What is Actually Selling at Card Shows Right Now?

Hey, everybody. We are. We have made it to the sports card clubhouse. This is the bonus segment of Card show culture, episode number one. We're going to be spending about 10, 15 minutes with you guys. If you haven't watched our full episode that we did, you can check it out on our channels. We will be post. We probably have posted at this point, but I want to thank, you know, Greg, Mike and Adam for inviting us, allowing us to. To jump on their. On the platform. And so we're going to be talking a little bit about today about the, the variety of different dealers throughout the country and what's been selling really well for them. I feel like it's kind of cool to kind of get a perspective on the different regions and the different. Of what's been really, really working for them. And so Orlando and I have spoken with about, I think about six or seven dealers from different parts of the re the country. And we're going to be showcasing their answers and what's been working really well for them. But of course, as you know, my name is Sammy Thunder and I'm joined by Orlando, A collector's dream. Yes. Thank you, Sami. Thank you for having me on. And it's great to do this card show culture with you. And you know, this will be a quick one, but I think it's going to be extremely informative as to, you know, what is kind of hot in the markets and all across the United States. And I think the answers are definitely, definitely kind of tell a lot. So I'm gonna, it's gonna be a lot of fun. I'm gonna bring up this, bring up our slides here. And so I'm going to showcase. We have Matt from Providence. We asked him to be involved and that kind of focuses mostly on the Northeast. Also asked Paul Borges from PNB Sports Cards. Him and Matt kind of demonstrate the Northeast area. They do a lot of shows. They're doing one, I think they're doing a show this weekend at the Northeast Card Show. We also asked Garrett from Ballpark Memories, who represents more of kind of like this, you know, Midwest central part of America, Indiana, Illinois to Tennessee. He does do the Philly show and has, and obviously does Strongsville as well. Also ask Tony from Monster Cards who kind of like represents that same area, does a lot of the same shows. So it's gonna be kind of cool to see what they have to say. I also asked Jake, who's kind of our wild card for tonight. Jake from Legends Never Die just started going, I think full time with his business Now Jake's a wild card because he demonstrates more of the online sales he sets up at shows, but he's more of an online guy so it's gonna be cool to see how the online sales have been going for him. And we also asked my buddy from Abe Stark's card, Eric. Eric T. Technically, you know, he's, he's from the Florida area, but he does a lot of shows in the northeast. So he's kind of also a little bit of a wild card. And finally, I also asked John from John's vintage sports cards. John represents a lot of the western side of the country. So we asked each of these dealers what if you had to name one or let's say, you know, one to four players that have been selling consistently show after show or online what has been doing very well. So let's jump into. The first dealer is John. As you can see or if you're watching or listening, he represents the west coast, California. And so I picked the cards are the cards are not indicative of like which card has been selling, but more focusing on the player. So John mentioned that no surprise, Jackie Robinson playing days cards have been selling like crazy. We all, we know this and for those that are have been watching other podcasts or watching other videos, it's no surprise. He also mentions Cindy Koufax which makes sense because out being in California, he's a Sandy Koufax's royalty out there. He also mentioned that the Nolan Ryan both second and first years have been selling like crazy. I don't think there's much surprise here. Right. Orlando, no surprise. I of course especially being California, Koufax is big over there. But yes, those are definitely cards that I've seen that are selling, you know, pretty much every, every show that I see and every. Yeah. So like the Jackies obviously is, it is, is a given. Cindy Koufax I think is, you know, listen, Kofax is royalty no matter where he is, no matter where which card show it is. I think there's always going to be a desire to have him and you're in a collection. But I can see it making more sense that he's coming up more in California. The Ryan's. Ryan is, you know, his story, his background, it's. And his, the longevity and what he's been able to do doesn't surprise me one bit that he stretches as far out west. Yeah. And I'll also add to that that I think Nolan Ryan Carr is overall not just the first two years, but I think any of the years the earlier years, if you find him in high grade, you know, like the 71s, for example. Oh, yeah. Anything in a 7 or an 8, anything like that. The high grade ones. And even the, the cards from the late 70s, you know, if you get them in a nines and tens, they're selling for a lot. Very high money, too. Let's move on. So we're gonna go move on to Garrett. So Garrett, he gave me two responses. I asked him, and as you, as we mentioned, he's more of like the Midwest area. And his response was also Jackie. Jackie card's been selling. So you can kind of see that throughout the country. Collectors, vintage collectors, gravitate to Jackie, as we've been seeing. But he also mentioned Michael Jordan cards have been selling a lot. He's been going through Jordans left and right. And again, I think, listen, Jordan is royalty no matter where you go. I think his cards are always going to have desirability. But again, you know, because it's more the Midwest, Illinois, Chicago Bulls, you can sort of connect the regional dots there. But yeah, for sure. Jordan is, is the number one seller in basketball. You know, he's. He's the Ohtani of basketball. So of course, Jordan, especially the rookie card, but I would also say the second and third year card and the star card is. Oh, yeah, way up. That card has been probably the hottest Jordan card that I've seen out there as of late lately. Yeah. So let's move on to Tony. Tony Monster cards mentioned. Babe Ruth cards are selling really, really well. Babe Ruth is arguably the goat of baseball. And he also, he also mentioned that Jordans have been selling well and Tony and Garrett definitely overlap on a lot of shows in the area. So again, not a surprise, you know, seeing a lot of Jordans selling through in that. In that area. I mean, again, both players, Babe Ruth, Jordan, they'll sell pretty much at any show anywhere. But it's kind of cool to see that. You know, we're seeing a lot of predominantly Jordan cards selling in that region. Yeah. And I think as far as Ruth, it's the Gaudi roofs. All, all four of those Gowdy roofs have almost become unaffordable lately. That's probably the, the roof cards that have gone up the most, even though there's a lot of rarer Ruth cards out there. Yeah, that, that I, I like the rare ones, but, you know, everybody knows the Goudies and those Goudi roofs have really, you know, shot up incredibly high. Yeah. So we're gonna move on to Jake, who is Our wild card. And again, the cards, it's just, I, I'm. The cards I'm picking are just representing the players. I'm not saying that those cards are particularly selling really, really well, but they might, they probably are. So Jake's choices were Mickey Mantle, no surprise. Online, Mickey Mantle is selling really, really well for him. But this one caught me by surprise a little bit. Roger Maris, he's been selling a lot of Roger Maris cards as of late. It's those. But he also mentioned, like, I didn't show this on the slide, but he also has been selling a lot of Willie Mays and Hank Aaron Clemente. I mean, you know, those cards, when you're dealing with online, you're dealing with a, with a wider market versus shows. So you're getting people from all over the country. But it's kind of cool to see Rod, you know, Roger Maris in this mix. Yeah. You know, Jake sells a lot of the golden era cards and of course, you know, Mantle is king in that era. Yeah. But I agree, you know, especially the, the Aaron rookie card or second year errands and the Willie Mays cards, even though they haven't gone up so much, I do feel that Willie Mays is undervalued if you compare him to, to Mano. But Mano right now, in my opinion is the hottest, one of the hottest players. If you look at some of the auctions that have ended, the golden auction that just ended, you know, you had three mantle cards there that, you know, one sold for almost $2 million. The piece PSA8. Yeah. Mantle is extremely hot right now. And I think, you know, he is the Michael Jordan of, of baseball. So we're gonna go to Matt from Providence. And so Matt gave us a few names as well. So Matt mentioned that for him, Hank Aaron is selling really, really well. But I think he actually mentioned. Let me see if he mentioned. I think he mentioned that both the rookie and the second year have been selling really, really well for him as of late. And so it's kind of a, it's kind of cool to see a different, you know, I mean, listen, Hank Aaron is one of the biggest names as well, but him selling in the Northeast. It's kind of cool to see that Hank Aaron has been moving really well. A variety. It's a nice variety. Yeah. I mean, I agree. I, I didn't get to see what Matt said earlier, but it's, you know, of course, you know, Hank Aaron is the home run king. I know Barry Bonds is or whatever, but in my opinion, And a lot of the vintage collectors, it's. It's Hank Aaron. I mean, that's the guy. And finally, I think. No, we have still of Eric right. From Apex. So Paul Borges mentioned he has a kia. I think he gave me a number of different players. I'm trying to remember how the slide was laid out. But he mentioned both Nolan Ryan. So both Nolan Ryan's. You can see that it's stretching from the west to the east. Nolan Ryan is, is a premier name. And he also mentioned actually specifically the second and third year for Paul has been doing really well. So it's kind of cool seeing those early playing day cards both of Nolan Ryan, Hank Aaron. The 55 and 56 set has just been growing exponentially for collectors, I think, and it kind of always has been. But people, I think people gravitate, you know, especially when you look at the Nolan Ryan in the late 60s. People love the solo card of him in the 69 set. Yeah. And then that it makes sense, you know, especially the Hank Aaron. You know, when you see the price right now of the rookie card, which is shot up incredibly. Yeah. You look at the second year and the third year Aaron, those I think are undervalued. They're relatively cheap compared to the 54 Aaron. Yeah. And so you're able to get a better, considerably considerable drop off of the price. I mean, listen, the 54 Aaron is, is one of the most beautiful cards, you know, and it's not. They're. They're available, they're out there. But you know, you're right, if you wanted to get, if you wanted to have a Hank Aaron card in your collection, you don't want to spend. You want to break the bank. A 55 or 56 are definitely great alternatives. And finally we finish with Eric of ABE Stars cards. Again, like I mentioned, Eric kind of represents a lot of shows even actually in the northeast. But I think he does shows out in the south too. And so Eric mentioned Babe Ruth as well. Has been selling really, really well for him. Jackie Robinson, he actually sold that exact card or traded that exact card right in front of me. He traded it to a collector who gave him three cards in cash. Incredible. It was an incredible trade. He mentioned Mickey Mantle and T206s have been selling really well for him as of late. I think he mentioned hall of Famers, but he might have mentioned all T206s have been selling really well. That kind of threw me a little bit. That was kind of cool to hear to see that. Yeah. I Think that's, it's great to see the, the, a lot of the pre war, you know, of course, you know, the, the Ruth is pre war, but the T206s, I think especially the portrait versions, I've seen that those are selling very, very well. You know, the Cy Youngs, the Walter Johnsons, and of course the Cops. Oh, yeah. I was surprised that nobody mentioned Taika because I do see the Ty Cobs definitely selling. But you know, you're talking to three, you know, main guys when you're talking about Mano, Jackie and Ruth. Yeah, those. That's what people go for. And there's so many new people that are coming into the hobby right now that, you know, have some money to spend. And of course they're going to go after the bigger names, you know, especially, you know, Jackie. I still think Jackie has a ways to go. Mantle's been hot and Ruth, I mean, to me he's the best player ever in baseball. So obvious, you know, these are all kind of obvious to us in the hobby for a long time. But I think with all the new money coming in, you know, they're seeing, you know, that these are the guys to so called invest in, you know. Yeah. And so I'll finish with this that, you know, you mentioned. It's like, it's kind of a surprise that Cobb's not getting more recognition. But we, when I asked these questions to these dealers, I asked like, what's been really selling for you? We're thinking about the grand majority of people coming up to the table and what would sell a lot of the, I mean, like, I'm not saying Ty Cobb's not a big name, but as far as recognition goes, you know, people, I think collectors recognize Mantle, Ruth and Jackie more so than they'll recognize Ty Cobb. But again, it just depends. There's a lot of variables into this. There's who's the dealer, who's the, you know, where is where, what, what area of the country are they in, who's the buyer, who's their clients, who are the people, you know, like what kind of shows are they set. There's so many variables, which is why I wanted to try this out, try this first bonus segment out to see how this would go. I think it's kind of cool to see what some of these results were. Yeah, I agree completely. And, and you could see the little bit of difference versus, you know, out west and, and him saying Koufax, where the guys in the east don't mention Kofax as much Right. But and also it depends on their inventory. You know, all these dealers focus on golden era and, and some people focus on more pre war stuff. So it all all depends on the dealers. But it, it really came out, Sammy. This, you know, I guess the, the interviews that, that you did and stuff all came out to show the real stars of. Of the cards are gonna be the Jackies, the Michael Jordans, the Babe Ruth and the mini Mantles. I mean, you know, we always. That's what we think. But these guys are proving that those are the cards that they're buying and selling the most of. Yeah. Cool.
