When New Cards Are Exciting!! Jake & Matt With Extra Innings Episode 15

I can't believe they keep letting us come back. Well, how I somehow, somehow they keep letting us come back. You know what I'm thinking, though? I'm thinking this is what I'm thinking. Greg and Splendid. Yeah, they're Elbow and Mike. They're what? They must be out voting Mike. You gotta figure when they brought on Jeremy Lee, Mike's got to be thinking, Matt's gotta go. I mean, to be third. You want to be third. That's tough. That's tough. That's tough. And we're. I mean, that's tough. But Greg, smart guy. Greg, school teacher, smart guy. He knows you don't get rid of talent. And Jeremy Lee knows with talent. Talent, all talent. What you make up for in hair, you. What you lack in hair, you make up for in talent. Watch yourself. All right, let's talk about a. A fun topic. So we got some feedback on the last episode and it was very constructive feedback. I want to shout out commenter AF Raker or a fraker one who said left a comment on the last video saying, I'd love the. To see the YouTube collector content creator community make an effort to steer the discussion back more to the actual cards themselves rather than more and more talk about condition, grading, centering, eye appeal, etc. And I followed up and had. He had some ideas and I wanted to ask this question. There's a couple different ones here. Some of these we've talked about, like how you got into collecting, that kind of thing. I wanted to ask you this question and I, I have a couple of thoughts on this, but you know, some people consider us historians when it comes to sports and cards. And sports cards. Not Greg. Even though I was just speaking so highly of him, he didn't think that of me at least. But at least on the talent. Go ahead back to where you were. You know, just get to my craw. Get to micro. You know, you could talk about it. You are a historian. I give, I give you full credit on that one. What else? The topic was times you remember being the most excited about a card. So you buy a card. Should have read the list this week. You have a card coming. Well, why don't I. I'll start. I'll mention one time for me, I have a couple of ideas, but this story has been repeated a few times by Me. Oh, we gotta hear it again. The Smokey Joe Wood. That one. No, go ahead. Is that. No, you were gonna think of a different. You were thinking of a different one for me. No, I was just joking. I was just making fun of you. So was this most. Another story that I have to hear again? But no, listen, not everybody here. Not so. Not if they're on your regular. If it's on your regular channel, they don't hear it. You. I'm gonna tell the story, and then maybe that will jar something for you. No, no. Yeah. Okay. So I wanted a Cracker Jack, Smokey Joe Wood for a long time as a kid. I always heard so much about Smokey Joe and his story and how he had, you know, was this. Had this incredible year in 1912 and, you know, kind of blew out his arm and had a second act as a hitter and was. Had this great reputation. He coached at Yale for many years and kind of stayed affiliated with the Red Sox in certain way until very late in his life. And. And. And then I read. I read Gloria Other Times and learned more about him. And so I really honed in on the Cracker Jack because, God, what an amazing image of. Of a ball player on a card. And the Cracker Jacks. I've mentioned this before also, that growing up, Cracker Jack Baseball Card Shop was the name of my lcs. And, you know, and I always loved the little replicas, the 93 replicas. I had the whole set. So, you know, a couple years ago when I got back into doing this, I really wanted to get a smoke. A Cracker Jack, Smokey Joe. And I scoured for one. It was always hard because obviously Cracker Jacks are expensive. The Smokey Joe is expensive. You got to pay just as much for a Smokey Joe as you would for, like, any hall of Famer, basically, in that set. Oh, yeah. It doesn't have a. Doesn't have a lot of cards. And he especially doesn't have a lot of cards with the Red Sox, so. Because he has more cards later on with the Indians, but not with. Not with the Red Sox so much. Oh, what? The Guardians. Were they not called the in. No. Were they not. What were they called in 1915? Matt? Were they the Indians? I think they were just Cleveland. They're the Naps. You're right. You know what? You're right. Actually, they were the Naps. So there you go. Greg. Greg. Are you. Greg. Guy doesn't know nothing. Historians right here, buddy. Historians right here. Cleveland, he went to go play for Anyway, so I was scouring for one, trying to find the right skin, right copy. The poor Redskins. I'm talking about the red, so they stink. Go ahead. The. So trying to find the right one and obviously for me I was gonna need. It was gonna need to be a 1915, most likely, it was gonna need to probably be a one or an authentic. So Stan Lock, vintage dealer, Ohio based. He was set up at a show in Chicago. He posted on Instagram that he. And he posted a picture that I didn't really get it. Couldn't see a clear picture of, but he had just gotten a bunch of Cracker Jacks back from psa and I had talked to him at the previous Shriner show asking him if he had a Cracker Jack Smokey Joe. He said no, but I should be getting one pretty soon. So a few months later he's got, he set up at a show in Chicago, posted on Instagram. He's got the card there. I emailed him and I couldn't make out what the grade was or what the year was on the card from the picture. So I emailed him. He didn't get back to me. And he was doing a show in White Plains the next weekend. Well, I decided to. It was a Friday and it was between jobs and I decided I'll just go. I definitely want to get this card if I can. And if I get it, I get. If I don't, I don't. Well, I, I get to the show, I, I pay the extra money to get in early. I go right to Stan's table and I ask him about the. I've done deals with Sam before, so he knew me and he was like, yeah, I got it right here. And so I look at it and you know, as we know with Stan, he puts, he puts the prices on the back of his cards. That was another reason why I didn't really know what the price was going in. But so I, so I go, I look, he's got a price on the back. Is it a 14 or a 15, by the way? It's a 15. So, so that's the thing. I get there and I finally see what the card is. It's a 15 and it's a PSA one on the front. And I'm like, perfect. Because if it, because if I got there and I saw that it was like a. By the way, when you say you mean price point, like that's the cheapest way to get into a Joe Wood Cracker Jack. Exactly. Just so people understand exactly what you Mean by that? Perfect. Like, yeah, yeah. It's the lowest, like, I get in. As long as it looks good, like, this is going to be great. Yeah, exactly. So he's got a price on the back, and it's reasonable, but it's more than the cash that I had with. With me. And I didn't want to go to the ATM and take more money out. Again, I was between jobs, and I said to him, you know, can you come down a little bit? He's like, yeah, this is as far as I can go down. I had a bunch of cards to sell. He wasn't interested in doing a trade because he. Stan usually kind of just goes. If he buys stuff, it's usually pre war. He doesn't, like, he'll. He'll get, like, collections of, like, golden age stuff. But that's not really what he buys at a show. And that's my experience with him. So. So I was like, all right. I thought he doesn't trade. What's that? I was under the impression he doesn't trade. You're probably right with that. But I. So, yeah. So how I think is like, yeah, yeah, we can do this all. But, like, those cards, I'm gonna give you this much money. Yeah. And then you can use that money to buy this card from this. At this price. Like. Yeah, he doesn't. Old school. Yeah, that is old school. So he said, I hope he keeps doing it forever. Just like that. Yeah. He. He said to me, go around with these cars, because it was. It was hall of fame rookie cards. It was like Brooks Robinson rookie, like, a few other cards. He was like, go around. You'll buy. You'll find somebody to buy the cards. So I go to right across the hall, right across the aisle to Brian Roth. I made a deal with him. I sold him a bunch of. A bunch of those cards. I had just enough money, cash to go back over to Stan Stable. And I'm like, all right, Stan, we got a deal. And I'm, like, shaking as I'm putting the bills out just because, like, this car, like, it was this journey, like, I drove three hours to go to go to this show, and the card happened to still be in Stan's case. And because that thing wasn't going to last, you may not have even lasted that show. And I got my card, and Stan, every time I see him, he always brings that up. But that was. That was like, on the short list of the most excited I've been to buy a card was just. That's cool. It was just this journey that, like, ended with me getting the, actually getting the card. I call it an adventure. It was an adventure, not a journey. All right, so, so what's, what's an experience that you've had where you were so super excited to get a card so you told that story, did nothing for me, triggered nothing for me. I can't think of anything. No, I don't think. I can't think of anything. Oh, yeah, the Jack Johnson. The Jack Johnson. Okay. Yeah, yeah, the Jack Johnson. So, yeah, Shriners. This the last Shriners we talk. I had just been talking about that car, the T227, and the first table that I stop at while I had five minutes to walk. I walk into that card. Yeah, pumped to get that card. And, yeah, the guy gave me a decent enough deal where, like, I'd buy it. I don't remember. I, I bought another car. I bought the Joe Wood. No, I bought the. No, I can't remember what it was. It's a Caramel Hooper. Yeah, 16 Hooper. Somebody bought that this weekend, by the way. Yeah, big card, nice card that knocked down the price for the me to get to Johnson. Really pumped. Yeah, that was a great one. I wasn't shaking or anything like that. No. And I'm not against it. Like, I, I hope I have, I have that experience. But yeah, no, yeah, really cool card that was. And I was, I was equally as mad that I couldn't. I wasn't there that morning to that you could rob the card from me. The problem is with how we have to buy big cards nowadays. If you don't buy them at a show, you know, you, you'll win your bid and then the card has to go to authenticity guarantee and then into your vault and then to me, and before I thought, I get it, it's two months later, you know, but. Oh, you know, even if you get an auction house, you know, you wait a few days. But like at shows, I don't get to buy a lot of cars at shows for the PC. They just kind of stumble up. So, like, yeah, good. You got a good story. That's a good story. Yeah. And I'll say, like a couple other small ones is, you know, recently I bought Wilson Wilson Frank said Williams. That was a huge moment when I, I refreshed the, the email because it was like. And it said I had won. And I, I, There was quite a. Quite a bit of fist pumping and yelling and screaming when that happened. Lfg? Did you say lfg? I don't think so no, okay. I, I, you know, but it was more I'm a let's go guy. Yeah. Okay. And then when I was a kid, I'll mention one other one. When I was a kid I, you know I, I would. We had two local card shops in town which was great. We could go to card shows occasionally but I remember when we bought a playing days Willie Mays which was a 72, 72 tops. I think it's the last card with the Giants, I'm pretty sure. And that was really special. I mean it's a beautiful card. It's got like the yellow border around it and he's wearing the Giant's uniform and that was really special. I was always, you know, such a big fan of, I was, I, I was a historian at a young age and I loved Willie Willie. You know I think he's, I would still say probably the greatest all around baseball player ever. Yeah. And, and getting up. I remember, you know we didn't have a lot of money to spend on cards. You know I would say the most expensive card we ever bought when I was a kid growing up was maybe like 30 bucks on an individual card. It was probably the most. And I remember going into, I think we probably went into one of the shops and saw that card and it's beautifully centered and I have to imagine that we probably, we must have paid only maybe 20, 25 bucks for it. And I just remember I cherish that thing. And I sent it to PSA, it got a PSA 6 and that's still, that's still probably my favorite card that I've, that I've ever owned. Do you still have it? No. Oh yeah, yeah, it's, yeah. Oh I never, I have no plans. I don't think I'll ever sell anything out of my childhood PC like I like that can't. I couldn't bring myself to do that. The only thing from my childhood collecting wise that I've sold was I sold you that Patriots ticket from the 911 the game after 911y and I used the money from that to buy my 50 Bowman Jackie at that same show that I sold you the sold you that ticket at. Oh nice. Very nice. I remember when I was a kid I went, I would, I rode my bike to this card shop. It was across the Newport Creamery. That's gone now and the card shop's gone too. But so I went to the card shop and they had, the guy had a Curtis Martin rookie auto like in like pulled pack pull auto. So that's like 195, 96. So I don't have the money. I think it's like 15 for this card. And that's like. That's a lot of money. I remember riding my bike back to the house, taking my father's save change, putting it in something, lugging it with my bicycle back to the card shop and walking in with this bucket of change and mostly pennies. I'm not getting mostly pennies. Wow. And the guy, the guy said, well, I guess you're lucky I have a change counter. And looking back. What. You were lucky. But anyways, yeah, so, yep, I paid all, all, all change. Wow. I was so excited to get that. That Curtis Martin rookie card. And then he went to the jets and Ah, yeah, that was. That was the end of that. Since that. Do you still have that? Oh, no. I hope some jets fan has it pieces. No, no, I don't. But that was a good story. It was a Curtis Martin. I love that guy. It was such a bummer when he left to go to the Jets. Hall of Famer. Great, great guy. Like just. Yeah, big smile like just. I loved watching Curtis Martin run and yeah, it was. That was tough when he went to the Jets. He was so good, man. He was. Had some great. I want to give a shout out on this platform to the young man that came up to us at yesterday's card show. Theo showed us our image on the. What was like Spotify or whatever. Yeah, it was a Spotify. Is this you? That was so awesome. What a nice kid. Theo. Yeah, that was great. I can't believe we have a. We have a fan. We have a fan. Yeah, we have one fan. We have one fan between the two of us. He listens to the show during his homework. He does his homework and listens to. Doesn't collect vintage cards, but likes our show. That was really cool. That was really cool. That was cool. I know we just talked about it on the hit list on your. On your platform, but I wanted to share this on. What's this thing called Sports Card Clubhouse. Clubhouse. I forget because those sports cards live with Jeremy. What a get that was, by the way, number two ball guy. Sports cards. Clubhouse. Sports cards. Nonsense. Sports cards. There's all kinds of sports cards. There's sports card professors, there's.
