s and PSA 10s, you know, like the Tony Gwynn rookie card at Topps in a PSA 10 is going for, you know, six, seven, $8,000. And, you know, it's just crazy because that card's available every day in a nine for, you know, 50 bucks or whatever it is, you know. Right, right, right. But, you know, again, the newer collector wanted in a PSA 10. And. And Yu-Gi-Oh a lot of those cards were not taken care of. You know, they were opened up and they were not put in. In sleeves right away. Yu-Gi-Oh I lean more towards the iconic cards, man. I don't. You know, Griffey's Upper Deck is an example. Even Victor Wembanyama's silver, you know, 40, 000 of them have been graded. I don't know, there's like 30,000tens or whatever the number is, but I don't think that matters if there's 3 million people shopping for one. Right, right. That's sort of the other part of it. So it balances out the scarcity, Right? Right. Yu-Gi-Oh Yu-Gi-Oh There's so many levels to the scarcity and the demand and volume. It's like, you know, again, it's, you know, the Tony Gwynn PSA 10. Like, there might. However many there are. I'm just gonna estimate maybe, maybe there 20 or 30. If there are 50 people that want that card, that's obviously what's going to drive up the value. So it's like if there are, you know, and again, maybe we'll even use the. The Cooper flag, for example. There's one of them. If 10 people all want to pay at least a million or $2 million, that's what's going to drive up the price of that auction. It's like, how much are people willing to spend to get the card that they want? And again, opportunity cost. I mean, it's like, again, there's so many layers to the conversation of, like, why things are valuable and why things go up in value and what's. What's rare and what's not rare, I suppose. Well said. Yu-Gi-Oh I mean, I guess we're up here. We're up here at the top of the hour. I mean, times time flies here on, you know, episode 400. You know, I think John said that towards the end of the episode. I don't know if he. If he's gonna put it on Twitter or where he's gonna put the info, but just be on the lookout for, you know, that card ladder giveaway. I'll just go, go back around the, the panel here. You know, give yourself a shout out, let us know what you got coming up. Victor, I'll start with you. Let everybody know where they can find you. Yu-Gi-Oh it's just Adam, Adam Drew Palmer basically on every platform. YouTube, Instagram, tick tock, Twitter, Snapchat. I guess I've been trying to do some stuff on Snapchat that's, that's not going very well. But that's neither here nor there.
